    one time when i was 16 i was watching avatar and my mom walked in on yue's death scene. and she had seen the show too so she knew what was happening and when yue's spirit disappeared she turned to me and said "other 16 year olds are sacrificing themselves to save the moon spirit, what are you doing with your life?" and that will probably haunt me to my grave

    I do think the costumes are too polished but overall I think they make sense. These are based off of real tribal wear and it LOOKS warm unlike shamalyans

      @brinmoody ปีที่แล้ว +77

      Yes I was also going to comment something similar - traditional Siberian, Eastern and Southern Asian, and Northern Indigenous American peoples like the Inuit wear bright bold colours. Tibetan monks wear the exact same colours as Aang both in the animation and in this live action. They wear bold reds, bright marigold yellows, oranges. The Inuit peoples of Greenland have even more bright and colourful clothing traditionally, particularly for women, than what Sokka and Katara wear. There are also the peoples of Siberia to take into account, many of whom also dress not dissimilarly to what is represented here. The Fire Nation like Ozai for example, Japan, China, and many other Asian peoples wear and have worn varying shades of red. There are realistic clothing closures even, and there is even the small detail of clothing like the Kioshi Warriors taking off their shoes while inside, which is a common practice in many countries and peoples all across Asia.
      I will admit they do look a bit polished but I also don't find that to be a problem either. Personally I love that there is still a cartoon-y nature to the show. I don't think I want it to be exactly perfectly realistic. I really don't mind the idea of it being "cosplay"-like or otherwise not completely ultra realistic and I honestly find I think I prefer it that way. That is of course, just my personal opinion.

    • @K000H
      @K000H ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Yes the clothing looks real accurate to the clothes in the cartoon! Only problem is some of it looks too polished and new, as you said. The costume designers seem to forget this at times in various shows/movies.
      Can only hope that if it looks off throughout the entire season, they'll see the criticism and try to improve it for the next season.

      I think the same and I want too add that the last live action had some "good" points but since it was bad overall nobody wants to make a new twist in any way or at least won't until they understand what the people want

      Idk, I think the outfits in M.Night shaymalan's look way warmer

    • @Vanziethel
      @Vanziethel ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I'd probably word the criticism differently. I don't think it's exactly that the outfits look too polished, they just look too new. It's perfectly reasonable for a tribe like that to have well-made, good looking clothing. The thing that throws off the eye is that it doesn't look like anybody's ever worn it before. In the image Danny had up at 6:45 when he was making his point about the outfits, it's pretty visible. The blue of Katara's outfit looks uniform, like none of it has had a chance to fade slightly from the vibrant blue it was originally coloured. The fur looks brand-new, the inside lining is pristine, and there aren't any other signs of wear either. At a certain point, the eye notices that kind of stuff about an outfit, and notices that it looks new. In the context of a show, even without consciously noticing it the audience can be taken out of their immersion by it.

    I think what strikes me about Katara and Sokka's costumes is that they look too new? Like they don't look like an article of clothing that's been worn more than once and that makes it look costumy, or at least contributes to the costuminess. Also, I agree that Zuko's bending looked like something out of a fan film and it would have been nice if they'd shown us a longer sequence of bending so that we could actually see if it was good. And the fact that they didn't makes me nervous, as if maybe they didn't have anything better than that

    My problem with Zuko’s scar is that the eyebrow should not be there. Zuko only has one eyebrow in the show, and it’s reasonable to assume that if you get burned across the face around your eye your eyebrow hair will be burnt off. Eyebrows can be covered by cosmetics to blend in with the skin other projects have done it, so it wouldn’t be that big of an ask. At least to me.

      @lyz_aviscarlet1698 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      I agree and I also don't like that his ear is untouched and not deformed by the scar in any way. In the original the scar was way bigger, actualy lookd very painful to get and was meant to be a horrific reminder to everyone that not even Ozai's family can disrespect him in any way. I get it, minimalism and all, but Zuko's scar, how big it was and where it was placed is what defined both him and his father to me. Ozai didn't care that he deformed his one and only son and Zuko, while slightly ashamed, didn't try to hide it in any way.
      The new one looks like he slept wrong and now has an inprint of something on his eye. It deasn't look pernament at all

    • @K000H
      @K000H ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah i'm a bit bummed about his scar not being as big, but honestly that's a minor flaw. As long as the actor is good at portraying Zuko as well as the writing staying true to his character, i'm gonna be happy.

