Theres not much you can show for her passenger life other than her launch and maiden voyage, the sinking of titanic, collision with the HMS Hawke, the collision with the Nantucket light boat, and her being scrapped- I fully agree on the war part though

@bloxburgimagineering9633 No not really. There's more to her story than that. She did save the HMS Audacious in 1918, her being quarantined in New York Harbour and famously sailing by Mauretania and Aquitania in 1928.

First of a family of three sister ships to be built, survived crashes, a war, economic depression and in the end, while her younger sisters were gone, in the end her own age is what took her out. I like to think that Olympic did it all and managed to survive for her sisters. It's a ship well-deserving of all honors and respect, to both her and her crews and captains. Truly deserving of the nickname "Old Reliable".

Olympic: You set up traps to murder my sister, you slaughtered my innocent cousin, you destroyed so much morale in the troops of the British Empire, and this is how I repay you! You will NOT end my class!!! You will NOT kill my men!!! YOU WILL *NOT,* WIN. THIS. WAR!!!! *rams sub*
U-103: AAAAHHHH!!!! Ugh, Germany... forgive... me... I... I failed...

Imagine being a captain of a submarine trying to sink a passenger ship.
Then said passenger ship casually dodges your torpedo and gives you gentle tap, barely even noticing that you're there. But it's enough. Your ship is instantly doomed.

By the time she was scrapped Olympic had propeller shaft compents from Titanic following repairs from her collision with HMS Hawke.
As well as beds and fittings stamped "433" which is Britannics yard number listed in her auction catelog.

I think so too, especially since she was torpedoed twice in the same time. One missed, but one hit and made a hole. Olympic didn’t sink because of her “inner skin”, implemented after Titanic. The crew didn’t discover the hole until after the war. Also because she rammed and sank lightship Nantucket as well.

In reality, the captain of SM U-103 Claus Rücker didn't go down with his submarine. He was instead amongst the around 30 survivors later captured and brought to England as PoWs. He was also known for being disliked by his crew and other officers in the Kaiserlichemarine, so much so that despite 80 ships sunk (174,655 tons) and 3 ships damaged (9,951 tons), which made him the 9th most successful U-boat commander in WW1, he never got the same recognition as other successful U-boat commanders.

@@DreadnoughtDan_1999 The crew blew the ballast tanks as soon as it became evident that the damage inflicted by the RMS Olympic had sliced a big gash in the U-boat's pressure hull. This sort of damage made a submarine useless since it made it impossible to dive and dangerous to navigate. They were able to surface and started scuttling the U-boat which is what caused it to sink.

Olympic was also present in 1915 when HMS Audacious struck a mine and was sinking. Three attempts to take the battleship in tow by Olympic failed when the tow line parted. There is a picture of Audacious foundering that was taken from the deck of Olympic.

Whenever I see Olympic in this dazzle paint scheme, applied after (not because of) Britannic’s loss, I just feel an aura of courage, but also fury. This ship was supposed to be the first of three of the greatest ships ever built, but tragedy and war destroyed their lives up to that point. Olympic is an angry ship, and she sure as hell does her part to end the Great War so that she can be the sole shining example of what would’ve been her legendary trio.

    • @everythinghistory6770
      @everythinghistory6770 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

I believe Olympic also has a tragic story.
In 1911, she was young and ready for life with a bright future ahead of her. She was happy to have a sister in 1912 but that happiness quickly turns into sadness as Titanic hits the iceberg.
Hearing the cries of Titanic over the Marconi wireless, all she can do is listen. The other ships in the area jam up the signal, almost silencing her dying sister. "SHUT UP! SHUT UP! YOU'RE JAMMING THE SIGNAL!" Olympic yells, there was no response from Titanic. The next morning, news breaks out that Titanic, the ship who was believed to be unsinkable has died.
With the loss of Titanic, Olympic meets her new sister Britannic. The war breaks out and both sisters serve, Britannic is painted up as a hospital ship. Olympic is fearful of losing her after what happened in 1912. To her horror, it happens again. Britannic suffers a severe injury by a German sea mine and becomes an innocent victim of the war.
Enraged, Olympic is painted up in her new dazzle camoflage, she's hungry for revenge. In 1918, U-103 silently stalks Olympic. The submarine opens fire but fails, Olympic spots 103 and turns towards her. Knowing that a German sub was responsible for placing the mine that killed her sister, Olympic angrily rams and sinks 103.
After the war, she stands alone. The first of her trio has outlived both of her sisters. The stock market crash wasn't so kind on her either, it rips people's jobs away and causes their money to become useless.
In the early 1930s, Olympic gets a refit in hopes of attracting people's attention to her again. Unfortunately, her time has come and people no longer wanted to sail aboard her. White Star Line puts her up for auction to save her legacy but all hope is lost.
Olympic, the only one in her family who was lucky enough to survive has grown old. She carried on for her sisters who didn't get a chance to live. With no money and no passengers, she is sent away to the scrapyards. Her silhouette on the horizon makes her look like a ghost of her sisters.
In 1937, the demolition has been completed. Olympic joins Titanic and Britannic and has sailed into the mist of time.

