Amy is a badass in her own way; by being unapologetically feminine and passionate, she uplifts everyone around her and wants to inspire people like Sonic does
Sonic obsessed Amy and girl boss Amy are equally bad, IMO. She was almost perfect in Sonic Boom. The only problem I had was that they made her too much of a group mom sometimes.
Thats why we understand that Amy is a flawed character and Amy fans like that character. Amy can be used sparingly. Use Rouge for serious stor Rouge the Bat can arrive during serious-serious stories parts. Then during breaks for comic relief Amy can show up and do her thing. When Eggman or Shadow is angry, Rouge can arrive and do jumping jacks to look intimidatung. When there is a break, Amy can do her thing.
They are definitely both bad, she should be somewhere in the middle imo. Honestly i like the group mom for Amy’s character thats very in line with her compassionate heart.
I feel like the last time Amy was genuinely well-used and in-character was 06. She actually had some amount of agency and contributed to the plot through her compassion and kind heart. I always enjoyed how she bounced off Silver, how her sheer empathy got him to reconsider his morals, how Sonic genuinely thanked her after she saved him. She even gets to break Elise out and helps gather the Chaos Emeralds when the world goes to shit. She was fine in Unleashed but was in like, 3 cutscenes. 06 felt like the last time she was acrually an important part of the cast and I miss it ngl
Amy's role in Unleashed was to show how Sonic feels when Amy unknowingly breaks up the cute back and forth they do (not the same as will they won't they)
The intro erked me a little bit because of a simple reason. WE LITERALLY ONLY HAVE WHATS BASICALLY A TEASER FOR AMY!!! We know nothing of Movie Amy as a character, and her being able to fight, as long as there is a reason in the actual film, like she is from the future, for example, then its fine. I do agree that she isn't true to herself in CD, but its an adaptation, and it might me an adaptation of Heroes instead of CD on that
Oh i totally agree. The intro is more of a way to draw parallels to all the different versions of Amy, and not as a means to say that the movie version is somehow bad (like you said it was only a very short teaser!). The movie versions are different takes on the characters, so a different version in the movies doesn’t bother me at all. What does bother me is her inconsistency in the games! Sorry for the confusion.
You say that and there’s some people who’ve never liked Amy or thought she was never a good character hyping up Amy’s 10 seconds of the post credit scene , “this gives a look at a good version of Amy” like dawg it’s a couple of seconds there’s nothing you can take away how the quality of the character will be , people who don’t like Amy were hyping that up , like Amy being able to fight is this crazy concept 😂
ok...i'm gonna be like 100% honest and straight with you and if you disagree with me that's fine but imo i think idw amy might be the best version of amy because in the idw comics she pretty much retained most her traits and qualities like being energetic, bubbly and cheerful and shamelessly express her feelings towards sonic and let him know how she feel about her(issue 2 forexample) and quite compassion and understanding etc...i think she's probably the best she's ever been in IDW in games i won't say she was bad in games i mean she undeniably has some pretty good potrayals such as SA1,2,06,unleashed,riders quite abit but she also has some not so great potrayals such as rush, battle, heroes and ofc...the infamous one free riders in games she was abit inconsistent and all-over the place with no consistency until IDW came...and single handedly revitilized her character i'm not gonna say re-invent because those traits were always part of her character but the comics overall gave her more personality and fleshed her out more with much more consistency so that's why i think idw amy is the best version and probably better than how she was written in 2000's and sonic X. also i would like to point out the way ian wrote her atleast in IDW was never exactly felt like she's a mary sue who's perfect and can't do wrong with no flaws i mean...yes in the metal virus saga it kinda felt like that but amy did made mistakes and screwed up a couple times and you really could see the responsibility on her shoulder really took a toll on her to the point having mental breakdown and stress so many time you see her being challenged like seeing the other side of her you normally don't see which i kinda like that like you don't see that really often with other female character like forexample movie peach was did she made any mistakes or had any flaws or legit have any stress or something? not all much plus i don't see any problem with amy having some leadership skills(if not professional) and also being a strategist i mean...after all if you are gonna write her off more mature and slowly tone down her overly obssession aswell as removing the ((chasing sonic)) you gotta replace it something else and..i think this is it.
Hell yeah the Idw comics are the freaking best sonic comic books I've ever read, I'm so you agree that Amy and the others are written greatly in the Idw comics
As a woman who isnt the biggest fan of Amy(rouge is my fav), shes not an easy character to portray. Her being kind is hard to show, she NEEDS to always play off another(usually male) character. It limits how we can show her best side. I also hope we get a NON-girl boss Amy but i do like that she can hamdle herself in a fight. Ive been rewatching Sonic X lately and shes basically useless in a fight in that series.😅 Overall i hope shes a competent fighter that develops a crush on Sonic, and it plays out as a sort of "clumsy first love". I still like Amy's flaw of her obsession over Sonic..I just want it TONED DOWN. She can't be a damsel in distress all the time, just clumsy when it comes to love. Thats my hope anyway 😅
I love the perspective that you bring! I agree, Amy shines brightest when she’s reflecting off another character, as shown countless times in the series (Gamma in SA1, Shadow in SA2, Silver in ‘06, etc.) Completely agree with the first sentence of your second paragraph, where i think that you can have an Amy that is compassionate with a crush on Sonic (toned down from Sonic X or Heroes, like you mentioned), but still being competent on the battle field. I really hope your wishes for Amy’s character in the movies comes to fruition because thats exactly what i want for her as well!
not an easy character to potray? lmao if you just learn her character you can do it well and she doesn't show her compassion side to just a male characters she shows it to her friends and other creatures etc... her compassion isn't limited to one thing. when you said ((Her being kind is hard to show, she NEEDS to always play off another(usually male) character. It limits how we can show her best side.)) really shows you don't even understand the character..
