I remember going to my friends houses and playing all of their games because we didn't have a game system at home. I loved going to their houses and playing NES and SNES games with them and wanted a system of my own. I finally saved up and bought a N64 a few years later. It was the first time we, my sister helped, saved up for something and bought it. Right now that same N64 is in my TV stand plugged up to a TV and I still play it, it went with me to college and it's here with me now. It may sound silly but I've had some great memories with video games and my friends STILL come over to play that N64. Loved hearing your story Andre. Everyone who enjoys games should play them. There is no need to make "gamers" seem like an exclusive club. :)

I really loved hearing your Nintendo story Andre. I had a very similar experience with my cousin's PlayStation 2. My parent never really bought me consoles as a kid, but my cousin had a PlayStation 2 and we would hangout and play together and eventually he left it to me when he got older. Gameboys, Nintendo, and PlayStation were just a thing everyone had or didn't have even when I was a kid. Even though I'm around ten years younger than Andre, I completely understand your story. Thanks for sharing.

I'm only half the amount of years the NES has been around. My childhood was the GameCube, and to be honest, it feels just as nostalgic to me as anybody that grew up in the 80's, and really, I'm proud to be a 2000's kid.

1987, moved to a new state and starting the 7th grade. Parents bought me the set with Robbie the Robot...and I had a new friend without meeting anyone.
As you said in your video, it was so easy making new friends at a new school and neighborhood...Nintendo became a universal hub for everyone to get along.

I agree with each and every point you mentioned. Back in the late 80s and early 90s, that was how you made some great friends.
I remember when I went to my friends house for a slumber party/birthday party, it was about 10-12 kids in the bedroom, all were surrounded the tv while playing Nintendo. I mean we played Bad Dudes, RBI, Castlevania...all types of games that night. We played those games from when the party officially started (probably 7) until 3 that morning. We woke up 5 hours later refreshed, ate breakfast and played some more until our parents picked us up that morning. Watching this video reminded me about that glorious time that stuck in my childhood with my friends from school, and how we just played Nintendo and bonded with those amazing memories.
BTW, I owned Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2 for Game Boy. To this day, I still own it.

I loved your story Andre. I really understood how Nintendo affected your life growing up, and props to you for still remembering all as well. I'd like to see some more of these down the road about whatever other game consoles/game series really affected your upbringing. Whether it's god or bad or simply downright hilarious, you've always found a way to make it fun in this subscriber's eyes :)

I love this video. Those who were around, all have a unique NES story to tell. It's seldom told on youtube, but... I do remember how having one was like having a VCR... no "gamer" identity. I do remember judging a game by the cover, and it being a toss up what game was good or not.
Even to this day, I re-trace my steps back as to which games I owned, by sound and visuals as I've forgotten names. Just viewing youtube videos, and making the connection that I've played this one. NES is probably one of the few things I can remember 30 years ago.
    Awesome video.

+mattflo00 Absolutely. It's so weird to see people try to make gaming so segregated when it was a part of our life and culture overall. If anything, it was the media trying to make Nintendo this "ARE VIDEO GAMES DANGEROUS FOR KIDS?" type of mentality. Everyone I knew loved Nintendo one way or another, no matter how many games you played or how much you played it.

i was born in 87. my older sister had a nes so that was the first console i ever played. i can still remember every single game she had: mario bros 1,2 and 3, blades of steel, paper boy top gun 2, new ghostbusters 2, duck hunt, jack nicklaus golf, operation wolf. a lot of great memories bonding with my sister especially playing mario 3.
when i was about 4 or 5 and really into tmnt i remember going to a friends house and playing the original game which blew my mind. i dont think either of us could complete 1 level. i had another friend who had a nes til like '96. all we did was play snake rattle and roll. great game!
first console i owned was sega master system 2. not particulary a great console...but it was so awesome to have a console just for me. i think i only had 3 games: sonic, batman returns and desert speedtrap.

