Mount Washington, home of the world's worst weather, sits at 6,288 feet making it the tallest mountain in the northeastern US. Follow me as I hike to the summit from the Ammonoosuc Ravine trailhead! The trail is approximately 5.2 miles one-way with a 4,186' elevation gain.
**Do yourself a favor and arrive early if you plan to hike it! It takes 5 hours and 10 minutes on average to reach the summit. You need to allot enough time to ascend and descend the mountain on foot if you are trying to complete the NH 48 AKA the 4,000-Footer Challenge!**

People should know you cannot buy a ticket for the Cog at the summit. If you’re lucky enough, the conductor will let you on the train and you can buy a ticket at the bottom. Also bears to mention that if you park at the Ravine/Jewell trailhead and end up taking the autoroad back down, it’s about a 1 hour car ride to get back to the trailhead parking. Do not do this if you are not prepared and make sure you have plenty of time to find your way down in case you end up hiking back. The Forest is thick and it will be very dark if you don’t make it before sunset.

You can buy tickets at the summit in-person. That's exactly what I did and it even states so on the COG Railway website...

Wow you just got a bluebird day up there. So awesome! My wife and I are gonna do this trail, we both have never summited Washington before, is this fairly dog friendly? I’ve heard the rocks can be tough on dogs paws but our lab seems to have very little issues with rocky sections.

That's a good question. I think portions of the alpine section would be tricky but I think it depends on your dog. I can see why others would say it would be hard on their paws. There were sections that seemed like there was nothing but shale on the ground. I would feel okay taking a lab up there but I wouldn't take a smaller dog, like my Frenchie. We actually have little hiking booties for our dog. It might be worth bringing some for your lab to wear during those sections of the trail.

Thank you! I did not do Ammonoosuc although people recommend the Ammo-Jewell loop to go up/down. As you saw, I was a one-way passenger! 😄 Hope you enjoy the hike though.

Jewell is documented as the easiest trail to the summit
