Since Metal is supposed to think he is the real sonic...you ever think deep in his code under all the eggprogramming that watching Sonic and his friends leave after a defeat...Metal thinks "Why are my friends walking away with that FAKE...Im right here.."
He likely sees them as just enemies who go off with the fake Sonic, as he only sees loyalty to Eggman (kidnapped Amy in CD)/himself as the supreme being (Heroes), but he might've occasionally thought after his defeats about why Sonic does have so many friends
That's a sad aspect of Metal that's never touched on: His refusal to have anyone with him. Unlike Omega, he doesn't want to have friends, or seemingly even allies... Even his comic status as Robotnik's "son" is total nonsense, and just Eggman keeping him on a mental leash. Metal, left to his own will, will operate solo, and ONLY solo, using everyone else as pawns at best. It's a sad thing to see, since, as mentioned, Omega, despite being just as violent as Metal can be, actually does have friends. He even fell in love with Blaze. But Metal? Literally nothing else matters to him but besting Sonic.
@@HaydenPrometheus45 A technique where you’re moving so fast you vanish in an instant, leaving behind an afterimage. It’s almost as if you were teleporting. It’s a really cool move.
I loved how they made Tails more capable in the OVA. People always forget that despite not being nowhere near as fast as Sonic, he's still insanely fast.
The irony of Metal Sonic is that quite possibly his single best appearance in years is in prominent fan material- Death Battle paid him some SERIOUS respects in Bowser vs Eggman. But yeah, beyond his functionally-brief appearance in Heroes, I definitely agree that the OVA is by far Metal's best portrayal in the franchise's history. He is an insanely compelling character in that for all the reasons you stated and more.
For that last scene where Hyper Metal dies, I think Sonic could have saved him. But Hyper Metal refused. He understands now that he isn't the real Sonic, but he still is his own being and so, showing the same kind of attitude that Sonic has, he decides to go out in his own terms, in the way that HE decides. Him actively reaching out to Sonic's hand just to slap it away is an incredibly powerful statement, and a great display of personality and independency from Hyper Metal, as well as a final act of defiance towards his rival. Basically "I know now that I'm not you. But I'm me. And *I* decide my fate, not you."
What I love about Metal Sonic is that he believes that’s HE is Sonic up until that panel in the IDW comic where he realized that didn’t get effected by it unlike Sonic, and that’s where he knew he wasn’t the real Sonic, I hope that the games continue with this, giving him a sort of identity crisis
One thing I love about IDW metal is that he clearly has a personality and motivations outside of eggman and even recently in the animations. When sonic told metal that he has to save “daddy dearest”, you can see metal actually very angry and annoyed that not only does he have to stop fighting sonic told save eggman, but that sonic of all characters is right. You see it again when eggman literally orders metal to stop fighting sonic briefly which metal expressed annoyance to but listens nonetheless. It is noted in the sonic colors animation that eggman is designated as a parental figure to metal and he wants his approval. He wants to prove he’s better than sonic but also doesn’t want to disappoint eggman so he’s always balancing his need to obey and his need to win. And during the metal virus saga, he dips his hand into a barrel of metal virus to see if he’d get infected…because sonic was, and he’s superior. So he should also be infected right? So…why wasn’t he? No words at all. Just pure silence, and a mild glitch in his mechanical eye. You can tell that this greatly affected him. Metal feels like a great character all without talking and barely having any facial expressions. But the games don’t show this enough. They don’t show metal actively going after sonic, and then begrudgingly obeying eggman because there are more important things. We don’t see metal overpowering sonic or outsmarting or doing anything except obey. It sucks. He’d be a great villain and one of Sonic’s best rivals in the game alongside shadow
I think part of that is because he's often kept in reserve. Ironically the most UN-Sonic thing about Metal is his lack of freedom, the very thing that defines Sonic. He had a taste of it in Heroes when he cut loose and did his own thing, but all other times he's not a free agent like Shadow or the others. He obeys Eggman and stays in place until ordered otherwise. What's really needed is for Metal to start taking matters into his hands more often without necessarily overstepping enough that it gets him canned. Honestly, what we really need is a Sonic game that's a lot like the first Sonic Adventure again where one of the characters on the roster is Metal Sonic. Give him an entire story arc where he's free to roam and do things on his own terms, even if Eggman initially is the one who sent him out to do them.
