I finally got around to making a second critique video and I was overwhelmed by the talent I received when I asked you all to send through your work. I always have a hard time choosing examples to show you but I tried to pick work that highlights mistakes I saw a few people making. Thanks so much for trusting me with your work and I hope you find this video useful. As always, leave any questions or suggestions in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer as many as I can!

As a teacher I really enjoyed watching and listening to you give feedback. You were respectful of the efforts but very clear-eyed and precise about your criticism and used each piece to highlight one main issue. Each critique built on those that went before (eg. the grid work) so that I came away wth a swag of very useful insights. It is very generous of you to share your expertise in such compassionate yet direct lessons. Thank you.

I think so many people become discouraged in their art because they receive harsh or unkind critique, maybe even as early as at junior school. There is always something kind to say about anyone's drawing, and follow it up with tips to improve. Thankyou Jono for sharing your awesome skills and for your kindness too. Hugs from London.

I'm always looking for advise, especially from some one at your level. I have no formal education, but I've always enjoyed drawing and just want to keep improving. With that said; I've been searching the old interwed for any tricks or tips to help me advance my technique. Your work is technically phenomenal, but if I were to critique you it would be about subject matter. There are some that are fine, but then there are some that look like pretentious art school angst. It's just not intellectually deep at the level of your skill, in my opinion. You don't need to go into the creepy surreal to show deep human emotions, either. Frankly, you're not hitting the mark on some of these, and it's a shame, because you obviously put in lots of time. I actually think it's warranted to put a little of the "unreal" in a realistic drawing, though, because this lets the viewer know its value over photography, but I feel like your approach is akin to getting smacked in the face with a water balloon. . . you know something significant happened, but you are in a state of confusion. Precise art needs a precise subject. And frankly, realistic art should be pretty, because reality is pretty, even when it's ugly. Your work seems ugly to me, despite its realism, because the subject matter is so mundane.
So, I just don't agree with certain creative choices that I've seen. However, like I'm saying, some are decent. Like the hands holding the elephant - it's a fine work, but it's really nothing profound. It's like you have the skill to do what a high school art student wishes they could. Honestly, I feel like your choice of subject matter looks like you're struggling with yourself. This is not a good thing as some would want to argue (especially the lamebrains typical in youtube comment sections, except for mine), because the artist is only a medium. The expression of an artist is actually on the margins of the piece, in the abstract, and also in the choice of subject. Any aesthetic expression is the result of you working regardless of how precise you are. I also do realistic drawing and I know a problem for the artist is thinking that since the work is precise you must compensate in the subject by making the image inexplicable or weird somehow. This is a mistake. You are precise. Your subject matter should be precise. This will emphasize any messaging.
Consider, Picasso. Do you think he creates distortion because this is somehow expressive? No, he's finding the fastest way, for him, to go from point A to point B for his subject. Since your work is clearly not this, you need to be considerate of your journey, which in this case, is your medium. So, a precise subject is really warranted for precise work (there are caveats to this, but I still don't think you could make that argument about your work). I mean, a viewer should feel the distinct message, and it should feel like words in their brain with no words.
