Its always sunny on TV was Rob's original idea for the show. Pretty much the same characters except, instead of owning a bar in Philly, they are all aspiring actors in Hollywood. FX thought that the show was not original enough.
My friend kept trying to get me to watch this show and I kept refusing but eventually he tricked me by inviting me on a boat and waiting till we were out there he basically forced me to watch it. He never actually said something would happen if I didn't but it felt implied.
I love how the theory of Charlie's idiocy is based on Mac and Dennis hitting him in the head and causing a hemorage, and not the fact that he was literally SHOT in the head the season prior.
@@greymarlowe4084 The whole purpose of buying a boat in the first place is to get the ladies nice and tipsy topside so they can take them to a nice, comfortable place below deck, and you know, they can't refuse... Because of the implication. Dude, think about it. She's out in the middle of nowhere with somebody she barely knows. You know, she looks around, and what does she see? Nothing but open ocean. "Ahhh, there's nowhere for me to run! What am I going to do, say no?" The implication🤨
6:46 I love the idea that day-man is supposed to be Charlie’s childhood idolized version of mac as he’s “master of karate and friendship for everyone” and Charlie wanted mac to play day-man and if Charlie associated his uncle with night I’d make sense he’d associate his friend with the day as thats when Charlie would see mac
my favorite theory is that; every epsidoe starts with a time stamp. the whole sunny crew is just in a police intergoation room recalling events. and youbknow they are no strangers to taking up loads of time while rambling on. this also explains why their characters seem to differ between episodes. ya charlie might be literate in this episode because he's telling the story and another charlie is brain dead because dennis views him as such
That’s how I interpreted it as well. Up until one episode Charlie tries to name their hijinks, which is the title of the episode. The gang unanimously agrees that it’s a dumb title and that it’s stupid to name what they do which is comedically cut off by the title card. Since Charlie is the only one who wanted the name, it seems to me like Charlie is documenting what the gang does. I personally think he’s innocently keeping a diary of what he does with his friends all day.
You mentioned that we see them as their ideal selves, but missed the SINGLE in-show reference to this. The high school reunion. They put together this big dance number, and it's great, until you see it from the eyes of everyone else there, where you realize it's terrible.
I loved that scene! I knew they couldn't be dancing that good! Lolol..then when they cut to Mac exhausted on Center Stage and Dee losing her balance, I thought " Yeah, that's about right.." 🤣
Well, how many of you sing and think u sound good, so you record urself, and listen back, and cringe. Well thats all it was, not a fightclub moment....lol
It’s hilarious listening to this after listening to the Sunny podcast, and realizing that you’ve put WAAAY more thought into these theories than the writers ever did.
As they tell us, would be my response. And yes, I watch the podcast too (full creep). These theories may be completely wrong, but if I could propose to you a brief suspension of disbelief, I don't see it as above their level of genius to casually dismiss things on the podcast that they actually have discussed - and perhaps even planned to use long term as an underlying guidepost for their writing - but don't feel inclined to disclose for the sake of the sanctity of the show
It's just another case of the question what is more important in art, intention or interpretation and as long as someone does not lay into extremes, claiming his interpretation is the author intention, consuming art by interpretation amd theories based only in the context of details in presented artwork is pretty fun hobby which keeps piece itself fresh and alive. Cult classic (pun intended) Evangelion is the best example where people are always analizing religious undertones of the anime while creator just liked the style of christian iconography. TL;DR Just let people have fun
It's Always Sunny on TV is a reference to the title that Glenn, Rob, and Charlie came up with in the very early stages of its conception. It was originally planned to be a show about 4 struggling actors in Hollywood trying to make it, but when it was picked up, the network told them that they had to pick a different city to set the show in and a different occupation for the characters. Therefore they changed the setting to Philadelphia and made the characters work at a bar. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was originally just a placeholder for the title until they came up with something better but they never did. To this day, the creators of the show still hate the title of their show.
@@spookie1024 we all do, but imagine being the writer, and having to change it, then you begrudgingly use the [Sunny in 'Philadelphia'], maybe with some unresolved feelings about creativity in mind. then that title sticks. ugh.
Yeah on the podcast they mentioned that "Jerks" was one of the alternate titles they had. They seem to genuinely have no idea why they chose Always Sunny in Philly over Jerks.
i like it because the show's title gives off such positive vibes, and then you watch it, and they're all terrible people. it's like that episode where they all wear the "life is good" tshirts. it feels ironic but not like they were trying for it to be, and hearing that it wasn't even the intended name of the show just further cements that
It's interesting how a few of these were debunked recently. Charlie's father has canonically been revealed in the new season and, on their new podcast, the writers/actors denied the Waitress is Nikki Potnick rumor. They also discuss on the podcast that the reason the gang gets more "cartoony" as time goes on is because they thought it was more fun to watch and more effectively got across the message that this show is satire and that these characters are actually awful people. They were aware of how much of a "clown baby" Charlie's character was turning into in season 2, and they consciously embraced it.
He literally shows in the video Dennis tweeted saying Nikki potnick isnt her name , and to watch the underage drinking episode , which I watched it and it’s not like that disproves the theory at all , all they say is they did something with her car , nothing confirming the waitress wasn’t her
@@gimmedaloot8168 What confirms that Nikki Potnick isn't the waitress's real name is the creators explicitly saying on their podcast that it isn't her real name but they think the fan theory is interesting.
@@gimmedaloot8168 well throughout the show for example in charlie and dee find love the waitress calls dennis and he doesn’t know who’s calling him until she says she’s the waitress which means that dennis doesn’t know her name and in dee sinks in a bog it’s also very clear that dee does not know the waitress’ name but they all very clearly remember nikki potnick and crashing her car in underage drinking a national concern and high school reunion and I’m pretty sure that the waitress would’ve said something to frank if he was wearing her name tag
@@defaultdamajaTo me, it still doesn’t make much sense. He would have still had to be able to read English to learn another language. You could assume that his mom read the English for him. However, I still find it weird that Bonnie would never admit to Charlie that Shelly is his father. She was willing to all but admit that Frank was probably his father. Kelly is a common last name, but it’s just weird.
I'm honestly so happy that Kaitlin Olson made the writers change Dees character. If it wasn't for her I don't think I'd love the show nearly as much. It's so refreshing to see a sitcom where the woman isn't just the motherly/housewife voice of reason type. It's really incredible to see a show this raunchy and crazy treat the female character the same way as the men in terms of writing. She gets to be just as disgusting, delusional, and downright evil as all the male characters. Really makes her seem like a natural part of the main cast instead of "the woman of the group" almost all sitcoms tend to have. Plus, if it wasn't for that change we would never have seen Kaitlins incredible comedic acting! She's probably my favorite actor in the show and favorite comedic actor period!
It would also be harder for me to believe she'd actually remain friends with her all this time. But her character being just as messed up and crazy as the rest of them it's like 'nah I get it.'
