    I am glad I found this video, thank you both for sharing your journey. I plan to do this trip one day. I have ran many miles on the Missouri and would love to be able to one day say I've ran them all. The advice I found in these comments was wonderful, hopefully I will have as supportive of a crew as you guys did. Great to see the hospitality along the way.

    I travel many times on Mississippi and going out to lake michigan very cool to do what you guys did. But when we lock we were always required to tie off motor off and life jackets on.. he must have been real nice lock master...

    Me and my 12 year old grandson did 300 miles from Lafayette, IN to Evansville, In on my 22 ft pontoon in June 2018. We are doing 400 miles down the Cumberland River in June 2020. Tennessee River 2021, Ohio River 2022 and the BIG 1600 miles from Minneapolis to Mobile in the summer of 2023. That was a great trip you guys took there. Don't forget to wear your life jackets when going though the locks.

    Great video. I've got an 84 sylvan off-shore . Boat looks identical. Only difference is mine is the smaller 18' with outboard. I replaced every inch of wood in it Including transom. And hung a 175 merc black max on. Top speed of 55 torque all day out of the hole and cruises effortlessly at 30. I've boated the Mississippi around Galena illinois. I'd love to try this!

      Good for you!!! they are just about indestructible, be careful to not ever over heat is and it will run for ever, you may have a leaky rivet or two and the interior screws need snugged up from time to time but they are wonderful boats!! leave your engine cover open so the transom dries out well after each use so it doesn't rot I've seen a few that have, I have hundreds of hrs and thousands of miles on mine, I will keep it for ever, enjoy!!

    • @FloatDriveRide
      @FloatDriveRide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jameswilson9977 if you can get to them you can seal them up from the inside pretty easy, if you cant, do not stress over it and make sure your bilge pump works, pretty common to take on a small amount of water on and older riveted boat.

    • @FloatDriveRide
      @FloatDriveRide  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Old Crow is one of the oldest bourbon brand names in the country and it was shipped up and down the river on paddle boats so it seemed a fitting name for the vessel, I also like to drink it :}

    Thanks for this video. It is rare to find a long format video on YT showing destination boating on our rivers done simply. If you have a boat and trailer there is a lot to sample out there. I hope you all have more boat adventures planned.

      Thanks for the nice words! it was an amazing experience, the logistics of finding gas was probably the hardest part but everything about it was all I hoped it would be, the old Starcraft was the right tool for the job, as you said, we kept it very simple indeed! I would like to do the top section of the Mississippi at some point, I have all the charts and have put a little planning into it.
      The last couple years I have been doing similar destination travel on an off road motorcycle specifically the continental divide from Canada to Mexico off road through the Rockies, I have a couple videos of those on my YT page as well. Take care and Happy New Year!!

    • @FloatDriveRide

      It has the Mercruiser 170 4 cylinder with heat exchanger, as far as speed and gallons per hr I will need to refer to my log book that is In the boat at our farm about 3hrs away, I will be out there next week and post all the relevant info, I can tell you that gas can be hard to come by, the boat has a 35 gallon tank and we carried 35 gallons on the bow, we needed it all on multiple occasions... I will get you more details next week, safe boating!!

    • @FloatDriveRide
      @FloatDriveRide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Looked at my log book, we didn't track it real close but be used about 5 gal per hr with a cruise speed of around 25-28mph, plus the speed of the river flow that was only 5-6mph due to the low water, we boated on average 12 hrs a day with a goal of 300+ river miles per day.

    • @FloatDriveRide
      @FloatDriveRide  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Its a wonderful boat! tough as nails. it measures 20' but they call it a 19'. it has the big 170hp 4 cylinder Mercruiser engine, gets good mileage for a boat and is still light enough to be pulled with a midsize vehicle. I will never let mine go. it can travel, fish or pull tubes and wake boards. not perfect at anything but pretty good at a lot of things!! hope you find one! The hull was never changed on the islander, the Chieftan had a different hull but 2012 islander is the same as my 1985 as far as hull design goes, some had the lower cabin set up but thats the only change I know of.

      @@FloatDriveRide Hi, we really appreciate that you took the time to reply. We will keep looking I guess we must be patient as they are only a few for sale in Canada. The important things we are checking are conditions of floor, transom, foam, and rivets under hull for any signs of weakning. Is there anything else we shall pay attention to? Also wondering how it feels on waves. Thanks.

    • @FloatDriveRide
      @FloatDriveRide  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@liliere1 you are spot on with the things to watch out for, especially the floor at the rear and the transom. I have been around aluminum boats my entire life and they all seem to take on a little water, just the nature of a riveted boat I suppose, I have an auxiliary bilge pump wired up but I've never needed it, having said that my bilge does kick on every 30 minutes or so for just a few seconds but not enough to worry about. these boats have a deep enough V hull that I have never felt nervous even in very rough water, just point it at a wave and it will take it, the hull diverts water well with very little splash into the boat making for a very dry ride. because aluminum boats are much lighter than fiberglass it will ride rougher from being light but it is more than made up for with fuel economy and ease in towing, not to mention the ability to beach the thing on rocks with no hull damage! Good luck with your search!! let me know if you find one, I will want to know all about it (:

Also, what would be your suggestion to deal with the refueling process of a trip like this? The only legitimate concern with their setup is the possibility of someone stealing their fuel.

    im planning a adventure simular to this in a 2020 Grumman sport boat with a yamaha F20 starting at the missouri head waters and making my way all the way home to Conneticut via multible rivers and canal systems. tying to gauge how long it would take at about 200 miles a day.

    • @FloatDriveRide
      @FloatDriveRide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sounds like a great trip!! we moved fast, our goal was around 300 miles per day, that doesn't allow much time to stop and smell the roses... we had ride arrangements at he end without much flexibility, we ran about 28-30 mph plus the flow of the river about 5-6 mph at that time but it was a drought year, the Old Crow has a 170 hp 4 cylinder inboard, we burned about 4 gallons per hr or 5 mpg. If you have the time to only do 200 miles per day you will not regret it, either way, it is a trip of a lifetime that will be burned into your soul in a good way!! please link me to some pics of your adventure!! Safe travels my friend!!
