It's not a matter of storage capacity, of even RAM, but of the color displaying capabilities of the console, and while it offers some improvements, the CD add-on is still dependant on the Genesis palette.

It looks like Probe didn't play the actual arcade game much because they have the music out of place in a lot of cases. Things are missing in the backgrounds. I'm not sure if that is a layer issue. I know that the Genesis and SNES obviously can not display as many layers as the arcade hardware. One background that caught my eye was the background with the statues of the warriors. On the Genesis and SegaCD, the background is not correct. It displays both ninjas while leaving Liu Kang out. Also the life bars on the SegaCD are way up at the top with the score below it. I imagine that was another layer issue. If you look at the SNES version the warriors block out the life bar if you jump. An obvious layer issue but I imagine that Sculptured software didn't think it would be noticed. That is why I think on MK2 and MK3 the names were taken out of the life bars and put on the same layer.

My opinion has always been that Sega CD was the beginning of the death of Sega as a hardware company. They essentially pushed out a product quickly without adding any value to the consumers. The SCD added FMV and some insignificant hardware features (sprite scaling). But still essentially relied on the genesis hardware for gameplay. They pulled the same crap again 3 years later with 32X and then finally dropped the saturn a year and a half later. The saturn was already surpassed by the playstation. By that point all consumer confidence was gone in Sega. These were expensive upgrades ($300 SCD, $150 32X) that were short lived and added marginal improvement. If they had just devoted time to developing and releasing the Saturn, they would still be around. The Dreamcast was light years ahead of the competition in 1999, but again, consumers had become weary of Sega.

    • @stephandolby
      @stephandolby 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think a lot falls on the design of the Mega Drive, and hence the need (?) to boost its performance to compete. They left out hardware sprite scaling and rotation as well as a larger colour palette (and presumably more RAM) due to more complex circuitry forcing lower yields, plus no doubt stopping the Mega Drive from being a straight System 16A for the home, but kept Mark III compatibility even though it wasn't a successful product in Japan (and looking back, was the Power Base Converter even that popular?). A Mega Drive with those extra hardware features would've been more expensive, but the Mega CD would've just been a CD drive without additional hardware (thus cheaper), and the 32X wouldn't have even been a thought. Hell, if the Mega Drive was released later, perhaps the hardware would've been cheap enough to produce - some of it made its way into the Mega CD, after all.
I can't be too hard on Sega for the Mega CD really; after all, Nintendo were doing the exact same thing, until they fell out with Sony, and you know what happened next... It could have been worse though - Sega were originally thinking of a standalone stop-gap between the Mega Drive and Saturn, which later became the 32X add-on. I suppose it's easy to focus on Sega's hardware woes but the truth is, whilst pretty much every other manufacturer released dumb and/or unsuccessful ideas, Sega did it multiple times.

gurgy3 that's exactly what happened! I know because I live through that time! Nintendo knows to never make add-ons because what happened to Sega could happen to them! They know just to make a decent system make great games then make a next generation system 6 years later! I kind of makes me wonder about Sony and Microsoft with there mid generation consoles! The Sega CD version even uses gameplay footage from the SNES port in its intro video with the guy yelling Mortal Kombat like a lunatic. That alone is an admission that the SNES version is the superior port in spite of it lacking the blood and fatalities. The Sega CD rendition should have been a vast improvement over Genesis and SNES. It clearly was a rushed cash grab, had it been done properly it could have been arcade perfect in every aspect!

Idk game play wise the snes was overly sluggish sometimes the punches and kicks won’t even happen, while the sprites were a little better Jenny just plays more smoothly like the arcade , in the snes it acts weird when two guys throw projectiles at the same time , I’ll give you guys street fighter but mk was ours while you guys where playing donkey Kong we were doing real bloody fatalities with blood and gore , while you guys we’re settling for tons of sweat and gay death moves lol 😂

I wouldn't go that far. The CD wins in being able to output the video aspects of the arcade, but the color palette is still garbage. The soundtrack is pretty much straight out of the arcade, except that they have all the music out of place. It feels like the Sega CD version is an upgraded Genesis version, which can somewhat compete with the SNES version. It has a slight edge, but the sounds (especially during the win screen and fatality screen) are annoying and out of place. Probe dropped the ball here.

I gotta disagree with you there, did you play the SNES version, & compare it to the other 3(Arcade/Genesis/CD)? Or did you just dismiss it bc they took the blood out? That's what most people did, and it's just not right, because that SNES version played super smooth and felt by far the closest to the arcade. I wasn't happy about the blood either, but I got to give credit where it's due. You can even tell in this video that the Sega CD version just lags, delayed reactions, like you uppercut somebody and performed a full motion before they even react and start flying. And that Genesis version that everybody is so high on, always sucked. So what it had the blood, it still had all the typical really bad downgrades that you got with most genesis ports. But for the life of me I can't figure out why the Sega CD version scores like a 6 out of 10 everywhere and the Genesis version scores an 8 out of 10. The Sega CD version is obviously better.