True, but they also handled it fairly well. There are a lot of instances where the writers simply make a female character stupid or insensitive just seemingly for the sake of breaking out of the "sensible female" cliché, even when it doesn't make sense. Leslie Knope from Parks & Rec in the early seasons for example. Some people liked her, but I found her a nightmare as a main character who is just a incredibly self-centred but also very shallow in thinking while she was surrounded by a lot more sensible and deep characters (essentially a Homer Simpson with higher ambitions). When they mellowed her out in that personality and then showed how her ambitions included a high level of dedication towards the people around her is when the show really came into it's own. If they had made Dee an exaggeration in one aspect like an all out pervert, or villain or idiot then it would've ruined. But what makes all the members of the gang interesting is even though they're all exaggerated and a little crazy they have the balance and diversity of actual people.
It’s a love/hate relationship with Dee. You hate her because of how annoying and vain she can be but you love that she’s in the gang and you get to see her
Refreshing? Elaine from Seinfeld did this a decade earlier. Mad about You --both took turns being neurotic, and of course I Love Lucy--I think Ricky was the voice of reason more often than not.
@@kippmorgan7143 Sex addiction. Sex addicts often have same sex encounters even if they aren’t bi because the other person doesn’t matter to them, they just want sex.
@diox8tony Not only did you reply to that comment several years after it was posted, you also felt the need to explain something that didn't need explaining to feel superior. He clearly understood that. It's just a funny scenario that they're on the same level
Kaitlin Olsen’s advice to the writers to “just write another funny character” is something I wish every TV writer would take to heart when writing female characters. Don’t define them just as women; they’re human beings, just as flawed or brilliant or dumb or heroic or funny or intelligent as any male character. Seriously. We’d get so much more nuance from female characters is every writer could understand this.
Problem is its unrealistic for the most part. Most women just arent funny and exciting. Also you get feminists complaining if women act too vulgar. The whole "woman as a voice of reason" (as per Simpsons etc) trope was invented by feminists who saw a world where men are stupid and women are superior
i think charlie actually IS a genius but thanks to all the shit that’s happened and damaged him he has become what he is today, clearly talented in music even if he doesn’t have the full capacities to make use of this, has the ability to plan to pretty impressive lengths, his problem solving skills have been shown time and time again even if they are downplayed massively
Learning to read doesn’t make ridiculous ideas like Kitten Mittons or Crow Milk any better. Dennis is the smartest, not perfect, but the smartest overall. Frank is a close second.
If I remember correctly, It's Always Sunny On TV was the title of the pilot of the show, which was then rewritten into the episode where Charlie has cancer
@@goop9539 I'm pretty sure they originally wanted it to be in LA and they'd be actors or something but the industry people thought it'd be better/more relatable if they owned a bar
Charlie’s illiteracy has always been consistent. He can read and write… barely, but he uses his “glyphs” when he writes something for himself, to organize his own personal thoughts and to keep them private. His music sheets, his dream journal… etc. all weird pictures and symbols and words mixed together, but when it’s for the gang or other people, he puts forth more effort, like the CharDeeMacDennis cards, bar notes… etc. So yeah, he’s always been the same level of illiterate, he just uses art to process his thoughts and feelings, he journals and writes and processes in a bizarre Charlie kinda way. Also ,I genuinely believe that Charlie is actually really smart, just in a different way. Learning instruments without sheet music, writing a pretty decent musical, running the bar almost entirely by himself, and being able to scheme and hustle to survive… he might not be book smart, but if you gave Charlie the proper job or opportunity I believe he would flourish and do a great and reliable job. I believe Frank even says at one point that the bar has never been late on payments, (short, but not late) Charlie juggles things in a chaotic dance to pass inspections and more.. he keeps all of the other useless freeloaders employed and able to dick off and do whatever because he does everything! I wish he could find a decent job, because I know he would do great without the gang holding him back.
I think the years of abuse both physical and drug and lack of education is really what makes Charlie so stupid and weird. If he'd had a good mother and a better upbringing I think he'd probably be a famous musician or at least pretty friggin smart.
tbh Charlie being a great practical worker, is the only reason the bar can be kept open. his competancy in his job keeps a balance compared to the others imcompetance
I feel like their descent into madness has been documented and portrayed pretty clearly in the show. I mean their constant head trauma, alcohol and drug use has is enough reason why they get consistently more insane. I mean at one point mac was painting with lead paint.
The thing with Dennis blowing himself is literally he says after Charlie's says "I might rule the world", Dennis says "yeah if that happens, I'll blow myself". Charlie did rule the "world" in the game. So that's just a hilarious pay off to a joke!
I'm sorry: Charlie is good at manipulation? You're going to have to expand on that idea, please. He's the slave of the bar, a puppet of Frank, and beyond ignored by the only woman he ever wanted, until resources and options ran out. Lol not that she ever really had any other options. I certainly admit that he can be quite clever, ingenious, and adaptive, but what causes you to believe he's an excellent manipulator? Sincerely curious.
Usually I don’t get much past the 3rd category on icebergs but being able to recognize almost every single one of these makes me happy as an always sunny enthusiast
About Dennis being ugly in reality, I always liked the theory that he is actually handsome… he just puts off such powerful creep vibes that it cancels out his looks. It’s kind of like his own personal hell, his own curse of sorts. He was blessed with good looks, but his awful personality literally pushes people away like flipped magnets. Whereas any other man with his appearance wouldn’t have any issues getting women to talk to them and sleep with them, women are basically repulsed by him from the moment they look at him. From his eyes that stare at them like meat, and have a deadness that belies the false mismatched and forced smile, his body posture that feels forceful and intimidating like he’s trying to trap or capture them, right up to the moment when he opens his mouth and sounds like a serial killer. He just sets off all kinds of alarms and his good looks are literally the only thing in his favor… if he was any less attractive women would literally run away screaming or call a friend for backup to get away, but he preys on shallow women who think “Well, he’s hot… hot people aren’t dangerous!” or women too dumb and blind to see the massive red flags!
Yeah, the theory he is ugly is really interesting, but I'm with you. I like it better that he is good looking but puts off malicious vibes. Plus, it makes more sense that the waitress was obsessed with him if he's attractive
One of the best parts about this show is that you think that there's only 1 bedroom for Frank and Charlie and charlie's been hiding a second bedroom this whole time
Dennis going down on himself in Charlie Rules The World is a payoff from his line right before the credits "Charlie rule the world? Yeah, if that happens, I'll blow myself."
Yep. I absolutely love the way that scene is made with Dennis' slight resistance too it mirroring his earlier conquest whom he entered "with almost no resistance". Also the fact that he's the Dennis blowing instead of getting blown is just another level of perfect.
@@tevezskeen he's definitely creeped out by Mac but he does show an understanding that other characters haven't like in the episode where Mac embraces who he is & his father walks off but Frank says he "gets it"
yea unfortunately not the case. it's actually in the script as Pepe Silva...Charlie Day just says it wrong in the show lol they debunked this theory on the Podcast
The most entertaining aspect of this show, to me, now, is that every actor is on the absolute verge of cracking up in every scene and all the actors are trying as hard as they can to keep it together/make everyone else go to pieces. Cool video :)