    • @tentenwolfgirl
      @tentenwolfgirl ปีที่แล้ว +10

      While it's probably an oversight, I see it as somewhat a necessity for portraying emotion. I often had referenced the two Cylcopes we got in Xmen. The first actor wore sunglasses while the 2nd actor wore much larger goggles. Because of this, the 2nd cyclops in the newer Xmen movies looked kinda dumbstruck and funny in serious scenes where all we saw was his mouth and lack of eyes. While the original cyclops in the first movies was much more easy to ready because of his eyebrows.
      This is my biggest explanation because animation is much easier to contort the face to display emotions like rage and embarrassment without the use of words. So they need the important feature of eyebrows to display what we can't easily see especially if half of zukos face shouldn't move well due to the burns

  • @alphalunablue8918
    @alphalunablue8918 ปีที่แล้ว +489

    The main issue i see a lot of people having (myself included) with Zukos scar, is that its not supposed to be just some mark on his face. Its supposed to be something that has actually deformed his face. If you look at Zukos scar in the animated version you can see:
    -Lines used to express an odd shape to the skin (maybe lumpy, maybe stretched, probably swollen)
    -A missing eyebrow
    -An inability to fully open his scarred eye
    The first two of which ive seen intermediate makeup artists do relatively well, and the third ive seen in several movies.
    The scar is meant to represent both Ozai's cruelty, and Zuko's entire journey. From wearing it as a reminder of his shame and his mission to capture Aang, to a reminder that his own father permanently damaged him in a way that would never fully heal.
    That little mark on Live action Zukos face just doesnt hold that weight.
    Everything else i agree with though. The wardrobes and appa and momo just kinda feel out of place, and Netflix needs to give us a reason to WANT to watch the show. Im hoping it does

      While I completely agree the scar isn't as gnarly as it could and arguably should be. From a practical standpoint if they wanted to change the shape of his eye they would need at least a partial prosthetic which would mean way more hours in the make up chair everyday, which mean longer and/or more working days, which would mean more money. I know this seems like a stupid reason not to do it - and I would whole heartedly agree with you - this is how sets are run these days, studio executives will readily sacrifice quality for more money and it's really fucking disheartening.
      They could've shaved his eyebrow though.

    In the cartoon, Zuko’s scarred eye is small and very wrinkled- as if the skin around it has damaged the way it looks. In this live action, it just looks like he has red skin. The costume department seems to be lacking the budget for proper outfits and makeup.

    I think Netflix tried really hard to separate their costumes from the first movie's, and because most people are used to that movie despite hating it, the transition was weird. In another aspect, Suki wasn’t in that movie, so Netflix had a bit more freedom to make her costume look less like a costume. Also, because she wasn’t in it, there’s no one to compare her to other than the original cartoon.
    Overall, there will always be two sides. Those who liked the costumes of the live action movie and those who want to see replicas of the costumes from the original show.

    I think the costumes are pretty decent. When you look at the clothing from Inuit and Tibetan cultures there are plenty of vibrant colors used in traditional garb. And as for what they showed us. If you think about the scenes they included, it seems like they understand what the tone of avatar is supposed to be. They included the Air nation genocide, they included Aang’s encounter with Hei Bali’s forrest and Roku’s Island. So there will be spiritual stuff going on. And it seems they might focus on Aang’s struggle to accept his responsibility as the Avatar. They included the Kyoshi Warriors and Sokka interacting with them, that’s a key part of his character arc. They included the Agni Kai for Zuko’s arc.

And I unfortunately don't remember the video, but there was a different video I watched some time back talking about how Netflix live action shows have a certain look to them because they're more designed to be played as background continuously. so if more than one shows after the other, it doesn't look different and draw attention to not looking the same?

    One of my biggest issues with live action comic/anime adaptations is that it's very VERY hard not to make the actors look like cosplayers. The costumes look like costumes instead of clothes, if you get what I mean. In my opinion, recreating original costumes with even more flair and detail makes them seem out of place in a "real" world. Not to mention people living their lives on the road would not look so crazy neat and clean, and some "style" additions would simply be immensely impractical.
    Edit: I see you mentioned that too lol, but yeah I totally agree.

