These were the days. I remember hearing about the release date for genesis and being so excited. Not just for this one, but for the first 2 as well. I remember telling my dad about the first one coming out for the genesis and begging him to get it for me when it came out. He told me that since there’s still time before it’s released, to save my money and buy it myself. That’s exactly what I did, and he made me do the same for mk2 and mk3 when they came out for the genesis. I was just 13 when mk1 came out on the consoles. Man I would love to go back and relive that! Adulting sucks!

The early and mid 90's were full with great memories! The 16bit era was the best and most interesting time in video gaming history, I'm glad that I whitnessed it when I was a teenager. Now, I get 40 years old and SNES and Megadrive are still my favourite systems!
Yes I agree both of them are identical. Part one was better on Sega part two is better on superintendent of part three was better on either. And ultimate was better on Siegen
It was fun to compare games of the 16bit era graphics, music, characters, gameplay, colors were all very different. Today people just compare the few frame rate differences lol

Temos que levar em consideração que o megadrive foi lançado 2 anos antes do SNES, a versão de SNES tinha obrigação de ser melhor em termos de gráficos, cor e som. E também parabenizar os caras que fizeram o port para o console da sega, que com todas as limitações na paleta de cores fizeram um trabalho impecável, gosto das duas versões e cada uma tem suas peculiaridades.
A Probe fez as versoes de Mk do Mega, e ficaram a desejar, perdendo bastante para o Snes, principalmente MK2. Quando a Willians tomou conta para a versao do Mega, dessa vez o Mega, ate o som que o forte do Snes ta melhor do Mega.
Quando joguei a versão do arcade (no lançamento) imaginei que o port do Mega seria mais capado ainda, já que o MK2 ficou uma bosta. Me surpreendeu a qualidade, perde por muito pouco pra do SNES que tinha um hardware superior.
Neste caso do MK3 acho que cada um puxa a sardinha mesmo querendo ser imparcial para o console que jogou na infância, ao meu ver os gráficos do S.Nes são superiores mas o áudio e fluência do jogo do Mega Drive muito melhores. Tive um mega drive e joguei muito nele. Portanto minha opinião não conta já citando o motivo da cerne da questão anteriormente citado. Para ser justo dou um empate entre ambos excelentes jogos que tivemos a chance de joga-los nos anos 90.
For the snes, it always bugged me how the names are below the life bar and the combo/damage notification is blurry looking. But for the first MK the genesis version, yes it had the blood but graphics/sound wise wasn't a thing like the arcade while the SNES version was an amazing port.
If you look at both, they are great ports. I like how Sculptured knew that the MD couldn't do the arcades music, so they made an entirely new soundtrack using the strengths of the YM2612. What came out of it was some truly impressive stuff. Resolution: Sega Color: SNES Music: Sega Sound effects: Draw (like muffled or scratchy?) Gameplay: Sega by a slight edge (that godly 6 button controller) Do you notice any of these things when playing with your friends? Not at all. Both are great fun.

No way the genesis 6 button controller is better than the snes controller. It’s still a good controller but the buttons are kind of stiff and I prefer the layout of the snes controller better. The sega Saturn did a much better with the genesis 6 button controller layout by making the controller more comfortable on your hands, the buttons were more responsive and of course the addition of the r and l button (of course I’m talking about the model 2 Saturn controller or the Japanese Saturn controller whichever you know it by).

If they really wanted to do the sound justice for these versions, they needed to use 40 meg carts instead of 32 if that was possible. Would've been plenty more expensive, but the games would've been better with less compressed sound & would've had the graveyard background too
I had MK3 on SNES my friend had it on Genesis. I used to love playing it on Genesis even though SNES was graphically better. Maybe since I didn't own the Genesis version it made me want to play it. I dunno 😠
That's because sound and gameplay are way better on genesis. I have both games and I would reach for the genesis first. It doesn't show In the video but playing the snes isn't as smooth as genesis that maybe because the genesis has a faster processor.
@@orthoking2722 There are a few missing songs and stages on the SNES too. Some of the sounds and music are better on SNES some are better on Genesis, but missing content really seal the deal.
@@rockofloveusa agreed I had both. I liked the mega drives darker colours to match the theme and felt quicker and smoother but both versions were still awesome.
That's why sega genesis is better because it has its own style not trying to copy the arcade while the super nintendo copies and still messed up everything
MK 3 foi meu primeiro jogo lá nos anos 90 quando ganhei meu Mega Drive. Sempre achei a versão de Mega melhor porque tinha um som melhor, achava maior tosco o som do jogo no SNES quando ia jogar na casa dos amigos. O controle do Mega sempre foi melhor pra combar nos jogos de luta também.
For arcade accuracy (and not jumping to the ps version), I'd go with the snes version. Less crunchy and some minor features are in there (like shao kahn actually doing his death scream instead of his hurt grunt).

