    Wow! bless your heart Warren, thank you so much for all your videos that are so informative to us home studio guys.
    We have been maligned to a degree about us not being professional or how we are destroying the big studio business. To be fair some of the criticism is earned since some of us home studio guys do bad recording and think its about the gear too much when in fact great recording basics like the ones you teach us can greatly enhance our recordings.
    Your wisdom is very much appreciated and I have learned so many techniques that have enhanced my recordings.
    Thank you Mr. Huart, you are such an inspiration.

      Hi AdonisAiolos thanks ever so much for your kind words, I really appreciate it! I am a home studio guy!! I started with 2 cassette players, moved to 4 track cassette, then basic cheap reel to reel, ADATS, then Pro Tools. I never worked in a studio, did it all on my own! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

      She just proved acoustic treatment is way over rated. Don't get me wrong, it is needed in a lot of cases. But when engineers says you can't mix with out it, they are just bias for the acoustic companies.

      Never thought I'd see an acoustic treatment rejector. I hope no one listens to this.

    What a great interview ! Linda is quite the guitar player and she has great tone too. I love that her recording setup is actually pretty simple and could be considered affordable for most aspiring producers. You could even go as far as designing a recording system inspired by hers that would cost less and still allow you to achieve great results by focusing on the bare essential... Loved the Ikea type studio comment too, as I find that studios that are too shiny, clean and glossy less than inspiring to work in too... It has to have a mood to it. In short, thanks for the interview. I discovered a great artist thanks to you. :)

    I just ran across an interview you did with Maia Sharp to promote the release for The Dash Between The Dates. I was blown away by Maia this past November and bought her cd's. Have to say on my first listen, the production quality most impressive. The challenge bring it all across to a listener with that clarity was exceeded. Bravo Linda your studio rocks, thanks for helping make one of my new all time favorite cd's. I'll be sure to follow the tunes you kick out from now on.

    I love the rundown, I hope you do follow up with more from Linda. Monty Montgomery used two SWR tube buffers for a while on his live rig, one for the guitar pedals and one for vocals, they really make a difference in tonal quality.

    A note for Lynda. The Black box apparently works best if you plug your guitar into it as the first part of your chain, as you do. However, in the case of distortion or fuzz boxes, it is suggested that they and only distortion type boxes go first in the chain. All others (delays reverbes) go after. It might be interesting to try. Great show Warren and Lynda

      Hi Jacke. :>) Yes, with Fuzz pedals you'll want to adjust their placement - many of them don't work well with buffers. I rarely use a fuzz, and when I do it's strapped to a loop off the chain so no worries. Linda.

    I’m trying to learn how to record guitar, vocals, possibly harp and second vocals. Much of this is way over my head, but so interesting. I just got an audio interface and am looking at surface controllers, amazed to see that Linda is using a trackball instead. I use a Wacom tablet for photoshop, and wonder if it could also be used as a controller for a DAW.

      Hi earth thanks for the comment. As I was saying above most mixing rooms are not flat at all, at least not overly. My room where I mixed the last Aerosmith album, the latest Black Veil Brides DVD/BluRay etc does;t have a huge amount of treatment, but it does fantastic where I sit between the speakers and is a great environment to sit and work in for long periods of time. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    • @bloodlord1989
      @bloodlord1989 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      earth It's not misleading because that has nothing to do with recording (Which is the subject),but only post production. Good head phones also eliminates a problem with a room not treated.

    Hi Warren, I was super surprised to hear that you strap pultecs across your master buss. Considering inductor style eq changes phase relationships I would have thought you might have gone for maag audio eq4 or their older models the nightpro eq. ect. Nonetheless your mixes sound amazing...showing that whatever it takes to get there right? This series is amazing!! so much fun!

