      The spring represents the pent-up rage of the masses, accumulated within the society through oppression much like the way a spring accumulates the energy of compression.
      The spring, and the masses, must either release that energy in a controlled fashion - or the system built on the oppression of the masses will break down.

    I know this is a joke and all, but your interpretation is *basically* the canon plot of the Sonic cartoon and comic. Like, he is literally called a "freedom fighter", and at one point they *do* kill Robotnik. He is not the *only* Hedgehog left though.

    • @JackgarPrime
      @JackgarPrime 6 ปีที่แล้ว +342

      Not to be confused with the plot of the other Sonic cartoon, which is really just about a guy who wants a decent chilli dog. Except that time Robotnik collected all the chaos emeralds and turned into a gigantic, super muscular djinn.

      While the text of hbomberguy's videos is scripted and directed to be absurdist and surreal, he always presents his thesis directly so as to avoid misinterpretations through the uncritical lens of Poe's Law.
      In this specific video, he presents an honest, albeit absurdist and surreal, interpretation of the themes and motifs present in Sonic the Hedgehog. The comedy of the video is derived not from the central thesis of the video, that Sonic the Hedgehog thematically represents an anti-capitalist revolution, but rather, from the method by which hbomberguy presents his thesis, using obviously bad cosplay of him in naked, or semi-naked, undress and the 'camp' of his video direction which mirrors low budget productions such as early doctor who or the silver age horror genre's B-filmography.
      So, how he says things is a joke (the purpose of which I've yet to totally suss out (I think it's either a pointed criticism of the rampant intellectualism of academia, homage to some inspirational texts similar to the ones listed above, andor a reflection on what he thinks is funny by virtue of belonging to the internet culture where the chief forms of emergent humor are neoneo-dadaism and neo-nihilism; but it could be any, all, or none of these things)); but, what he is saying is a sincere critique.
      In conclusion, to answer your simple yes or no question: "yes, but.... no?"

      nah, most consider post-modernism dead after it flew straight into a building on 11 September 2001. After that, there are various cultural movements: post-post-modernism was short lived.
      We're currently what will probably be considered by historians to be about three major competing schools: contemporary futurism, resurgent neo-dadaism (or neoneodada if your hip), and neo-nihilism. hbomberguy's channel falls squarely with the neoneodadaists.

      Help my oppressor is rationalizing and minimizing my suffering with sarcasm. Fuck, it's just gas lighting in disguise. You know what's really traumatizing? When we realize that we rationalize all the things that we do to others and what we do to survive, in order to escape the unavoidable guilt associated with having to endlessly kill other life just to survive.
      It's like, we make our own hell for ourselves!

    • @EveryTimeV2
      @EveryTimeV2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Maybe that's what a pursuit of happiness really is at the core of the world. Maybe we're just hoping for a few moments of bliss amidst this landscape of absolute suffering, to make it more worth living. And as we get older we become desensitized to what brought us pleasure before - leading to us eventually losing more and more reasons to live anyway. At least until we reset our brains some day, so we can actually feel like anything's new again!
      And here's an interesting question I keep on asking myself every single day, is what I want really even going to make me happy or feel any better? Would I suddenly feel some sense of elation if I just woke up tomorrow and I never had to face the same problems as I had the day before? Would I feel terrified beyond my comprehension at the fact that my entire reality could just arbitrarily shift from that understanding I have of the world into another world? Doesn't that bring into question whether or not something stupendously powerful over me had to exist which could even do that kind of thing?
      Is that why people are always so defensive of the way that they think things are, because they think that they're safe from the world and that creeping realization that they're going to fucking die one day or someone might kill them? I don't know! Maybe it's just me! Maybe that's why I got diagnosed as having paranoid schizophrenia, because that is the very definition of a delusional belief that is characteristic of the condition! Because I really think people are out to get me!

    Mario = Vanguardist Revolution
    Sonic = Insurrectionist Anarchism

    • @doorhanger9317
      @doorhanger9317 5 ปีที่แล้ว +258

      Mario is simply a monarchist fighting against rival monarchist state
      while he may seek to end the oppression of his people by the koopas, they are still bound into feudalism under peach, and mario so isn't really revolutionary in this sense
      and while sonic is certainly insurrectionist, we don't really know his plans for a world without eggman
      he could be anarchist and even primitivist, but even though it seems more unlikely we can't rule out a more centralized economy, or even a merely tempered capitalistic society

    • @Gr3ypsTFT
      @Gr3ypsTFT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      @@doorhanger9317 Well if you look at the early levels you notice a strange sort of order which cannot be observed naturally. The loops for example are obviously not natural which implies he at least belonged to some sort of society which was able to majorly alter the landscape. Through this I doubt he came from primitivism or anarchism. Seeing as the imagery at the end of the game is similar to the start of the game they most likely returned to their original system. It does still beg the question what did they start with? Most likely the small animals are not equals to the anthropomorphic animals because they act as a background to Sonic. This could imply that Sonic as the focus of the game doesn't truly care about them that much. I would even hazard a guess that his society is truly an oligarchy where the anthropomorphic animals are the leaders and the small animals are working class. That would explain the focus on certain animals and their obviously higher strength, stronger character, and higher intelligence. As the leading class they would have access to better schools and necessities which leads to the differences.
      Edit: His title of The Hedgehog could come from him being the leader of the hedgehogs instead of him being the only hedgehog.

