Midwest Emo: The sound of your parents arguing over the Final Fantasy VIII OST playing on the file select screen while you learn to noodle in alternate tunings

The 90s emo scene (if you want to call it a scene) had such a high density of amazing bands. Sunny Day Real Estate, Braid, Mineral, Texas is the Reason, Rainer Maria, The Get Up Kids, Cap n’ Jazz, Jimmy Eat World, The Promise Ring, Knapsack, Everyone Asked About You, Christie Front Drive, Boys Life, Jejune, American Football, Endive, and more.
i'm 40 and grew up on this stuff. i'm a barber and i was cutting a 24 year olds hair the other day and we got on to talking about emo via hardcore. he told me the first time he ever heard American Football was AT A CONCERT. i was like "bruh...i hate you." lol
Here in brazil we had a pretty good year for emo/midwest emo records! here's a few that were released last year: Um quarto (¼) - do que somos capazes (full disclosure, this is my band) Quarto vazio - fábulas Polara - Partilha Quem é você, alice? - rolê trevas pt II
Bella e o Olmo da Bruxa is also another great one!!! They even sample Tim Maia in one of their songs (Tu Me Trocou por um Cara Que Usa Sapatênis). Maybe not Midwest Emo, but definitively good Brazilian emo hehehe. ps: listening to your album as a write this and hell yeah man! parabéns, muito foda
I'm just getting into Midwest emo as I close in on 60. You mentioned a number of my new favorites - American Football, oso oso, the world is a beautiful place, Rainer Maria, Palette Knife, Cadwallader, and Marietta, but I was surprised to see no mention of Empire! Empire! (I was a lonely estate). I think their 2009 release What it Takes to Move Forward is one of the best albums in the genre.
i just watched your history of emo video the other day and it sent me into a state where like all i can listen to is midwest emo and then now theres THIS VIDEO as im fixating on midwest emo its a blessing its a blessing

I lived the first couple of years of my life in the neighborhood with the American Football house. I didn't think anything of the house until recently. I don't like Midwest emo, but I'm glad the house and the genre have shed some light on this beautiful region. Whenever I go to Champaign, I always go near the house.
I loved this!! If you get around to the Cap’n Jazz family tree/KinsellaCore video, please dont leave out Owen; his music and style of playing entirely in alternate/open tunings is so under appreciated

