Judy Garland and Martha Raye - Glenn Miller Medley

  • January 14, 1964: Videotaping of both the dress rehearsal (from 5:30 to 7 p.m.) and the final performance (from 9 to 10:30 p.m.) of "Episode Eighteen" of "The Judy Garland Show," at CBS Television City, Stage 43, Hollywood.
    The show had been on a holiday break since December 23, 1963, and had just resumed rehearsals on January 11th.
    Judy's guests were Martha Raye, Peter Lawford, Rich Little, and Ken Murray. Judy sang: "76 Trombones"; "I'm Old Fashioned" (part of a sketch with Lawford); "Glenn Miller Medley" (with Raye, the dress rehearsal performance was used for the broadcast); "Hit Parade 1964" with Ray and Lawford; "All Alone"; and "Oh Lord, I'm On My Way." The latter two were part of the "Trunk" segment. It was originally planned for Judy to sing "Just You, Just Me" but she dropped that, on camera, saying "Let's not do the fast one."
    Judy also taped a segment featuring impressionist Rich Little singing "The Man That Got Away" as different famous stars and another segment of "Ken Murray and His Hollywood Home Movies."
    This episode aired on January 26, 1964, just after the annual broadcast of "The Wizard of Oz."

      My dad won a Army Special Forces (Green Beret) soldier of the year award in 1973 in SoCal (Los Alamitos Air Station). Martha was at the award ceremony but then came back to my parent's house for drinks after. I was 7-8 years old and she found out we had a cat and wanted to see it (she was also famous as an animal lover) -- so she came into my (messy) bedroom to meet our cat Tigger.
      Not many can say they had Martha Raye in their bedroom! ;-)

    • @user-fs9yk9hz1k
      @user-fs9yk9hz1k 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      actually there were a number of performers gave Judy a run for her money. You just did not realize it. When a performer like Lena Horne or Peggy Lee were on the show, they also gave her a run for their money, but you do not realize it, what you do notice is a much more energized Judy giving us everything and then some because she was singing with someone worthy of how good she was/is/and will always be. Judy was highly competitive, and to get the best out of her, you surround her with the best and watch her soar. Compared to acts like the Dillards (also on the show), where you see her going through the motions so to speak.

    Ms Raye was a 1940s legend in her own right, which the generation taking this show in would certainly know. No trouble holding her own here. She used to do a brilliant Judy Garland impersonation as a part of her act as well. Such talented women-and that band!

      Darwin, I understand what you mean. BUT Judy Garland is more famous with anyone over 30 than Renee Zellweger. Yes--- Judy Garland was very deserving of acclaim. It is unfortunate that the acclaim came after her death. But it is acclaim nonetheless, and I would imagine that even Zellweger would admit Judy is a Star with a CAPITAL S while Renee's star is somewhat smaller, regardless of the Oscar.

    People forget or never knew what a formidable jazz singer Martha Raye was. She was right up there with the best of her day. (Singing opposite Judy Garland? Not a problem.) Her comedy and schick often overshadowed her vocal prowess. Her singing was almost incidental to her acting. Anita O'Day said to Dick Cavett on his show that Martha's singing was big influence on her.

  • @craigslivka1

    I wonder if Martha's complaints about her head hurting could have something to do with drinking a little more Blue Nun with Judy than she had bargained for. All and all the comedic antics and musical talents utilized in this medley by both ladies are nothing short of stellar!

Sometimes she couldn't read the cue cards and whatnot, but she tried to play to it, I think. I think Martha played well with Carol Burnett because at the time their "Chops" with honed.
