As a self taught artist i can safely say "relax your mind and go with the flow" really works. You can actually feel a drawing, no need to overthink things and also what a nice chilling explanation. Beautiful presentation! 👍🏻
This video was extremely helpful to understanding the difference between papers and what kind of results one can get. Seriously I watched lots of videos of people talking about the paper and not providing this info! Thank you, brill.
What you said at 10:40, about letting go of the mind and thinking… my art teacher from long ago always told me: “Draw what you see, not what you THINK you see.” She told me that at age 5, and I still remember that to this day. Art is like music: you just have to let go and let your artistic energy flow out of you!
This actually is the corner stone of my work, without connecting to just being in the heart I could not draw a thing. I find the work just happens to draw itself the more I keep the mind out of the way. Thank you so much for watching... all the very best. 🙏
Nice video. Interesting comment about the energy of the person. It's always something special to draw someone, trying to figure out who's behind those eyes.
I love my mono erasers, I've bought 5 and have them scattered through my different supplies so it's always at hand. I can't conceive of drawing a portrait without it. I'm working my way through your pastel and graphite videos, such a wealth of information! Never too old to learn, thankfully.😆 I'm ordering this smooth paper today, I've used and loved the Bristol vellum for many years for my graphite portraits, excited to try the smooth.
I did the same I have about 4... of them for each medium. Brilliant tool, I truly would be lost without it for my graphite work. I'm 61 and learn something new every day. That's what I love about art we never get bored. The smooth is a beautiful paper for sure... all the very best... thanks for watching my videos! 🙏😊
This is the first video I've watched of yours Dave, what a lovely way of explaining everything to the viewers. Clear, concise, and spoken softly that resonates with the viewer. I found this highly informative, and I certainly learned a thing or two here. I'll be watching a lot more of your content in the next few days. I really liked how you also suggested letting your heart take over and less thinking, this is something many artists struggle with and they feel like they are battling the drawing, instead of letting their creative side flow freely. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this video Dave, this was very helpful. I have been using Strathmore Drawing paper but have been recommended Bristol by my mentor and was doing research on what to buy for pencil work. I have run into times the Drawing paper gets fragile if you have to remedy errors and it gets to be a slippery slope. (And the monozero is a FAVORITE tool of mine!)
Glad it was helpful Julie! Strathmore is a great brand... I would recommend using the Faber Castell kneadable eraser as this is an amazing way to lift off graphite without damaging the paper. Mono zero eraser is an amazing tool too, It makes all the difference. Thanks for watching... much appreciated. 🙏😊