YES!! THIS!! I have been talking forever about how I love Hyper Metal Sonic and how he’s basically running an exact copy of Sonic’s brain, he’s more of a clone of Sonic under Eggman’s control and less of a robotic doppelgänger.
This movie is why Metal Sonic is my favorite sonic character ever! Every time I think of Metal Sonic, this is the version I think of! And I'm so happy this movie is still loved! as its one of my all-time favorites!
It does feel like once Heroes made him the villian, SEGA sort of didn't know what to do with Metal Sonic. Apart from his cool fight in Shadow Generations, I'd like to see what they could do with him again. That and Sonic Movie 4 when that comes out.
Part of the problem is the linear form of storytelling that the games have. Sonic Adventure 1 had the best way of telling multiple characters' stories without everyone tripping over each other or taking away from anyone's spotlight. Every character had their own story with a full set of stages, cutscenes and their own motivations. Imagine a Metal Story in that same sense, similar but also distinctly different from someone like, say, Gamma.
Is it safe to say that we need more Sonic Anime content? It just looks so cool! Neo Metal Sonic is my favourite version of the character, probably because it was my first introduction to the character, and I still hope to this day he will make a return (He recently did last year in the fan game Sonic Forces Overclocked). But I agree with you that the hyper metal Sonic is also definitely an amazing interpretation of the character and the real deal of a Sonic villain and a doppelgänger. And shows that he deserves to be more than just another Badnik for Eggman. They should as you use him sparingly, until they find a better way to use him
I think Hyper Metal puts Sonic's clothes on the owl because he knows that it's Sonic's favorite clothes (it's stated that they are), and he does it to disrespect Sonic by giving his favorite clothes to wear to someone else.

I feel like OVA gave Ian Flynn several ideas for metal in the IDW comics, considering the moment metal finds out sonic is in the mix of something he dashes into the battle and beelines for sonic, only stopping when eggman is in danger.
It’s taken them 14 years to finally start moving him out of that shade 😭 he absolutely did take Metal’s spotlight though, I love Shadow but he is definitely part of the reason.
This OVA is the reason I love Metal Sonic. His characterization in this is practically how I've always viewed Metal. When Sonic Heroes came out and I got to the final story, and heard Neo Metal's lines, It was almost like they were directly referencing this OVA. EXACTLY, they made him be something special, that happened once in a while and was a threat to everyone, the games kinda did that but his debut games suffered from hardware limitations and they stopped doing that when we got to modern era, unfortunately
If it's worth mentioning, this specific Metal Sonic from the OVA was adapted in the Archie comics, after his destruction they were able to later [somehow] recover his recovered and this Metal Sonic went on to become Shard and was an active ally of Sonic until The Archie comics did a reboot of their Sonic series.
That never happened though? Hyper Metal Sonic was never adapted into Archie, the Archie comics made their own Metal Sonic modelled after the Metal Sonic of Sonic cd. This Archie original metal sonic originally only had two quills, one on top and one on the bottom of the back of his head. That Metal Sonic went on to obtain a power gem, before getting “destroyed”. He was later recovered and upgraded, sacrificed himself to save Sonic and Tails after nearly killing them, THEN his parts were rebuilt into shard much later. Hyper Metal Sonic and Archie’s metal sonic are not one and the same.
@@Green_The_Gamer They were not one in the exact same, they were just an adaptation. The events might not have been the same but Sega did come in with the instructions to do something with Sonic OVA, that's why Metal Sonic in the Archie comics and Hyper Metal Sonic shared similar fates around a volcano and having a some spark of goodness in them. Back then with the Archie comics, the writers had alot of control on how to handle the series, just very now and then when some new piece of Sonic media comes along Sega only gives them a few points to what they should do/lead up in conjunction with the games and the rest is up to them.