Gameplay wise, the genesis is the most arcade accurate gameplay wise Outside of the Saturn version, The Genesis version plays better than the PlayStation version, not to mention that the controller button layout matches the arcade one, so if you wanted to practice the arcade game at home, the best one was the Genesis version.
@@andrewisjesus actually the SNES Version is closer to the arcade sound wise and music wise and graphic wise. The SNES has those flying pteradactyls in the background on that one stage with the spikes on the roof. Genesis doesn't.
The TMS34010 cpu used in the arcade versions of midway/Williams games starting with Narc was a 32 bit processor and able to do 3d on the fly at 640x480i, infact most of those cabs ran at crazy high resolutions for the time of 511x399. Mk3 released in 95 Narc in 88 imagine how much that Narc cab cost at release....

Tenho os dois games nos consoles e hoje joguei bastante os dois. Excelentes ports com diferenças mínimas. Por muito pouco, o Snes fica com a melhor versão.
Genesis color pallette dosnt look so bad as long as the correct dithering such as what composite video would produce is provided, I know of a few techniques to replicate that type of display but alot sharper
The one I’ve played for the first time was the PlayStation One, then PC, then MK3 Ultimate on Sega Saturn and now in 2017 the one I play is the PS3’s included in the MK collection! Not the best 2D MK but still fun! A thing that I’ve found is that in all these editions the one with THE BEST music audio quality is still the PSone!
Snes has better colours and higher quality sound, but the sound is dull or muffled. I played the heck out of the mega drive version had the 6 button controller as well. I like how they handled it on a 3 button controller though. Once you got hang of it it wasn't so bad it made sense. A = low punch A+B = high punch C = low kick B +C = high kick Or something to that effect. It has been over 20 years since I played it.

Sega uses is making use of dithering on some of their graphic, and that is going to look better on a CRT! Very close ports on consoles that were outclassed by the next generation when these games were released. It's amazing so much was stuffed onto one cart for both systems.
the laugh and music is sooo loud and inspiring on the genesis especially the cathedral level better visuals on the snes, but a bit faster on the genesis the both are great hard to say a winner, mk 1 genesis, mk2 snes, mk3 draw, and ultimate mk3 genesis because 4 more levels!!
Yeah, I actually owned the snes version of Ultimate mk3 and after the first hour of playing it, something felt akward, I had no clue what was it. The next day I got to play it only then I realised that the game was shuffleing the same 4 stages over and over again with throwing in additionally the pit and the pier stage from time to time. Then it hit me, is it possible my game is glitching and does not load the rest of the levels the Arcade had? Only years later to find out it actually never had the rest of the stages lije the sega version had. Maaaan It was sooooooo disapointing.
hard to tell on these 2 but the only thing I noticed is on the fatalities, SNES has bones coming out when sub zero splits them in half and the MD doesn't. I don't no if the arcade has the same as SNES or not.

I'm not sure what you mean about full image of fighters but the letterboxing above and below the snes scene has made the space inside the health bar too small to fit the text inside it to be legible on a low quality small crt tv set.
You can barely see the difference that the higher resolution makes. In the MKII they were quite noticeable, but here it's just a small thing. Plus, look at that Soul Chamber penumbra! It's just awful.
Genesis did an excellent job this time around. Very identical ports. I don’t think I have any complaints either way as the difference between the two is nothing major.
KGRAMR Yeah, google it and you'll see. There's some art assets which emerged from that failed conversion but sadly that's not of very much use to actually check what could have been the game on that system.

Brings me back to the 90s...as someone who grew up on MK since MK started and played both versions daily I can safely say the SNES was superior to the Sega version overall.