Andre, this might just be your best video in a very long time. I have my own personal Nintendo story. I grew up on the Super Nintendo up until 2003, when after that I was mostly stuck with plug-and-play games. Then I got a GameCube in 2006, a Wii in 2008, an NES (off eBay) in 2009, and so on and so on. Nintendo brings me back to that special part of my life when I was up in my room playing Super Mario World every day after school. They just mean a lot to me.

I grew up with Sega, but my memories are pretty much the same. we rented all our games from Blockbuster, I had that one friend who's dad "works for Nintendo". I even had a tiny black and white TV in my bedroom. I didn't have Mario and Zelda, I had Sonic and Wonderboy. My mum would play Prince of Persia with me and Ecco the Dolphin. I had pages and pages of notebooks filled with level passwords and cheat codes. Fun times.

When I was born my family had already owned an NES. My dad had bought it for himself and my older sister. We were lucky as kids because my parents owned a corner store which actually rented NES games. However around the time I was probably 4 or so the store closed but we got to keep all the NES games, which weren't the best titles but there were still a few gems. So during my very early years I started to play the NES my mom said as soon as I was able to pick up a controller I was hooked. My very first gaming memories are of playing Duck hunt and RC Pro Am, the latter was my favorite video game for years. I actually still own all my games and NES from my childhood. Since I was born in the late 80's though I didn't have a ton of early memories of the NES especially since the SNES came out around the time I was 4 and once we got that I was old enough to have much more lasting and solid memories. Now as an adult me and my friends still play the NES a few times a year and we still buy games at our local retro store. I loved the NES as a kid and still do. It gave me this feeling of wonderment at what each cart held inside. Especially since there was no internet and you could just look those things up at the time. I feel that I was lucky enough to grow up in a time where the NES was still the king of gaming and I got to enjoy it for decades.

Thank you for sharing this story. I can definitely relate. We got my uncle's old Nintendo and would rent games more than buy. My mom would push us to rent new games and not the same ones, so my brother and I rarely rented the same game twice. We played a lot of games when we were younger, but I don't remember too many because we only had them for a few days and then never got them again. Some of those old games took time for you to master in order to really enjoy. Most of the NES games I have now I got in my teens when you found NES games in bargain bins and I had money of my own.

My first game console was a SNES in 1993. So my childhood memories of NES are all at friends' houses (up until about four years ago when I finally bought one). My first memory of NES was around 1987 or 1988 at my neighbor's house, and it was Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt. As my previous experience with video games was all arcade classics, Atari consoles, and my friend's Tandy computer, I was blown away to see a game where music (and music that didn't sound cheesy) played constantly along with the sound effects, and the way Mario jumped was totally new to me (and really fluid and intuitive once I got the hang of it), and then he can collect a flower and spit fireballs?! WUT?!
Then some nine or ten years later, I discovered the Nesticle emulator, bought a game pad, and finally started playing NES games at home. Emulation is probably why I was in my 30s before I actually bought an NES.

You were spot on about how Nintendo would bring people together. I Moved to the states in 86' and it was hard for me to make friends. My parents bought me the Deluxe system and kept my library pretty current. When kids found out I had a Nintendo and the number of games I had, it broke the ice for me. I have some of those same friends today because of the NES. Love this video my man. Keep them coming!

When I was 5 years old we got Nintendo for Christmas. When my parents were at work on week days, me, my brother, and sister would go to my grandparents after school. My Uncle was a older teenage, and had a job. He would buy a lot of the games on his own. So we would play his games there all the time. He gave us Super Mario 2 because we love it so much, and we had mario 1, duck hunt pack in game since it came with it. The only game I remember begging my parents was Super Mario 3, she said we would rent it, and if we liked it she would buy it. Oddly every game I had she randomly bought. She had got quite a few good ones too surprisingly. The Legend of Zelda, Ikari Warriors 2, Double Dragon 2, Astyanax, River City Ransom, Milion's Secret Castle, Batman, Super Mario 3, Shadow Gate, Contra, and Blaster Master. The rest of the classic NES games I would rent from the video store. But my best friend was spoiled, both his parents were doctors. I sware he had a few hundred games no joke.

