Proxima PX1711 Not What I Expected But It Just Might Be A Winner!

Proxima make great watches. Not all the time but I have reviewed enough to know quality when I see it. The Proxima PX1711 might not be what you expect in an homage watch but it its an homage to the Serica 5303...a very loose homage!
Since Serica released their 5303 a couple of years back we have had a couple of Serica 5303 homages from Ipose (Ix&Dao) and Tandorio. It seems Proxima are a little late with their version.
The Proxima PX1711 does not have the bespoke milanese strap nor does it have the same style of case as the Serica 5303 or Ipose 5303 but the design cues are still there. What this watch does have though is one of the best watch case and bracelets available on AliExpress. The case and bracelet are from the well known Proxima px1697!
In this Proxima watch review I will review the Proxima PX1711 and see how it stacks up against the original and the Ipose. It will be up to you to make a decision on its worthiness.

Thanks for the review. First I’ve seen for this new model. I have the PX1697 in white and really like it, particularly the great build quality and how the case & bracelet wear on wrist. And so I bought and just received the PX1171 in black. Build quality is also excellent and it is a real beauty to look at. Unlike yours, the black model has all white dial hands which pop against the enamel black dial. Agree with you that the space above the 12 marker seems a bit empty. But for me this is a minor issue. My overall initial reaction is very positive.

The Proxima is a looker, wow. Applied indices, very nice. And the dot indices are closer to the chapter ring, I really like that. For me, the Proxima is prettier than IXDAO, and also prettier than the Serica original.
This is great although I’m a bit distracted by the old “meat and potatoes” at 12. The white dial is something I’m not into. I don’t hate it, but it reminds me of a wall that’s been primed and waiting for a coat of paint. I.e. looks unfinished. I’d love to see some dial colors like a mustard yellow (Halios seaforth yellow), an Orient Kamasu maroon, a Seiko marinemaster green sunburst, or Longines blue sunburst.
Excellent idea regarding more color options. I think the white dial gives it a handsome, tuxedo look, one of the few times I really like a white dial, but I have to agree, this would look amazing with a sunburst green, or maybe a champagne dial
I love my 1697, the fit and the slime line look when it sits on wrist is something to behold. Not too keen on this version personally but, might be just because I already have the Ix&Dao so, it's nothing massively new outside of some little changes. There's a good shout for it being in this lovely case tjough
Another thing I don't like, on this and the Ix&Dao is, that negative space on the dial. Too sterile. I'm not a fan of sterile dials at all and these just look a bit bare
I like the IPOSE. Very intrigued by that unique watch. Perhaps after I get done building my super beefed up Seiko SKX013, I'll get one.
Good review! I own the black dial blue bezel IXDAO. I Ienjoy this watch. It will stay in my collection. I am interested in this new Proxima version. It is quite a bit different and you get the light catcher case!
Yeah...difficult review to get right and keep it balanced. I liked my Ipose version but being the V1;my bezel pip was badly mis-aligned. Because of my small wrist it had to go as at 48 to 49mm effective lug to lug it was just bordering on being a bit big on my wrist. Really liked it but this is also a nice piece. It wears better on me and the case is awesome .

I'm not sure why but I both love and don't love this new take on the watch. There so any things that are genuine improvements on the Ipose but I can't help feeling that it needs that Milanese strap to tie it together with those well done end links. In the end though that watch is absolutely gorgeous.
I have the PX1697 and the case is the best looking and most comfortable of any watch I own, so great to see it now being used with other designs. I didn't like the long stalks to the indices on the original and the IXDAO copy, I also prefer applied indices, so this design is more attractive to me. It's also a true homage and not just a copy of the original, which I also like. You can buy versions with the Proxima brand on the dial, which will appeal to people like me who dislike sterile dials. Proxima are a bit late to the party with this one, but it is different enough to still be a good seller for them.

A tricky one this , more a "homage" than copy as such but nicely done but i reckon i'd still go for the ipose because of the bracelet & overall aesthetic , i agree there's a lot proxima could do with that case that isn't being taken advantage of but at least the qc is on point .

Nice review John I'm with you on the gap above the the 12 position , just looks a little odd but overall a very nicely finished watch and the bezel alignment is spot on.
I have the the latest version Ipose and the bezel insert is misaligned so am really hacked off especially after paying extra for the sw200 movement .
But a version 2 of this watch with the above mentioned revision plus maybe some different dial colour combinations and I'd definitely buy one not too bothered about the mesh bracelet.

Congratulations on the "No Unicorn" version. I mean... What the actual hell, man!?
I like a few Proximas and I have no problem with good homage watches. I really liked the one where the 'second hand' ran inside of a separate track in the dial. The Black dial version was constantly sold out and I won't wear a watch with a fully lumed dial. It might scare my dog or something.
But this watch is very tidy. Just the right size too.

There are differences of course, but if I caught a glimpse of this on someone’s wrist I would assume it’s a Serica due to the hands and indices. Especially since there is no logo and the Serica also doesn’t include a logo. It’s still too similar for me. I prefer when a watch can stand completely on its own. But I’m sure a lot of people will go for it.