The genesis version also seems to use more voice samplings "eg. Sheeva's screams" which the SNES lacks. Plus the scaling of the text seems better. Only thing that sucks is the "Fatality" thing doesn't animate right. By far the best port of MK for the Genesis. UMK3 sucked for both consoles.
I prefer the SNES version cause the overall graphics and sound are a little better, and the SNES controller handles the Block/Run controls better. However, the Genesis version still impresses the hell out of me. If there was a 32X or Sega CD version, it would have been the definitive version of that console generation.
Mk3 had such a mystique and polish to it. Maybe cause it was the last of the digitized grahics MK other than UMK3. There may been many better MK games later on. But I've never been able to get the same feeling of graphical and presentation wowness that I got from playing a MK game as MK3. Maybe in MK9 when you start the story mode with Johnny Cage and beat Reptile in the first round. Cage looks at a fallen Reptile and says Come on. That was pretty dope too. That was mind blasting. Let me that MK was back.
True the SNES probably wins it but having Sculptured Software do the SEGA conversion made all the difference after having PROBE Software do the previous 2 SEGA ports! It was a really big deal for me back in 1995 having digitised voice samples via the SEGA port of MK 3 for the first time after not having that at all via the previous versions. While I loved MK3, I remember being just slightly not as impressed with either port after playing Killer Instinct though but that's a different story.
What's the point of the SNES version being better in graphics if the gameplay against the machine is practically unplayable. The sequence is always as follows: the first opponent is easy, then in the next fight it's impossible to win. It's like the game changes from very easy to very hard by itself. Then you obviously lose, take the continue and immediately the game is super easy again. And so it goes like this until the end, which in my opinion makes the game completely unbalanced and broken in gameplay. The only good thing about this rubbish is playing against someone in versus mode.
eu achei que o super nintendo foi melhor explorado ambientação som tudo na minha opinião ficou melhor! não que eu seja fã boy da nintendo pois tive os 2 consoles e aproveitei ambos na mesma intensidade mas é normal que um seja melhor que outro em algum aspecto senão não haveria uma concorrência ferrenha e leal entre as 2 fabricantes na época.
A do SNES é pouca coisa melhor. O trabalho feito no mega drive é impressionante. Eu gosto mais dos efeitos sonoros do mega. Mas o narrador é melhor no SNES. Apesar do som do SNES ser melhor acho q as músicas combinam mais com o chip sonoro do mega. E no mega é melhor porque jogo de luta se joga com controle de 6 botões e não com botões de ombro como no snes. Ótimo trabalho. Parabéns.
Both were great options over owning an arcade machine at the time. I'd still take the SNES version of MK2&3 over the Genesis one though (better audio and slightly cleaner graphical presentation). I still play both versions of the original (Sega CD and SNES) for the same reasons and even though the SNES version had the blood replaced with sweat, the game itself was a FAR smoother experience.

Mas requer adaptação. O do SNES é ótimo . Mas machuca os dedos a longo prazo. Questão de gosto. Gosto do joystick do Saturn tb. E mais ainda do 3d pad do Saturn.
I have Mortal Kombat and Ultimate MK3 for both the Genesis and SNES, and I have to admit that Sega really upped the ante for these games. In my opinion, they're pretty much neck and neck, and I'm happy to play them on either consoles.
The genesis games looks better here in most cases aside from color. Also you know the Megadrive was a full 2 years older than the snes. So I would hope so.

I think the 6 buttons layout of the genesis joystick made the difference for Mortal Kombat, with graphics, vfx and sound aside.

Actually it was in UMK3 that Snes was missing stages and songs.

part 1 and 2 had different companies porting them, this one was the same company porting for the two systems that is why it is more close.

For arcade accuracy (and not jumping to the ps version), I'd go with the snes version. Less crunchy and some minor features are in there (like shao kahn actually doing his death scream instead of his hurt grunt).

Outside of the Saturn version, The Genesis version plays better than the PlayStation version, not to mention that the controller button layout matches the arcade one, so if you wanted to practice the arcade game at home, the best one was the Genesis version.

@@andrewisjesus actually the SNES Version is closer to the arcade sound wise and music wise and graphic wise. The SNES has those flying pteradactyls in the background on that one stage with the spikes on the roof. Genesis doesn't.