I think it’s just sad how Amy treated in the 2000s with games and media by Sega , like in X ,sonic battle , they wrote her as a joke so many times and made it look like sonic dislikes her , but instead of people calling out sega for disrespecting their female character , they shat on Amy “she’s obnoxious, nothing character , annoying, is only obsessed with a man” and Sega only listened to the wrong crowd, even though it’s their fault people feel this way about Amy Sega has been trying to put Amy in a good light ever since 2013, but not to help her character but to appeal to people who never liked her and misunderstand her for being a “stalker” , Now Sega is super strict and safe with Amy, thank goodness for idw and murder of sonic 😭
pfft...please if sega was supr strict and safe with amy you wouldn't even have those great potrayals of amy in IDW and murderer of sonic the hedgehog :/ my point is sega isn't afraid to let amy be expressive and bubbly i mean if that was the case then why they let the writers to write her like that?
@ idk there’s a difference how Amy has been written in the games compared to idw and murder of sonic , even in the tails tube and sonic Twitter takeovers , she was acting like her crush for sonic was a secret , the new tails tube writes her much better
@@Winder_Storm first off...those twitter take overs isn't don't matter all that much those are just for fun and humor and it's not just really amy literally every character including sonic feels abit diffrent too in those twitter take overs against those are not matter that much or ever affect the direction of the series and character writing also just for your informations murderer of sonic the hedgehog is also a game too like if you are gonna talk about how she's potrayed in the games murderer of sonic the hedgehog is one of them aswell.
I liked her best in SA2 and the Boom show. In both you clearly see her try to emphatize to solve problems and use offense as the last possible resort, not to mention they are both unapolegetically feminine which is something that makes her unique IMO.
as...far am i'm concerned she still loves sonic though like it was hinted multiple times in IDW,frontiers(end of the game) and murderer of sonic the hedgehog just because her crush for sonic has been toned down that doesn't mean ((oh this isn't amy rose anymore and she's ruined)) like you can't insist it was just her crush for sonic there's more to this character.
@@SugarMama98-qb2td Sonic Adventure literally has a whole character arc for her where she becomes independent during her journey to reunite a bird with their siblings.

have so much to say about blaze i'd have to make my own video to get all my thoughts out but im surprised you didn't mention her portrayal in other places like the comics. i think they don't really have a solid handle on her character either, and they're being held back by not being allowed to explore her world. just a sea of missed potential man. fyi re: 7:20 she's still reluctant to rely on others for help even though she learned to be more trustworthy, she still has her moments of relapse. we see this also displayed in rush adventure and the sonic channel stories from '21
@@ezbeingbreezy This video was mostly pertaining to her portrayal in the games. I haven’t read much of the comics, but i do intend to. I’m inclined to go with your take where Blaze is just relapsing, but how they’ve handled her character as of recent doesn’t support that they really had her development from Rush in mind. I totally agree that her not being able to go back to her home world is also a huge missed opportunity!
I think the IDW comics do Blaze justice because we see her having great interactions with the cast while also getting involved in important arcs where she is able to contribute heavily to the plot, being able to emotionally support friends like Silver, having her own fears of leaving her world which lead to an in depth conversation with Knuckles, and her character still keeps a strong consistency from Sonic Rush.
Bro, Amy was doing flips in SA1, this is not new. Hell, it might even be older than you if you look at the Fleetway comics. She got not one but TWO solo runs where she was th main character. And, they were great.
Personaly for Rouge what bother me the most is how now her outfit goes above her wings which is weird asf like how is she supposed to fly then ??? I don't really mind the Sonic Prime outfit for her bc she still slay in them but like literally in every outfit she had in arts/games before she was embracing her feminity and curve and it's sad that now they want to cover it at all cost when kids literally don't care about sh*t like that. Other than that i just want them make Rouge have more interaction with Team Dark in the future lol
I'm forever sad that we have a 3 foot tall femme fatale bat who works for the government but can't stop stealing shit and SEGA doesn't tend ot have a lot of fun with that. Seriously though, the female Sonic characters have always started strong, then seemed to fall behind imo. I love Rouge, easily my favorite gal, and while it's nice to see her out and about again, I'd love to see more with her. She's like the series Catwoman - not a villain, not a hero. She's pretty grey and I'd love to see more of that angle for her. She can still come hang out at Sonic's birthday party, but there should be that element of 'Is she working a job right now or is she being genuine?" that would be a fun approach. I really liked Amy returning to some roots in Frontiers, especially with things like her Fortune Cards coming back. We saw more of her sense of kindness and justice on display there. I also like her portrayal in the current IDW comics. She's still a gal who loves Sonic - when we first see her, she's still flustered and gushing over him, but she's trying hard to focus on her need to help others. I think finding that balance between a girl who loves Sonic, but has a heart of overflowing kindness and a drive to help others while sometimes being a bit superstitious or reliant on fate would be the angle to go for her. She's still capable, she's still kind, she still has her 'girly' traits, but she can step up with the rest of the boys if she has to. Characters like Blaze and Cream have their place as well, and I hope Sega makes room for them .... Especially Cream, where the heck did she even go recently, anyway?