Proxima makes some excellent watches. I’m not against 1:1 Homages, but I prefer these Homages. It looks like the original but it’s different enough where no one is going to mistake it for the original. Cracking review as usual Sir. Yeah that 12…🤔. A winner otherwise.
Yeah it's weird but you just don't see it when it's on....but ya know it's there haha!
Agreed. I like how the PX1697 looks almost like a CW, but isn't a clone. It doesn't have a trident counterweight, for example, and doesn't match ant particular model.

Great photography, I loved the part when you panned down from the lighthouse and it was exactly 12.00 😁. I think I prefer that Proxima case with their other dials, by toning down the Serica look, it has lost too much.
It is a rather strange version. I can't decide whether they have been lazy and it is just a late cash grab or that they know the case and bracelet sell themselves and they have skinned down their own version. I just with they would have at least attempted the bracelet and end-link. They have the know-how...but that leads to the last option...was cost the main consideration?...Thanks for noticing the deliberate lighthouse and 12 midday shots :)
@@johnswatchjoint I am sure you are correct, the bracelet is to save money. San Martin were bad for that too, but seem to have decided to try some new styles lately.

Interesting and as usual, a thoughtful review. I bought the PX1697 this past June largely based on your review. The applied indices and the superior crystal on the PX1711, as well as Proxima's apparent reputation for customer service might give it an edge over the IX&DAO. The lack of date is odd and I would prefer a six o'clock date, however, one small quibble I have with the 1697 is that I don't care for the font. A clean sans serif would have been better. This actually bothers me more than the slightly mismatched lume color in daylight on the white dial version.
I do like the exhibition back on the 1711. I'm thinking it would probably fit the 1697 and I may hit Proxima up and see if they would sell me one.
Stephen is a great guy and I have seen many pics of modded Proxima's straight from Proxima themselves. Message him at the store on AliExpress. :)
@@johnswatchjoint Thanks for the tip! I had a small issue where one of the quick change tabs arrived broken on the bracelet. He sent one out and I got it in a couple of weeks to the US. Is there a forum or something somewhere where you saw these mods?

As much as I love my PX1697, I'm not a fan of this one. But it's just me and my taste 😊

Hi John. I always try to get my info right and I did speak to Stephen before announcing it was the same case,because like you, I thought it was familiar but different. There has as you say been some work done to polish and refinish the lugs. I had a hard time with this review as both the Ipose and this are good. Ipose did a better copy but this Proxima will suit smaller wrists like mine because the case and bracelet are simply excellent. I like them both but both could be better for differing reasons. Сase proxima very reminiscent - Seiko, while ipose - reference Seamaster and bespoke melanese gives that same alluring effect! Similar and at the same time quite different watches...
The Proxima case is itself an homage to the CW light capture case though it has had extra polishing on the upper lugs for this watch :)

Sorry I don't understand. The bezel is for manual operation. You can use it as a countdown timer for when Diving...or for cooking your eggs 😉

Yes , they are homaging the original but it is still a manual bezel to turn. Of course you can always set the bezel manually to another time zone if you have to:)
These homages are a great example why you should sometimes just get the original and make no compromises. You'll appreciate this John, but I think the original just has such clarity and purpose in design, it's fully resolved as you may say. All the choices made are clearly well considered and made with a holistic view towards the design in its entirety. On the otherhand, the homages are just taking the end product without truly having to make any decisions of their own, just adaptions to their production process, and it shows, they just don't come together in the same way.
Personally, the Serica isn't to my taste, it's not a watch that I would want, but at the same time, it's not to my taste because the designer's vision doesn't match my own, but I still respect the design a lot. The homages aren't to my taste because they lack the soul of the original, they're shadows on the wall. Neither fish nor fowl.

It is an emotive subject as I say BUT even though I wanted the original Serica, I could not buy it with its flawed movement. It was just within my reach financially yet I chose the Ipose initially because it had the flavour of the Serica and definitely scratched that itch. Ultimately it too had flaws, but for those who just cannot afford the Serica, the Ipose and the Proxima can fill that emotional void. To them those watches are not soulless. They are attainable. To have others tell them they should not buy these watches, I feel is disingenuous and shows that man is flawed. These are just trinkets at the end of the day. I do not judge. Just my thoughts. @@johnswatchjoint I think people should pretty much buy what they like, and enjoy it, but my enjoyment definitely rests partly in design considerations, as might be evident. And yeah, that original movement sure was a doozy.
It's good that we can discuss it. When I released the review on the Ipose an awful lot of the comments got flagged by the bots and I had to delete some myself. Too many personal attacks and a lot of sputim...over a trinket. It was disheartening to say the least. I am on the waiting list for a Serica as they have relented and opted for another movement option due out in December BUT that in itself is also controversial. It looks like the owner is pretty much set in his ways and has not bowed to the pressure put on him regarding the initial movement choice...the second choice is also controversial and I will wait to see how it performs before pulling the trigger :)

The Proxima is great but too smalll for my 8 inch wrists. The Ipose seemed a little small to me. Otherwise i would be all over this
The Ipose would suit you better as it is 40mm with 48mm lug to lug . It wears like a 41mm and was just too large for my wrist. Check out my review.
The specs on this one is a winner for me. Smaller lug to lug needs to be more utilised by the Chinese brands
