Off Road Adventure
Chain-sawin' & Log-draggin' our path down a mountain road in Oregon
In Sept. 2022, while driving the Trans America Trail, just north of California into Oregon, we found ourselves on a mountain road in the Fremont National Forest, with fallen trees, burnt by forest fires. We attempted chain-sawing & log-dragging our way down the road, so as not to have to backtrack... We almost made it, but after about 6 trees, we came upon one that 'stumped' us, and would take a chainsaw much larger that we had to get through it, but we sure had fun trying! The wife learned some log-draggin' skills in the Land Cruiser, while I ran the chainsaw. She claims her PSR rating went up! HA!

มุมมอง 802 ปีที่แล้ว
As a part of our Trans America Trail adventure, we found Engineer Pass to be a scenic trail of shelf roads and views for days, mixed with rich history of one of the most famous mining areas in the country. It's located in the San Juan Mountains, between Lake City and Ouray, Colorado, along the Alpine Loop, at 12,800 feet elevation. Our 1999 Land Cruiser did a great job handling all this trail h...

Great adventure, no regrets! #floatdriveride

You should have used Rain-Ex..
100% should have used rain-x, honestly not sure I even knew it was a thing at the time. I still look back on the adversity and it makes me smile! Cheers brother!
do you not know the size of the vessel? like whywasn't it mentioned
LOA is 19 feet. It’s a StarCraft Islander 191. I think the vintage is 1985.
Correct! 1985 Islander measures about 19.5' sorry that info got overlooked. Still have it and use it every season. Cheers!!
Curious, how much fuel did you use....Thanks and great video
I will need to check my log book to verify, but I'm thinking around 50-60 gallons per day so probably 4-500 gallons, this was in 2012 and it sure felt expensive at the time..
Not much documented about this part of the US. Thanks for showing the armpit of the lower SE US...lol...

Thanks!!! I forgot how damn old I am until you knew those songs while splinting your finger!!! Lol I thought how do these old men know those songs??? Then I looked in the damn mirror!!! Lol lmao!!! Thanks!!! Lol
Great video, thanks!!!!!
Hi Brian, How tall is your garage door opening? (looking at 0:37). Will a Starcraft Islander fit in a garage with a 7 foot tall opening? Or will I have to remove the pilot windshield?
I have an 8' door and I barley get it in... windshield would have to come off.
Did u sleep on boat?
Is Air Supply the greatest band ever?
Negative 😂
Cheap plastic fuel cans on the bow? Accident waiting to happen.
Well, Debbie downer. still using the same cans accident free in 2022... Thanks for watching, check out some of my other adventures, I make lots of questionable decisions and will likely make many more. Cheers!!
Hey Bob, your comment caught my eye. Just curious if you would be willing to share your thoughts on how this is an accident waiting to happen? Also, what would be your suggestion to deal with the refueling process of a trip like this? The only legitimate concern with their setup is the possibility of someone stealing their fuel.
18:47 - Unleaded Plus?? Did that gas have ethanol in it? That crap will tear up your fuel pump seals.
it probably did but we burned it too fast to care, she gets premium at home or if its going to sit, still going strong in 2022, not a single repair before or after the trip :)
What Engine you have on Your StarCraft my parents have a StarCraft we have a Mark Twain speed boat
Mercruiser 170 in-line 4cyl
Nice Starcraft. I want one. Don't like my chances of finding one here in Melbourne Australia though. Wondering what the total fuel consumption was, looks like a shitload. If ever I visit the States this is how I wanna see it. Thanks for sharing.
I priced putting a 19 foot sailboat in a 20 foot container with trailer, and shipping it from UK to California. $2000. so I think it is quite feasible to ship one to Australia in a 20 ft container
I can't figure out where to get my windows leak and fixed
Where did you get the dual head lights for the xr650l? I’m looking for some for mine.
Those are lights from a Honda Rukus turned upside down and LED bulbs, I dig them :)
Nice video Capn' Stabbin
i fixed up an old Starcraft supersport 18 ft (74/75yr) and love it. these old aluminum boats are great! enjoyed your video!
Thanks! Enjoy your sweet ride my friend!
Great video!!! From Memphis
14:43 Didn't know the Mississippi River ran through Alaska also, must make a hard turn north 100 miles north of Memphis lol
"yea so were in this lock in this little shitty boat" "hey what the fuck!?" hahahahahah
Um Parkville is in Missouri
OOPS, no disrespect intended my friend!!
Great video. I've got an 84 sylvan off-shore . Boat looks identical. Only difference is mine is the smaller 18' with outboard. I replaced every inch of wood in it Including transom. And hung a 175 merc black max on. Top speed of 55 torque all day out of the hole and cruises effortlessly at 30. I've boated the Mississippi around Galena illinois. I'd love to try this!
Just seen this . From St Joe had always dreamed about that trip . Thank guys
I am glad I found this video, thank you both for sharing your journey. I plan to do this trip one day. I have ran many miles on the Missouri and would love to be able to one day say I've ran them all. The advice I found in these comments was wonderful, hopefully I will have as supportive of a crew as you guys did. Great to see the hospitality along the way.