Such a well put together comment! I totally agree with you about Rouge, that dynamic of her being employed to enforce the law while she can’t adhere to it herself is such a fun idea and they really don’t do anything with it! The comparison to cat woman is spot on, although i only slightly disagree with Sonic Team doubting her loyalty. I like the idea that Sonic Team is the only cast that she truly has feelings for, especially an unequivocal devotion to Team Dark. However, once she’s on Earth and gems are involved, her morals should become very gray. Amys characterization in Frontiers is the best we’ve gotten in a very long time, but the Tarot Cards came to the forefront in an unnatural way. That’s very mucha nitpick, and doesn’t bother me THAT much, just thought it was interesting. Great discussion!
@@japesplaysgames And I do agree. I like the idea that Shadow and Omega are the only 2 she maybe can't lie to. I feel like she'd be a straight shooter with Sonic and his crew as well, though I can see her giving them a sympathetic smile and 'It's just a job, no hard feelings." Before doing whatever she has to do. She can't lie to them, not really, but she has a job to do, she'll fill everyone in later. I'm glad you see the appeal of a lawbreaker working for the law as a funny idea for her. I really do think that's super overlooked. I do agree that Rouge's own morals would go by the wayside if you dangle gems in front of her. She's got a hobby and by God, I support her, LOL. While I agree the fortune cards could have been introduced a little more gracefully, I really did enjoy them bringing that back from her Sonic CD days. I do hope we get more of her premonition abilities she was supposed to have, as well as keeping her hammer. I guess only time will tell where they go with her at this point!
In a male oriented series, male characters take over. Just as in most female dominated and written series, women lead and guys are either villains or just submissive rich boys. Its not a "problem" its a non-issue.
That's what they had in mind, going back to the tried and failed notion that girls don't play video games; as it often goes, reality is another matter. There are many girls that enjoy Sonic. After 30 something years, we have no excuse to pretend that they haven't been playing. So let's stop treating female fans as people who somehow breached the walls, and let's making female characters better.
@KyokoM-i1y you'll be glad to know I'm not doing that. I didn't express an opinion on Amy in my comment. I took issue with the original comment being dismissive of female characters in a male oriented series.
@@StarOfElyonIn 2025 Most female TH-camrs/streamers in the gaming and anime community are antiFeminist. This isn't 2010 where you can speak on behalf of girl gamers and not get a response. Everytime Kotaku writes an article speaking for girl gamers today they get countered
The weird thing is that Ian should know about that about Amy’s character due to him writing IDW comic issues that has Amy reacted to Sonic with absolute delight and clearly loved him but still kept her other character traits intact. It may not be likely but I think that Sega might be tampering since they have done that before with Sonic Boom preventing entire chunks of the game from being allowed in when they were already completely finished with them. And I honestly think that Ian wanted to bring back forgotten parts of Amy’s character but it went way too over board though the cards do look really cool and provide another mirror or contrast to Sonic and his own abilities
Okay, so the upcoming Sonic movie has a lot to live up to, especially when it comes to Amy Rose. I mean, she's a character who's always had mixed reception, right? Some people love her, others... not so much. The big challenge for the writers is figuring out how to make Amy true to herself without her coming off as annoying or over the top. And honestly, Amy doesn’t really fit into the typical "girl-boss" mold. There are other characters that could fill that role, but Amy is all about being the comedic relief, which is a tough spot to write for. If Amy’s gonna say something, it needs to be funny or at least amusing - no pressure, right? And if she gets kidnapped or put into a ridiculous situation, it still needs to stay in line with her quirky, silly personality. But here's the thing - if Amy is just the goofy, clumsy comic relief, that gives Knuckles room to go back to being the grumpy, serious guy. Think about it: if Shadow's not around to be the angry one, Knuckles could totally take on that role, kind of like Raphael from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It's a good dynamic, and it helps balance the tone of the movie. And please, for the love of all things Sonic, let's avoid any weird, forced politics. Like, we all know Amy's a girl, but no one wants her to suddenly start spouting out rants about the patriarchy or whatever. These movies are meant to be fun, and that’s what fans expect. Keep it lighthearted, keep it fun, and don't overthink it with unnecessary modern social commentary. That way, the whole cast-Sonic, Knuckles, Amy-can just do their thing without getting bogged down in politics.
Hmm interesting takes. I don’t know if I agree that Amy is comedic relief (maybe an argument could be made for romantic comedic relief), and i think there aren’t necessarily quotas to be filled for certain character archetypes in the Sonic Movies. We definitely agree that there’s a lot of pressure to do Amy justice in the new movie, and she should stay in line with her quirky aspects of herself. I hope they aren’t afraid to lean into Amy being the only girl in the team, and not make her a tomboy (literally). And i could not agree more about keeping politics far away from the Sonic franchise! On that note, this video might be my last “politically charged” video ever, just cause it’s not fun to talk about these things. Thank you for your comment!
nah...writing her isn't even that hard if you actually take your time to actually understand the character and after awhile you get use to it ho to write around her and when you are saying it's hard to show her compassion nature then what was frontiers exactly?
Sonic frontiers Amy is peak Amy. She has a more mature sense of justice and duty. She has always been able to do flips and tricks you just have to choose her lol she’s a dang hedgehog for crying out loud she’s op.
I almost entirely agree, except I still think that Amy can have a crush on Sonic without it being her entire character. It seems in Frontiers they didn’t even want to touch that subject. But other than that i agree with you
Eh idk, Frontiers Amy while being more mature, dutiful, and competent, also feels devoid of any actual personality traits outside of her plot oriented drive to help people. Beyond "caring for others" she feels completely hollow, which is kind of the consequence of over correcting her more animated personality.
