I've been playing for over 40 years and its easy to get stuck in ruts all the time. These are really great tips. You taught an old dog some new tricks. Thank you.

One of the first videos I've seen about improving fills that has very applicable advice. Most videos with suggestions are just really weird or have specific fills to try out, but this one has very interesting ideas that have great applications. Thanks for posting this!

I have to agree, actual concepts for fills instead of "just play this". Also actually calling a rudiment for what it is makes those of is in the music education field all kinds of happy.

I have watched a lot of your video's,but as a self thought Drummer of 20 years and being in a family of drummers, my Da, Brother, myself and now my 12 year-old son has me giving him lessons in the garage and has seemed to come almost naturally. It's only now that I am learning to read sheet stuff, but I did spend years on my rudiments that has stood to me. So my point is that when I was younger I got a Pearl world series, after a lot of giging and saving. The 20"bass, 8",10",12" rack toms and 14" floor, and beautiful 12"piccalo,and when you talk about taking things away that is just what I did. I now use, bass,12"rack,snare and floor, and that made me a better drummer,I think. Nice video

These are good pointers. I think that I would add, "Don't be afraid to throw in the occasional odd fill". I typically play symphonic/progressive rock, so one thing that I do, every once in a while, of is incorporate odd fills (like a fill in 5 or 7) into a 4/4 passage. I've even done it with basic pop songs, in order to add a little flavor. I also would advise anyone to learn the song on hand percussion. This can change your perspective, give you new ideas for fills, and possibly help you change up the groove, altogether.

Nice tips. In my opinion dynamics are really important in drum fills, for example start with a silent press roll on snare drum and then move on to the tom drums. Also adding accents into fills make them way more interesting. This combined with the tips given in the video makes you fill better.
