  • Students were given word problems with a partner and asked to underline the important information that would be used to create an equation. Students then matched the word problem with its correct equation. Students then labeled each part of the equation with information from the word problem. Students then solved each equation and interpreted the solution in terms of the problem.

She obviously puts an emphasis on her students using accurate math vocabulary and her students being able to articulate each step in the process and WHY they should do each step. I love that! She’s really prepared her students academically and she seems to have a really consistent classroom management and homework system.
I also like that she addresses her students by name. There’s no question regarding which student she’s referring to.
Lastly, I love the “off-the-book” lesson they’re participating in. They’re learning to apply the concept along with critical thinking skills!
Oh! One more! I love that she allows her students to respectfully challenge her. She heard the student out and responded respectfully in kind.

I love this! I am using this as part of my practicum/observation hours for my Master’s degree. I have so many good notes and can connect this to many things I’ve learned. Thank you!

Yo, to any students out here watching this video for a class, you might wanna take note of the fact that, at least for me, the kids in this video are as old as you are now. I was 13 when this was uploaded. I was in 8th grade myself!
    Man time flies.

I love how she means business yet you feel the love and care she has for all her students, even the ones she had to "check" when they weren't on task. She is good at attending to each group while being aware of what's happening in the rest of the class.

She is an excellent teacher. This kind of teaching does not just pop up for an observation-- it has to be routine and I can see she is in her regular teaching zone.
I've been teaching mathematics for 33 years. Believe me, I have made a few mistakes. (lol).
Hopefully, she realized it, went back, apologized for the error to the entire class and NIck, praised Nick for it, and they moved right along. That's how I handle it and we often giggle that the teacher makes mistakes too. It is a GREAT teachable moment; no one is exempt from making mistakes. Mistakes happen, we must take personal responsibility for them, make any corrections necessary, and move forward in a positive direction. This does not make us perfect but does make us better people.
In my classes, we strive for excellence, not perfection...including the teacher. :)

I went back t re-listen as I thought afterward that perhaps I had missed something. Nick was wrong. As the teacher stated, he rounded. The actual rational answer for 16/-7 = -2.285714 (by the way 0.285714 is a very common repeating decimal fraction portion).
However, to be fair, the answer is also not -2.28. It has to be -2.285714 to = -2 2/7.
      -2.28 = -2 28/100 (apply GCF of 4 to simplify) = -2 7/25, which is incorrect as well.

If you plug that answer in for x it won't come out clean. I would've just left it as an improper fraction lol

Clearly you didn’t hear what she said. She explained exactly why, multiple times, she wasn’t okay with that answer. It had nothing to do with Nick being wrong.