I still have my NES too, and my most vivid memory is one christmas opening up my presents and seeing the bright blue Super Mario Bros. 2 box and the bright yellow Super Mario Bros 3 box. I too didn't have many games, but the ones I did/do have were pretty darn cool, even if I missed out on a lot of classics like Metroid.

Now the only sports games I would play are Mario ones. I had Chip and Dales Rescue Rangers and Mickey Mousecepades. Both were fun games, but the most time I spend playing was DuckTales! All time favorite video game as a kid! Good times. 😄

I remember when I was a kid, I'd go over to a friend's house and we'd play Animal Crossing or SSB on N64. Or my friend'd come over and we'd play FF8. And this kept up all the way until college. I loved watching my sister playing the NES, which games she'd earn by getting good grades or other such rewards. I could never play Super Mario (1,2,3) well, so I just watched her play, and that's why nowadays I don't mind watching other people play games so much, I guess. There were a lot of great times growing up with the Nintendo systems (and PS1, for me, but we're talking Nintendo here).
Thanks for the video! It's amazing hearing ppl talk about stuff they're passionate about, and this video resonated with me a little.

I really respect my mom and grandmother who raised me, after looking back at their income and how much they supported my gaming hobby. My biggest memory was falling in love with mega man x after renting it. My mom told me she couldn't afford any game and couldn't re rent it that week. Which was pretty disappointing. Then to come home from school and my mom had left a copy of the game sitting on my Super Nintendo.

+Black Nerd Comedy Thank you. Yes every game was a precious commodity to me. I had so many games that people consider by today's standards to be bad. But man I sure relied on them when games weren't able to be bought. These days people treat games like throwaway experiences. Game gets traded in or resold immediately after beating it and moving onto the next. Each game I got and the same for my friends to became a part of our collection. You had the friend who had the expensive Mario paint that you never got. Or the friend that had the super scope and you could play yoshis Safari.
Really loved your video, hit home quite a bit for me.

I was born in '90. For me, SNES was my introduction to the world of gaming. I can still remember the pure awe of seeing and hearing that first Nintendo logo upon popping on our huge dinosaur of a Zenith television set for the Yoshi's Island 2 game. Up to that point my mom had spent what felt like hours trying to get the system turned on and, after talking with customer service over the phone, a guy finally came to our house and revealed that we hadn't pushed the cartridge in all the way,LOL. Then, presto! And the lord said, LET THEIR BE LIGHT! Today I'm 25 and STILL can't get the sense of satisfaction I get from playing my SNES anywhere else in gaming. The day my SNES dies is the day my childhood dies.

One of my first gaming experiences was playing Super Mario Bros at a friend's house with my sister and another girl. We kept passing the controller around and it took all afternoon for one of us to beat the first level. It was hilarious how many times we died on the first Goomba.
I was so excited after we'd gotten an NES of our own, when I managed to play through the whole game without warping, and then did it again on the harder mode. That took much longer than I was usually allowed to play for. Achievement!
    Keep up the great videos.

I love stories like these. When gamers can share their experiences of getting a console or game or game related item that they really wanted and got. Gaming experiences like this are the best and I wonder if in the future, kids today will have similar stories or not cos of the mobile-centric gaming landscape they're in and lack of local multiplayer. I was lucky enough to grow up at the end of the 5th generation and beginning of the 6th generation of consoles so PS2, GameCube and Xbox were the consoles I grew up with. And I'm so glad I was able to go to friends houses and play them cos of the fun times I had playing certain games. Now I look at consoles and see that less and less kids are going to friends houses to have fun playing games and rather are sticking to their smart phones or tablets to play them, or online multiplayer instead.

There will always be a place for Nintendo in my heart. Especially the handhelds. I remember when I was little playing the super old grey-brick-gameboy when waiting for my event when I was swimming lol and of course the color, advanced, and now the 3DS. I love every minute of it! I think I might break down and buy the new console that is going to come out after the Wii U.