@@ZanteBlitz overcorrection is an overstatement i think the reason why she was..well more mellowed out it has to do something with the fact she was emoting around the situation she was in because i could've sworn when the game was over she immediately went back to her usual cheerfulself..when the tone got lighter and also they still kept her bubbly and cheerful nature if idw and murderer of sonic the hedgehog also go anything by the thing about modern amy is that she retain pretty much most of her quality when she can be bubbly and cheerful at times while also abit matured and she's still not afraid to let sonic know how she feel about him and express herself to him openly and also quite compassion and understanding too i guess you could say...she still wear her heart in her sleeve the thing is that she's just not overly obssessive towards sonic anymore but that does't stop her to not express it at all.
@@JakeThehedgehog-m1xSonic Generations remastered erased all traces of Amy's affection for Sonic. It really just means different writers. Yuji Naka said Amy will always chase Sonic simply because its the basis of her character. But Japanese writers are no longer handling Sonic
Interesting video, I wonder if you have ever read the IDW sonic comics? They also have Ian Flynn as head writer, and could possibly give some insight as to how certain characters might be portrayed in future games. As well as having some new original women to round out the male-heavy cast. I'd also recommend them if you want to see more of Blaze and Cream. I especially like a story in one of the annuals where Blaze seeks out Knuckles for council about their respective roles as guardians. On Amy's character, I think the biggest issue as of now is that she's alone in being the only woman in the 'main' cast. As long as she's bearing that responsibility alone, she simply cannot display the 'girly girl' traits because it would make _all_ women in the main cast girly girls. Which is just seen as plain regressive. On the topic of the Sonic 3 post credit Amy, I think drawing conclusions about her character would be hasty. It's a short scene meant to build hype after all. I wouldn't really expect a character to display their finesse at emotional labour in that context, even if they do have it in the next flick. The tarot card thing is still weird she's the HAMMER guy not the card guy wtf.
Amy's character is a girly girl. Women should not be depicted as not being feminine just because the male cast isn't. Guys in general dont want to be feminine if surrounded by women
The real out of universe answer is that Sega partnered with a DEI or ESG studio. These studios control narratives on how different people defined as minorities can be exposed in the least offensive way. This includes but isnt limited to lgbt, and any so-called underprivileged groups. This is also why game companies like Bioware and Ubisoft suddenly made masssive changes in their new games.
This is known as "progressive writing." The problem with "progressive writing" is that it takes away the fun we had with these characters and games for the misguided purpose of being inoffensive. Was Amy flawed? Sure. But thats why we loved Amy Rose. Its why Amy has a massive fanbase. And these unwanted changes destroyed Amy's popularity to conform to Western standards of the "proper" way to depict a woman. Its nonsense. I rather Sega create a new character all together thsn changing an established character
@ thats the consequence of the westernization of Sonic. Its political garbage. With videogames and media, what sells most are strong, ultra masculine men. If Amy being girly would imply "all girls are girly" then that itself would imply women as weak. But its why I dislike the localized Sonic
3:54 are you even sure amy can actually fall into the girl boss category? Like... here's the thing about a Girl boss. A girl boss is a woman that acting to basically be a man and show superiority over others, needs no one, lacks a lot of empathy and like really broody etc...that's what a girl boss actually is. For amy if they removed her passion, compassion, empathy, bubbly, cheerful and fun loving nature and her love for sonic etc..then sure she easily fall into this category but yet that's not the case in most of her modern potrayals such as IDW, frontiers, murdere of Sonic the hedgehog they pretty retained most of it even under ian's pen. Like in IDW she's fun-loving, bubbly, energetic, abit hot-headed(if you get her bad side), compassion and ofc expressing herself to sonic kind of a same thing in murderer of sonic the hedgehog. and in frontiers she displayed her compassion and caring nature and emotional towards the kocos and it showed the love-aspect about her character and when she was corrupted by cyber energy she stayed optimistic, positive and determined to keep going. with that i don't think she actually fall into the girl boss category.
Me personally, it still won’t ruin a female character and come on other female characters from sonic like DIBW characters Archie characters your name so not all of the female characters is a problem and by the way Maria was killed and shoot and was a childhood friend to shadow so I curious why did you add Maria into this?
I have to disagree because we still see Amy's compassionate side in games like Sonic Frontiers where she was adament about helping the Koco which inspired Sonic to help them on the other islands and also showing how she still loves Sonic but it isn't on an obsessive level where that becomes her only personality trait and has more elements to her character now in comparison to games like Sonic Heroes. I don't think that line from Blaze was regression but more of her admitting that she prefers do to work alone but still supports the idea of help. The changes to Rouge are quite minimal and are barely noticed in game but her character has had a return to form with her working with Team Dark again and being able to trust them as a team which is something that the 2010 games refused to show.
@@kage1573 A very respectable take. I think Frontiers Amy is the best we’ve gotten in a while, but in later games and the Frontiers DLC she was written to be toned down in the wrong ways imo. I would disagree that the line is not a regression, only because the entire point of the character arc in Rush was her being able to trust and rely on others, so saying that she doesn’t like to do so partially negates that arc. It’s as if the writers saw how she was in the beginning of Rush and forgot that she transcended beyond her old ideologies. Rouges alternative outfits don’t bother me, but when you specifically choose not to give her feminine traits and change minuscule design choices on already established outfits, it raises a question about what we’re trying to say with that, as some of the women in the comments have pointed out. Thanks for *respectfully* disagreeing, I definitely see where you’re coming from 🤝
@japesplaysgames I think the dlc expands on her character from the base game while also giving her more to do and interesting interactions with other characters where is shows her compassion, sarcasm, determination, and her confidence. I think we still see how she trusts others through her dialogue but still prefers to do things herself such as Knuckles learning to trust others but still decides to protect his island alone or questioning Sonic's decisions. I think they still kept those elements there but just covered the cleavage which was something that was apparent in the Dark Beginnings series but wasn't noticeable because of the writing which uses the same models.