@@everythinghistory6770So well written. I love it.
I feel sorry for the ol' girl. She's my favorite ship ever built, and that's saying something. Titanic is famous for all the wrong reasons, and Britannic was never meant for such bitter job with a gruesome end.
She and Titanic were built alongside each other, whilst Britannic was built in the same gantry spot Olympic was in.
I always saw her with a personality, starting off peaceful, polite, graceful, and friendly, eventually overcome with survivor's guilt, sudden anger outbursts, loneliness, and depression.
She wasn't built for war, unlike her main rivals, Lusitania and Mauretania. She was built to compete for size and luxury, not speed, and more importantly, she was DESTINED to have sisters.
Titanic's tragic and sudden loss kicked Olympic in the heart really hard. When she returned to Southampton after trying to help her sister, her sadness turned to outrage, and she wanted answers on why it happened with so many lives gone down with her.
When Britannic was launched, Olympic's spirit lightened up a bit, saying she might have a second chance with her new sister. But, it was not to be, as the world plunged into sudden chaos, tearing each other apart. When Olympic arrived back in England after dropping off troops, she heard the news that Britannic ran into a mine field. A German mine field. With the loss of her last sister, Olympic was no longer a loving luxury liner, but a vengeful beast starving for battle.
After the war, her depression kicked in, even more so when White Star Line gave her two German superliners as replacement running mates. She didn't want replacements, she wanted her own sisters.
Finally, the Great Depression hit, and Olympic was actually happy when it was confirmed she was gonna be scrapped. She arrived in Jarrow, her engines were shut down one last time, and Olympic finally reunited with her sisters. Like the end of "Titanic" when Rose reunited with Jack.

when Olympic was converted for WWI service she was called HMS instead of RMS. But it is good to see Old Reliable being shown for her ramming of a U-Boat during that war. it's a Shame that everyone always goes on about her sister Titanic because of her sinking on her maiden voyage. And The Olympic not getting any recognition for her service life. she Not only was the lead ship of the class. and yes she resembled Titanic being the first of the class. but unlike her two sister's. she was the only Olympic class liner that Not only had a service career. But she survived the war, survived being rammed herself, but was retired intact after a full service life as a successful passenger liner. unlike her two sister's. She earned her nick name of Old Reliable as that was what she was. Yet so few know about her story as she is never mentioned like her sister Titanic which is truly a shame.

There's so much mythos about Titanic, much of which is false. Many believe that she was one of a kind and truly revolutionary, rather than a second of three and only slightly larger (by some measures, identical by most) than her older sister, which in turn was only marginally larger and soon exceeded by other ships of the era. Or that had Titanic not sunk we'd still have her today as a museum ship like the RMS Queen Mary, unaware that a nearly identical ship was scrapped.

I don't know much about WWI subs, but WWII and modern subs would do an emergency blow of their ballast tanks. All their spare oxygen would be blown into those tanks, pushing the water out of them. Of course it doesn't work if the sub is too flooded, though

@@ryanhlavaty3680 Would that work with huge gashes in the exterior hull (my understanding of most subs is the exterior hull has the ballast tanks and the pressure hull is inside that) sliced by Olympic's propellers? I'd expect the air to just come right back out. Maybe enough ballast tanks are intact to float? I also recall reading that research submersibles have ballast blocks on the bottom that can be jettisoned in an emergency, which should allow the submarine to surface even if ballast tanks are flooded. One I even recall had steel balls held in place by electromagnets so the ballast would be dropped automatically in case of power loss. Do military submarines (historic or modern) have a similar feature? The sub in Das Boot apparently didn't, they were unsure if they'd be able to surface by blowing their tanks but succeeded in the end, if they could have simply jettisoned ballast blocks it would have been much easier.

The creators have spend quiet an effort on production it seems but did insufficient research in how a U Boat would/could behave in such situation.
While on surface, prior to emergency dive, crew be present on watch in the conning tower, the idea that conning tower would be devoid of crew and captain would use the periscope to assess the situation on the surface is ridiculous. The captain would be one of the last to vacate the tower prior to sub going under.
The position and distance of the U Boat of the Olympic bow would not give enough time to launch the boats stern torpedoes with sufficient minimal distance between the two required for their effective launch (max speed of a submerged U Boat was only 7 knots)
How does the U Boat find itself suddenly on the ships port side after torps launch ???
The subs control room does not resemble Types VII/IX's used by Kriegsmarine in any way.
Clearly most of the comments here are either by folks personally involved in this project or who are unaware of the nature and specifics of submarine warfare in WW2. For those who wish to see one of the best sub movies, see Das Boot for a true cinematic reality check. With some research this could have been so much more.

great video - would like to see the movie. If the propeller had hit the sub outer casing, wouldn't it have damaged/unbalance the prop, causing instant and very noticeable vibrations?

    • @quillmaurer6563
      @quillmaurer6563 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Probably would have caused some damage, but the propeller blades are probably much tougher than the sub's outer shell (not the pressure hull) so damage was likely minimal. But those on board certainly would have felt something, if not vibration from a damaged propeller they certainly would have felt it whacking the sub. Would have scared the piss out of anyone not knowing what was happening, but probably those on the bridge who were intentionally ramming the sub would have been celebrating a pretty definitive and brutal kill. Which brings up another question: Which propellers killed more people, Olympic's (on purpose) or Britannic's (by accident)? Titanic's don't have a kill count, at least not directly.

Exactly, and from the starboard view we see of the ship, her lifeboat count of 16 boats under davits is identical to the count on her maiden voyage. In reality, by the time Olympic was carrying US Troops across the Atlantic as shown here, her decks were completely filled with lifeboats, barely room to even stand on the deck.