I think you missed something really obvious on the brain damage aspect Huffing inhalants causes all sorts of cognitive issues and Charlie has had a consistent glue huffing problem; at one point fairly far in Dee even says "you huff paint every single day" And in Flowers for Charlie we see that the Gang themselves aren't above inhalants they dive *right in* to huffing that gasoline so it seems pretty likely that they've done it before
yeah and in the christmas episode we see that charlie has been huffing glue since he was literally like five. if you huff glue and paint and other chemicals everyday for basically your whole life you'll DEFINITELY end up with brain damage lmao
Charlie work is the best episode of IASIP. I think it's the one time that we actually get to see the real Charlie and the rest of the time we're him through the gangs "filter" or how they perceive him to be
Yeah I kind of "headcanon" or whatever that he is always making things work in the background and that episode is the only time we get to see it. Yes he's unhinged and deranged, but he also knows how to do Charlie work
The podcast confirms that Niki Potnick is not the waitress. The joke they made is that the waitess is so forgettable that the school didnt even make a namecard for her
I love how he says the test was inconclusive just because their was too much random blood in the bucket, not because they went in and said “is Frank Charlie’s dad” without him giving any sort of sample and without the doctor having any idea who either of them are lmao
The It's Always Sunny on TV theory is basically that the show is a flashback from the very end of the show where the gang is either being interrogated by police or a court. The theory points to how each episode begins with a day, time, and location in a typewriter-style font that's never used elsewhere and how generally, a crime is committed in each episode. Some proponents even believe that the show will end with them either being interrogated or on the stand in their own defense. Some even say they may do a sort of meta, Dallas-style twist where they are actually the LA-based actors from the pilot, making a show about a bar in Philly where they routinely commit heinous crimes and that the show we see is a seasons-long flashback and we don't find out about this until the finale. Not saying I buy it, but it's interesting.
This was great, really well made. I will say though, that Charlie has slowly been giving himself brain damage since he was a child. Namely through huffing glue and paint, but it's also hard to believe that he avoided head trauma throughout adolescence. I also wondered if his reading ability and molestation might be somehow linked. If he was getting molested by his uncle during the ages you learn to read, and has succesfully repressed a lot of that period of his life, it seems to reason that they would be connected.
I always thought “The Nightman Cometh” was supposed to kinda represent Charlie defeating Dennis for the waitress. Look at Charlie’s original casting: Mac was supposed to play the little boy/ Dayman, and Dennis was supposed to play Nightman. And if the show went Charlie’s way, Dayman (Charlie) would have defeated Nightman(Dennis) for the princess (Waitress)
@@olbabybeard i didn't think it was supposed to be a rape scene, Frank just said boys hole and mac did what he wanted, and Charlie said they were ruining it
I believe Its Always Sunny on TV was meant to be the original title of the show. The original premise was the gang was supposed to be struggling actors in LA but they changed it to bar owners in Philly.
The producers pointed out to them, every struggling actor in LA comes up with the idea for a show about struggling actors in LA. So, they set it in a bar. And when deciding were the bar should be, since Rob McElhenney was from Philly, they set it in Philadelphia.
The process of choosing a name for the show is discussed in one of the first Always Sunny podcast episodes. One of the naming options is influenced by the A-ha song "The Sun Always Shines on T.V." but with the setting of Philadelphia replacing the abstract concept of television. The irony that it's not always sunny in Philadelphia also reflects the conceit that each episode of IASIP is intentionally dark and twisted, unlike the mood of most television sitcoms.
I like the false image theory but I don't think it necessarily holds up: 1. Mac looks fat when he gets fat and it's addressed by other characters even outside of the gang his weight and then weight loss. So they're clearly able to look differently than their ideals. 2. Just because Dennis is good looking doesn't mean women will always be throwing themselves at him, personality does effect things. But the biggest reason I disagree is that I think Dennis enjoys the manipulation more than the sex, this is how he prefers to pick up women. And his good looks help him get away with it. If someone less attractive did these things they'd be less successful
which we see in Dee Day when Dennis has no makeup on and tries to hit on that congresswoman or whatever their plan was that ep (I've only seen it once)
"It's Always Sunny on TV" is actually what they had planned for the show originally, as well as what it was to be called. Since all of the actors live in LA where the show is filmed, they had strongly considered making it about three hungry failures of actors trying their best in the city of angels. At some point, Rob McElhenny convinced Charlie and Glenn that his hometown of Philadelphia would make more sense for how they were writing the characters.
Just to fill in a bit, it was the network who didn't want the show to be set in LA as there were already too many shows/sitcoms that were played out in LA. Hence the need for a change to Philly.
@@Alataria999 Just to fill in a bit. On the extras for season 3? Rob claims it was he who decided to set it in Phili because that is where he was from, not the network. th-cam.com/video/J328SSYQOJs/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TheFIGclan
Glenn, Charlie, and Rob have stated that Pepe Silvia was not written as a misunderstanding of Pennsylvania by Charlie. It's an amazing and fortunate turn of luck, but it was not intentional. Lol maybe the character's mentalities have taken over the writing process.
Borderline Personality Disorder and sociopathy are NOT the same things, equating them can be genuinely dangerous. BPD has VERY different symptoms from ASPD, like almost opposite. Strong attachment to other people, intense relationships, intense anger, just intense feelings generally, and bouts of depression. Lumping in something like BPD with the serial killer stereotype Dennis embodies is incredibly harmful
literally paused the video to like & comment because you said, word-for-word, my exact feelings for the Episode "Charlie Work". It's one of my favorite episodes, because Charlie is my favorite character. Thank you!!!!
On the Dennis being bisexual point, don’t forget S1 E1 where Dennis clearly loves the attention he’s getting, albeit for tips too, and the bit at the very end. Also does anyone else think Dennis is responsible for the heads in the fridge in Mac is a serial killer? His reaction to them seems a little forced like as though he knew they were there all along and there was the hole ‘head in a freezer’ to symbolise the preservation of love in Chardee McDennis 2: Electric Bugaloo.
Idk that guy that owned that apartment was pretty suspect. The way he says “yeah” so assuringly and then corrects himself to “I guess” when Dee asks him if the shears will cut thru bone is kinda odd. I just think that guy really was the killer.
I started it's always sunny a couple years ago with only the knowledge that one of the characters was gay and one of them was a serial killer but not knowing which was which so the first episode threw me off a bit
"It's Always Sunny on TV" being at the bottom is so weird to me because, while you might not have known about it, the original title and premise for the show isn't exactly hard to find information. It's basically the same level as "Dee was supposed to be the voice of reason" EDIT: This popped into my head later, but that "the people we see on the screen are their ideal selves" thing is just a really bad theory. First, we have plenty of evidence of people finding Dee attractive from the popular guy in the reunion episode being the strongest evidence of this. Second, Dennis having to do schemes to get women to sleep with him has nothing to do with whether women find him attractive or not, it's that women won't just suddenly sleep with someone just because they're attractive. Not to mention that there are times where Dennis doesn't need to put in a crazy scheme and the amount of times he's not treated as attractive in universe are very limited. There's also the whole thing where it's based on the trope of ugly=bad person which isn't really something the show does anywhere else.
