    The Mount Washington Auto Road an 8 mile toll road that extends from New Hampshire Route 16 in Pinkham Notch to the summit of Mount Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The road climbs 4,618 feet from an altitude of 1,527 feet at the bottom to 6,145 feet at the top, an average gradient of 11.6%. The road was completed and opened to the public in 1861. Due to its remarkable location, weather, and history, the Mount Washington Auto Road is unlike any other driving experience in the Eastern United States. A trip on Mount Washington Auto Road is a one-of-a-kind experience offering ever-changing weather extremes, panoramic views and the opportunity to pass through four distinct climate zones as you climb to the highest peak in the Northeast. This video is one complete roundtrip of the scenic journey.

    Tremendous! As a great fan of Mt
    Washington I would be a scared but ecstatic passenger but could never be the driver. Loved every second of being a passenger in your auto. It was like a glimpse, sneak preview of heaven
    Now can we please take the cable car and descend to the Mt, Washington Hotel?
    Perhaps share a fine whiskey on the veranda...
    Thank you for a remarkable and quite enticing video journey.

      It's funny you should say that because I feel the opposite. I would lose a few years off of my life being the passenger on such a climb, but it was actually fun when I drove up myself. It's still adrenaline and excitement one way or another, but the difference is that when you're the driver, you get a kick out of it and you're all smiles, whereas as a passenger you're holding on tight to the door handle and tensing up all your muscles lol Did this thing 3 years ago, in 2017. Would love to get back there to climb the mountain on foot, which I didn't do last time because of the stormy weather (which the locals say is the norm for most days). But yeah, I'd love to do the hike up the mountain and also take the cog train. Maybe next year, when this coronahoax planneddemic is over (let's see if my comment survives on youtube for what I just said lol).

    Me, my boyfriend, and a friend of ours hiked Mt Washington this past September. Going up was AMAZING, but going down was terrifying bc a rain storm passed through and those boulder fields SUCK when they're wet. The whole trek took about 11 hours up and down (we stopped at the hut for a while) and despite the fear of death going down it was hands down the most amazing experience ever. Just watch out for the giant gorge. Like...don't even look at it roflol

      Being there and doing it is FAR worse than watching the video. The magnitude of the surrounding mountains make you feel like a tiny little ant on the side of Mount Washington. You feel so small and insignificant, like the sky could crush you at any moment. While it was beautiful at the top, it was not worth the terror of going up and down. I will NEVER do it again.

In the middle of way the weather changed, and was a dense fog , visibility around 4-5 feet. My speed was very low . I was very grateful for the line in the middle of the road which showed me where to go. It was very foggy at the peak, windy. 2 hours later it was the clearest sky you can imagine. Practically I saw the road on the way down. It was very stressful drive up.

    When I was a kid, the first time up Mt. Wash was in my dad's car and we didn't make it up as the car overheated. Fortunate for us, there was a very small stream next to the road and my dad found a Budweiser can..lol. Put enough water in to get us down. The next year, we took the Mount Washington Van to go up. We eventually made it and had to wait nearly an hour and half for the clouds to move out. After that the views were stunning. The ride down was a little tricky at the gravel section as some people thought I had right of way. Overall it was a something that I never experienced.

    Just came back from vacation, did it two up on our Victory Cross Country, Our trip much different than video, very cloudy that day and chances of rain thru out the day. So cloudy on our trip up could see only 100-125 feet in front of us. A lot of drivers did not understand staying on their side! Tried to maintain 20MPH up so could use 2nd gear, but not always possible. ( Remember camera in video is parallel to road so the steepness can not be seen) the grade averages 11% - per Mt. Washington info). Hit near solid clouds by 4 mile mark, brief openings kept ya on your toes, cause now you could see beyond the road edges. A few vehicles were at the turn offs waiting to turn back. We got to the top ( that's when I told Rebecca that the last 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile I could only see 30-40 feet in front of the tire, shield on helmet fogged up, so I open it. The mist of the fog now covered my glasses and I could not get them off while driving. The wife who has bungee jumped many times was not a fan of the ride that day. We sat a bit then walked around the top.Then it started to rain, quit heavy. We decided it would be safer if she road down in a vehicle, less weight for me and gravity to handle, especially on the dirt section, which is a bit over a mile long. Went down with no glasses and an open shield so I could at least see far enough to operate the bike. The dirt section section was as bad almost as ice, kind of a clay like surface. Kept the bike in first gear the whole time which kept the speed to 15 mph, as a result had to use almost no brakes, engine braking did most of the work. Wet clay roads, brakes ( front and/or rear) with only two wheels not a great plan. We both got down. Had no time to be scared as concentration on what I was doing was enough to keep me busy. Apparently vehicles coming up also had vision trouble as they sometimes felt they needed my side of the road. After being down,and as bad I thought it was, I am looking forward to doing it again, but will pick a clear day like this video. Jerry & Rebecca Horn