    I think my main issue with zukos scar is the texture. There is simply not enough of it. Most burn scars have a lot of texture and are raised more than the unburned tissue around them. You can actually see this pretty well in the animated show. Zuko's scarred eye looks like it's almost swollen shut. Because of the raised tissue. And there are always lines indicating that its more textured than his regular skin. The netflix version does seem to have some texture. But its small. Which, especially for burns with fire is more unusual than bigger texture as far as im aware. It almost seems like some examples I've seen where people gt compression-wear after burn-injuries. And zuko 100% didn't get any of that.
    Additionally. Its too small. Its maybe a third of the size of animated Zukos scar. And i just don't understand that decision. With that decision they also kept his ear completely unharmed.
    Also, no fucking way this boys eyebrow is intact.

    A few people have pointed out that the word “Eskimo” is actually offensive and the proper term is “Inuit”. I’m sorry for using such an outdated term and wasn’t aware of its history. I’ll certainly be removing it from my vocabulary moving forward.
    For the people saying “it’s a teaser, not a trailer, you shouldn’t judge it so hard” - a teaser’s sole purpose is to be judged. Like…it’s a slice of the project that helps you make an informed decision on whether or not you’ll want to see the project. It exists to be judged 😅 also as a teaser it’s just pretty bland in my opinion.

What I’m most disappointed about the live action trailer is the fact that they revealed the fire lord’s face. The fun part about his reveal in the original show is that he was a looming figure that hung around for two books, and then he was revealed in book 3, like oh he is a person and not just the idea of war and conquest.

    So I saw a costume artist do a breakdown of LOTR vs the Rings of Power and now i can't stop seeing this- which I think is what you're seeing in the netflix homogony.
    LOTR went really far out of their way in costuming to use natural dyes and era apropriate fabric for all of their costumes. So everything looks like it belongs and makes sense, so the audience can focus on other things, it fades into the background. *where it belongs*.
    In Rings of Power, which was made much more quickly, they don't bother to do this. All of the fabrics are cottons or polyester, and the dyes they use are bright rit dye colors that are simply unachievable in anything but the modern era. You can even see it in the armor especially- a lot of the chainmail is literally just yarn woven to *look* like it might be patterned mail but it's far too lose of a weave to be anywhere near believable. The one that bothered me most was you can see the mold casting lines on all the armor! and that feels Extremely weird in this setting.
    All of the Netflix adaptations have this problem as well, everything in the shows is made with these cheap fabrics, cheap dyes, and nothing feels like it belongs and nothing feels like it belongs, so it gives this vibe of trying to be a cartoon, or trying to be animated, when it really shouldn't be.

Being realistic, DRAWING that for every episode of the show would've been a massive pain for both the drawing aspect (because it would have to be replicated for each shot) and the animation aspect. The biggest issue I have with the costumes is that they are costumes. This isn't just netflix but production companies want to spend pennies on costume designers instead of really putting 5he necessary budget in. Their outfits COULD look amazing. If the design on Kataras parka was embroidered instead of clearly just a glued on design. If the fur looked real. If they had wear and tear. If that clasp looked like it was an actual closure instead of just there. Same with Aangs outfit. It could work. You just have to actually pay someone what it would cost to make it work.

    I love that Gen Z loves Avatar. But it was our show first. That’s why the trailer shows all the things we used to discuss on forums each week as episodes aired. It’s why one of the most lingering establishing shots we get is from the episode that gave us both the Cabbage Merchant and “Bonzu Pippinpaddleopsicopolis III.” It nodded to all our ancient memes and in-jokes, all the things we obsessed over and made theories on while we waited for the next Friday. I /love/ your explanation of the lenses, that was so cool to learn and I would listen to a whole series on you explaining film stuff 😅
    My issue with Zuko is that (as someone partially blind & HoH), the live action feels like it’s minimizing the damage Odai did to him by disfiguring his face - we never get real confirmation in the show but he’s more than likely deaf in the scarred ear and has to have lost at least some vision in the eye he can’t open fully because of the sheer amount of damage done externally. From experience I can 1000% promise as durable as you think eyes and ears should be, you need to divide that number by half and then at least 1/4 again 😅
    Anyway rambling about that aside, I really hope the show turns out to be at least vaguely appealing. We’re getting it, so we might as well be able to enjoy it, you know? I don’t have a lot of hope , but maybe we’ll be surprised! I do think the fire ending looks cool even if the backgrounds look silly and the costumes are a little whack. Maybe they’ll at least have the story right, and if not, well, Suki looks cool, Iroh looks like he’s pretty on point, Zuko looks great aside from my opinion on his scar not having quite enough detail, and Azula looks like the cruel, slightly insane child she is. I’m hoping we get to see Toph, Ty Lee, and Mai in the next trailer 🤞