Did that route from Helena, Mt in June 2019. Epic ride!
i miss my islander logged many many hours on the chesapeke ,on my 77
Nice video.
I travel many times on Mississippi and going out to lake michigan very cool to do what you guys did. But when we lock we were always required to tie off motor off and life jackets on.. he must have been real nice lock master...
Great Video!! Really liked how you ended the video with your slide show. Congrats on your trip!. One question, That hill from hell at 10:00, was that a expert section? I'm riding it this coming up summer solo on a Big GS. Not sure I want to do that one alone.
Sorry for late reply, You can do it on a GS but take it easy, I often wished I was on a smaller bike and rode more aggressively at times than I should have...
The endless "what bike" question. I am going to do this next year. I can't decide between my 250 klx and the honda CB500X. I rented a CB500X in Patagonia and it was pretty capable but we didn't do anything as technical as this. What do you think?
@@Bigblueplumbingservice I think between the two bikes you mentioned, the Honda 500 would be one I recommend. I used GPS Kevin's route, and it wasn't really difficult. A few challenging areas, but a lot of easy long stretches. So because of the long trip, it would be much more comfortable on the 500.
@ericnphx5585 I did a bunch of the Trans European Trail TET last year on an Enfield Himalayan. Super fun but think the Honda has more power and comfort. Your vid shows some gnarly section but I guess that is the highlight reel?
Cut the music!
Start to finish....nice work!👍
im planning a adventure simular to this in a 2020 Grumman sport boat with a yamaha F20 starting at the missouri head waters and making my way all the way home to Conneticut via multible rivers and canal systems. tying to gauge how long it would take at about 200 miles a day.
Sounds like a great trip!! we moved fast, our goal was around 300 miles per day, that doesn't allow much time to stop and smell the roses... we had ride arrangements at he end without much flexibility, we ran about 28-30 mph plus the flow of the river about 5-6 mph at that time but it was a drought year, the Old Crow has a 170 hp 4 cylinder inboard, we burned about 4 gallons per hr or 5 mpg. If you have the time to only do 200 miles per day you will not regret it, either way, it is a trip of a lifetime that will be burned into your soul in a good way!! please link me to some pics of your adventure!! Safe travels my friend!!
post a pic of your vessel, I'm not very up on modern boats but I would love to see it!
Nice ride. Question....what time of the year did you go and how was the heat?
We left August 22, 2019. It was definatly warmer than the top half but not unbearable, we would usually start the day at altitude and pretty darn chilly in Colorado, in New Mexico the mornings were still chilly but you wanted your mesh gear in the afternoon, my jacket is a three season set up and worked well but I wished on both trips that I had pants that vented better, you definatly wind up needing gear for all situations and it is frustrating to carry such bulk but i wouldn't be without it, on the top half the mornings in Montana and Idaho were near freezing at times and i struggled with cold hands and was longing for heated grips, i finally strapped on my annoyingly large elephant ear wind deflectors and those made it tolerable, if you watch my top half video from 2018 you can see that set up. Safe riding to ya!!
Thanks for the response. I will check out your other video as well. I have been all over Colorado (used to live there) and Utah and in elevation it is really cold at night. I have heated gear for those cold morning as well as the heated grips. Excellent vid.
Many of us want to know the details of your power plant, and your fuel consumption
It has the Mercruiser 170 4 cylinder with heat exchanger, as far as speed and gallons per hr I will need to refer to my log book that is In the boat at our farm about 3hrs away, I will be out there next week and post all the relevant info, I can tell you that gas can be hard to come by, the boat has a 35 gallon tank and we carried 35 gallons on the bow, we needed it all on multiple occasions... I will get you more details next week, safe boating!!
Looked at my log book, we didn't track it real close but be used about 5 gal per hr with a cruise speed of around 25-28mph, plus the speed of the river flow that was only 5-6mph due to the low water, we boated on average 12 hrs a day with a goal of 300+ river miles per day.
I am 3 years late getting the info, but just what Need as I go to see about buying a similar boat, with similar power. Thaks so much for making the effort ! sharing video with my wife now. , @@FloatDriveRide
THANK YOU !!!@@FloatDriveRide
Many of us want to know the details of your power plant, and fuel consumption.
I am buying this exact same boat this Friday. So excited man!
Good for you!!! they are just about indestructible, be careful to not ever over heat is and it will run for ever, you may have a leaky rivet or two and the interior screws need snugged up from time to time but they are wonderful boats!! leave your engine cover open so the transom dries out well after each use so it doesn't rot I've seen a few that have, I have hundreds of hrs and thousands of miles on mine, I will keep it for ever, enjoy!!
Brian D. Smith thanks for the tips Brian! What can a guy do about leaky rivets.
@@jameswilson9977 if you can get to them you can seal them up from the inside pretty easy, if you cant, do not stress over it and make sure your bilge pump works, pretty common to take on a small amount of water on and older riveted boat.
Brian D. Smith that’s sound advice! What would you use to seal it?
Hey do you have any more videos of showing the boat. I bought a project 20' spectrum that I want a cabin on and would like to see more of yours. I have an email we can contact threw also if you don't mind
I don't really have any other video showing the cabin, I would be happy to send you some detailed pics if you have something particular you would like a look at??

Me and my 12 year old grandson did 300 miles from Lafayette, IN to Evansville, In on my 22 ft pontoon in June 2018. We are doing 400 miles down the Cumberland River in June 2020. Tennessee River 2021, Ohio River 2022 and the BIG 1600 miles from Minneapolis to Mobile in the summer of 2023. That was a great trip you guys took there. Don't forget to wear your life jackets when going though the locks.
Sounds like your making great memories with your grandson!! safe travels!!!
Hey mr @everchevy. How were the trips?
@@eliwetch2944 I completed the Cumberland River last year before I had unexpected heart surgery in September. Looking to take on the Tennessee River next year. I just keep plugging away and hope to get them all completed before I turn 70. Thanks for asking.