@@DavePortersArt thank you and I shall try this and let you know thank you and you’re welcome my friend . Feel free to checkout my channel it’ll be great to have you ..
If you are new to graphite realism I would start with the velum but as you progress go to the bristol smooth. You will learn how to add the textures with experience. And you will learn how to get rich blacks with the smooth as well.
Exactly what I needed to know. Your explanations helped me get some piece of mind about how to approach this paper. I typically use smooth but I often struggle getting my tones dark enough. Looks like this might be just the paper I've been dreaming of.
I spent a small fortune over the years trying different paper and was quiet frustrated at time to put it mildly 🤣. I love Strathmore it is awesome magical stuff to work on. All the very best 🙏😊
Excellant! I'm a fellow artist. Your work very excellant. I'm using Canson Universal Sketch lately. I like Strath. But in Europe I used Canson at Cranley Gardens. No I am not wealthy, my mother simply wanted me to see the world after high school. I'm struggling right now too. I. Learned of. A new technique last night. You take an old sock fill it with charcoal dust then lightly pounce the ground. Then you dig out the highlights with eraser. This technique keeps the charcoal from going too dark too soon. I like a needle sharp pencil. Ordinarily I have a heavy hand and tend to overwork my drawings so the pencil for me must be built up incredibly slow. I am teaching myself to hold the transom of the pencil instead of chocking up on the tip. Try soaking a select group of your pencils in Ronsonol. This will liberate the grease binder from the graphite of your lead. Then you can really draw hair. Use the ronson lighter fuel outside and be careful of ignition from sparks etc. The fumes will drive you bonkers but leave the woodcased pencils in there about one to three months. Pull them out and let them air outside in a safe place. I learned about this by trial and error. Originally the process was kerosene on a paper towel or newspaper then wrapped in aluminum foil. Fir several months. I read that Avraham Lincoln may have used this technique. I don't use this technique too often because if the fumes, but it really makes an ordinary pencil perform. I'm using boiled linseed oil currently off and on to avoid the fumes. The Bronson gives the best hair drawings. Good luck, hope I've been of some help. That's what I draw too... beautiful women. Thank you for the comparison between Bristol and vellum finishes. Much appreciated.
Finally a clear answer on vellum v. smooth card stock paper. I’m a color enthusiast and the vellum I use is too grainy for my techniques. My mother was a self-taught painter so I guess it rubbed off on me a bit 😊
Depends on the texture of the skin. If the pic has more texture then vellum paper is needed. Some pics have few texture. In that case smooth paper should be used. One should realize the pattern of texture of face & choose paper in that way.
Yes that is a consideration to bare in mind... it is weighing up whether you also require a dramatic high contrast image too. It's a case of choosing based on the feeling you wish to portray. Thanks for the comment 👍🙏
I don't really think it matters. It's all preference. I myself have been a hyoerrealism artist for 18 years. I only use bristol smooth. I create all the texture the reference photo has with my pencil and erasers. I would say use the Velum if you are new to graphite drawing and once you progress switch to the bristol smooth. The only paper i would use that's not Bristol smooth as a hyperrealistic artist would be Hahnemuhle nostalge paper
I’m not working on a person, BUT along with finding out about the different papers (both look amazing, just different) I heard the magic words that totally unlocked why I was stumped on a rather large shell 🐚 I’m drawing… even if the photo has a lot of white, I need to pick a spot for my brightness highlight (center) and use degrees of shading everywhere else. Oh my gosh….my shell is practically jumping off the page now… (water soluble graphite on hp paper) very similar to smooth…
You are welcome Jane...I have spent a small fortune trying different papers over the years. I had the perfect paper in my teens, but can I remember what brand it was. Still the I am happy with the Strathmore for sure. 😊🙏
This was very helpful, I bought the Bristol vellum but have been saving it until my skill get a bit better, just observing you draw is already helping me out. Thank you for a wonderful video...I have subscribed.
I just wanted to know what the difference in paper happens to be. But I appreciate all your other info. So vellum requires layers and lighter pencils. Thanks again
The difference is one is smooth and one has a texture and tooth. The Vellum (textured) paper would need to start the outline with a lighter pencil. You are welcome... all the very best. 🙏
This is so helpful. While I am searching for the right charcoal drawing paper, this graphite demonstration was extremely informative. As art students (long ago, haha), we were not encouraged to blend with stumps or fngers. We were taught to blend with the pencils themselves. Nice to see someone else using that technique. Thank you!
I have tried blending with stumps, it made the drawing look not as natural and alive as blending pencil over pencil, so stuck to what I prefer... All the very best with your art journey. 💕🙏
@@DavePortersArt Thank you so much! And yes, I agree that the stumps give a bit of a lifeless, almost plastic look to skin especially. The pencil hatching technique depicts a sort of vibration, giving it more life. ☺
Thanks for this it was the best explanation of the different papers and their advantages and disadvantages I've found. As a complete newbie to drawing the astounding range of papers available at the local art shop bewildered me they all said they good for pencil so how would I know which one would be best for me? I left empty handed. This really cleared things up for me and helped me decide. My style is semi-realistic more towards the cartoonist side so skin texture or dynamics isn't really much of an issue for me. I also own a lot of expensive bush pens for calligraphy which really do require smooth paper so my choice is easy. Thanks this was exactly what I needed.
Thank you so much Claire for taking the time to comment and give such great feedback... Always good to know that my videos come accross well. I learnt the hard way... spent a small fortune on different brands of paper... I too couldn't find any video that answered my concerns. This brand is amazing love Strathmore papers. Dave your work is beautiful. Thank you so much for the video. It's super helpful. I can't wait for the beginning of the month so I can join your patreon....just a few more days! 👍
Interesting video Dave ..I have been searching good quality paper for doing architectural/landscape type drawings using graphite pencil. The paper as you know, is so important , I have arrived at the Strathmore Bristol vellum you are using, I am also going to give there 500 premium vellum a go as well.
I don't like drawing on smooth papers, for my light construct it seems less forgiving. It makes the construct somehow more challenging and the contrast request more pressure on the pen. I honestly can see what benefit it has for portraits since pencils have already a reduced contrast compared to charcoal.
Thanks for taking the time to give your feedback, each paper has is positive and negative qualities. I enjoyed doing this study it was very interesting to see the difference. All the very best 🙏😊
So you never use a blending stub? Or any blending tool? Reason I ask is I've done a couple automotive drawings and used blending tools. Have used smooth on a smaller car drawing but used vellum on a big truck drawing because it was the only paper I had that big. But next I have another truck to do and then a couple portrait. Really injoyed the video but just wondered about the blending. Thanks.
Hi Chris, thanks for the message. I like to create my own texture by cross hatching etc. rather than blending I feel it keeps everything nice and fresh and alive in a loose sort of way. Thrilled you enjoyed my video... all the very best with your future portraits. 🙏🙏
Hello David. I respect your work so much and was wondering what paper you’d recommend for a coloured pencil drawing that I’d use Zest It blender on? I have my first serious commission and want to get it just right!!
I tend to focus on pastels... but I do know some top artists in the field of coloured pencils use the Strathmore Smooth.... and their work is amazing. 👍🙏
Very informative! I would really appreciate a video on using Stonehenge Legion 250gsm paper with charcoal. I’m used to Strathmore charcoal paper and I am currently trying the legion but trying to get the blending technique down is difficult. I’m used to blending with brushes and some tortillions which work effortlessly on the charcoal paper, but not the legion. Can you offer any suggestions? Thanks!