@@kage1573 the final horizon's characterization for amy was good...except one thing they made one blunder here ((i'm not just a dmasel in distress anymore)) easily...her worst line in the game and idk who worte this...because i know it wasn't ian flynn he said he didn't write in-field chatter dialouges so i wanna who wrote this line because based on how ian writes amy in IDW is that he never writes amy as someone who doubt about her abilities and herself.
You need to consider the difference in cultures. There's a massive difference between Amy Rose in Japan's *Sonic CD* and Amy in the Fleetway comics. While Amy was kidnapped in the canon games, comic Amy was an unstoppable force, similar to Rey from *Star Wars*. The *Sonic OVA* featured a character named Sara (or Seira), who, if written in the Fleetway or Archie style, would likely be a leader or a character like Julie-Su. The point is, characters like Amy Rose are written differently depending on whether they are created by Western or Japanese writers. Since *Sonic Frontiers* is written by a Western writer, Amy's depiction aligns with what you'd expect from that perspective.
You do know the writers have some Character mandates right? They can't just write her however they want and turn her completely different like there are some guidelines.
@@JakeThehedgehog-m1xNo, the comic characters were all out of character until 2011. As someone who read fleetway and Archie since the 1990s I am going to be blunt with you. Everyone in the Sonic community said it was inaccurate. And we all complained when Archie turned Sonic into some mediocre love drama with thousands of Echidnas. You are either new to the fanbase or you dont understand. There was a massive split between fans angry at localized changes in the Western localized version of Sonic for decades. I was part of the Sonic community all this time. I know what I am talking about
@@HyperSuperSonic-i1f archie and fleetway were always their own thing...i'm primarily talking about IDW..the idw comics have character mandates which implies for the games aswell i mean sure the localizations for japanese and english versions might be diffrent sometimes(which it's not anything new) but the writer...who do the character-writing and dialouges for the game they have to follow those character mandates.
I don't really think it's a female problem it's just a Sonic character problem look at Silver and The Chaotix the games barely done anything with their characters. I get not liking Rouge getting censored but this isn't nothing new her design got censored in Sonic Heroes and Prime. But to be honest most of the changes in Generations Remaster was pointless considering some of the characters say the exact same line from the original game. I'm pretty sure in the hub world in Shadow Generations Amy flirts with Sonic. I wouldn't say Amy is entirely a girl boss because her love for Sonic had motivated her to care about others.
@@Chillin-jg8vg what you just mentioned is a very interesting point of discussion, because i do believe all of these characters have been reduced to shells of their past selves. However, specific changes, such as limiting romance and censoring feminine features, do make it plausible to consider this a “female character problem” (the quotes in the title alluding to the fact that i mean “female problem” very loosely). But you’re definitely right in the sense that it’s far more wide spread than only the girls.
In Sonic 4, while I want Amy to be competent in battle and have the ability to hold her ground, I also want to see her ‘girly’ side, if you will. I’ve seen loads of fan comics depicting her as bubbly and compassionate, and honestly, I couldn’t agree more. I would also like some hints and teases at sonamy, but I don’t want to see Amy being obsessed with Sonic, who runs away and has no interest. What I really want is for Amy to develop meaningful connections and relationships with the other characters, encouraging them to spread love just like herself. All in all, paramount, please don’t screw this up.
The changes to Amy Rose’s character in the early 2020s reflect a broader trend in the gaming industry toward increased sensitivity and inclusivity. *This shift aligns with the principles of the Bechdel Test, which evaluates the portrayal of women in media.* Sega’s adjustments are part of a wider effort by AAA studios to improve the representation of gender and identity in their games. New offices and partnerships were formed to address cultural sensitivities and avoid harmful stereotypes. _While some view these changes as positive, others see them as unnecessary or even as censorship_ Regardless, this shift marks a significant change in how video game characters are developed and portrayed.
Yes a Japanese franchise is worried about dei. It's not like they changed Amy's character because people didn't like how she was charactized back than and hated her.
@@Chillin-jg8vgSega, Square Enix has strong DEI policies that affect their game franchises as a whole. The consultancy firms work with both Japanese and Western studios for a unified version. Sega is completely transparent about this and has no intent on hiding this

i feel like the reason sega covered rouge up is because they did not want people to like rouge pure because of her suggestive appearence, they want people to like rouge for her big personality and treasure hunting skills, since rouge has so much more to her then just her body. they kept her curves, which is good since their normal female features, but they covered them up so it doesn't look as sexual.
I think we still need to wait and see how they will handle Amy's personality in Sonic movie 4. We just see her for like... 10 seconds and she did'nt have voice lines yet. I think she can still being in love wirh sonic and being girly and silly and bubbly as she always have been and at the same time being strong. She can be both.
