      I definitely second that... he was the face of nintendo in the late 80's... strange how since the Wii, Shigeru Miyamoto has become that now.

    • @brendansrambles9464
      @brendansrambles9464 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Shigeru Miyamoto was always a pretty big Nintendo icon, just back in the NES days we didn't see much of the Japanese team here in the states. By the 90s with magazines and all Miyamoto was already becoming more and more known in the US. I'd say the modern day US equivalent of Howard is Reggie.

      Yeah its sort of weird watching people that were maybe 5 or 6 at the time of launch discussing it.

    My dad, to this day, uses 'Nintendo' as a synonym for 'video game'. He goes to a casino....video slots are 'Nintendo' slots. App games.... Nintendo games for your phone. For the majority of my childhood gaming time, I didn't even have a Nintendo.
    He hates video games....but to him, they are all Nintendo.

    I'm a grown man and I still LOVE the NES and when it came out and I finally got my filthy paws on one, I was never the same. It was one of the best nostalgic things in my life next to Star Wars of course. Star Wars was first and then Nintendo. Had to clear that up. I will always be a Nintendo Fan Boy/Man. Just kicks Ass. : )

      I remember Christmas of '86, there were two new video game systems available: the Atari 7800 and the NES. I knew I could only ask for one. I was leaning toward the 7800 at first because it was Atari, and who the heck was Nintendo anyway? But the NES ads won me over. The robot, the gun and the graphics just made it seem cooler. (Plus NES was the more expensive console, and even at that young age I had some understanding of the concept that you get what you pay for.) Within a year I knew I had made the right call. Christmas of 1987: I got Zelda AND Megaman!

    6:59 you're clearly too young to remember 1986, because we were just 2 years removed from it, and that year not even 1 million systems were sold! Their big breakout year was 1987 when a whopping 4 million systems were sold! Their skyrocket came in 1988 and 1989 especially when they sold an incredible 18 million systems (8 million in 1988 and 10 million in 1989)!

    I was 12 in NJ when the NES came out. So I had experienced the Atari and the game crash. It was a strange time during the crash. I mean It's not how many perceive it that we didn't want anymore Video Games. I don't remember any of my friends or kids at school who were hating on Video Games. We wanted to play new Video Games but nothing new game related was being released.
    There was a sense of well, Video Games are just not a thing anymore. So forget about them. Many of us though like me didn't forget about them. We survived on what we had left over. I for example had a C64 and would play Donkey Kong and Q-Bert on it. I also had the Atari 5200 and was able to buy two new games for it. (Yes, a few games were released during the crash) Ballblazer and Rescue on Fractalus by Lucasarts. They were sold cheap, less than 10 dollars because I assume no one wanted Video Games so sell them cheap.
    One morning in 85 one of my friends tells me that Steven one of our friends up the block is playing a new Video Game system. We said, shit we gotta check it out! So we ran over there and when we walked into his house a group of kids from our school were surrounding the TV in his living room. They were playing Duck Hunt. I kept asking everyone there, what is this? Where did this come from? Someone told me, it's the Entertainment System! Steven told us his Mom got it for him in NYC. From then on I remember it was full steam ahead. Video Games began growing in popularity again and here we are today

    I had the Famicom and all the kids in the neighbourhood had one (I grew up in Asia). We were always swapping games and IMO the Famicom looked more 'fun' with its colourful little cartridges although I read that the NES was deliberately made to not look like a game console. Still have a Famicom and play the classics every now and again ...

    I remember when I used to get in trouble at school and my mother would take away my Nintendo Entertainment System. I found where she hid it in her room and used to wait until she went downstairs and take it out and play it. I remember I used to get far in games and then have to turn it off when I heard her coming upstairs and rush it back into her room and put it back in the same position. Then she would come inside of my room like, "What are you doing?" I would say I was watching television, but I lied. Rest In Peace, mom.

And for some reason, my mom bought the Sega Master System, which I liked, but when I saw Super Mario Bros. for the first time over at my friends, I went and convinced my mom that the NES was what we needed. It was awesome.

    I'm not sure video games were dead before the NES. I knew a lot of people that still owned Atari systems at that time and were still playing. I do remember stores were flooded with Atari games. I think the market was just so flooded or over saturated with shit consumers were confused. I remember big chain stores having mountains of games on clearance. My buddy and I would go in and pick through them.

    In the UK, we got the NES in 1987... It wasn't a success because everyone already had a computer like a Commodore 64 or a ZX Spectrum which had games from £1.99 plus you could then buy a blank cassette and record the game data onto the cassette for your friends... Either that or spend over £100 on a NES or Sega Master System with games from around £15

    Atari really open the floodgates to the gaming industry. I remember soon after I got the atari 2600 in 1981 the coleco vision console came in, the intellevision, the activision, the commodores etc The market was saturated with systems. But the nes was something different even I got into using it soon everyone had one and so it began to this day.

      One4All All4One the Commodore 64 was way beyond a gaming system. I actually wrote basic game with the sprite technology. Everyone in my Neighborhood had a C64. Never had the NES. I had the Atari2600, 5200, SMS, SGenisis, and the crappy Jaguar.

    • @one4allall4one91
      @one4allall4one91 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 64 was an affordable computer with programming capabilities and a game library. I had the vic 20 my parents bought me. When you think about the IBM's were out of the realm of the regular consumer so these fit the niche. Like said his was an interesting time. A revolution of sorts for the home consumer. It paved the way for the pc at home, game consoles, laptops, tablets, smartphones etc

    and this is why I can't stand the hate that nintendo gets today, we need to show the company some respect, yes they've made a few mistakes in marketing these past few years and yes they don't market to the graphics whore gamers, but if it wasn't for nintendo we wouldn't even have gaming today, there would be no ps4s or xbox ones, and if these millenial gamers can look past the no-5trillion-K-graphics argument and see how fun wii u games actually were, nintendo wouldn't have such of a terrible stigma right now, they wouldn't have lost faith in the wii u and we would have even more games for it now

    Top 5 NES Games: NInja Turtles 2, Mario 3, River City Ransom, Mike Tyson's Punchout, Double Dragon 3(japan version! NA version sucked)

    What? I don't even remember that robot, why is everyone pretending he was central to the NES' launch?

    • @mourasantos
      @mourasantos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was right there in the front lines for the launch, way back in the day. I haven't the faintest recollection of that robot.
      The zapper is a much bigger deal, then and now. And even that would be hard to argue as a system seller.

      @ssjichigo666 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      then you probably weren't at the first launch, the first launch bundles ALL had the rob unit

    • @Likuzaim
      @Likuzaim 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Because including ROB in the initial launch of the NES was how Nintendo got it labeled as a "Toy". Stores refused to stock video games after the market crashed.

    • @VeryDryBones
      @VeryDryBones 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Micro Aggressor you are a liar then. all first series NESes came with Rob. So there is no way you were there at launch

    • @mourasantos
      @mourasantos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If ROB helped it brand it as a toy, then why would Nintendo have to, according to the video, take on all the risk of failing sales?
      Lets not pretend ROB played a role-even a minuscule one-in making the NES a sales phenomenon. It was all about Super Mario.

    Best console ever. Slightly better than the SNES. More great games than SNES. The original and set the framework for gaming.

      Classic Nut I wouldn't say that, I'd say the Odyssey and the Atari set the framework for gaming. They established that consoles would connect to TVs, on channels 3 or 4, interchange cartridges, plug in controllers.