the thing is as well, in regards to dennis actually being attractive is that dennis is incredibly creepy lmao like just the way he speaks makes me feel unsafe
Also he is not scheming for sex. Sex is easy to get and boring. What he want is power. Power through love, fear and hatred. He wants to be in control. He wants them to submit. Every time they do it impowers him. It says all of this a thousand time.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Mac mentioning “browning out” in the Halloween episode when talking about the word “brown”. Also, with the MacDennis segment, you definitely should have brought up the fact that maybe then hooking up wasn’t consensual because of how it was described in “Times Up for the Gang”
Can we please have an updated version of this video with what we found out about Charlie when they go to Ireland? Especially about his family and with the Gaelic language
If you haven't seen their live show of The Nightman Cometh please look it up. They do amazing at re-enacting the show but add to it also in such perfect little ways. 10/10 show
Dude super stoked you mentioned MacDennis in this (and it wasn't that far down the iceberg lol) but shipping them most definitely was NOT a result of the JohnLock fandom. Or any fandom aside from the Sunny one. I don't know how much crossover their was between Sherlock fans and Sunny fans (I love sunny but i never watched sherlock). I know shipping is a big part of tumblr culture (ie: all of it) but really MacDennis came about from IASIP itself. Like if you look back on AO3, the first MacDen fic is written after the s5 ep Mac and Dennis Break Up. Tbh the MacDen ship is nothing more than the result of people having eyes. I guess on the surface it could look like there was a JohnLock to MacDen pipeline but really that's not the reason for the inception of MacDen. And the CharDee MacDennis thing, while a small part of something shippers refer to in the case for Canon MacDennis, it's really just...a fun coincidence people like the point to as "proof". Anyway. I know this wasn't a MacDennis centric video --and honestly that itself could be it's own iceberg haha. Appreciate the work you put into this as a huge Sunny fan myself! Totally gonna check out your other Sunny vids too!
Yeah, seems a really weird claim that macdennis shipping comes from johnlock. They're such different shows and such different characters, for one thing. And also, yeah, the reason macdennis exists as a ship is because the creators put it in the show.
@@nightmarevision7676 i feel like the term shipping is not being used in the conventional sense here, and I'm the only one who doesn't know the alt. meaning ?....
Charlie said he dodged uncle Jack actually. He says it once in an almost throwaway line that I refuse to hunt for. But yeah I think someone else got to him as a kid. Might even explain why he was so vigilant around Jack as a kid
I am always so surprised no one ever mentions Charlie's sister. He references her only one time in the final episode of season one at the very end when he is in the back seat driving back from his mother's home. I was certain it would be on the iceberg but I guess not. Great video BTW. Keep it up!!
Yes! It's one of the few continuity issues in the show. Although technically Charlie might still have a sister, everything outside of that episode points to him being an only child.
@@KatzePiano there is definitely more than a few continuity errors in the show. Basically everything about the gangs pre show life (IE:, child hood, high school, college etc) is one big continuity error. For example, when Dee applies for a job at the Oldie Rock Cafe the waitress asks her where she went to highschool. But it's later revealed They all (the gang and the waitress) went to highschool together though, so that makes no sense. Also Frank being potentially Charlie's dad (it's confirmed in the new season he isn't BTW) doesn't make a ton of sense either. Or at least him not knowing about Charlie being born doesn't as his kids were freinds with Charlie for most of their life.
@@AD-df5tm lol you found the one error , there isn’t much more if any , and it’s never said frank didn’t know Charlie was born , it’s just that he told his mom to get a abortion and he survived it , frank for all he knew didn’t know Charlie’s mom or figured she got knocked up shortly after from a diff guy , she was a prostitute .
I’m not sure what it means in reference to the iceberg but the creators said that “it’s always sunny on tv” was one of the names or alternate titles they had for the show
I think the reason Dennis "blows himself" during his time in sensory deprivation is a realisation that he is losing control over his world and the gang, as Charlie gains power over the others, something which Dennis has always taken pride in having. At the start of the episode he says in reference to Charlie suggesting he might rule the world, "Rule the world huh, if that happens i'll blow myself". In this case, Dennis blows himself as he questions his power over the gang and the world around him.
Personally I think when things are examined like this, although fun, it is connecting dots that are just coincidences of writers doing what they think will be funny. We want to try and find some meta to a thing we love, but ultimately it is just a meandering series of stories designed to keep people watching.
Yeah totally It's fun but only to be taken lightheartedly. Most of these theories (especially after S15) aren't canonically true But it's still fun (and hilarious) to imagine how things are
Dennis literally sleeps with two men in the very first episode of the show. Granted, he's black-out drunk, but idk what better evidence you could have for him not being straight! (That, and RCG confirming multiple times that the sexual tension between Mac and Dennis is deliberate - off the top of my head the audio commentary for Mac and Dennis Break Up is particularly clear on that point, and there's also a Conan interview somewhere with Glenn Howerton saying that all the characters are somewhat gay.) EDIT: Had to come back because I couldn't stop thinking about how I forgot to mention That Deleted Scene from Mac and Dennis Break Up. It may not have made it into the final cut, but listen to the words "beautiful lips" and tell me Dennis is straight.
i remembered when i used to believe in the theroy "nikki potnick = the waitress" until i remembered dennis knows who nikki potnick is and doesn't know who waitress is, and waitress told dennis and he didn't recognise the name until he said "oh you, just say waitress" in Charlie and Dee find love (s8 ep 4)
to be fair, they only remember who nicki potnick is in season 1, in season 7 'school reunion' dennis only says that nikki potnick is a girl, nothing more
I believe “It’s Always Sunny on TV” is referring to the original title and concept Rob McElhenney was proposing for Always Sunny, which was mostly the same, all the same characters, except they were struggling actors in LA, not bar owners in Philly. It could also be talking about more specifically the pilot of this, that I believe has never been fully recovered, but mostly just follows a lot of the season 1 plotlines (Mac dating a trans woman, Charlie faking cancer)
The process of choosing a name for the show is discussed in one of the first Always Sunny podcast episodes. One of the naming options is influenced by the A-ha song "The Sun Always Shines on T.V." but with the setting of Philadelphia replacing the abstract concept of television. The irony that it's not always sunny in Philadelphia also reflects the conceit that each episode of IASIP is intentionally dark and twisted, unlike the mood of most television sitcoms.
about browning out, there's also a episode where mac "creates" it, where he states that is not as bad as a black out, because you can remember a few things
It’s always sunny on TV is the title of the original pilot shot by Rob,Charlie and Glenn. It’s basically a first draft of the show where Mac, Charlie and Dennis are three out of work actors living in Hollywood. The plot of the episode is loosely based around the season 1 episode “Charlie has cancer” with one scene being recreated in the show. The name change and the characters career change was due to the network not wanting another show taking place in L.A. , so they moved it to philly where rob grew up. It’s a very interesting pilot to watch if you’re a fan of the show and I believe you can still watch it on TH-cam
I always figured Charlie’s uncle had issues with his hands because he thought there was something wrong with them because he’s always trying to touch people and they tell him not to and he simply doesn’t understand that people don’t want him to touch them

