    INTRO
    Have you ever struggled to “eat right?” I mean everyone always talks about how a proper diet is so important for climbers, but then they say we need such and such amount of carbs and protein and fiber and vitamins and blah blah blah so you gotta get all these ingredients from the store and cook yourself these healthy meals like 3 times a day and oh my god who has time for that?
    What if I told you there was another way? What if I told you there was a food that has all the nutrients you need, takes 30 seconds to make, tastes amazing, costs the same or less than regular groceries, AND is delivered to your front door?
    You’d call me crazy, right? But as it turns out, this magical food does exist. It’s called Huel and it’s advertised as a “nutritionally complete food.” So I made a decision, in the name of being healthy and climbing well! I’m throwing out everything in my pantry to see what happens if I try to live, work, and climb on only Huel for 30 days.
    Considering I don’t exactly have an “iron stomach,” this… could get interesting.
    In this video we’re taking an up-close and personal look at what my mind and body endure while only eating Huel for a month. To that end we’ll take a series of objective and subjective measurements related to overall health and climbing ability and track those changes week by week. I’ll also vlog the entire process so we can experience what happens in real time. After that we’ll call up some experts to get their opinion, and then I’ll share my personal thoughts on Huel and the challenge as a whole, as well as my recommendations for other climbers.
    DISCLAIMER
    Right before we jump into it I want to be clear that this video is not sponsored in any way by Huel.
    Also, remember that I’m a physical therapist, not a dietician, so take my opinion on nutrition with a grain of salt. However, we will be talking to a real dietician later on, so stay tuned for that.

    Update March 3, 2023:
    Many Huel customers, us included, recently received word that they will be discontinuing the peanut butter flavor. Very sad news for us since in our opinion that was the best flavor by quite a large margin. There are still plenty of other good flavors, but just be aware you won't be able to buy the peanut butter flavor after June or July I believe.
    Original Comment:
    Hope you guys enjoy this video even though it's a bit different from what we normally do! We just thought it would be fun and interesting experiement, but we would never recommend that anyone does a major diet change without easing into it and/or talking to a professional. Before this challenge, Jason was consuming 1-2 meals of Huel per day consistently so as not to shock his system. :)
    Also, even though it's in the video I'll say it here too: this video was not sponsored by Huel!

    This drink saved my life. It helps a lot with my eating disorders. Due to not eating for days at a time, I have no energy to even stand in the shower. I get nausea and start coughing and breathing heavy. Have to take breaks between small tasks. So I can't even stand long enough to cook. This only perpetuates the problem, As because it takes too much effort to cook and too much energy to even stand, I just don't eat. I nibble on things.
    My eating disorder started shortly after These girls on youtube started bullying me and calling me fat.
    The process of putting food in my mouth and chewing is not enjoyable.
    I have plenty of almond milk to make Huel with. It's high in nutrition and low in effort. So I get to keep myself healthy while I'm fighting this eating disorder and trying to get my diet back on track.

    As someone who sees cooking solo as a huge time sink (especially working a 9-5) the idea of being able to make something nutritious in a few mins cheaply is quite appealing.

    Another thing about huel that you didn’t even mention is that it’s vegan. I’m myself not vegan but that does make it desirable to a wider audience which I think is great!

    I have been using Soylent for a few years, and basically came to the same conclusions: I like it, keep lots of it around, it comprises half my daily nutrition, it's super convenient and cheap enough, I have minimal cravings, and better health than pre-Soylent. I'm a sedentary 67yo retiree. Properly engineered & evolved meal replacements are a great addition to our survival & prosperity kit.