Is impossible to notice this since this guy doesnt know how to play the game, but the SNES version has a big lack of combos. The characters fall dawn too fast after a jump kick, cause that, the only way to create a combo when the enemy is standing up is when they are on a corner. The SEGA CD version doesnt have that problem. I dont know about others, but for me a FIGHTING GAME whitout a good gameplay in combos is something I cant pass. Graphics, colors, even a better CD sound is irrelevant if something like combos is lacking. And the same happened in MK2 at SNES, but in that case the longer and best combos at the corner are lacking; and the 32x version was the only one that could handle them (not even Genesis or SNES)... I said aestetics doesnt matter if the most important in a fighting game is lacking: Gameplay and Combos.

We'd go home after school to play it on the snes and at a friends house we'd play it on their genesis. Both were great at the time because to most people back then it was more about the fun of the game.
Its something only people back then could understand because it was a time when perfectly made ports weren't exactly necessary nor thought of by the consumers and it was more about the fun in them.
People today cant understand this because its only something that people back then lived with.
Who knows who's opinion is greater, those who grew up with the games or those that look at it years after its original release when its not as popular anymore and are more comfortable with newer releases of a variety of games.
I consider anyone that didnt grow up with certain games opinion's to be irrelevant most of the time because its just something that you had to have experienced along the way as gaming enhanced through time.
Thats just me though and how it was back then around me.

Ja o Snes, as cores tem uma cooposição de melhor opção pra si escolher, mas não quer dizer que o do Snes tem mais gráfico, do Snes é mais realista, mais gráfico é do Sega Cd. The SNES beautiful graphics and sound but no blood and unforgivable input lag. The SEGA CD improved graphics over the GEN version ex: having extra details like Sub-Zero's proper fighting stance and more detail touches in The Pit stage to name but two and Arcade accurate sound, but suffers from unforgivable load times. It’s like comparing the Aladdin games. The Genesis version clearly looks better. But, it’s not a one for one because it was done by 2 different developers.
Ultimate MK is the one where Sega really brought it. More stages. Less slowdown. And all of Shag Tsung’s morphs. SNES looks and sounds better. But, the difference is not as drastic on this entry because they were both done by Williams.
So SNES wins on MK2 and MK3. Genesis wins on MK1 and Ultimate MK. But to me SNES all the way cause that’s what I grew up on.

That being said, while the inclusion of the arcade soundtrack along with better sound and voice effects would have been awesome, they didn't even try to make it accurate as every single track seems to play on the wrong level! RowJoe47 I own both versions. The Sega CD has everything the arcade version has. Just longer loading times. Sega did this port good.

When I look at snes version vs arcade version snes just looks bland. Mega drive/genesis or sega mega cd/ sega cd version looks more like arcade.

Gameplay wise Sega cd version is alot better. Snes wins visually in some aspects.

I believe Nintendo looks better but the gameplay on Sega was better. More like the arcade. The jumping on the SNES was annoying because you'd go to jump kick them and they'd walk fast and be in your face. While with arcade and Sega it was a slower process so you could land more jump kicks.

Yes, Sega CD had CD audio which sounds great, but every single stage has the wrong music. I don't know how they managed to fuck that up.

Sega cd is a way better version

I say it's better than both the Genesis AND the SNES versions. The graphics are not the best but the music is much better than both versions.

It isn't. I actually had the SNES, Genesis, and Sega CD versions of the game at one time. The Sega CD version was ruined by the load times, especially when you fought Shang Tsung. The one thing that version had going for it was a kickass soundtrack.

Jon-Erich Smith It's my opinion, dude. That's what it means to type "I say". I never even fought Shang Tsung.

If you ever get a chance to, you'll see what I'm talking about. Every time he transforms into another character, the game comes to a near stop. You'd think the CD was skipping or some but it wasn't. It's actually kind of neat in a way because you get to see the individual frames of animation that goes into his transformation but it makes the fight almost unplayable. Then there's the endurance matches. While not as bad as Shang Tsung, when you defeat one fighter, the game has to load the next fighter. It takes you out of the moment. I don't know if the Sega CD version was a rushed port or if that system couldn't handle that game for whatever reason.

Jon-Erich Smith I'm probably not going to play any of the versions. They've aged pretty badly.

the only thing that Sega had that Nintendo didn't was BLOOD.

The SNES is clearly superior, despite no blood.