    We went up there so many time in the past by car, and what a difference! The road is so much safer than how I remember it. It is unbelievable since the road wasn't paved back then and was much narrower. The very last time we went was by cog. There we were told by the conductor that we were lucky to have such a clear day as there are only a handful of clear days. So, we could see forever once on the top of the mountain.

    I drove it maybe 3-4 years ago and will never do it again. It would be fine if you were the only one on the road but there are some gravel sections and if you have to pass a wide vehicle on the descent it can be scary. My mum and dad were in the back seat for the drive... she was silent the whole time, praying and he was swearing his head off that they even open the road to the public! Funny in retrospect ;)

      I agree, but I'd do it again. The parts that aren't paved are a little scary and there are parts of the road that if you look outside the window, there's not much road between the door and the cliffs.

    This was an amazing day. LINES ON THE ROAD??? WOW!!!
    I drove up to the summit today. There were lines on the road in a very few places.
    I wish there were lines on the road in as many places as shown on this video!
    I have driven on many mountain roads in California.
    This road up to the summit of Mt. Washington was the most terrifying road I have ever driven! Especially the dirt-road section of it.
    In California, this road would be much wider, and it would have guardrails! WTF is wrong with NH? Live free AND DIE!!!

    Been up and down on a motorcycle as a passenger. Believe it or not going up was much scarier than coming down.
    You should have waited for the Cog. Onetime while up there a Rainbow appeared out of the side of the mountain. So close I could almost touch it. So awesome!

    What's crazy is the fact that I drove through the entire state of NH 4x back when I lived in the US and never heard about Mt. Washington until I moved to Europe. Sucks. Now I have to get on a plane, etc. (ugh) to do this trip myself. But we got roads over here just as dangerous as that, where one tiny false move and it's instant, permanent, irreversible, undeniable DEATH.

    I entered the race to the clouds in 1991. It was the 130th race. The first race was 1861. They raced horses before the automobile was invented. I entered in a vintage race car and was not competing. It was an exhibition class. You needed a special license to compete. It was a scary ride. Especially coming back down. That was the only time I ever went up there. There was no toll for the race cars. The people who work at the weather observatory call it the rock pile. You can see why.

  • @joereale9785
    @joereale9785 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I did that just a few days ago. Not as scary as some people make it seem but there are times where you REALLY get concerned. I had the pleasure of driving on the dirt part while a cloud was passing over the mountain. The visibility was really poor but I made it.
    Just do as they say, keep calm and you'll do fine.

      Or I might not be. I doubt I'd ever make it out west. I really wasn't worried even in the cloud. I've driven through some pretty Lake Effect snow events here in Syracuse, NY. It still was an experience and I'm glad I did it.

    Thank you for this beautiful video! Is there a speed limit for when you are driving? The road seems quite unprotected, were the cars around you driving fast?

    • @hoosiertim
      @hoosiertim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I believe the speed limit was 25mph. I didn't encounter any people driving way too fast on my trip. True, there are no guard rails. But the road is in good shape and there is enough room to get by the oncoming traffic without scraping the paint. Don't be intimidated to drive faster than what makes you comfortable. No one is on this road because they are in a hurry to get some place. Take your time and enjoy the view.

    • @TheBostonLass
      @TheBostonLass 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The road is unprotected because Mt. Washington has the world's worst weather. They have huge chains to hold down the huts for the hikers and I think the top wind speed that was recorded was 230 mph at the ummit.

    very nice video, and I'm definitely going there in August 2018 from Montreal. It is so terrifying and satisfying driving.