I'd like to think of Metal as almost Eggman's "son". Similar to Sage being his "daughter". He acts like an enforcer trying to impress Robotnik and finally destroy Sonic
The reason I love OVA Metal so much more then game metal is that he actually has Sonic's personality. In the games hes just kind of an edgy robot that looks sort of like sonic and thats it
Metal definitely used to carry this cold intimidating presence. That uncanny valley of a metallic imitation willing to kill to assume the title of the Real Sonic. I still love Shadow, Silver, and Jet, but Metal is the og rival.
I thought about how there was that one comic scene during the Metal Virus story where Metal Sonic was watching footage of Sonic with the virus on him, and he decided to go over to a bucket filled with the same liquid that causes virus to see if it would work on him. When it doesn’t, it kinda gives Metal Sonic an existential crisis. I imagine his thinking being like “I AM the real Sonic. I exist to BE Sonic. But this… tells me that I can never be Sonic. If I cannot be the one thing I believed myself to be, then who am I supposed to be?”
Maybe it’s time to give Metal his own team Sonic. He’s got a metal Knuckles and a metal tails. Sage could help them form their own kind of bond. You could probably make a story that shows a new bond forge with Sage. Eggman’s family is getting bigger. The story potential could be huge.
I agree with the reply above mine that instead of counterparts to Sonic as a team for Metal Sonic, a team of the empire would suit better since they already have a family dynamic. Though if we are going for the direct counterparts route, I feel like Metal sonic, Mecha knuckles, and Tails doll would be better. Having everyone be part of the “Metal” series would be kind of boring and lacking in variety.
in the end of the murder of sonic the hedgehog, they did have sage and metal in the little endcard together. so it's not totally impossible?? i sure hope a relationship to a brand new eggman prized robot leads to new dimensions with metal
As a tween in the 90s when I saw "Mecha Sonic" in Sonic 2, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Then he got an upgrade in Sonic 3. I still want to see THAT version in the Sonic movies. I never had a Sega CD so wasn't familiar with the Metal Sonic in that version-I do like his design though and as far as I'm concerned, "Mecha Sonic" and Metal Sonic are the same; I was beyond hyped to see him on the big screen. I hope the film makers can do him justice.
Everyone's been obsessively talking about who should voice Metal in the fourth movie, but honestly I want this version to be the basis they use. Have him just use beeps and blorps and robot noises, but have people able to understand him anyway.
"Metal Sonic has so much untapped potential! I could see him taking on a larger role, almost like a brother to Sage or even tying into the Archie Comics with Rust the Mecha Sonic. Imagine a storyline where Metal Sonic is introduced as a future version of himself, leading to battles with his past iterations. Add a twist where an alternate, more sinister version of Metal Sonic from a fractured timeline faces off against the present Metal Sonic, with Sage stepping in as an ally. It’d be an amazing way to expand his character and dig deeper into his legacy!"
Metal Sonic is the Reptile of Sonic, 2 Strong Clone Characters of the Main Character that had their shine long ago, but still manage to be glorified body guards to Eggman and Shang Tsung
I think that metal gets reset every so often to account for sonics new memories. Which makes it sadder to think that when he finds out the truth he is erased. It is an endless cycle he cant escape. With shadow he was MADE to LIVE and to do what HE believes in. Metal Sonic was scraped out of this because Eggman is afraid of another Metal Overlord situation.