      @@sophwitchproject let's just go back to One Piece, Blue Eye Samurai, Castlevania, Pluto, Captain Laserhawk. Even this Onimusha series and the Akuma-kun remake are quality productions. This little kid Unicorn thing my kids are watching is good for a Y7 project. Since we're talking animtion and anime live action remakes, just about everything new that has come out recently has been gorgeous and the stories are legit. Of course, not everyone has the same tastes but, if you're on a video talking about Avatar, I assume everyone here appreciates a beautiful animated project.

    probably because it's a teaser, not the actual trailer that's why it didn't showcase a lot of things, from lines, shots and bendings.

    Now that I think of it, that shot of the Agni Kai where there's a fire blast might actually be Zuko and Zhao's Agni Kai from the Southern Air Temple episode. Also, we kinda see Earthbending when the Omashu Gates open. (Also also, yeah, Suki and the Kyoshi warriors look immaculate and are probably the best part of the trailer)

    I think the first scene is the air nomads being attacked.
    The costume look too bright and saturated. I feel they were shy to grab elements from the movie because of its reception, cause the detailed tattoo looks more realistic, the blue arrow looks painted. Its like a live action that looks cartoony.
    Azula, Zuki and Sokka look great to be honest

    In the show Azula wasn't 16 or 17. She is 14.

    I think the costumes would look better, if they didnt look brand new and actually looked as though they were used and worn often. just add some wear and tear to clothes meant to always be worn in a cold snowy climate and theyd look more natural, the colors faded with snow and stuff probably permanently stuck to the fabric. Same with all the other places, make earth kingdom clothes worn and dirty, fire nation kind of singed or darkened. I guess Aang's clothes would look newer comparatively, but theyd still look broken in since he's had them so long, probably with some water and ice damage, windswept. That sort of thing. I love character design and considering how a design would work with specific clothes, just give it the look that makes sense with the story, and the abilities that exist within it.

    The biggest problem I have with this is the costumes and zukos scar. The costumes look way too new just like everyone else is saying they look like they’ve never been worn before and as a cosplayer it’s not that hard to make clothes look a little worn out and with zuko’s scar it’s just all wrong. First off in the show he only has one eyebrow and this is very easy to achieve with a glue stick, some powder, and some foundation. On top of that his “scar” looks like a birth mark not a scar from literally getting burnt in the face with fucking fire. And to get the affect of a burn scar is so easy all you need is some liquid latex, toilet paper, and something to kinda poke at it to give it that burnt skin affect. I’m not no professional, but I’m a cosplayer and that’s close enough. So if I could get it right I’m sure the makeup artist at Netflix can as well 😭😭😭

    18:00 it's also just a teaser it's not a full trailer yet and they've been very secretive about everything until now. I can't wait to get a full trailer with dialogue and more bending but again it's a teaser not a trailer

    I think that was the fire nations attack on the air temples not the siege of the north. If you pause, those are airbenders. Also, I like the more detailed faithful adaption of the costumes. ALSO, Azula was 14 or 15. She's Zuko's younger sister. It's ok Danny, we've all been traumatized. I understand your pickiness here but remember its just a teaser. Not a full trailer. Be patient everyone.

    Let's remember this is a teaser trailer 😅 teasers typically don't show much--especially regarding the story. That's where the feeling of "they're hiding things/not showing enough" comes from.

    Sooooo….you want the forrest to not look too realistic, but then want the costumes to be? Huh? You like contradicted yourself so many times. Also, teaser vs trailer! This is why I hate super fans and their conflicting and over nit-picky expectations.

    Also I don't know if this is a hot take but Dev Patel's Zuko is probably my favourite part of the M Night Shyamalan adaptation and I actually while his scar is different to the show it looks far better than it does in this netflix one so far.

    I always thought that there is no satisfying way one could make bending look good in real life. The choreography is so important to the bending, and I can't imagine it not looking goofy irl. Also air is invisible in real life. Don't know how they're going to make it look half as cool as the cartoon

  • @KaypainBeats

    Ok youre just nit picking. Youre literally complaining that the characters look like their actual characters. Like what 😂