  • @grim-upnorth
    @grim-upnorth ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Thank you for this video. I've been using Huel as a meal replacement for things like Breakfast and Lunch, sporadically over the last year or so... for times when I am pushed for time, or so tired at the end of the work day that I can't be bothered to cook. However I've never considered huel as a total replacement, because I have a wife and daughter(teen) who have their own personal thoughts on a liquid only diet. I did try a 1 week trial of "only huel" but the family situation made it very difficult to achieve (normal cooked meals needed preparing anyway), and in fact I only managed 4 days before admitting defeat and joining my family with their routine.
    I'm in the armed forces, and I have a period away from family/home coming up so I've been looking up case studies regarding huel only diets. One big push factor in this case is the financial implications. My family at home will be spending almost identical amount of money on the weekly grocery shop as if I were there, so sustaining myself whilst away will be an additional cost to our family income. I will have limited cooking facilities, and likely no refrigerator to keep fresh food from spoiling. There will be a food hall with prepared meals for me, but even with that facility available to me, Huel will be able to give me the neccessary nutrition, whilst also maintaining my own fitness, at a fraction of the cost of cooking or eating in the food hall. Average cost for a breakfast is between $5-10, lunch is roughly the same at $7-12 and evening meal is closer to $10-15.... this is PER DAY.
    I worked out that if I were to limit myself to the absolute cheapest meals available in the food hall, I would be spending $22 a day or as much as $37. Over a 30 day period that's between $660 and $1110 per month, just on food, for MYSELF. Plus there's absolutely no way that the food hall meals will have the neccessary nutrition.
    On a combination of Huel Powder 3.0 and Hot n Savoury, that financial implication drops massively to under $300, with the added bonus of being much healthier and nutritious than whatever food hall meal I decide to eat.
    This video has pushed me over the edge in favour of at least trying out Huel for 30 days, then we will see how I get on with balancing food hall meals with Huel as a way forward.
    Thanks again.

    It’s great to see your opinion on Huel. I usually don’t give myself enough time to cook breakfast before work in the mornings so I like to blend a quick smoothie 2 scoops of Huel, a handful of spinach, 1 big chonk of peanut butter, 1 cup frozen blueberries, 1 spoonful of honey, and a nice combination of hemp, flax and chia seeds. The Huel is WAY cheaper than protein powder and gives me the energy I need before climbing. But there’s no way I could see myself going on a full Huel diet.

    Hi, I was wondering how much water you drank each day, not counting all the huel drinks? This would help me a lot figuring out how much is healthy to drink aside from my own huel mixes. Also another question, we are now 2 years further, do you still use Huel?

    • @EmpressKadesh
      @EmpressKadesh 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How much water you need depends on your weight and if it is hot and you are sweating a lot. Google says 1 quart per 50lbs of body weight on an inactive day. At 120lbs I try to drink at least 2 quarts a day. It is easy to keep track with a Ball jar. I saw an article saying a woman died from drinking 2 quarts of water all at once so don't try that. In the Army they would have us chug a 1 quart canteen before bed every night and no one died so I don't go past that. Personally I notice that my skin starts breaking out when I'm not hydrated so the state of your skin is a good indicator. If it looks unhealthy you aren't getting enough water.

Have not tried it yet but seen good results from a friend. Might try huel instead of my Lental-greenpea-celery-agave smoothies in the future. My friend had nothing good to say about the flavor, but that should be fixed with a splash of agave and some pineapple/mango. In the past I made salmon smoothies before going home from the sushi where i used to work, so it should be ok.

I've been drinking Huel for 3 months so far and feel so amazing. Before my body was in such critical condition that I was having suicidal thoughts and depression but I'm ok now based on just diet and going for at least 1 hour walk a day