I figured it was because the people he touches with the big hands are small in comparison, like children...
For me the "always sunny on TV" referred to episode of the sitcom Taxi in which Louie de Palma (played by Danny DeVito) is seen watching something unseen on TV. During this sequence the song "temptation sensation" (later used as the theme song for always sunny) can be heard over the TV implying the existence of always sunny inside this sitcom from the late 70s
0 hate bc I feel like the show kinda got it wrong also, but in reference to Dennis being a psychopath and being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder … those things couldn’t be more different! People with BPD (including me!) struggle with emotional permanence, not an absence of emotions; in other words, we develop very strong connections with people, but then worry they no longer return those feelings the moment they are physically away from us or we aren’t receiving constant reassurance. This can be really distressing and it can sometimes feel like life and death if they are actually upset with you. Those with BPD are also prone to extreme ups and downs, and are generally highly emotional! It’s a really commonly misunderstood and misrepresented condition. Basically a long winded way of saying- if Dennis hadn’t felt emotions for years, he’s got the wrong diagnosis! 😅
As much as I love the Pepe Silvia theory it has been confirmed by the writers that it was not meant to be a misreading on Charlie’s part of Pennsylvania.
I have some additional entries to add to the iceberg: - There's a common theory that the entirety of the series is actually being told as a testimony in a court case against The Gang. The Gang are reciting several testimonies and are getting their facts mixed up, explaining why a majority of the episodes open with a date, time and location. It's Always Sunny is also heavily inspired by Seinfeld, even being called "Seinfeld on crack" by FX itself in promoting the show. It would be fitting that It's Always Sunny would end in a similar way to Seinfeld; having every character The Gang has interacted with testify against them in court. - The actor for Bruce Mathis was caught doing inappropriate things with minors. This is ironic as Dennis, Dee and Frank conspired to drag Bruce Mathis's name by saying he "diddled" kids. It's tragic that that would be true. - About two years ago, before Season 13 premiered, Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton both got into a spat on social media, with Rob even saying that Glenn was always a "bully" on set and that he's more similar to his Dennis character than a lot of people know. This controversy has seemingly buried itself, however. - Danny DeVito almost died during a stunt in the episode "The Gang Goes to Hell: Part 2," when The Gang are accepting their fate and holding hands underwater as the cruise ship sinks. According to Charlie Day Danny was lightweight enough to float to the top of the water and so they had to weigh him down to get him to stay within the scene. After the scene was shot however, Danny had difficulty getting out due to being weighed down and he almost drowned because of it. Supposedly the show will never attempt a stunt like that again, out of concern for Danny DeVito's safety. - The show was originally going to be called "It's Always Sunny on TV" and was going to be about a troupe of amateur actors trying to find work. The second name considered was "Jerks". - Sweet Dee was originally going to be played by Rob McElhenney's then-girlfriend in 2004 but due to both her poor acting and their subsequent breakup she never became Sweet Dee. - According to Rob Elhenney the series premise came to him in a dream where one man had cancer and his friend was too uncomfortable to really care. That dream inspired the premise of the test pilot and the episode "Charlie Gets Cancer".
I always cringe a little at yt videos that try to cover dennis' issues bc there's so much stigma around bpd and psycho- and socipaths that these words just get thrown around at random without first explaining what the symptoms/underlying issue(s)/definition is, and these people can't be bothered to do a bit of research before they make their videos.
Honestly, this makes tons of sense. You really only see Dennis’ soft side with Charlie, and if Dennis is a psychopath like we all know he is, manipulating Charlie who is ironically the most industrious of the gang and on occasion, even a kind of sweet guy, makes so much sense.
Im curious…why did Glenn Howerton say the proof the waitress’s name wasn’t Nikki Potnick was in the first 10 minutes of “Underage Drinking”? They only mention wrecking Nikki’s car.
presumably that's because since charlie is the one to mention nikki multiple times, and doesn't say anything about her being the waitress. also the waitress definitely would have mentioned at some point if the gang crashed her car in high school.
"It's always sunny on TV" was the name of the show before they changed it to Philadelphia, and the premise was that the gang were actually a bunch of struggling actors looking for work.
Something important the iceberg fails to mention is the fact Frank has some serious untreated disease - mentioned briefly in Being Frank (s11e6). Some claim the doctor even say explicitly it's a brain tumor in the frontal lobe, but it's very muffled. The episode also shows Frank has some obvious serious cognitive problems, but that could be explained by his age and the concussion he suffered a few episodes prior (in Frank Falls Out the Window - s11e2).
ive thought about this so much. and even the captions on hulu say "there is a malignant tumor on your front lobe". its also interesting that the gang goes to hell is also this same season where charlie talks about how theyre already dead.
About Night Man: while Uncle Jack is creepy as fuck and Charlie has had to fend him off, Charlie has explicitly stated that he was never molested (except by Dee). I think the Night Man is more the fears that sink into a person in the middle of the night. Charlie's dealing with a crappy childhood and a crappy current life, and when he's not awake enough to fill his life with enough chaos to avoid dealing in a healthy fashion, the dark thoughts creep in.
the fact he has to fend off Jack, who there are multiple references to being a paedo, imho makes him by far the most likely candidate. Then again it could just be a good song Charlie Day wrote and they decided to use in the show...
The IASIP podcast by Charlie, Rob and Glenn proved that Nikki Potnick isn’t the waitress. They said they weren’t smart enough to think about the consequences of Frank taking that name card. 🙃
Wow man incredible job on this vid, I'm so use to videos like these missing or not understanding certain things to the point you can tell that whoever wrote it was clearly not a fan but in this case it's clearly the opposite. You're clearly a big fan of the show and I think that helped to make this video great. Keep up the great work man!
ONE NOTE: bpd is not at all a disorder that implies a person has no morals or feelings. in fact bpd tends to cause people to feel things very intensely and are unable to regulate their extreme emotions. i always thought it was weird that they gave him THAT diagnosis of all the other personality disorders that are more fitting tbh
Funny that you describe Dennis perfectly through your description of borderline and then you say others are more fitting. Dennis is the poster boy of emotional instability, remember the big feelings rant, his rage fits? Sociopath my ass, he can only shut down his feelings when he disassociates (which is also the borderline symptom), but when that's done he's crying about his mummy again.
“It’s Always Sunny On Tv” was the original title of the show (inspired by a similarly named A-Ha song). The show was originally meant to be set in LA and be about 4 unsuccessful actors. They changed it because executives thought there were too many shows set in LA.
I made a screenshot background of charlie in front of the mail board and forgot it was there when a regional VP went to use my computer - he laughed and took a picture because he immediately knew what it was
With Charlie writing/using drawings, Is he not writing with words when he is writing for someone else to read and writing with pictures when it's for himself? i.e. the lyrics were for himself I think? So I guess he can write with words, but finds it very difficult, so if he is just writing for himself he would use pictures because it's easier for him to understand/write.
Awesome video dude! Wild that I never see on these icebergs any mention that Dee was originally played by a different actress who helped create the show’s pilot episodes before it was picked up by FX, and who was fired from the show after she broke up with Rob
I love the idea of every shipper coming from Sherlock… like Mac’s canonically in love with Dennis think some fans could of come to shipping on their own where does this Sherlock idea come from😂
i'm someone who's been into shipping for years and grew up with it and this man's explanation for the history of shipping is some of the worst shit I've ever heard 💀. Shipping mostly started with kirk and spock from star trek, same with the idea of fanfiction which is a major part of it (though fanfiction has kind of always been a thing, the divine comedy is literally a self-insert bible fanfiction). From there people expanded to other media and when they saw two people that they thought would/do work well together they 'ship' them and write fanfiction about them. Shipping in no way came from sherlock LMAO, though sherlock did somewhat bring it into the mainstream (along with shows like supernatural, doctor who, hannibal, etc.).
@@greysonholtz I was so damn confused when it got to the "shipping" part of the video. So it's just short for "relationshipping", like fans thinking it'd be cute if characters who don't date in the story actually did?
@@squall6789 sort of. Sometimes the relationship is actually present in the show/movie/book/etc but most of the time it's between two characters fans think would be interesting to imagine being romantically (or sexually) involved with each other. the term ship sort of started as a shortened version of relationship but now it's pretty much it's own word. my favorite theory is that; every epsidoe starts with a time stamp. the whole sunny crew is just in a police intergoation room recalling events. and youbknow they are no strangers to taking up loads of time while rambling on. this also explains why their characters seem to differ between episodes. ya charlie might be literate in this episode because he's telling the story and another charlie is brain dead because dennis views him as such
I love this