I believe that the "Pink touch" in Sonic has lot to do with the huge amount of OCs and badly- drawn fanarts that the users of DeviantArt in the 2010s knew very well.... From the most innocent ones to the "spicy" ones. Using similar schemes for their charachters, It May have been a move by Sega to keep closer their audience and showing them that: "oh yes, you can be Sonic's/Shadow's/Whoever's girlfriend too 😉", hence selling more games. Heck: we've arrived to the point that in a 2010s game a teenager Is introduced in the story and It Is stated that She.... I believe Elisa's the name.... And Sonic are in love 😂
Agree on the first two points Definitely want Amy to have a compassionate character and an obvious interest in sonic But I must disagree with you on Rouge Covering some of her "exposed" body is definitely welcomed It's simply not appropriate Her style , character , and body is obviously the same , just some parts covered because children play the game , and as a religious adult I prefer women to wear modest cloth , so yeah I welcome such changes
I disagree. Amy has changed a lot because she's gone through character development over the years. in SA1 she learned to start standing up for herself. In Sonic Battle she trained relentlessly to become stronger. And now, even though she doesn't have super powers, she's physically strong enough to contend with characters like Knuckles who actively have super strength, all thanks to her hard work.
For the Rouge costume its made sense when he was more sexy because he showed his provocative personnality. Rouge is an anti heroin her outfit should suggest, and its was not extreme. And if you took a childrens to the beach I think they will see the same things frankly or is the problem? I dont understand, for me its just dumb censorship...
Me personally call me crazy but the IDW comics are the best adaptations of Amy, Blaze, Rouge, and I think Ian Flynn does a wonderful job on it he gets way more hate than he needs and I just hate all these die-hard Archie fans just saying Archie's better. Also Amy has matured and has character development, she still loves Sonic, but is just shy and less FANGIRLY about him, so people need to stop being babies, and accept character development. She still has those damsel in distress attitude, she just shows it less.

Yes I want Blaze the Cat to be as she was in Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventures that is the true Blaze not that trash version of her in 06 is not Blaze at all and I hope to God above that whenever Paramount adapt Blaze into the movies that She is not to be paired with Silver but be her own character based in the Sol Dimension she had no true purpose being in 06 at all only for Sega to butcher her character. She deserves better an to get her own game to be an Main Character again. Year of Blaze the Cat for 2025 this year marked 20th Anniversary for Sonic Rush and its been waaay overdue.
You hit the nail on the head with the Rouge segment. The problem stems from the prudes in western nations demanding beautiful females be covered up, but the same people would also say nothing when a bloated land whale is walking around IRL in a string bikini, calling it stunning and brave. Like you said, us guys didn’t pay much attention to Rouge’s assets when we were younger, is because we were young. A lot of us didn’t even experience our first voice crack yet when we first saw female characters like Rouge. And also, whenever someone tries to go for the “rule34” assumptions, I like to say: “that seems more of where your mind goes first than my mind.” They never have a real comeback after that.
They say video game Women gives real life Women unrealistic body expectations but than have all of the Women be fat which also is unrealistic body expectations cause not all Women are fat. The hypocrisy. 😂
@ double standards as well. Fat isn’t healthy, and the fat influencers are dying well before their forties. And you can bet that none of them ever had kids before they got the fat on them. When a woman has big breasts, wide hips, and a small waist (hourglass figure) that is a sign of high fertility, and no matter how advanced we get, instinct will always override thoughts. So in this context, Rouge and Vanilla have the signs of high fertility, leaving poor Blaze worried that she may not be able to continue her royal bloodline (mostly because timeline of events doesn’t seem to exist in Sonic lately, ever since the Archie run had a major reboot after the Penders lawsuit and didn’t continue, but the cancellation was most likely not the result of the lawsuit, and that how mobians develop is never explored upon in a way that is subtle enough for young kids to not notice). But since we don’t know the order of events exactly, we can deduce that despite the obvious, mobians develop in similar patterns. (Side note of what I noticed with anthro characters, the more they are clothed, the more it implies the characters are more similar to humans than animals. So if a male anthro is wearing pants… you get the idea).
I'm gonna be honest I really didn't care that much if rouge was censored i can't speak for everyone but if me personally lose my shit over rouge's chest being covered i might aswell make myself a weirdo
@ it starts with covering Rouge, then the same people who pushed for that are now demanding that Sonic wear pants. Oh wait, then it’s just blue Crash Bandicoot. And you won’t be able to complain about the censorship.
@@JakeThehedgehog-m1x Rouge getting censored isn't even that big of an deal she has been censored before in Sonic X, Heroes and Prime yet I seen no one have a fuss about that. It's just people nit picking at this point.
I highly recommend you read the idw comics as everyone including the female characters get the spotlight and show their good characterization. Excluding shadow he sucks
He...did read the IDW comics he didn't like amy in IDW. For some reason right now ian in his part he writes amy better than how he writes her in games i Think issue 62,67,2 etc and...his classic amy is a perfect example for that.
I agree with you in most of the video, except the start, we still don't know how Amy will be portrayed in the movies, hopefully they'll do justice for her and make an amazing characterization like they did with Knuckles and Shadow. I like Ian Flynn, I like his writing but I, as a woman myself, actually despise the way he writes Amy, I feel like *his* writing was the main issue. When Evan Stanley writes her in the comics she's honestly perfect, another perfect characterization was Ian Mutchler's in The Murder of Sonic the hedgehog, she's very bubbly and girly AND strong. theses comments calling SEGA "woke" are honestly bothering me, SEGA is actively trying to remove her crush because for the longest time she was hated for being girly and having a crush on Sonic. SEGA is trying to approach the Sonic Boom characterization where her crush is a secret. About Rouge, honestly her censorship is getting ridiculous. I honestly think it's misogynistic to censor her, specially her back, it's telling the wrong message, that women should be ashamed of their bodies. I think Sonic Prime was the worst offerder, having her chest completely covered is fine! It's a kids show after all, but they also made her *completely flat* ????? implying that her having a chest was the problem, like women should be ashamed of their chests even when they are covered! weird! 😒
@@zzcarnotauro It’s way too early to tell how Amy will be in the next movie, that intro was more of a way to draw a parallel between her portrayal in the movies, and her seemingly inconsistent characterization in the games. I don’t mind Ian too much either, but i agree with you on his writing on Amy and that it’s not very well handled. TMoStH was a really good interpretation of Amy, and I haven’t read too much of the comics. My video pertains specifically to how she is in the games. I really don’t like political vernacular like “woke” to begin with, and even using “girlboss” in my video was hard enough (and when i use it, i mean it very loosely and for a lack of a better term), so trust me, we agree there. It seems you and I have the exact same take for Rouge’s censorship, and i wish her way of embracing femininity wasn’t viewed as a problem. Very interesting to hear your perspective, especially coming from a woman! Thanks for commenting, I love these discussions.