It always irked me on any system how they would play the wrong bgm on the wrong stage.
How hard is it?
The TMS34010 cpu used in the arcade versions of midway/Williams games starting with Narc was a 32 bit processor and able to do 3d on the fly at 640x480i, infact most of those cabs ran at crazy high resolutions for the time of 511x399.
Mk3 released in 95 Narc in 88 imagine how much that Narc cab cost at release....

That Texas Instruments arcade system was actually low cost, low chip count even when brand new. It was just an insane beast.

Tenho os dois games nos consoles e hoje joguei bastante os dois. Excelentes ports com diferenças mínimas. Por muito pouco, o Snes fica com a melhor versão.
Se a versao de snes é 10 a de mega é 9.9

Genesis color pallette dosnt look so bad as long as the correct dithering such as what composite video would produce is provided, I know of a few techniques to replicate that type of display but alot sharper

Not sure why, that sound effect always reminded me of this old Jack Frost claymation cartoon I used to watch as a kid lol.
The one I’ve played for the first time was the PlayStation One, then PC, then MK3 Ultimate on Sega Saturn and now in 2017 the one I play is the PS3’s included in the MK collection! Not the best 2D MK but still fun! A thing that I’ve found is that in all these editions the one with THE BEST music audio quality is still the PSone!

I played the heck out of the mega drive version had the 6 button controller as well. I like how they handled it on a 3 button controller though. Once you got hang of it it wasn't so bad it made sense.

Ambas versiones son excelentes, aquí no hay tanta diferencia porque Sculptured Software adaptó ambas, en los MK1 y MK2 fueron diferentes las que hicieron las versiones de SNES y SEGA

Not gonna lie, I was rootimg for Jean Luc Picard vs Sub-Zero.
Sega uses is making use of dithering on some of their graphic, and that is going to look better on a CRT! Very close ports on consoles that were outclassed by the next generation when these games were released. It's amazing so much was stuffed onto one cart for both systems.
Let me tell you that THE FUCK IT DID. Genesis's MK 3 port was terrible. From sound to graphics, Sega didn't what Nintendoes.

the laugh and music is sooo loud and inspiring on the genesis especially the cathedral level better visuals on the snes, but a bit faster on the genesis the both are great hard to say a winner, mk 1 genesis, mk2 snes, mk3 draw, and ultimate mk3 genesis because 4 more levels!!

Umk3 genesis too because you can actually multiplayer it without slowdowns or lock the console. Almost impossible to play on snes after some matches.
Yeah, I actually owned the snes version of Ultimate mk3 and after the first hour of playing it, something felt akward, I had no clue what was it. The next day I got to play it only then I realised that the game was shuffleing the same 4 stages over and over again with throwing in additionally the pit and the pier stage from time to time. Then it hit me, is it possible my game is glitching and does not load the rest of the levels the Arcade had? Only years later to find out it actually never had the rest of the stages lije the sega version had. Maaaan It was sooooooo disapointing.

hard to tell on these 2 but the only thing I noticed is on the fatalities, SNES has bones coming out when sub zero splits them in half and the MD doesn't. I don't no if the arcade has the same as SNES or not.
The gameplay was better with the Genesis controller. Very fluid ! Would love to play the PS1 port with a genesis like controller.

I'm not sure what you mean about full image of fighters but the letterboxing above and below the snes scene has made the space inside the health bar too small to fit the text inside it to be legible on a low quality small crt tv set.
On the genesis version, the bones sound like someone have thrown dices.
Both are fine, although if I have to choose one I choose the SNES version because of the extra colours.
You can barely see the difference that the higher resolution makes. In the MKII they were quite noticeable, but here it's just a small thing. Plus, look at that Soul Chamber penumbra! It's just awful.
The backgrounds look much clearer on the SNES version, but the Genesis version is still really good
Genesis did an excellent job this time around. Very identical ports. I don’t think I have any complaints either way as the difference between the two is nothing major.

KGRAMR Yeah, google it and you'll see. There's some art assets which emerged from that failed conversion but sadly that's not of very much use to actually check what could have been the game on that system.