Sonic movie stuff Can metal sonic be presented and written well when there's more than 1 of him in that scene in the sonic movie? Assuming in Sonic 4, there's just an army of metal sonics
I can see a world where a Sonic 4 trailer opens with the confrontation at the New York border, panning out to a Metal Sonic obsessively reviewing it second by second to see where his “authenticity” fell short. I know this specific idea isn’t super likely, but I’m choosing to be optimistic that they’ll find some way to treat him well
ironically, in IDW, they did go through a emotional character driven arc that questioned his programming and ultimately gave him a somber yet hopeful redemption, but it wasn't Metal Sonic, it was other incarnation, Mecha Sonic Mk. II from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, NGL I am rather hyped to see how him and the scrapniks turn out, Mecha Sonic may very well turn out to be like Shard from Archie only mainline and official and we get a canon look of a Metal Sonic variant thats actually on Sonic's side.
I know a version of Metal Sonic who ended up in this same situation, but actually returned. From the Archie Comics, there was a Metal Sonic who dies in a volcano, and returned as a robot named Shard. The Original Metal Sonic, now upgraded. You should read about that, because it is an interesting way to see Metal Sonic in a different way… a What If Metal Sonic Turned Good scenario. Until the Genesis Wave had to reset the timeline and Archie Comics rebooted…
Sonic movie 3 spoilers: If there's anything that I got out of the Knuckles series, it's that they aren't afraid to reference the Sonic OVA, even if it was just giving Knuckles his iconic hat. My hope is that Sonic movie 4 will pay homage to the Sonic OVA in how they portrayed Metal.
Slight correction on game Metal: Him thinking he's Sonic seems to be entirely down to outright insanity. Listen to his rambles during Heroes, and Metal both states his being the real Sonic, and notes being made to beat Sonic. The cobalt Terminator seems to have utterly lost it, likely due to knowing his purpose in life, and being a total failure... And his current state of being a generic badnik seems to be Eggman keeping him on as short a leash as possible. If Metal isn't kept on said mental leash, he's likely gonna go further off the rails. But otherwise, yes, it's a shame to see Metal, both in the games and comics, be reduced to nothing more than a Sonic badnik, that really could be traded out with any other Sonic badniks from over the years (Superstars, hilariously, basically did just that).
One problem here is that modern SEGA has become allergic to anything resembling in-depth characterization or story-telling with the franchise. That side of Sonic seems to have died after Unleashed, and/or with the death of the Archie comics. The only side permitted (officially) nowadays is the static cartoon character. A "Hyper Metal Sonic" in the games has a high chance of leading to a "redemption" arc for Metal. Which is a concept that I love (my favorite Sonic fanfics explore this concept), but yeah, not likely to go anywhere nowadays. Though I will give one counter-argument to using this side of Metal: Shadow exists nowadays. Both Shadow and Metal Sonic showing in-depth characterization would mean there are two "anti-Sonic" characters. The characters are different enough that the franchise could handle it; but, again, the franchise seems disinterested nowadays in in-depth characterization, so SEGA's probably just defaulting to the "safer" idea of just having "one anti-Sonic be an anti-hero, the other just be a badnik." Meh.
