Leo Ornstein - Piano Concerto (5 THOUSAND SUBSCRIBERS TRIBUTE)

  • A pyrotechnical dazzler, Ornstein’s Concerto was clearly written by a pianist with a physical passion for hammering every inch of the keyboard. From the first note, the writing for piano teems with raw virtuosity. Using a traditional three-movement concerto form, the work glories in chromatic runs and gapped scales, as well as chords built of fourths and fifths (no tame triads for Ornstein). Rapid-fire runs and octave gymnastics alternate within toccata-like sections and passages of static repetition. Defying the reputation of modernists for taking their art too seriously, this work brims with fun and wild daring. Like watching a high-diver, it leaves the listener breathless, wondering if a safe landing is possible.
    Fifty years after its composition, in a letter to Oliver Daniel, who was then preparing a biography of Stokowski, Ornstein recalled rehearsals for the premiere of the Concerto and gave a sense of the challenge of performing a brand-new work:
    "I remember our meeting when Stokowski looked at the score. He had a funny little room at the head of a rickety stairway back of the stage of the old Academy of Music. He studied the score for a long time, then turned to me and said, ‘Let’s do it.’ We eventually gave two performances in Philadelphia and one in New York. He must have realized the difficulty of the piece because instead of leaving the rehearsal for Friday morning, the day of the concert, he set the first rehearsal for the previous Monday. Then his professionalism was very evident. He turned to the men and indicated that there would have to be not only extra rehearsals but longer ones. He practically devoted the entire week’s work to the Concerto and gave a dazzling performance. It was entirely clear to me after working with him that under the surface appearance of great bravura there was a thoroughness that might almost be considered of an academic nature."

    I just noticed this. Thank you for doing it. My earlier version was done when TH-cam had tighter limits, so I had to break it into sections - and I didn't include the score of the 2-piano version, which is extremely helpful (and clearly a labor of love).

    And, oh yeah, long story about me making this video.
    I apologize, if I published it behind schedule (was supposed to publish this on the 5,000-sub mark, but was already more than that by the time I got this up). Laziness got the worst of me the previous week while preparing this video, and it was self-explanatory from there. My last chance was to upload this last Friday, but have to join my parents for a two-day vacation to the islands the next day. Was a big spoil-off for me, realizing that I never got it out here in time (I was on the last movement by the time I left, by the way), and so, wasn't able to enjoy the vacation as much as I wanted to. By the time we got home yesterday, I still experienced some "interruptions" throughout that time, but managed to finish and upload the video by late evening, despite my parents' wishes to put me to bed early.
    When will I ever learn, the lazy-ass bitch of me... >:/
    Nonetheless, I'm very happy that we -- all the more-than-5,000 of us - have gone this far. Please do stay tuned for more interesting (hopefully) uploads, ladies and gentlemen. :D

    This is the kind of avant-garde that is pleasant to listen to. Shadows of Scriabin, Roslavets, and Rachmaninov are brooding in this opus.
    Of all avant-garde composers, Ornsein is the most Late Romantic. What’s more, he is æsthetically pleasing.
    Update: this concerto is awesome! Just awesome!

      No one stated above that he was Late Romantic. At one moment in time, he had been considered the flagship of avant-garde. Just that this concerto is... such a wonderful assembly of fluid chords and exotic harmonies... which is the opposite of dissonant music of the XXth century heavy-duty machinery (Mosolov, Prokofiev).

    • @brucedavies8154
      @brucedavies8154 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's true his earlier work was more avant garde/futurist, i.e Wild Men's dance and Suicide in an Airplane and poems of 1917. But he stopped writing works of that harshness after he left the stage as a concert pianist. There are still moments that pop up in his more lush and "romantic" pieces that almost seem like two conflicted sides of his musical nature.
      I'd agree he was a romantic composer in the sense of how he expressed himself musically and judging from the time he was born. He had over a century to write music and experience it, which is quite amazing really.
      Sorry went a bit off topic.

    • @DeflatingAtheism
      @DeflatingAtheism 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's so late-Romantic that I would say it's quintessentially Expressionist. The emphasis of texture, dynamics, and harmony over theme gives the feeling of rising and falling on waves of emotion.

      I've played some of his work, they're far more intimidating on the page then they are strictly in performance, it's simply a matter of insuring that all the notes are fit in properly. The finale of his fourth sonata includes such nightmarish polyrhythms as a 13/12 in a 9/8 time signature, which was horrifying for me to see on the page but quite honestly in performance it didn't turn out to be nearing as mind-bending as I'd thought.

    • @hadenplouffe3976
      @hadenplouffe3976 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've never really used the metronome much in that situation, my strategy was just to practice the tuplet figuration and get it up to tempo and in my hands and as soon as I could manage playing that approximately in tempo I started to include the other hand and just worked on that a ton. Listening to recordings didn't hurt, but ultimately it was the separate hand practice that made things really end up working on that front for me.

      It's harder for the performer due to it being rare and the rhythmic cadence not being internalised to the degree that a triple metre or a symmetric time signature would be. But for the composer? No problem.