I am curious what exactly you dislike about his writing for amy i mean the way evan and ian write amy has alot similarities I mean ofc there are some differences too ofc. But let me break down similarities: 1. Both do infact potray her love for sonic in some way or another Ian(2,14,15,32,67) evan with chao race,37(abit at the start of the issue),39,75) etc.. 2 both do nail her compassion and caring nature right. With evan (is the camp arc when amy was comforting jewel that she can do it and handle things. With ian (in the metal virus when she saved crram and giving her emotional support when she lost her mom and frontiers which i know it's not in the comic but that game nailed that one aspect if her character very well) 3. Both potray her strong and capable. For ian is self-explanatory but for evan an example i could give is in urban warefare when she lift a giant hammer and bash it at a robot. 4. Both do have her quite bubbly and energetic quite abit For ian (issue2,sonic frontiers prequel comic, after escaping the zombots and flee to angel island she was abit bubbly there too until zavok came, aftermath of metal virus(quite abit after she hand tge restoration to jewel and before eggman's attack),62,67 etc.. as for evan with chao race, phantom riders arc,37 etc..) So the difference is that evan make amy more girly and well..cuter while ian does it less just have her abit bubbly and energetic at times but not really making her all girly... atleast with modern amy he does it quite alot with classic amy though like ian's classic amybis the definition of cuteness and he nail her consistently. But overall my point is while there maybe some differences between their potrayals but it's not that much that it's a 180 or day and night. And one of the issue with your argument if...sega truly wanted to remove her crush for sonic then we wouldn't even have soke great potrayals of amy such as IDW and murderer of sonic the hedgehog if this was mandated that amy no longer love sonic anymore...then none of this would've even happened like...game over think this for a moment
The tarot card thing becomes more offensive when you realize that the reason she had that hobby in the first place wad that reading tarot cards was a common hobby among Japanese girls at the time and it was added to her bio to make her more relatable. But now Ian is using it to turn her into a "weird, mystical, oracle freak" archetype.
Um ok i don't particularly don't know much about Japanese culture but.. what's so offensive about those cards? I mean...if she wants to use them along with her hammer then let her use it it could be a part of accessories along with the hammer besides it's not like it's a personality trait it's a tool an object it's more of a gimmick not a personality trait.
@@JakeThehedgehog-m1x The reason it's offensive is because it goes against the whole reason she had that hobby in the first place, the whole purpose of putting that in her bio. It's taking something that was meant to make Amy more grounded, ordinary and relatable and uses it to make her look mystical and weird.
@@sharzinlalebazri5673 wait more ordinary as in making her more normal? You do realize she doesn't need to be weak in order to be compassion she can still be compassionate and have empathy while also being strong and independent which... infact she already is!

I LOVE Maria’s characterization in the movie, and I hope Shadow’s memories are shown more in movie 4!
Use Rouge for serious stor
Rouge the Bat can arrive during serious-serious stories parts.
@@japesplaysgamesyeah but I think she should work up to the groups mom, she should start of immature
@japesplaysgames what I meant is that she would basically nag others or be a buzz kill. I liked her doing her counseling thing.
@@littletiffany9089Please explain how Rouge doing jumping jacks is intimidating
I feel like the last time Amy was genuinely well-used and in-character was 06. She actually had some amount of agency and contributed to the plot through her compassion and kind heart. I always enjoyed how she bounced off Silver, how her sheer empathy got him to reconsider his morals, how Sonic genuinely thanked her after she saved him. She even gets to break Elise out and helps gather the Chaos Emeralds when the world goes to shit.
She was fine in Unleashed but was in like, 3 cutscenes. 06 felt like the last time she was acrually an important part of the cast and I miss it ngl
Exactly this! I think she peaked in SA1 but her characterization carried over so well into 06.
Amy's role in Unleashed was to show how Sonic feels when Amy unknowingly breaks up the cute back and forth they do (not the same as will they won't they)
@@japesplaysgames I recommend Freedom Plant 2 for a Sonic like game with female characters.
I agree. IDW Amy is still affectionate and loving but not obsessive. She can fight and hold her own but is not some OP Mary Sue
Ive been rewatching Sonic X lately and shes basically useless in a fight in that series.😅
Overall i hope shes a competent fighter that develops a crush on Sonic, and it plays out as a sort of "clumsy first love".
