This song suddenly popped into my head this morning so had to hear it again. I was 16 when it came out & I had the album. Was sharing a house at the beach with a bunch of friends & we played the album over & over. Not to mention many others that summer! It was a great year for music. I'm 67 now and the song is as great today as it was then. Timeless!
The harmonies are incredible, their vocals complement each other so perfectly it’s ridiculous. Like they were genetically engineered to form CSN&Y, OMG!
In an interview, one member of the band said that Stills played just about all the instruments on this album. The soul is profound! Pure genius, with inimitable solos woven throughout. The harmonies rival a medieval Gregorian choir in their ability to evoke a religious feeling. And, as has been said, timeless. The theme of the song, post-nuclear apocalypse, also speaks to what I believe is a root cause of the youth rebellion of the sixties, fear of annihilation by their elders' folly, and a wish to recover sanity. That menace, of nuclear-tipped missiles, still hangs over us all today, and this song thus holds its meaning.
The rest of the band gave Stills the nickname Captain Manyhands. Great collaborative effort. Paul Kantner wrote most of the song, Crosby wrote the intro, and Stills added a verse for the CS&N version.
I’m a working musician who plays this song regularly at events. And I’m sure David Crosby plays the strong rhythm guitar on the main verse portion of this song, and that he contributed the unique jazz oriented chords of that section. Those are pure Crosby chords, typical of his musical signatures , which is also evident in Guenevere on the same album. That’s not Still’s musical style. So I’d say your assessment of is mostly correct, but let’s give Crosby his musical due.
Thank you for this insight. Yes, he deserves great credit for the overall composition and feel. The reference to Guinevere is apposite in this regard, as is the comparison with the Jefferson Airplane version, which is inferior in my opinion, in its ability to evoke a freedom that is bittersweet, paid for with civilization’s destruction. David Crosby belongs to the ages for his legacy and I credit his compositions with having wrought a portion of my innermost psychological framework. What a shame he was so troubled, but to play the blues, you’ve got to live the dues.
@@nancydemoss2945 Once we introduce the song live by saying it’s about the downside of nuclear war, we get both a laugh and some new appreciation for the song from some younger folks listening. Probably somewhat due to the recent nuke rattling of Vlad Putin.
My mom would play this album while she cleaned house when I was a toddler. Still merge the smell of Pinesol and Comet with thus great track. Stills is criminally underrated as a musician.
Rest in peace, David Crosby. I was born in '73, and have loved this genre of music since childhood. As I am approaching 50 this June, my appreciation of your music and that of your cohorts has created an indelible mark on my psyche. Thank you for the joy that you've all brought to the planet. 🤟🏼
This song puts me into a trance singing and closing my eyes. Losing myself in this music is food for my soul. Only few bands can attain this warm feeling for me and time doesn't mean anything.
Hail too all the bands of the 60's & 70's. Some of the truly greatest music promotors had a lot to do. How many "Days on The Green" at the Oakland, Ca Coliseum promoted by Bill Graham. Every Saturday we hitched a ride over & saw the epitome of rock bands. Saw CS&N then CSN&Young. I wish I could back, I wish I could go back. Living in San Francisco, their wasn't a band you didn't see. I can't even name all my favorites from CSN&Y way to long of a list. Going on 70yrs old now but that light in my heart still burns deep inside. Still listening 2023.
i was at the Santa monica pier..early 70's.🦈..the pier had ginormous speakers..Wooden Ships came on and something in me clicked on..when that song plays i'm fourteen again..for the 5:25 mins anyway..missing David always. ❤🐬🐳🦈
Stills' guitar work on this is masterful. Thanks for posting this awesome link to my youth. Ahhhhh the 70's. Everyone should have been lucky enough to grow up then.