    Good video, but you missed something very important...
    So, as most of us with an interest in science are aware, the concepts of space and time are deeply linked (to the point where it is often considered, singularly, "spacetime"). This means that the faster you traverse physical space the slower you move temporally.
    You move faster, you live longer. So if you wish to extend your lifespan....
    You gotta go fast. Hedgehogs generally live short lives, but through excessive speed Sonic has managed to avoid this fate. He is *literally* running from his own mortality.

      Honestly, as a lifelong Sonic fan? I can safely say that satire or not, this... can function as a pretty legitimate reading of the game. And you know how I know? Check the Archie comics. Or Sonic SatAM. Hbomb set out to make an extreme artist's interpretation of the game beyond what the creators ever intended for a simple cartoon platformer, but sans any kind of authorial intent? This actually makes a shocking amount of sense even with the exaggerated lens of likening Sonic to Chaplin and violent revolutionaries - so much so, that actual canon continuities clued into his ideas about a decade before he had them.

    This was brilliant. One might be (not) surprised, but I have very similar thoughts about Sonic. I have audio tape recordings of me as a child talking about Sonic for literally hours (and I'm still doing it right now as a comment on a video of someone else taking this way too seriously holy shit what is wrong with me oh right I played Sonic while I was little and am still in existential freefall from it). There was embellishment here, though it wasn't massive and was mainly for comedic effect. The core of what you're asserting, I feel, is logically sound.
    My thoughts always centered around environmentalism - however, they reach about the same conclusion. The segment where you talked about level progression from the natural into the futuristic-yet-industrial horror show is what always had me on that. Your inference of metaphor from the progressively more repetitive level design of the first game is so clever - if only it could be reconned.
    The thing I must particularly say is so good is that you were able to take all of this abstract and make it tangible. The original Sonic series' lore is *entirely* abstract and *only* inferrable from context. There is no storytelling, even in "cutscenes" in the later titles, which only serve as vehicles to heighten the stakes with rising actions and to establish Knuckles as particularly proud that he trips up an outsider in any way - insular, much?
    Sonic is enviro/cyberpunk *as hell*. Capitalism is going to destroy everything that's good and empower the worst among us (he says as if it hasn't already happened). They will use (have used) that power to instill conformity by imprisoning our natural "soul" or "essence" in arbitrary bullshit we never actually said we needed. I've never been able to properly say - or even internally unify - all the things I've thought about the original series of games due to the overly abstract nature. You've went so far beyond doing that. This is excellence on every possible level.

    • @Hwd405
      @Hwd405 8 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      +Peter Coffin maybe the ultimate message behind why the newer Sonic games are so fucking terrible is that capitalism killed the series as well as everything else we love - I mean, that's probably not what it is at all and it's probably just down to bad programming but... you know, who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    The thing is the game was always sort of an eco-warrior, anti unchecked capitalism thing since it was a sentient animal versus a warmongering industrialist. It even talks abut how the Chaos Emeralds hold sacred power but are being turned into bombs etc. which does sound a lot like how western imperialism brings about apparently religious fueled terrorism. The SatAM show made some of these themes more blatant. In Sonic Adventure the theme was more about Provoking nature, I guess, as a sort of metaphor for Global Warming(fighting in a flooded city etc.). In Sonic Adventure 2 you're literally fighting the military, and the military's treatment of Dr. Gerald is responsible for the events of the game, and likely Robotnik being evil in the first place.
    Again we have the element of stealing/appropriating the sacred with Dr. Gerald using the Chaso Emeralds and culture of the Echidnas to try and create an "ultimate lifeform". Is he responsible for all the anthros existing? They never really delve into it but maybe.

So this means the first SLA wasnt presented by Hareton and thats why he is so confused and seemingly opposed to covering sonic 2 because he hasnt done sonic 1. Also the title is Serious Sonic Lore Analysis and not Serious Lore Analysis: Sonic the Hedgehog.
    Either this is the first SLA and Bomberguy was replaced by Hareton or this is a completely different series and maybe even reality.