    Thing is, I ordered the Black version of their powders and started using it for breakfast. Two scoops, add 50% water and 50% oat milk (gluten-free), and that just gets me through my days. Not just a bit, but better. I have more focus, I have more energy, I feel happier, I feel content, and it makes me feel healthy. The difference with me is quite extreme perhaps, because I never ate breakfast (or lunch) at all because I'm a lazy SOB, and if I did eat something it would be a sandwich with cheese or something (I'm Dutch, sue me). The contrast is extreme to say the least. Perhaps I could accomplish the same with a balanced diet and a healthy breakfast and lunch, but: A. that would take a lot of time; B. that would require regular shopping; C. that would require me to keep track of my supplies; D. that would require more dish washing; E. that wouldn't be nearly as complete as what Huel promises;. F. it would cost a lot more money per serving.
    I still eat a normal dinner every day. Also a freshly made and healthy and pescetarian meal, 4x a week, that I just need to warm up. Full of healthy ingredients, too. And then once a week I eat in a restaurant, once a week I just order in something (usually sushi), and the last day of the week I have my cheat day and anything goes.
    Huel won't replace my entire diet, but it'll stay for breakfast and lunch for sure. Just 2 scoops and 10 seconds of shaking and I'm good until dinner.

    • @mahadevovnl
      @mahadevovnl ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@HotTakeAndy Weight loss is the difference between energy in and energy out. Huel won't help you out in any way if you still consume too many calories.
      I'd consult a dietician, drink more water, stop drinking alcohol, and avoid sugars. And even then, if you eat too much, you'll gain weight.

    • @UltraPikmin
      @UltraPikmin ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@HotTakeAndy As long as your calorie intake is less than your calories used/burned by living/exercising etc, you'd see results. Huel would come in handy by having all the vitamins, minerals and so on to keep you healthy and feeling good. As Maha said below, lowering alcohol intake and sugars (if applicable) also helps a lot. If you were to combine exercise with just Huel / Huel + Healthy other meals + healthy snacks, you'll definitely see results, as long as your calorie intake isn't higher than what you're using.
      However, if you were consuming the same amount of calories as you're burning, but still exercising well and having a healthy nutrition going, you'll see bodily changes in performance, more muscle and less fat, it just won't necessarily drop those weight numbers, but still affect you beneficially

    • @tsnstonepilot5375
      @tsnstonepilot5375 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@HotTakeAndy A serving of huel is only 400 calories. FDA recommends 2000-2500 calories as general nutritional advice depending on gender.
      If you go and get fast food, say, a burger, fries, and a soda that's about 1100 calories. So you would have to eat fast food twice to hit that target.
      In my experience it's actually quite difficult to eat too many calories unless you're trying really hard. An egg only has 90 calories, so the classic eggs + bacon + toast is like 500 cals. Just 1/4 of your RECOMMENDED goal. And most people skip breakfast.
      Eat homemade lunch and dinner? You probably won't even be at 2000 cals.
      The easiest way to hit 2000 calories on accident is eating lots of sugary stuff or eating lots of snacks. Even among people who are overweight you would be surprised to find that their calorie intake is not as high on average as you would expect. The issue is the way your metabolism reacts to sugar, which makes your body more likely to hold fat. Once you're overweight the cycle feeds itself.
      The easiest method I've found to hit your calorie targets is to skip breakfast and if you snack make it something low calorie like baby carrots.

    i never had huel, but have had soylent. It is a great energy booster for when I felt tired or sleepy. Seeing how huel also have bags for their powder, I'd recommend getting a container to put all the powder in. More easy then re-opening the bags. Also a funnel if you tend to spill powder everywhen when trying to put it into your bottle. Thinking of trying out Huel and see if there's a difference.
    Only complaint I have with these food alternatives is that I tend to burn calories easy when I do workout, So I would not be able to live off of only huel or soylent.... Plus food taste good and sometimes you should chew to keep your jaw muscles active.

    Which specific Huel products were you using and which specific products worked best for you?
    Huel lists quite a few product options on their site, ranging from Huel Daily Greens powder, to Black Edition, to Ready to Drink, Complete Protein, etc…so I’m just curious what your Huel dietary regimen was comprised of.
    On a side note, I added several Huel products to my daily diet roughly 3 months ago. This was purely by chance as I randomly stumbled across the product while watching Steven Bartlett’s terrific interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson. Steven’s passionate endorsement piqued my interest, so, I did a bit of research and decided to give it a go. I purchased a month supply of “Huel Daily Greens” and Huel Ready-to-Drink (Banana Flavor).
    The first month went so well that I’ve continued taking both on a daily basis for the past 90 days or so.
    In the three months since integrating Huel Daily Greens and Ready-to-Drink into my daily routine, I’ve lost 24 lbs of bad weight. I’ve never felt better or more energetic.