Dude holy shit yes
I found this theory utterly fascinating, and it really has strong legs. It’s very fight club, but that’s okay.
Also Mac does a similar thing at a hockey game

It's Always Sunny on TV is a reference to the title that Glenn, Rob, and Charlie came up with in the very early stages of its conception. It was originally planned to be a show about 4 struggling actors in Hollywood trying to make it, but when it was picked up, the network told them that they had to pick a different city to set the show in and a different occupation for the characters. Therefore they changed the setting to Philadelphia and made the characters work at a bar. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was originally just a placeholder for the title until they came up with something better but they never did. To this day, the creators of the show still hate the title of their show.
damn i actually love the title of the show lmao
@@spookie1024 we all do, but imagine being the writer, and having to change it, then you begrudgingly use the [Sunny in 'Philadelphia'], maybe with some unresolved feelings about creativity in mind. then that title sticks. ugh.
I haven't heard mention of them hating the name but I've heard them mention how it was funny how intentionally long it is.
S15 also explains Charlie's literacy problem, concerning with his pen pal...
I think Dee sucks lmao. She never gets a laugh out of me.

Also he figured out a way for spiders to talk to cats in that one episode. Lol
tbh Charlie being a great practical worker, is the only reason the bar can be kept open.
his competancy in his job keeps a balance compared to the others imcompetance