Sonic can be beautifully introduced in Sonic 4 in both terms of origin and motivation. For example, Metal can be created in alternative timeline, where Eggman won't use Sonic’s needle against Gerald, but just push him down into vacuum space. And Eggman stay as a psycho dude, so he won't say Stone that he is his friend. Then Eggman will stole Tails teleport ring and escape to the anotger side of Earth. While without ring Knuckles won't be able to save Sonic and Taiks as it was in Sonic 3, so Knuckles will die or seriously damaged by saving his friends. Whike Shadow without Eggman help won't be able to push Eclipse Canon on a needed distance, so explosion will reach a part of Planet, which wilk make it a dead-side of Earth ( that actually can look like locations from a Bad Future in Sonic CD ). And after all of that Eggman can go even crazier and create Metal Sonic, as he think that enemy which look like Sonic ( Shadow was quite similar ) will be a hard time for blue blur. And Eggman use Sonic’s needle as a core for Metal Sonic, but now Eggman create, but now Eggman do his best and Sonic can't steal his energy back as it was in Sonic 1. So Metal get high AI, he destroy Sonic, but then Metal think that he don't want to be just a tool in someone's hands, he want be something more, so Metal kill Eggman ( Metal can even think that it what real Sonic will do ). Metal can also decide to destroy Sonic from every timeline to become the only Sonic in entire existence. Metal create army of copies of himself and update himsel to Neo form. Also, Metal can even want to stole Sonic’s life, mean create friends for himself like Sonic has, that is why Metal can create Metal Tails or Knuckles, but he won't be able to understand why he can't feel joy of friendship, because Sonic and his friends have story behind their friendship, whike Metal can only force his creations to love him. Metak even can want to became a new hero for humanity, but he will use waaaay more brutal methods for that, because Metal can't understand how to feel mercy, especially to villains. Metal in movie can actually think that he is the real Sonic, while every other Sonic innany other timeline is just a mory primitive copy of Metal himself, he can be the best Sonic ever and he is the real Sonic. So Metal Sonic in movie can easily be a top tier villain among all other Sonic movies ( I am not saying that Gerald, Eggman or Shadow are bad, tgeu are great, but Metal has a huge to he even better ). Not to mentioned that Metal is robot with high intelect and unpredictable actions, he can be not just strong, but also even scary ( he is know every step what heroes gonna do ), even phrase "Long time no see, Sonic" from Sonic Heroes can sound a littke more ironic, of we already know that Metal beat Sonic in another timeline. Its also interesting who can voice Metal Sonic for movie, of course Metal is cool even when he is silent, but he won't lose any peace of charisma if he will get a voice ( especially brutal robotic voice, as it was in Sonic Heroes )

I imagine his thinking being like
“I AM the real Sonic. I exist to BE Sonic. But this… tells me that I can never be Sonic. If I cannot be the one thing I believed myself to be, then who am I supposed to be?”
Mecha Sonic's fate would almost be the same, but he eventually had a happy ending.
I LOVE HYPER METAL SONIC AAAAA!
Maybe it’s time to give Metal his own team Sonic. He’s got a metal Knuckles and a metal tails. Sage could help them form their own kind of bond. You could probably make a story that shows a new bond forge with Sage. Eggman’s family is getting bigger. The story potential could be huge.
Yes! If they keep Sage around I would love to see them interact.
Or potentially Metal Sonic, Orbot & Cubot and Sage. Team Empire, maybe?
I really hope Sonic movie 4 adapts the events of Sonic OVA. Hyper Metal Sonic is probably my favourite version of him
we should get a stowy where metal survives, repair himself and coexists with fake sonic
I'm still convinced Metal is Bad Future Sonic that's been roboticized and brought back in "present" time
Sonic movie stuff
Can metal sonic be presented and written well when there's more than 1 of him in that scene in the sonic movie?
"Metalic Year of sonic"
I know a version of Metal Sonic who ended up in this same situation, but actually returned. From the Archie Comics, there was a Metal Sonic who dies in a volcano, and returned as a robot named Shard. The Original Metal Sonic, now upgraded. You should read about that, because it is an interesting way to see Metal Sonic in a different way… a What If Metal Sonic Turned Good scenario.
Until the Genesis Wave had to reset the timeline and Archie Comics rebooted…
9:42 And Do You Know What Else Is Massive?! >:3
You may know everything im going to do, but that's not going to help you because i know everything you're going to do... STRANGE ISNT IT!?
Sonic movie 3 spoilers:
If there's anything that I got out of the Knuckles series, it's that they aren't afraid to reference the Sonic OVA, even if it was just giving Knuckles his iconic hat. My hope is that Sonic movie 4 will pay homage to the Sonic OVA in how they portrayed Metal.
Did you know, Sonic has a cameo in Neon Genesis Evangelion?
The metals and mechas are my favorites in the series
Movie 4 is about to go hard
I raise you STC Metallix, and the Brotherhood.
Easily the best Sonic movie

THANK YOU :D
You mean death battle for the best metal?
No, I prefer character depth over a powerscaling contest lmao