It limits how we can show her best side.)) really shows you don't even understand the character..
i have confidence that the movies will do amy right like how they did both knuckles and shadow before her
I think it’s just sad how Amy treated in the 2000s with games and media by Sega , like in X ,sonic battle , they wrote her as a joke so many times and made it look like sonic dislikes her , but instead of people calling out sega for disrespecting their female character , they shat on Amy “she’s obnoxious, nothing character , annoying, is only obsessed with a man” and Sega only listened to the wrong crowd, even though it’s their fault people feel this way about Amy Sega has been trying to put Amy in a good light ever since 2013, but not to help her character but to appeal to people who never liked her and misunderstand her for being a “stalker” , Now Sega is super strict and safe with Amy, thank goodness for idw and murder of sonic 😭
pfft...please if sega was supr strict and safe with amy you wouldn't even have those great potrayals of amy in IDW and murderer of sonic the hedgehog :/
my point is sega isn't afraid to let amy be expressive and bubbly i mean if that was the case then why they let the writers to write her like that?
I agree SA2 Amy and Boom Amy are the best portrayal of Amy.
I didn't like Amy being reduced to nothing but Sonic's simp, but it's gone too far the other way. She's just bland now without that
Exactly. It’s just a cycle of two extremes, meanwhile there’s a ton of room in between.

have so much to say about blaze i'd have to make my own video to get all my thoughts out but im surprised you didn't mention her portrayal in other places like the comics. i think they don't really have a solid handle on her character either, and they're being held back by not being allowed to explore her world. just a sea of missed potential man.
fyi re: 7:20 she's still reluctant to rely on others for help even though she learned to be more trustworthy, she still has her moments of relapse. we see this also displayed in rush adventure and the sonic channel stories from '21
@@ezbeingbreezy This video was mostly pertaining to her portrayal in the games.

Its not a "problem" its a non-issue.
That's what they had in mind, going back to the tried and failed notion that girls don't play video games; as it often goes, reality is another matter. There are many girls that enjoy Sonic.
Amy was originally an anime archetype. Current Amy is Americanized. That is all.
@@ling8956what on earth are you talking about??? Most fans hate Amy when she first appeared because they thought she was cringe and clingy

@@Theia_sb Thank you! We’re on the road to 100 🙌🏽😂
I have to disagree because we still see Amy's compassionate side in games like Sonic Frontiers where she was adament about helping the Koco which inspired Sonic to help them on the other islands and also showing how she still loves Sonic but it isn't on an obsessive level where that becomes her only personality trait and has more elements to her character now in comparison to games like Sonic Heroes.
Bro my brightness is all the way down and I’m still getting blinded by the video 💀
The hub world in Shadow Generations Amy does not flirt with Sonic. There is left over animations from the original 2011 version
@@HyperSuperSonic-i1f My bad than someone in another comment

@@japesplaysgames When you mean limiting romance you mean Amy not flirting with Sonic?
@Bobble-m6e What you just described sounds like a perfectly balanced Amy! Hopefully we get that for her film debut.
I can simply Sega's new DEI and ESG initiatives. Their fancy wording essentialy meant "game characters are sexist and they need to be fixed"

Sega look all im saying is just give the human characters more depth ESPECIALLY MARIA! cuz then that would make shadows story even better! If you can make maria more relatable in the movies then you can add depth to her character in game you have NO excuse!
i feel like the reason sega covered rouge up is because they did not want people to like rouge pure because of her suggestive appearence, they want people to like rouge for her big personality and treasure hunting skills, since rouge has so much more to her then just her body. they kept her curves, which is good since their normal female features, but they covered them up so it doesn't look as sexual.
Why do I feel like Wave has the most personality out of any female Sonic character now?
Run with your friends and stay connected.
8:10 never payed any mind huh? Then how did you noticed these small details?
Agree on the first two points
Definitely want Amy to have a compassionate character and an obvious interest in sonic
But I must disagree with you on Rouge
Covering some of her "exposed" body is definitely welcomed
It's simply not appropriate
Her style , character , and body is obviously the same , just some parts covered because children play the game , and as a religious adult I prefer women to wear modest cloth , so yeah I welcome such changes
Honestly I just want Sonamy in the next game.
As a girl i like Rouge
Shes hot
Me personally call me crazy but the IDW comics are the best adaptations of Amy, Blaze, Rouge, and I think Ian Flynn does a wonderful job on it he gets way more hate than he needs and I just hate all these die-hard Archie fans just saying Archie's better. Also Amy has matured and has character development, she still loves Sonic, but is just shy and less FANGIRLY about him, so people need to stop being babies, and accept character development. She still has those damsel in distress attitude, she just shows it less.
Nah... you're not crazy some fans like myself do think amy and other female characters are well-written in that comic

But let me break down similarities:
1. Both do infact potray her love for sonic in some way or another
Ian(2,14,15,32,67) evan with chao race,37(abit at the start of the issue),39,75) etc..
2 both do nail her compassion and caring nature right.
With evan (is the camp arc when amy was comforting jewel that she can do it and handle things.
With ian (in the metal virus when she saved crram and giving her emotional support when she lost her mom and frontiers which i know it's not in the comic but that game nailed that one aspect if her character very well)
3. Both potray her strong and capable.
For ian is self-explanatory but for evan an example i could give is in urban warefare when she lift a giant hammer and bash it at a robot.
4. Both do have her quite bubbly and energetic quite abit
For ian (issue2,sonic frontiers prequel comic, after escaping the zombots and flee to angel island she was abit bubbly there too until zavok came, aftermath of metal virus(quite abit after she hand tge restoration to jewel and before eggman's attack),62,67 etc.. as for evan with chao race, phantom riders arc,37 etc..)
So the difference is that evan make amy more girly and well..cuter while ian does it less just have her abit bubbly and energetic at times but not really making her all girly... atleast with modern amy he does it quite alot with classic amy though like ian's classic amybis the definition of cuteness and he nail her consistently.