Fantastic video..thanks so much
You are welcome Dave... thanks for the great feedback and watching the video. All the very best 🙏💕
Great video. Thank you.
You are welcome, thanks for the feedback and watching 😊🙏
You will find it a real joy to work on for sure. 🙏🙏
Thank you, from Australia

Thank you... glad you found value in the video. ☺🙏
That is amazing you don’t use smudging tools just using the pencils and both look amazing
Thank you... I like to create the texture with using pencil over pencil... appreciate the kind words 💕🙏
@@DavePortersArt I will try this! so many artists use graphite powder but I see this is the way it supposed to be.
@@sageartchannel3363 There is no right or wrong way 🙏 for me pencil over pencil creates freshness and aliveness. Just see which you prefer when you try this method. 😊🙏

Amazing work! What paper would you say is the best for scanning drawings?
Thank you... not experienced enough with scanning, sorry, cant really give you any tips. 🙏
@@DavePortersArt Thanks :)
Interesting video Dave ..I have been searching good quality paper for doing architectural/landscape type drawings using graphite pencil. The paper as you know, is so important , I have arrived at the Strathmore Bristol vellum you are using, I am also going to give there 500 premium vellum a go as well.
Glad it was helpful! thanks for taking the time to comment, all the best. 🙏
At your recommendation, I bought a large sheet of Clairefontaine pastelmat dark gray. However, the color has a lot of purple in it.
Is that normal?
...it could look a bit purplish in some lights... just check outside in north light. As in natural daylight it is definitely dark grey
Would you recommend using vellum Bristol when rubber cementing Bristol on black 12:08 board Paper?
New here. Thank you. That is all
You are welcome 🙏
Which is best sheet Strathmore 300 series smooth or vellum papers
I personally love the feel of the smooth paper, it is easier to use. 😊🙏
The Vellum one girl is looking at you!
She follow me around my studio when I was creating the comparison. lol 🙏
what are your recommendation for paper on hyper realism art???
Both are good... Fabriano is good paper too. Best to check with artist that create hyper realism. Try Instagram too. 😊🙏
Very beautiful
Thank you! Cheers! 🙏
Thx!
You are welcome 😊
Nice.
Cheers 🙏
Very informative! I would really appreciate a video on using Stonehenge Legion 250gsm paper with charcoal. I’m used to Strathmore charcoal paper and I am currently trying the legion but trying to get the blending technique down is difficult. I’m used to blending with brushes and some tortillions which work effortlessly on the charcoal paper, but not the legion. Can you offer any suggestions? Thanks!
Hi there, thanks for watching the video, I have not really focused enough on Charcoal, so really can't offer any suggestions. All the very best with your art journey! 🙏🙏
Which of these papers are more suitable for charcoal drawing? Thank you in advance.
The Vellum would be better because it has a tooth to the paper which will hold the charcoal.
Just discovered Dave Porter art and I think it's wonderful..💖💖💖 thank you so much for these videos. I'm working in colored pencil and trying to figure out the best paper and love this video but it applies more to graphite ...so I'm going to have to experiment more. Does anyone have any opinions here about which paper they like for colour pencil?
Hi Gianna, thanks for the kind words... you are welcome. To answer your question... I know of some amazing artists that use the Strsthmore smooth version for coloured pencils. I would suggest starting with that one. All the very best with your art journey 💕 🙏
@@DavePortersArt thanks so much for your kind answer! You're a great teacher. I see that you're responding to many of the comments here unlike other TH-camrs. That is very generous of you.. I have subscribed and believe i will learn a lot from you. Thanks again and many blessings.

Please check out the description below this video I list them all with links... thanks for watching 🙏
Do you do coloured pencils ?
I focus on Pastel pencils🙏
Hi. How can I watch this in slow motion so I can really see?
Hi Tammy... there is a settings icon under the video which will show after the adverts... it looks like a cog. Click on it and selected play back speed which will give you a selection of slow motion settings. It will make me sound like I'm drunk though 🤣 so best to turn the sound off 😁 🙏🙏
GOD BLESS YOU!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH Dory! 🙏🙏