He just sets off all kinds of alarms and his good looks are literally the only thing in his favor… if he was any less attractive women would literally run away screaming or call a friend for backup to get away, but he preys on shallow women who think “Well, he’s hot… hot people aren’t dangerous!” or women too dumb and blind to see the massive red flags!

yea unfortunately not the case. it's actually in the script as Pepe Silva...Charlie Day just says it wrong in the show lol they debunked this theory on the Podcast
There IS NO Pennsylvania, it doesn't exist.
The most entertaining aspect of this show, to me, now, is that every actor is on the absolute verge of cracking up in every scene and all the actors are trying as hard as they can to keep it together/make everyone else go to pieces. Cool video :)
I think you missed something really obvious on the brain damage aspect
Huffing inhalants causes all sorts of cognitive issues and Charlie has had a consistent glue huffing problem; at one point fairly far in Dee even says "you huff paint every single day"
And in Flowers for Charlie we see that the Gang themselves aren't above inhalants they dive *right in* to huffing that gasoline so it seems pretty likely that they've done it before
Yeah. They're all completely deranged. Addicts and psychopaths lol... In the best way ♥️
also lets not forget the time when dennis shot charlie in the head
And in the Christmas episode we see when Charlie discovers his love for inhaling , while his mom got banged by the Santa’s , lol
yeah and in the christmas episode we see that charlie has been huffing glue since he was literally like five. if you huff glue and paint and other chemicals everyday for basically your whole life you'll DEFINITELY end up with brain damage lmao

Charlie work is the best episode of IASIP. I think it's the one time that we actually get to see the real Charlie and the rest of the time we're him through the gangs "filter" or how they perceive him to be
And glasses up for the sheer camera work in that episode. I don't want to know how much reset time was caused by blown takes.
Great episode, definitely not the best by a long shot.
Yeah I kind of "headcanon" or whatever that he is always making things work in the background and that episode is the only time we get to see it. Yes he's unhinged and deranged, but he also knows how to do Charlie work
Absolutely one of my favorites 🖤💀👻

MacDennis being linked to JohnLock is the funniest thing I've ever heard
I love how he says the test was inconclusive just because their was too much random blood in the bucket, not because they went in and said “is Frank Charlie’s dad” without him giving any sort of sample and without the doctor having any idea who either of them are lmao
One of the funniest parts in the whole show lmao
About Pepe Sylvia, the writers told they *wished* they have thought about that, but is just an internet theory
I like the warped perception theory, but I also love the idea that Dee and Denis are so horrendous that their good looks literally don't matter
Interesting, never really thought about it like that.
@@theKevatron @Bladeslair well...he still did that with the rape scene.

@@williampilling2168 and they get philly so right
At one point they were heavily considering just calling the Jerks
The process of choosing a name for the show is discussed in one of the first Always Sunny podcast episodes. One of the naming options is influenced by the A-ha song "The Sun Always Shines on T.V." but with the setting of Philadelphia replacing the abstract concept of television. The irony that it's not always sunny in Philadelphia also reflects the conceit that each episode of IASIP is intentionally dark and twisted, unlike the mood of most television sitcoms.
It's Always Sunny on TV also references The Sun Always Shines on TV, a 1985 song by a-Ha
I like the false image theory but I don't think it necessarily holds up:
Mac could have been even fatter than he was shown to be. Dennis said he put on at least 50 pounds. That gut was not 50 pounds. Source: have gut.
@@aelechkorob said he started at 160 and got up to 212 which is 52lbs

I think the head that Dennis sculpts in CharDee MacDennis 2 is his mother's head.