The NES days in my family lasted a lot longer than most people as we never got an SNES. My brother had to save up his allowance in order to eventually get the N64 when it come out. We went from NES and Gameboy graphics to the N64. It was quite the jump, lol. I still remember getting the NES, though. It was a shared gift for the whole family, and we were at our aunt and uncle's house. I think our dad was initially more excited about it (I'm pretty sure I didn't even know what it was), but it quickly switched to us kids. Ahhh good times...

Nintendo really was part of my childhood.
Me and my brother would our NES all the time.
    I also had SNES,N64,CG,and Wii.
As I got older,my taste in video games changed a lot.
I now mainly play Sony's PlayStation consoles.
The only Nintendo product I play is my 3DS.
But some of my favorite video games were on Nintendo consoles.
    Happy 30th Anniversary Nintendo ^_^

The oldest thing I remember is playing Darkwing Duck and Gauntlet 2. My family dynamic was something close to yours from the sounds of it and honestly it was Snes and later n64 that helped get away. Thanks for being one of the best out on TH-cam:)

That story was very touching, and it is also true to me as I'm sure it is to many. I have a similar story, but it's with the SNES for me. I wasn't old enough, nor even born, when the NES came out. I still played the hell out of it though when I was a kid, but I'm sure it means a lot more to the people that were actually alive to when it first came out. I will have a similar video for the SNES when it turns 30, and I hope to be as successful as you by then. Much love, and keep moving forward Andre!

Great video, Andre! I love hearing stories like these. There's so much more to gaming than just "is this game better than this game" and it's stuff like this that shows where it's so much more important.

Great story. Mine was actually very similar. Christmas of 89 (I was five) my parents were in the same economic situation, my brother was still a toddler, and they were telling me the exact same thing. I went to bed Christmas Eve resolved to the fact that I wasn't getting the NES action set. I woke up Christmas morning and walked into the living room to find the NES hooked up to the living room television.

Man, it's like we have the same Nintendo story. Somehow, my parents bought one for me and my brothers with no controller. We used to put the games in and just watch the previews...for months. When we first got controllers, we played the hell out of Super Mario Bros.
Coincidentally, my younger brother's name is Andrae.
1986...good times. Thanks for the laugh, man.

Holy crap! I had "Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle" for the Game Boy! Talk about a blast from the past. That was one of my first video games. My personal favorite among the first games I had for my Game Boy Pocket was Pokemon Blue Version.
Anyways, this was a nice story. Thanks for sharing with us. Have a great week!

I was literally raised in a trailer. My parents had a philosophy that we (their kids) would have things that they never could have. As such, we were allowed to have video games and TV, even if it was at a slight cost to finances. Unfortunately, we didn't go with Nintendo. I was a Sega Genesis kid. I had Sonic 2, all the Disney movie games like Lion King and Aladdin, and my favorite game that I just wish would get a reboot: The Lost Vikings. It'll happen some day, I swear!
My first experience with Nintendo was actually with the gameboy color. I had a purple gameboy color with Pokemon Blue for it, and I was obsessed with this thing. So obsessed that I was practically sobbing when I was lead to believe I had lost it while in an EB Games (turns out my grandma just stuffed it in her purse and refused to tell me because I left it lay somewhere. I could still hear the music but couldn't find it anywhere).
After that I got the Nintendo 64 and the Gameboy Advance and I was officially a Nintendo kid. Super Mario 64; Pokemon Red, Blue, Gold, and Silver; Mario Kart advanced and 64; Donkey Kong 64; Kirby 64; Kirby's dreamland remake for the GBA; Super Mario World and Super Mario 3 for the GBA; Pokemon Stadium; Pokemon Snap; Goldeneye 007; Hey You, Pikachu; Star Wars Podracer; Super Mario Bros. Deluxe; Wario Land, ect. The only three franchises I didn't get into were Star Fox, Metroid and Legend of Zelda, but I wish I did because I now know why Ocarina of Time is considered one of the best games ever.
After that I saved up money and bought the Nintendo Gamecube myself. Parents got me games for it for Christmas. Then we got the Wii as a family but soon after that I went to college with my Gamecube and my computer and soon discovered the world of Steam.