O som da versão do console da Sega é terrível, mas o processador dele e mais rápido que o da Nintendo. Todavia o super nes ganha em gráficos e som, embora o port do mega drive não seja de um todo ruim, tendo em vista suas limitações.

Brings me back to the 90s...as someone who grew up on MK since MK started and played both versions daily I can safely say the SNES was superior to the Sega version overall.

SNES wins in colour reproduction and sound quality. The difference isn't as big graphically, but in sound, the SNES port does much better.

The genesis version also seems to use more voice samplings "eg. Sheeva's screams" which the SNES lacks. Plus the scaling of the text seems better. Only thing that sucks is the "Fatality" thing doesn't animate right. By far the best port of MK for the Genesis. UMK3 sucked for both consoles.
Gonna have to side with the Snes version on this one.
I prefer the SNES version cause the overall graphics and sound are a little better, and the SNES controller handles the Block/Run controls better. However, the Genesis version still impresses the hell out of me. If there was a 32X or Sega CD version, it would have been the definitive version of that console generation.
Indeed, the shoulder buttons are very nice because our thumb is free to use the other buttons, it's a huge gameplay improvement.
Mk3 had such a mystique and polish to it. Maybe cause it was the last of the digitized grahics MK other than UMK3. There may been many better MK games later on. But I've never been able to get the same feeling of graphical and presentation wowness that I got from playing a MK game as MK3. Maybe in MK9 when you start the story mode with Johnny Cage and beat Reptile in the first round. Cage looks at a fallen Reptile and says Come on. That was pretty dope too. That was mind blasting. Let me that MK was back.

True the SNES probably wins it but having Sculptured Software do the SEGA conversion made all the difference after having PROBE Software do the previous 2 SEGA ports! It was a really big deal for me back in 1995 having digitised voice samples via the SEGA port of MK 3 for the first time after not having that at all via the previous versions. While I loved MK3, I remember being just slightly not as impressed with either port after playing Killer Instinct though but that's a different story.
What's the point of the SNES version being better in graphics if the gameplay against the machine is practically unplayable. The sequence is always as follows: the first opponent is easy, then in the next fight it's impossible to win. It's like the game changes from very easy to very hard by itself. Then you obviously lose, take the continue and immediately the game is super easy again. And so it goes like this until the end, which in my opinion makes the game completely unbalanced and broken in gameplay. The only good thing about this rubbish is playing against someone in versus mode.
eu achei que o super nintendo foi melhor explorado ambientação som tudo na minha opinião ficou melhor! não que eu seja fã boy da nintendo pois tive os 2 consoles e aproveitei ambos na mesma intensidade mas é normal que um seja melhor que outro em algum aspecto senão não haveria uma concorrência ferrenha e leal entre as 2 fabricantes na época.
A do SNES é pouca coisa melhor. O trabalho feito no mega drive é impressionante. Eu gosto mais dos efeitos sonoros do mega. Mas o narrador é melhor no SNES. Apesar do som do SNES ser melhor acho q as músicas combinam mais com o chip sonoro do mega. E no mega é melhor porque jogo de luta se joga com controle de 6 botões e não com botões de ombro como no snes. Ótimo trabalho. Parabéns.
Both were great options over owning an arcade machine at the time. I'd still take the SNES version of MK2&3 over the Genesis one though (better audio and slightly cleaner graphical presentation).
I still play both versions of the original (Sega CD and SNES) for the same reasons and even though the SNES version had the blood replaced with sweat, the game itself was a FAR smoother experience.
Graficamente o SNes leva, mas em jogabilidade o Genesis é muito melhor.
Nunca vou esquecer esse combo do Sub-Zero.

O fato é que o joystick do mega dispõe de 2 carreiras de 3.
É muito bom sim.
Mas requer adaptação.

I have Mortal Kombat and Ultimate MK3 for both the Genesis and SNES, and I have to admit that Sega really upped the ante for these games. In my opinion, they're pretty much neck and neck, and I'm happy to play them on either consoles.

The one major thing I can add is the SNES port's character movement felt a bit faster and smoother than the Genesis'.
Thing is i loved the Sega Megadrive but the Snes clearly had more power i mean you can tell just by the graphics.
The genesis games looks better here in most cases aside from color. Also you know the Megadrive was a full 2 years older than the snes. So I would hope so.
