Steve Collins was extraordinary. My favorite boxer of all time. Great champion. Not just the heart of a lion; but the physical attributes that great middleweights have. He definitely studied Benn heavily before that fight (those hooks to the body and face were definitely the best technique for Nigel (excellent, excellent fighter - thought to be unbeatable before this fight). He studied the great Chris Eubanks as well. He found avenues. A Celtic Warrior, pure and simple. Very humble and friendly guy; but I would DEFINITELY be polite to him if I met him!
Not taking anything away from Collins, he was as hard as a coffin nail. But by 96 I dont think Benn had the same savagery as he did in 91. Even think Benn had become a DJ around 96. Still, both absolute warriors of the sport.
Not sure why his corner pulled Nigel Benn out of this fight. He didn't look injured and was firing back well in what turned out to be the final round. I can't believe a warrior like Benn said to his corner he didn't want to continue - he'd rather be stretchered out of the ring and go out on his shield as he's stated on many occasions. I think he turned his ankle in the first fight, so that was understandable (the stoppage) as he couldn't put any weight on it, and it would obviously have affected his balance. Collins stated, after he'd retired, that Benn was the hardest puncher he'd share a ring with. Great fight regardless of the outcome - thanks for up-loading.
collins made me laugh in the gloves are off episode with all the other middleweights,where he said to roy jones he had unfinished business,c'mon steve,roy was levels above your ability,take heart in knowing fight fans admired your warrior spirit and never say die approach.nigel had grit and heart,both guys brought it to the table for sur,pity it eneded on a damp note though,would have been a gatti/ward style affair for sure.
Not many are saying this; but Collins had skill. "Levels above" is just not accurate. Benn and Eubank were spoken about like they were unbeatable prior to facing Collins. I think because of his toughness, grit, etc., people overlook that he brought some very good physical attributes to the sport (e.g., good speed, excellent timing, craft). Benn and Eubank were tough also... just outperformed.