In '69 I went to the wrong concert... Strawberry Fields in Toronto, the same weekend as something called "Woodstock" just down the road in upstate New York... Who knew?? But many performers played @ both... Cocker, Jimi, C&N... Time tells us much... And then the summer of 70 happened, where we (Mike, John & myself) for to see every concert in Chicago that summer... Be it the Auditorium of Arie Crown, we were there... Ten Years After, Zeppelin, Cocker, James Taylor, Yes, Jimi, the Stones, Moody Blues, Traffic, the Who... I lived the dream, I just didn't know it at the time! Thank you, CSN&Y, for SO many great memories over the years...
Saw every band you listed except for Hendrix. Add to that list Pink Floyd, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, the Who, ELP, Steely Dan, and the Rolling Stones, etc. We did live the dream. So happy to have been around for that.
Dude those must've been some HEAVY drugs you was on because the Strawberry Fields Festival was the following summer and none of the acts you mentioned played there...they say if you remember the 60's you weren't there so...

I wonder if the youth of today could catch the meaning of songs like this.
@@nancydemoss2945 Once we introduce the song live by saying it’s about the downside of nuclear war, we get both a laugh and some new appreciation for the song from some younger folks listening. Probably somewhat due to the recent nuke rattling of Vlad Putin.
Im.70 and still love this shit.
Class of '72 reporting in - love this shit 😊
RIP David Crosby. My mother still has this record from her youth. You were a great musician
MY GOD the guitar and bass are amazing together.
Don't forget the synth...awesome music!
Stephen Stills on guitar AND bass.
One of my favorites, any genre. The harmonizing is unreal
Who won? MAN! I grew up listening to CSNY and it’s one of the things I’m grateful to my parents for. I will never tire of their music.
Love Stephen’s voice in my right ear & David’s in my left one, both blend so skillfully to make a wonderful song, so Free & Easy to listen to!
♥️🎧♥️
REST IN PEACE DAVID CROSBY Thanks for the Music!
Reminds me of Woodstock! That's what this country needs another concert like that. Too much hate now! back then it was nothing but Peace and Love.
I was born 1953 and I still love this group like they were still together
These are one of the many groups we would listen to back in the Sixties.....😉
Thank you, CSNY, for some of the most beautiful songs I know of. This is one of them. RIP David Crosby.
I was 14 in 1969 when my brother came home from nam.
My music and life forever changed.
This music is magic for the soul. It will be here on earth for all future generations to listen to.
"magic for the soul"....what a wonderful take on this tune! Yes, indeed!
Hope they do, it would open their minds.
Fully agreed, friend....A greeting from Italy
So will I. It keeps me bound to this realm because I love it too much.
Grew up in the California Bay Area in the 60’s and 70’s. This song brings back many memories.
One of Stephen Stills and David Crosby’s best Collaborations, the lyrics and harmonies are very Sublime.
Co-written with Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane also. They have their version of the song.
That Hammond Organ shimmering buzz throughout sort of sets this song apart..and David's hippie voice reeks of late 60's.
Free and easy🕊️
My mom would play this album while she cleaned house when I was a toddler. Still merge the smell of Pinesol and Comet with thus great track. Stills is criminally underrated as a musician.
Memories of being young and free out on the ocean sailing away to this tune! Oh how I miss and long for those days! “Talkin bout very free and easy.”
Rest in peace, David Crosby. I was born in '73, and have loved this genre of music since childhood. As I am approaching 50 this June, my appreciation of your music and that of your cohorts has created an indelible mark on my psyche. Thank you for the joy that you've all brought to the planet. 🤟🏼
Crosby's rage is weepiingly beautiful.
My favorite CSN song. I play it often. I played it a lot yesterday after hearing about David Crosby's passing. Thanks for the music, guys.
I'm 71 too. Funny how many of us are the same age and have commented here. It's the music we grew up on and remember.
CSN and Y. :)
Stills great guitar. Underrated.
I'm a 55 year old man that was born in 1967 and I pull a vibe off this song that was no doubt felt when this song was released. Beautiful!
So lucky to have been around when this sort of music was breaking.
