    I have severe ADHD and 💯 agree with you! My environment makes such a difference in how I function. If it’s a cluttered mess then I will just clean nonstop. In order to stop doing that and actually do things that matter I had to become VERY minimalist. It has made a huge difference. Now I can read in peace and go for walks without the burden of thinking about what needs to be done at the house. I am able to focus and finish tasks. This is huge for those of us with this problem.

    Yesterday I was in the mood to go through my college stuff to tidy, throw out, or donate everything. I graduated in 2003 so evidently everything was precious historic documents until yesterday.
    Then I did every task on my silent to do list. I swear taking care of that silent list is life changing!!
    Thank you!!

      When I was in college I had a bin of my “memories” in my grandma’s basement and I’d look through it every time I was home for a holiday or weekend. It was treasure and meant so much to me (I thought), and I couldn’t imagine parting with any of it. Fast forward a few years and a couple of kids and we’re trying to pack up to move and I go through the bin for the first time in a while…so much of it was just garbage. 😂 I got rid of almost everything and it felt SO GOOD to not move that bin to the new house.

    I started decluttering and becoming minimalistic about the same time as you. I didn't know that's what it was and didn't find you until a year ago to my regret. So I watched your past videos like a bobblehead, nodding at everything! Now the past year, your videos are so helpful because I get a little disappointed sometimes that it still needs work but then one of your videos pops up, you show real life, and I'm like, "ok, it's just normal, this is how you deal" Thank you for that!

    I don't blame you for throwing things out - sometimes you just need to give yourself that permission! But this past year, I learned about a website TerraCycle which has all sorts of recycling programs (which makes me feel better since I don't have much recycling in my area). One of their programs is through Colgate, which recycles any brand toothpaste tube, toothbrushes, empty floss containers, etc. You package them up, download & print a label with free shipping & drop it off at a UPS shipper!

    I agree about the cheap stuff. The thrift store doesn’t want to waste their time on the cheap stuff either. It took me a while to get this thru my head.

    • @HannahRainbow88
      @HannahRainbow88 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yep, thrift/charity shop staff tend to be volunteers, spending their time wading through what is actually sellable vs all the stuff that should've been recycled/trash. 🤦‍♀️ It really takes away from all the good work they (can) do with the time and space they have.

      Sounds like a convenient excuse to throw things away rather than recycling/reusing/donating. I've shopped thrift stores for years, and there are always bins of small plastic containers offered for sale. I watched Dawn years ago and was put off by her wasteful decisions and lack of environmental responsibility...it seems nothing has changed :/

    • @stephaniesecrets6154
      @stephaniesecrets6154 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I disagree - items have a cost beyond their cash value. All those cheap little things add up to a lot of resources consumed and a lot of waste. I'd rather buy a little container like the one thrown away in this video from a charity shop than buy new, even if there is little or no difference in price. Despite living in a much smaller home than many, I find space for my 'Out Bin' where I store things I want to get out of my home until I can donate them. I'll take my donation to somewhere I've seen similar items on their shelves, hopefully minimising the chance of it being thrown away after donation. I understand if someone is overwhelmed by clutter and needs to make the easiest decision for their mental or physical wellbeing, but that is not the case for most of us - most of us can make space for these small items until we have a bagful to donate or otherwise give away. We are responsible for the items in our possession and how we choose to dispose of them once their use to us is over. Things don't disappear once the rubbish is collected.

    I always go through and do a whole house declutter about a week or 2 before Christmas. We've been living more minimally for about 7 or 8 years now and I declutter 2 or 3 times a year to keep it maintained but one of those times is always right before Christmas. I know with all the gifts from us to each other and from friends and family i have to move things out to make room for the new.
    My mom has already told me she is buying a season pass for our family. Idk what it's called but she got it for a zoo in Tennessee but it also gets you free or extremely discounted tickets to 35 or 36 other places in a bunch of different states. We obviously wont visit all the places but we can go to several for sure. So basically she's giving us a year of experiences ❤. I love it