It's pretty awesome to see that a Latino rock song like "A La Hora Señalada/Hermanita" has a style that predates an entire genre in another part of the world. I have recently been getting into Latino alternative rock because I am Venezuelan-American myself, and I have been wanting to brush up my Spanish. I highly recommend "Otro Dia Mas" by Bye Sami, "Apoyo Emocional" by Estoy Bien, and uklao's self-titled album.
It does predate midwest emo but it doesn't predate US and UK post punk, jangle pop and/or dream pop which was already incorporating that type of guitar style into its music in the early 80s. R.E.M. in the early to mid 80's was laying a foundation for a lot of what the midwest emo, indie and slowcore bands did later on. Cocteau Twins and the Cure were doing it too. The style evolved from a ton of different genres probably as far back as the 60s with maybe The Beach Boys. It's fair to credit hardcore and punk because you can trace the lineage easily with band members and record labels, venues, etc but it's evident that there were much earlier examples of the sound. I'm sure eventually we'll find some finger style guitarist from the 50s who did a twinkle daddy riff at one point. It's pretty fun to hear the evolution of music.
Where's a band like Cursive in all this, I've watched a couple of your videos and loved them, but growing up (I'm an old head), I feel like they were bigger than the credit they've been getting but i never see them mentioned anywhere. 6 years ago ended my relationship with my ex fiancé, drifted around for 6 months drinking, sleeping with random girls, and partying hard trying to get my head straight. Ran into a meme page with someone flipping off a house and everyone saying American Football, had to look it up and heard Never Meant and fell in love instantly. Later I heard a Ska Version from Skatune Network which I started to love as well which later on put out a version of Misery Business with the lead singer of Pool Kids and led me to Math Rock and more Midwest Emo and I was fully hooked. Now I search out Midwest Emo Mixtapes daily, try to find new bands, and sink my teeth into everything
There is nothing more Midwest than these lyrics which succinctly summarizes my childhood from 1978-1983 in rural Ohio: Lemonade stands and memories Of innocence and purity And the noonday sun at ninety degrees The things I carry with me The ice cream man at four or five How'd we flag him down and ask for rides And evenings when we'd sit outside And name the cloud shapes in the sky Those days are gone now and we must carry on But I will not forget the things I learned on your front lawn And how we rode those dusty trails On Huffys and Schwinns from Christmas sales Made forts out of crates with rusty nails And only came home when our stomachs failed
glocca morra mentioned 😭💕 y’all boots hats is a great example of good lyrics, calling out to philosophers of the past in existential angst . one of my favorite bands ever
It’s a good point that the Emo scene embraces the different sound. The first time I was introduced to them I was given a mix CD. The other kid said track 16 is the twinkle one I like by American football. The other half of the CD? Planes Mistaken for Stars. I also saw Owen (Mike Kinsella solo project) in a show with planes mistaken for stars, from autumn to ashes, and Thursday). It was completely normal.
I come from Extreme metal, especially Death-Doom. I found "I Hate Myself:10 Songs" and really loved the sound and emotion, im not sure how it were mixed up in my music but im glad it did. It took me down a rabbit hole, into Screamo & Midwest in an effort to find similar vibes. American Football is great, got their first two albums. Vs Self is great too, love their album "Everything Seems better now" just wish i could snag it on CD! Music I want preserved beyond digital media. Camping in Alaska, Fkin supreme too. Hits the feels, but in a good way. Great video, and i definitely gleaned to learn more about Midwest Emo.
Fucking nailed it. Not only do I think youre pretty accurate in your retelling, but you take the right attitude into it. Lets delve into the nuances of subgenres for the FUN of it, not so we can take ourselves so seriously.
what a great video!! I myself am a former indie rock artist BUT my newest album Losercore drops on March 29th and is VERY Midwest emo/math rock derived. I've always loved the genre but never had the balls to jump into it haha. I kinda played around with a more midwest emo sound on my last album, Carpe Diem but it feels really good to just jump 10 toes deep into it now. Excited to share my project with the world and am proud to contribute to the ever expanding Genre that is, Midwest Emo.
I think we need a video on how midwest emo now created emo trap. Not as popular of a genre as it was a few years ago but worth noting. 93 feet of smoke and guardin do this style well!!
For as great and important as American Football is, I have trouble viewing that album as particular quintissential for the genre ('quintissential' in the sense of 'the MOST midwest emo thing,' rather than the best midwest emo thing). The jazz influences and lack of angsty breakup lyrics really make it feel very different from most other midwest emo albums to me. Which is great! I like that they clearly aren't like other bands in the genre. They really are as good as everyone says! If I had to pick a quintissential album for the genre, I think either one of Mineral's albums would be candidates for the most pure refinement of that sound -- I think modern midwest emo bands resemble them more than anything else in the 90s. Texas Is the Reason's Do You Know Who You Are and The Promise Ring's Nothing Is Good would also be strong candidates in my book. (The Promise Ring is there for people who like the hypier elements of midwest emo -- I like those too, but when a band leans too much into them, I have trouble hearing it as emo anymore. This is why I wouldn't put Something to Write Home About or Frame and Canvas as candidates for the quintessential emo album, even though Frame and Canvas is my favorite album you mentioned in this video and one of the best albums of the 90s. I don't want to angst to most of those albums, I just want to headbang to them.)
Newfound Interest in Connecticut is a personal favorite not mentioned here. Although I think they lean more towards post rock than Midwest emo. Please check them out if you haven’t
To anyone saying every midwest emo album is about break-ups. I counter that with sports.'s We'll Get To It Eventually, that album perfectly encapsulates existential dread, self-doubt, the experience of losing friends, and such without a break-up song that I can think of.

Something to Write Home About is the first emo album I got. State Champs is also really good, it was the first time i heard about them when i booked the tickets, but now I'm hooked!
08:45 the reason it was adopted by the schmorgasborg that is indie, underground, DIY, hardcore kids is in the video that immediately preceeds. The Fireside Bowl was the venue, since 1994 was basically a garden of musical divesity with shows intentionally booked with bands that should never have, and today would never play with each other. Just Google Fireside Bowl fliers and look at any other the fliers lets see...
What do you think of French Screamo bands? I dont' find any video about this scene if not only in old forum. I don't know if is from an european perspective but for me it's been very important for my backkground in this genre. It would be interesting to have a talk of this fantastic scene.
Like Mihai Edrisch,Suis La Lune, Daitro,Anomie,Amanda Woodward. But there are also many screamo band that took from that type of screamo like Raein,la Quiete,Shizune from Italy, but french scene seems so disitinctive for what usually been called Skramz.@@NeverNormal
I'm Glad Its You - Minor Acts Of Cannibalism will forever have a place in my heart. Carly Cosgrove is also really good. The Great Doheny is also really good
@@NeverNormal thinking of even more underrated bands, Michael Cera Palin, Jank (Hate Matt Diamond but jank was good), Microwave, Frat Mouse, Sports., Sport, Dogleg and Ben Quad Also come to mind!
I have to admit, I'm blown away by the fact that you ignored the massive Asian midwest emo scene entirely. It's probably bigger over there than it ever was here, and you didn't even breathe a word of it. I'm stunned.
Would you really like a 5-hour video just listing off every single band thats ever been described as emo? I will say though, in a decade chock full of buried treasure, Slowdown Virginia and Commander Venus are some of the best hidden gems of the 90's!
Turnover is tough but yes peripheral vision is emo but there first album was pop punk and everything after peripheral vision is shoegaze or something else idk.
Why haven't you spoken of or even mentioned Scary Kids Scaring Kids? Tyson Stevens was like no other vocalist in the genre & they're Ep, The City Sleeps in Flames 05 & self titled album 07 are all near perfect works. & the band name itself is from a song from Capp n' Jazz