Glenn, Charlie, and Rob have stated that Pepe Silvia was not written as a misunderstanding of Pennsylvania by Charlie. It's an amazing and fortunate turn of luck, but it was not intentional.
Lol maybe the character's mentalities have taken over the writing process.
Their writing has become instinctual . They’ve been doing it a long time.
I think that happened a long time ago lol
Borderline Personality Disorder and sociopathy are NOT the same things, equating them can be genuinely dangerous. BPD has VERY different symptoms from ASPD, like almost opposite. Strong attachment to other people, intense relationships, intense anger, just intense feelings generally, and bouts of depression. Lumping in something like BPD with the serial killer stereotype Dennis embodies is incredibly harmful
Anime pfp? No thanks don't care
literally paused the video to like & comment because you said, word-for-word, my exact feelings for the Episode "Charlie Work".
Gary did it

"It's Always Sunny on TV" being at the bottom is so weird to me because, while you might not have known about it, the original title and premise for the show isn't exactly hard to find information. It's basically the same level as "Dee was supposed to be the voice of reason"
EDIT: This popped into my head later, but that "the people we see on the screen are their ideal selves" thing is just a really bad theory.
Or the The fact that Dennis looks like the registered sex offender
also chardee mcdennis 2 that 'executive' says she's an attractive woman. dude was hired by frank but idk if he'd say that randomly.
the thing is as well, in regards to dennis actually being attractive is that dennis is incredibly creepy lmao
like just the way he speaks makes me feel unsafe
Also he is not scheming for sex. Sex is easy to get and boring.
What he want is power. Power through love, fear and hatred.
He wants to be in control. He wants them to submit. Every time they do it impowers him.
It says all of this a thousand time.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Mac mentioning “browning out” in the Halloween episode when talking about the word “brown”. Also, with the MacDennis segment, you definitely should have brought up the fact that maybe then hooking up wasn’t consensual because of how it was described in “Times Up for the Gang”

Yeah that really threw me off, Johnlock is not the start of shipping culture, that series is just an unfortunate footnote...

I agree! I think about this all the time when I watch season 1
Honestly if they do bring that detail back up in an episode, it would be perfectly in character for Charlie to forget he even had a sister
someone needs to update the iceberg with "Charlie reads and speaks fluent Irish"

"Mac, Dee and Dennis aren't shown as their true selves" is a theory I really love. I hope this is true.
Personally I think when things are examined like this, although fun, it is connecting dots that are just coincidences of writers doing what they think will be funny. We want to try and find some meta to a thing we love, but ultimately it is just a meandering series of stories designed to keep people watching.
Yeah totally
It's fun but only to be taken lightheartedly.
Most of these theories (especially after S15) aren't canonically true
But it's still fun (and hilarious) to imagine how things are
Dennis literally sleeps with two men in the very first episode of the show. Granted, he's black-out drunk, but idk what better evidence you could have for him not being straight! (That, and RCG confirming multiple times that the sexual tension between Mac and Dennis is deliberate - off the top of my head the audio commentary for Mac and Dennis Break Up is particularly clear on that point, and there's also a Conan interview somewhere with Glenn Howerton saying that all the characters are somewhat gay.)
EDIT: Had to come back because I couldn't stop thinking about how I forgot to mention That Deleted Scene from Mac and Dennis Break Up.
I'd find it even funnier if he knows the waitress's name but refuses to call her it because he thinks it's funny
to be fair, they only remember who nicki potnick is in season 1, in season 7 'school reunion' dennis only says that nikki potnick is a girl, nothing more

I believe “It’s Always Sunny on TV” is referring to the original title and concept Rob McElhenney was proposing for Always Sunny, which was mostly the same, all the same characters, except they were struggling actors in LA, not bar owners in Philly. It could also be talking about more specifically the pilot of this, that I believe has never been fully recovered, but mostly just follows a lot of the season 1 plotlines (Mac dating a trans woman, Charlie faking cancer)

about browning out, there's also a episode where mac "creates" it, where he states that is not as bad as a black out, because you can remember a few things
It's Always sunny on TV was their first, or was it second, pilot that they made to show to producers before the show got greenlit.
For Charlie having brain damage I figured it was because he'd been huffing/sniffing glue since he was a child; as shown in their Christmas special.

Yeah, Mac even says he's upstairs, he's been asking where his mail is for weeks
I have some additional entries to add to the iceberg:
- There's a common theory that the entirety of the series is actually being told as a testimony in a court case against The Gang.
I am hoping you are trying to joke about the "spat" between Howerton and McElhenny
@@debarchan123 So it wasn't a real thing then? I figured that was why Glenn didn't show up as Dennis very often in the newest season.
borderline is not psychopath
antissocial (can be)
they are totally different mental illnesses
I always cringe a little at yt videos that try to cover dennis' issues bc there's so much stigma around bpd and psycho- and socipaths that these words just get thrown around at random without first explaining what the symptoms/underlying issue(s)/definition is, and these people can't be bothered to do a bit of research before they make their videos.
Seriously, it's not very hard to Google it for literally a couple of minutes and know that there's a difference
I think Dennis has always seen Charlie's potential and actively works against it
Honestly, this makes tons of sense.
Donkey brains.
Hot take: the nightman is one of his mom’s clients.
the fact he has to fend off Jack, who there are multiple references to being a paedo, imho makes him by far the most likely candidate.
I’m gonna tattoo Dennis wiping the bar saying “Alright, alright alright”

Funny that you describe Dennis perfectly through your description of borderline and then you say others are more fitting. Dennis is the poster boy of emotional instability, remember the big feelings rant, his rage fits? So I guess he can write with words, but finds it very difficult, so if he is just writing for himself he would use pictures because it's easier for him to understand/write.
Awesome video dude! Wild that I never see on these icebergs any mention that Dee was originally played by a different actress who helped create the show’s pilot episodes before it was picked up by FX, and who was fired from the show after she broke up with Rob
I always say 'if you want to be trash, do it with your chest' it makes all the difference. I have mad respect for this show👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I love the idea of every shipper coming from Sherlock… like Mac’s canonically in love with Dennis think some fans could of come to shipping on their own where does this Sherlock idea come from😂
i'm someone who's been into shipping for years and grew up with it and this man's explanation for the history of shipping is some of the worst shit I've ever heard 💀.
Hope this helps