    We have a box on a pole at our library where anyone can put stuff to give away for free. It says,”Take what you need. Give what you can.” We take all kinds of things there and it’s gone quickly. I really love it. So much better than taking it to our thrift stores tho there is nothing wrong with that. With prices the way they are I really want folks not to have to pay for whatever I can give. Blessings, Val 🥰🥰

    I’m lucky that my neighborhood has a Salvation Army drop box right in our apartment complex. I can also leave bags of items next to the dumpster and they’re always picked up by a neighbor within an hour. Both help with declutter frequently. We actually found a great pair of steel toe work boots for my husband that way! They were left by the dumpster along with other good items someone didn’t want to take with them on a move. So it’s a great way to declutter and be frugal. A win win for everyone lol

The reason people dont do things the way I want them to or the way I would do things for others, is because they aren't me!!!! That thought never dawned on me before!!!! When deciding to donate something (for example the blue container you got from the dollar store), the reason to donate isn't always about donating something amazing, its also about keeping stuff out of landfill. I may not go to the op shop (thift shop) to specifically buy that item, but if i see it and need it i'll think thats great, will save me from buying a new one.

    • @flynn1a
      @flynn1a ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This may not be true in your area, but where I live, Goodwill sends truckloads of stuff to the landfill - stuff that’s not actually sellable or so cheap that it’s not worth the effort to mess with it. So we need to be realistic about what we kick down the road for someone else to deal with.

    • @valeriereneeharper
      @valeriereneeharper ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An extreme amount of donated goods end up in landfills or even shipped to less fortunate islands for locals to pick out any usable items from trash items, most of which the locals deem as unusable/trash and it stays in a dumping ground on that island.

    • @elizabethsokol2545

      We have a swap shop at our recycling center where you can pick up stuff for free. That blue comtainer would be gone fairly quickly.

    • @flynn1a
      @flynn1a ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@elizabethsokol2545 I’m so curious how your town/city is able to make this work. I live in a city of 170,000 people. For a short time we had a swap shop for just sewing/art/crafting/school supplies and even on that limited of a scale, it could not be sustained. However, there is a VERY small shop at the landfill where you can recycle cans of paint. I think that works because a very small number of people do actually know or remember it’s there, but that small number who actually take advantage of the free paint keep that much out of the annual hazardous waste drop off.

    • @elizabethsokol2545
      @elizabethsokol2545 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@flynn1a The next town over started a "swap shop" at the dump by opening a shed, staffed with volunteers, that accepts used items "too good" to throw out. They have a variety of items ranging from kids toys, books and movies to household items. A volunteer stated in a 2021 article that the "swap shop" saves the town $200,000 in waste disposal.
      My town received a grant to build a shed for our "swap shop" at our recycling center and is staffed by volunteers. They have everything: cds, dvds, picture frames, christmas ornaments, cards, school supplies, craft supplies, toys, records, dishes, art and even furniture. If stuff doesn't move in about 2 weeks, they have to make room but good stuff goes quickly.. It is really useful for finding or donating items like the plastic case in the video, but the hours are limited to 2 hours per day, twice a week. We also have anothet shed for our "book exchange".
      For specific items, I try to find organizations that can use them. For example, I donated plastic flower pots to a park with a gardening program. Most recently, I had small box of items that I thought could be used for crafting and found a gift shop that works with autistic kids that said they can use it. I also found a church that told me that they don't throw out their rummage sale donations but save them for tbe next year. They have found what doesn't sell one year, will often sell the next. They also give away free stuff at the end of the sale.
      Hope this helps.

    Great video as always. Yes regarding acknowledging what you've accomplished. I recently was getting down on myself for not getting anything done,,,then I started writing down everything I did complete in my normal day. It was an eye opener for me to see how much I do get done around the house, and just never give myself credit for. The bigger eye opener was my family can also see what is getting done around the and not by magic fairies. I'm not saying this as a put down on my family, cuz I so enjoy doing these house items. But when I'm feeling overwhelmed, it's easier for me to know that I need to ask for help, as well as when I look back at the list it also helps me to see what items are at a point that I can now hand that over to someone else to manage. This really helps during up and down seasons, tax time, holidays, etc when time just seems to get shorter everyday. Thanks again.
