  • December 13, 1963: Videotaping of both the dress rehearsal (from 5:30 to 7 p.m.) and the final performance (from 9 to 10:30 p.m.) of "Episode Sixteen" of "The Judy Garland Show" at CBS Television City, Stage 43, Hollywood. Judy's guests were Ethel Merman, Shelly Berman, and Peter Gennaro. The episode was aired on January 12, 1964.
    Judy's songs: "Everybody's Doin' It" and "Let's Do It" (opener with Merman, Berman, and Gennaro); "Shenandoah"; "Makin' Whoopee" (with Gennaro, then joined by Berman); and "[Ethel] Merman Medley." The "Trunk" segment featured Judy singing "A Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow"; "Puttin' On The Ritz" and her once-in-a-lifetime performance of "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" which she sang in tribute to John F. Kennedy who had been assassinated just a few weeks prior. JFK and Judy were friends and she was devastated by his death. She had wanted to do a tribute show just after the assassination but CBS nixed the idea, with one exec now famously telling Judy that in a week no one would remember JFK.
    Judy also taped an unaired comedy sketch with Berman in which she played a pushy newspaper reporter who "interviews" Berman about working with Judy Garland. The sketch exists and is on the now out-of-print DVD of this episode.

    Watching this live must've felt like a religious experience. What a beautiful, beautiful performance by Judy. I know she had a very special relationship with President Kennedy, and took his death extremely hard. He would call her from time to time from the White House, making a special request for her to sing, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" over the phone to him.

    This number was chosen by Judy to sing for this particular show as a tribute to JFK who had just been assasinated. They had been friends and she had canceled the show that was Scheduled the week of his death so this was her first time performing since the assassination.

      Yes, and when Judy was worried about The Judy Garland show, JFK called to let her know that the First Family always watched and loved it.

    She was one of the truly greatest. Frank Sinatra, who was a friend, said once: In the end we will all be forgotten. But not Judy. Never Judy. And he was right. She could do it all. Act, sing, dance, whatever. She was the total performar.

    This might sound strange but I’ve always been fascinated by the way Judy held her microphones. Especially the cable. She grasps it, whips it, thrashes it, throws it over her shoulder… and all to great effect. Perhaps she didn’t know what to do with her left hand but I somehow doubt that’s the case. Also, given the background of the couple of days they had to put this number together, this is one of the greatest live performances caught on screen. You can see she was hurting deeply after the sudden, awful death of her friend.

  • @matthewsharkey8319
    @matthewsharkey8319 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    She did this for JFK and he was such a close friend of hers that you can see how emotional she is performing this right after his death! They didn’t want her to do this and had a regularly programmed episode prepared! Judy refused, she went ahead with this anyways but what they did cut from the episode for controversial reasons was Judy looking into the camera and saying ‘this is for you Jack’ turned out to be the most emotional powerful episode of the entire show! Every time I get to the end of the performance and she belts our god is marching on I get tears and the chills! 🙏🙏🔥❤️ happy birthday Judy

    Judy didn’t just sing this song, she shredded it and wrung out every drop. When she whips that mike cord around her, wow! The lady meant business. This is a great example of the steely resolve she obviously possessed when she felt very passionately about something. EDIT: Wanted to add that it was newly-appointed President Lyndon Johnson who asked the TV stations not do any tributes to JFK. The excuse he gave was wanting the country “to move on”.

    • @johnm3894

      Stop framing Johnson as if he had anything to do JFK's death. He was a man who wanted to heal the nation and Kennedy's people wouldn't allow him to. They are the true villains, not him.