    Cannot tell you how great your vids are. It's like a master class. I've learned so much. And these where you visit others setups and their gear and just being a fly in the wall of the conversations is really awesome.
    One question. What is summing?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi funkyboss007 thanks for the kind words! Summing when you take two or more tracks and send them to the same output, does that make sense? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    • @emilywheeler3573
      @emilywheeler3573 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That reminds me of when I used to bounce multiple tracks down to a single track on my old four track. I know it's not the same but is that the right concept?
      But doesn't that mean you have one eq and level etc to mix all those summed channels with? I guess I'm not sure why you would use summing.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Emily Wheeler great question! It's if you have multiple sounds that create one sound, such as snare top, snare bottom or two heavy guitars summed to one. Or even a full drum kit summed to a stereo aux. Does that help? Thanks very much for your question, I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    • @lindataylormusic
      @lindataylormusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly...and I think when Warren and I were discussing it we were specifically talking about using an external summing box as opposed to the internal summing of the DAW. There's endless sees of information about the Pro Tools summing bus (any DAW's) and your ears will tell you which way you need to go. I was an early adopter of external summing, and I still use it today.

    I always wonder what the difference is between the analog section of the Dangerous Music summing boxes (which don't allow you to control anything) and a Mackie mixer, for instance. I have an old Mackie 8 bus (24x8) and was thinking of trying it for summing - can anyone explain what's so good about the analog section of the dangerous music summing boxes? Thanks in advance.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jed Wunderli great question! I would say that the Dangerous Summing box with transformers in it will be a lot warmer sounding than the Mackie, however I would definitely try the Mackie, I'd be intrigued to see how it sounded! She mentioned she wanted to get an Apogee - UAD just came out with an upgraded Apollo 8 with better converters and such and I also noticed she has the Avid converters (HD system, I think?) Some people like the small amounts of distortion you get from analog gear and that's fine. But distortion is a commodity item, and need not cost a lot. If the analog gear is very high quality, and not colored, then it should be audibly the same or very close to digital summing. So to my way of thinking, mixing OTB is not worth the expense and considerable effort

    • @krissinistar6959
      @krissinistar6959 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mixers perform 3 main functions: level balancing of multiple audio streams (level controls or faders), spatial placement (panning) and summing theaudio to stereo. A summing amplifier simply sums multiple audio streams to stereo, while the DAW's mixer is used to perform the mixing functions of balancing and panning.

    Great vid! All that lovely gear... It's like looking in the shop window at guitars I can't afford (bit hard). Interesting point about sound treatment; I asked you about this the other day, but I'm sure it's better to treat the room if you're recording acoustic guitar (any recorded instrument), particularly if all the recordings sound boxy no matter how many mic placements you try out. I was just wondering if you think it's a waste of time and money to get sound treatment for recording. Great guitar skills Linda! Thanks :-)

    Basic question: Linda mentioned keeping certain pedals out of the chain. How exactly does that work and still get the effect sound?

    • @lindataylormusic
      @lindataylormusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Steve, certain pedals have a noticeable 'tone suck', they rob your signal of high end and dimension, even when turned off. So I put them on a bypass looper - they are out of the signal chain until they're turned on. Usual suspects are wah pedals, tuners, certain kind of modulation pedals, etc. Hope that helps.

    I have a question about external summing (never tried it). So, you send two channels from your DAW to a summing mixer. That does its "magic", and outputs again 2 separate channels, which you route back to your interface and... what then? Do you record them back to your DAW? I mean, does it "hurt" to let the DAW to sum the signals from the mixer again to make a stereo mix? :) Or did I miss the point of what you do totally? :)

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi apinakapinastorba thanks for the great question. Yes often I have just sent the stereo mix through the line amp of a 1073 Mic Pre like the pair that Linda has and yes it does go back to the DAW. The 1073 helps glue it together nicely, I wouldn't do it on every mix but it's a great thing to do occasionally. Also if you have a summing mixer you can send individual tracks out to the summing mixer and then bounce them back together to add some additional warmth and width. Thanks very much for the wonderful comment! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