For anyone looking for another recommendation, I'd add Elliott (from Kentucky), song "Miracle" as an example. Seems to me very Jimmy

pop punk, wish you were here is a banger. Can't wait for the album
Oso oso mentioned woahhhhh
Basking in the glow all summer
+ Arm's Length. If you like Charmer or Hot Mulligan, this is your new favorite band

Not me realizing I’ve been saying Joie De Vivre wrong after saying their name CONFIDENTLY in my own video 😅

BRVAE LITTLE ABACUS MENTIONED!!!
Cursive!
yuppppp, missed them Thanks for watching!
The best! Although, like most great bands, they never kept themselves strictly stuck in one genre.
Paperchamps is fun !
What do you think of French Screamo bands? I dont' find any video about this scene if not only in old forum.
I don't know if is from an european perspective but for me it's been very important for my backkground in this genre.
It would be interesting to have a talk of this fantastic scene.
Can you give me some bands to check out?
Like Mihai Edrisch,Suis La Lune, Daitro,Anomie,Amanda Woodward. But there are also many screamo band that took from that type of screamo like Raein,la Quiete,Shizune from Italy, but french scene seems so disitinctive for what usually been called Skramz.@@NeverNormal
So... are we not talking about Tiny Moving Parts?
I'm Glad Its You - Minor Acts Of Cannibalism will forever have a place in my heart. Carly Cosgrove is also really good. The Great Doheny is also really good
every sun and every moon is such an underrated album
@@NeverNormal thinking of even more underrated bands, Michael Cera Palin, Jank (Hate Matt Diamond but jank was good), Microwave, Frat Mouse, Sports., Sport, Dogleg and Ben Quad Also come to mind!
Worst Party Ever too. Damn there are so many!
I have to admit, I'm blown away by the fact that you ignored the massive Asian midwest emo scene entirely. It's probably bigger over there than it ever was here, and you didn't even breathe a word of it. I'm stunned.
spotted a chillwavve records release 👀
saw you uploaded the captain jazz album. Tell them I love them and I talked to the emo council and they're in the kinsella family tree.
Not mentioning Midwest Pen Pals is crazy😭
Retirement Party, kississippi & teen suicide ! Good video👍🏼
Still jam shoulder it from the time to time. Indigo by kississippi is a jammmmmmmm
Thanks for watching!
Should have talked about the front bottoms they have been really influential in the scene
yup, fair point, missed them
What about the Bright Eyes and EmOmaha ?
Would you really like a 5-hour video just listing off every single band thats ever been described as emo? I will say though, in a decade chock full of buried treasure, Slowdown Virginia and Commander Venus are some of the best hidden gems of the 90's!
My Top 5 Midwest Emo Bands in no particular order:
Free Throw
Chinese Football
Tiny Moving Parts
Castevet
Sports.
Thanks for watching!
Shocked there wasn’t a Turnover mention
Turnover is tough but yes peripheral vision is emo but there first album was pop punk and everything after peripheral vision is shoegaze or something else idk.
@@NeverNormal Totally fair, I viewed them as pop punk but everyone told me no and I’m like.. welp okay lol. Appreciate you!
I stumbled across a band called deadramonoes, they are super good check out their songs 'Shine Dog' and 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring'
Why haven't you spoken of or even mentioned Scary Kids Scaring Kids? Tyson Stevens was like no other vocalist in the genre & they're Ep, The City Sleeps in Flames 05 & self titled album 07 are all near perfect works. & the band name itself is from a song from Capp n' Jazz
yup missed that one, Thanks for watching!
I’d love to see a history of ska punk like less than Jake🙏
