    Just another sad example of how artists that aren’t business savvy are taken advantage of. One of the reasons why Tim Gunn was so loved was that he genuinely cared about the designers and always had their best interests at heart. Real class act.

    • @WoefulMinion
      @WoefulMinion ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sadly, even artists that are business savvy get taken advantage of. Producers only care about money and power. They'll do anything and say anything to get what they want. They have lawyers who can make life miserable for artists, but get themselves out of contracts when it affects their interests. So you can be savvy and get a good contract, but it'll cost you dearly to hold studios and producers to the terms.

    • @debbiemartin2026
      @debbiemartin2026 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The contestants were on a show. The show owns their designs. I can’t imagine this isn’t in a contract.
      If a designer works for a dress company, the design is the companies, not theirs.
      Its a no brainer.

    • @MamaMOB
      @MamaMOB ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Business classes should come standard in any art degree. If you're going into art of any kind and you work for a company that art doesn't belong to you it's not yours. It's the companies. Unfortunately artists don't know this. Maybe if we actually taught them about business they'd be a little bit more savvy.

    • @MamaMOB
      @MamaMOB ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WoefulMinion if you know about business and aren't illiterate you can't be taken advantage of. You can only agree to something you shouldn't agree to. And if you agree to something you know you shouldn't agree to your not being taken advantage of you're being stupid.

    • @MamaMOB
      @MamaMOB ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@debbiemartin2026 I don't get why creatives don't understand that. They don't own what they create for someone else. The person who bought it does. And it doesn't matter what type of art we're talking about. From comic books to movies to clothing. The creator at the end of the day doesn't matter. The company who owns the product and the customer who buys the product matters.

    So good to finally get the truth. Even my husband became a Project Runway convert when Tim and Heidi were there. And when they jumped ship, we did, too. Why? Because a positive personality, genuinely interested in the humans around them, goes a very long way in a creative environment, and is a pleasure to watch. Tim has always been so protective and nurturing to the talented souls among us. It is a choice. It is a point of character to refrain from being dismissive of those who are struggling, particularly in the world of the arts. That dismissive attitude is what I see now in Project Runway, and it is painful to watch.

    I met Tim Gunn and his party leaving a restaurant next door to the restaurant that my office was leaving from a Christmas party. The two groups collided on a cold winter night on Capitol Hill in DC. Someone in my office loudly whispered "that's Tim Gunn". He smiled and she figured "hey" I am going to ask him photo. He said, why of course so we all asked for a picture with him.
    Mr. Gunn could have not been more pleasant and accommodating. By that time a larger crowd had gathered and EVERYONE wanted a photo. It was cold, late and windy. Mr. Gunn had on a suit and scarf but not a heavy coat. When I asked for a photo, I extended my hand to shake his and to tell him I loved his work. He gave me the warmest hand shake and embraced my waist for the pic and said thank you in the most sincerest way.
    I am rarely impressed by public figures. In the DC metro area, you can be riding the train with a member of Congress, live in a neighborhood with entertainers, public figures or professional athletes or their families, or befriend or work with family members of these people. In my case, I have friends who are in the entertainment and fashion business and have friends who used to be pro athletes. No big deal. Mr. Gunn was so impishly handsome with the bluest of blue eyes and the softest hands. He even entertained questions for a few minutes before he was pulled away. Everyone was touched by his kindness. A true gentleman and class act!!

    The reason they were okay with giving up the rights to that stuff is because they weren't using it and they knew they'd probably never would. They only claimed the rights to it out of a cursory protocol to try and grab and claim at everything they could. That's really cool that Tim Gunn stood up to them. Apparently he was just a professor at the school there and you just randomly got casted as a mentor on the show because they liked his personality. So he's not from the industry in Hollywood.

    Tim should create his OWN show where he has the final say. He could hire someone he trusts to run the behind the scenes stuff, he could have his lawyer in charge of the contracts the cast sign. He could really start his own production company from the ground up. Imagine if reality TV competition shows shifted to being equitable and profitable for everyone involved. Especially things like Drag Race that are SOOOO expensive for the contestants and pay them so little (but think of the EXPOSURE).

    This is exactly what the contestants have to sign for Ru Paul's Drag Race. For several years, Ru Paul, all the producers, and the production companies own the drag personas, a percentage of what they make, everything they make on the show, they're contractually obligated to make appearances (at their expense), and they have to sell all their merch through them, etc. It's pretty cut throat.
    Plus, the fracking.

    • @jermainecornelius7193
      @jermainecornelius7193 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yup, very much so. And what's so crazy but really messed up about it is that RPDR pretty much have a monopoly on mainstream drag. So much so that the queens will continue to sign those contracts no matter what. Simply because nowadays (even with social media) a queen can't become a huge name in drag outside of her bubble without going on that show.

    • @Dalsemien
      @Dalsemien ปีที่แล้ว +3

      While I agree with criticizing the conditions associated with the show, RuPaul is not responsible for the fracking. And numerous people have come out and analyzed the problematic and racist implications of blaming a black, queer man for what his white parter's family is doing on a ranch.