This song puts me into a trance singing and closing my eyes. Losing myself in this music is food for my soul. Only few bands can attain this warm feeling for me and time doesn't mean anything.
Psychedelic is letting your mind wonder and go free
If you smile at me, but we are all the same, in these massive crazy days of our lives, we can only enjoy and remember.....
This song brings back so many memories from my youth. 70’s and 80’s what a great time
60's & 70's I remember Disco creeping in in the 80's. Disco & hard drugs.
Blasting on a sound bar, working at home. Catching a vibe for the day.
@@boomer1954ful Disco was 70s NOT 80s..started in 1974 disco music peaked from 1976 to 1979 disco was dead by 1981.
The best!
Your songs will live forever, RIP David Crosby
One of the greatest rock songs ever. I’m 67 and still love it. My 3 year old grand daughter loves it too !
You've taught your granddaughter well!
Tomorrow is 2020! Music like this will never die, I wish everyone a great happy decade ahead🙂!
A decade to move on.
You too buddy 🤘
And to you.
Be well 💚💚💚
Tomorrow is today. How bout that-
Beautiful and timeless. One of my all-time favorites.
Still listening 2023.
i was at the Santa monica pier..early 70's.🦈..the pier had ginormous speakers..Wooden Ships came on and something in me clicked on..when that song plays i'm fourteen again..for the 5:25
mins anyway..missing David
always. ❤🐬🐳🦈
I’m 65 and grew up in Houston. Long summer days and this is one of my favorite tunes from those days. The music of the 60’s and 70’s is the best!!
Stills' guitar work on this is masterful. Thanks for posting this awesome link to my youth. Ahhhhh the 70's. Everyone should have been lucky enough to grow up then.
Brilliant guys, i have seen them 3 times !
Malcolm Platt it was cool. And there werent cameras everywhere.....
his guitar is masterful. beautiful song with steve's awesome guitar.
I think Stills is the most underrated guitarist ever.
Very cool L Strauss. I'm jealous - though I felt he played just for me often I got so lost in some of those records.
One thing I like about TH-cam is that it lets me rediscover great music from my youth.
and see videos I never saw back then
Still thrills and moves me today, as it did 45 years or more ago when I first heard CSNY. What a great band, and such amazing, iconic songs.
Words are inadequate for my gratitude for the magic created by David Crosby and Stephen Stills and Graham Nash and Neil Young. Ageless.
Strawberry Fields was in Ontario in 70, Woodstock was in Bethel in 69. Sounds like you smoked a little to much. lol
Saw every band you listed except for Hendrix. Add to that list Pink Floyd, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, the Who, ELP, Steely Dan, and the Rolling Stones, etc. We did live the dream. So happy to have been around for that.
omg, so jealous! But appreciate that, at the time, I was alive and listening, if I couldn't listen live.
Do you remember the concert at Strawberry Fields in 1970?
Dude those must've been some HEAVY drugs you was on because the Strawberry Fields Festival was the following summer and none of the acts you mentioned played there...they say if you remember the 60's you weren't there so...
Just gets better with age. I profoundly hope our successors will be as moved listening to this many decades and centuries into the future
I’m black and I love their music!!! It shows you music is color blind!
thats right. comedy to. like a sharp knife they both can cut through you like butter-not a bad thing
WHO CARES ABOUT THESE COLOURS... we are Humans
Nice, mellow tune here
Amen!!
@@guntherzaruba2891
Most peoples of the world care about color whether they admit it or not. People are racist that's a fact and it's probably more like a tribal condition. You may not like the truth but you cannot change it by just not liking it.
Some of the most beautiful harmonies ever.
Just heard the news …
David Crosby has passed away. RIP your wonderful music will always be listened to & you will never be forgotten ❤️✌️
RIP Crosby
One of my all time favorite songs
I'm just past 62 and remember tripping and heard this, what a powerful lasting positive memory!
Let your mind be free