    Although I have used Huel in the past I have tried a dozen of brands that offer the same product to end at Powdermatter, which has a perfect formula and price in my opinion. The last two years I have been eating about a third of my calories through shakes, really convenient and it helps with my weight control and protein intake. And its a blessing for climbing trips, a shake for breakfast and lunch with nuts in-between finished with a normal cooked dinner over camp stove gives so much energy for climbing and is really cost effective.

    Everyone has different caloric requirements, but the proportion of nutrients is obviously always the same, so basically you *will* be overdosing on some nutrients. In some cases this is completely fine, like water-soluble vitamins that you will just pee out, but fat-soluble vitamins might pose a problem. The powder really should be split up into two components, one that forms the bulk of the calories and whatever vitamins and nutrients that it's okay to receive in excess, and another component that forms the basis of the other nutrients which need to be more closely monitored. This way each person could combine the two components in the proportion that makes sense for them and their caloric needs.

Just something to be weary off if any heartburn sufferers are planning to switch to Huel.

      My tips would be to drink meal replacements only during the day and have a regular meal in the evening. So there's less chance of going to the bathroom at night because of a high water intake. Besides the obvious benefits of a regular healthy meal it's also mentally satisfying so it's something to look forward to and fall asleep more easily. The amount you to drink and eat can be calculated roughly with an online calorie calculator. The ratio of macronutrients is also important depending on your specific goal. You can also track your food intake with a nutrient tracker (I use Cronometer). But it's not necessary if you're sure you're roughly on target. Good luck!

    One thing to remember: just because you can eat something doesn't mean that it's food. Our bodies have evolved to eat food, not processed junk.

    Just ordered some on a whim after seeing someone praise the taste/flavors of Huel over Soylent. I really enjoy Soylent (Original) but the con is that the pre-made bottles are expensive and the powder only comes in 2 flavors, amazing (Original) and nasty (Cocoa). The price is pretty crazy at almost 2x Soylent's though...

    Would this be a good replacement for a daily breakfast? Does it keep you full? I'm looking for something that will be good for breakfast and help keep me full until lunch break. Currently I have eggs and hashbrowns, but I need to swap to something more convenient and healthier. Let me know your thoughts.

      Studies and gut mechanics would support more solid foods to help with satiety so this may not make you feel fuller, but also foods with more protein will make you feel fuller.

    I'm going to order some Huel after watching many videos and trying the ready-made shake bottles. I will likely only have it once a day for a meal that I don't have time or energy to make from scratch. Anyone with IBS probably shouldn't have too much Huel in a day due to the high fibre content!

      The challenge was done back in October of 2020, but we took our time reviewing the data, talking to experts, and writing the script before creating the final video :)

      you'll poop a lot more and your farts will be worse for a while. after 2-4 weeks your stomach will be used to getting the right amount of fiber. most people don't get enough fiber so you'll be okay.

      Another one we really like that we've recently found is HLTH Code. I find it doesn't make me gassy unlike Huel, but everyone is different of course.

    I am recovering from cancer but seem to not be able to recover from the weight loss, lost over 30 lbs., I have never been overweight. This sounds like a great way to get enough calories without have to eat eight times a day, I find it difficult to eat what to most would be a regular size meal. My question is when you say to stay hydrated is there an optimum ratio of Huel to additional water, like 8 additional ounces of water to each 8 ounces of Huel mixture?

    • @HoopersBeta
      @HoopersBeta  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear! I don't know of any optimum water-to-Huel ratio from an objective standpoint; I think it just depends on how thick or thin you want it to be. The important thing is to make sure you don't stop drinking water throughout the day because you think you're getting it all from Huel.