+Spencer McClure Lost Vikings really is a great game. I love puzzle platformers in general. They did make one sequel to Lost Vikings, first for SNES, then later for some other consoles (I think 32X and Playstation), and it is still a great game that I've beaten probably a half dozen times, but it's not as good as the original. I feel pretty strongly about the original SNES versions being the best though, even though the Sega ports had added levels and a different soundtrack.

Hey Andre!!!! Loved your personal story about the Nintendo NES!!! I had one but got it when I was 10 or 11 and it was used but still had A LOT OF FUN!!!! Especially playing Super Mario Pros., Duck Hunt, Olympics, and one other one that I can't remember even.though I watched a video on it. Lol. I know.exactly how you feel my family was the same way. I actually started "gaming" on a N64 that my friend had and then got my NES. But still had fun irregardless. Still wish I had it. Ahhh the memories.

Once upon a time people would say, " ...You playing that Nintendo again?" Adults called it(meaning video games) Nintendo. That's how relevant the brand was. Nintendo meant video games. This story was simular to many gamers who had the pleasure of playing games during that era of gaming. good stuff!

This comment's probably going to get flooded down by other comments but the NES does have a very important and special place in my heart. I ended up getting the NES challenge set which came with the NES, 2 controllers and a copy of SMB3 (which ended up being one of my favorite NES games, Mario Games, and Games in general). It's dated 9/28/93, I barely turned 1 year old around that time and it was a gift from a dads friend to him and I remember having a lot of memories of just watching him play SMB1, SMB3, and TMNT3 a lot, even though he wasnt the best at it but i was captivated by the visuals, the music, and the gameplay.
By the time I was around 5 ish i guess, I began to play it and experience the fun myself, and those were just the best times. No Student Loans, no monetary problems, just me, the NES, and SMB3. I still have it connected to my big ass HD TV. It's what made me love video games and brought my passion for music, specifically chiptune. My dream as a kid was to make NES music and now (Despite not being popular or anything) I can say I have completed that dream, all thanks to that good ol NES.
(PS if youre still reading, I love videos like this, its nice to just listen to stories like that)

For a long time we owned an NES but did not really own many games at all because of the prices you mentioned. I remember going to the grocery stores like Kroger and Albertsons who had games to rent in their video sections. It was always so hard to find Mega Man because it would be out all the time. The few times me and my siblings came across it resulted in a long fun week. Finally, at a Toys"R"Us, my parents bought me Mega Man 4 that I pointed out in excitement as a birthday present. To actually own a Mega Man game and play it as much as I wanted to was pure heaven! I know many didn't care as much for it, but to this day I love Mega Man 4 the most with the mega buster, epic music, and incredible final boss fight. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, Black Nerd! ^_^

Had a very similar experience. My first time playing a NES was at my uncle's house. I remember being so enamored with Super Mario Bros. Later that year on Christmas my uncle gave me his NES with Mario and Duck Hunt and I lost my shit lol. I will never forget it. My mom and I would go to Microplay here in Canada every few months and get a new game or two. Sometimes they sucked but occasionally I would find a gem like Zelda and Metroid. I just remember every morning going downstairs at 6 am to watch Batman TAS or play NES. Amazing memories

I had a similar experience with my parents playing videogames with me. I use to own a GameBoy Color and my dad and I would switch playing it over and over. He taught me how to play Super Mario on there and he always got to the next level above me and even beat the games before I did. Now a days he doesn't play game except ones on his phone but remembering him playing games with me and competing with each other was crazy fun. We even played Rayman 3 on it and my next GameBoys I got like the Advance and the SP.
