    I was in 3rd grade in McKeesport, Pa., just outside of Pittsburgh listening on my transistor radio when Maz hit the only game 7 walkoff in World Series history. Up until game 7, the Pirates had won 3 close games and the Yankees had won 3 absolute blowouts. Game 7 was a fairly normal game up until the bottom of the 8th inning. Find time to look that game up and watch the last inning and a half. You will see some of the craziest things happen one right after the other. A bad hop ground ball , a pitcher forgetting to cover first on a ground ball to the first baseman, a crazy Mickey Mantle play at first base in the top of the 9th, and Hal Smith and Bill Mazeroski hitting two of the most clutch home runs in baseball history. That game was nearly 63 years ago now and time fades it’s memory. But we here in Pittsburgh still celebrate it.

    Never will I forget Reggie Jackson's 3rd HR of the night in final game of 77 WS.
    When he came up for last at bat the entire stadium was chanting REGGIE, REGGIE, REGGIE while the scoreboard was flashing it. Then the scoreboard flashed "ONE MORE TIME". Me and my brother looked at each other shaking our heads. If he really did it again it would be like something out of a movie. To good to be true.
    First pitch "CRACK", drops the bat. Ball lands deep into centerfield bleachers. Reggie starts the slow jog into history.
    Now 40 years later and I can remember it like yesterday. Still get the goosebumps talking about it.

    When Joe Carter hit that home run, I was in front of HMV on Yonge Street, which was showing the game on their huge screens. The street was packed from one side to the other as far as you can see up and down the street. Giants fan here. I'm not going to get into cheating or steroids or greenies or the research that's been done showing how many of Bonds' homers wouldn't have gone out without the generally accepted effects of PEDs.
      The point is, Aaron breaking Ruth's record was a bigger deal. Ruth's record was sacred, and Aaron was a black athlete. It's not even comparable, what Bonds did to what Aaron endured.

    Gonna add one no one else has mentioned in the comments but Travis Ishikawa’s walk off 3 run homer to win the Giants the pennant in 2014 is one of the greatest home runs ever. Not just the significance it had on the situation and it eventually leading the Giants getting their third ring in five years, but Ishikawa’s story of being tossed around in the minors and considering retiring then the Giants picking him up and winning a ring with him is an inspiring one.

    Flip Mazeroski's game 7 walk-off with Carter's game 6 and thats a near perfect list. Game 7 > Game 6.

    • @JH-gf4cm
      @JH-gf4cm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brad Spontak I think that’s a fair argument but I think a key difference in favour of Carter’s home run was that the Jays were losing by 1 run when he hit it. There was 1 out, two runners on base and he had a 2-2 count when he hit the home run sealing a comeback win. I’m less familiar with Mazeroski’s home run but I think the score was tied when he hit his.

    • @bsputnik
      @bsputnik 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@JH-gf4cm I really do understand how it was an amazing moment in the game itself, and in the series. It is absolutely number 2 on my list. But my primary argument will always be that if Carter doesn't hit that home run, there is a game 7 to play.
      The game was indeed tied in 1960. But the game was bonkers up to that point. Seriously an amazing game, I recommend it (imagine a 9-8 World Series game with a 2.5 hr run-time!!!). The Pirates were down 7-4 in the bottom of the 8th. They scored 5 that inning, including a 3-run homer by Hal Smith that should be in this video if it is not (it's been a while). So the Yankees scored 2 in the 9th to tie! After that amazing comeback-to-a-lead in the 8th, to have that energy sucked away in the 9th, then the first batter hits a walk-off on the second pitch! That's awesome! Not to mention that the Series itself was a odd mix of the Yankees smashing the Pirates in their wins and the Pirates winning all close games.
      In historical context of the Championships, the Pirates hadn't won the Series since 1925. The Blue Jays had won the 1992 Series. Pirates were on a 33 year old revenge quest for getting Murderer Rowed by the '27 Yankees in the worst World Series of all time (that's how I see it as a modern fan anyway).
      And my final point: Name players on the 1960 New York Yankees and then name players on the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies. Even with that 30yr difference, most people can still name those Yankee greats in the midst of winning 3 titles in 5 seasons. Those end up being Hall of Fame numbers of "A lot" to "I'm pretty sure none."
      I'm a Pirates fan, I'm sure that much is clear. At least, I used to be....All we have is our history. Particularly this 20yr period between 1960 and 1980 (before I was born, mind you). So I'm biased and I get that. But I REALLY feel this is a case of "Carter's happened more recently and so it is more meaningful." The Pirates were in a longer drought, playing a much better team, winning a do-or-die game.
      I am willing to have conversations on this. Quite honestly it is a refreshing change. I'm used to arguing to New Yorkers about how Bobby Thompson's home run to lift New York over New York to go on to lose the World Series to New York is in no way ahead of Mazeroski's or Carter's. Nor is it ahead of any especially meaningful World Series home run. But I like to poke angry Yankees fans...

      @@bsputnik You make so many valid points and I simply cannot disagree with any one of them. But one really has to know the backstory like you do to appreciate it. Whereas Joe Carter's homerun is more iconic given the call "Touch 'em all Joe! You will never hit a bigger home run in your life" and the way Carter was running the bases, stomping home plate, pumping his fists while sprinting the bases, being lifted in the air by his teammates (what a perfect camera angle by the cameraman, just like Griffey's face being perfectly captured after being mobbed by his teammates in the 1995 ALDS after Edgar Martinez hit the walkoff double against the Yankees). In terms of importance, absolutely the Mazeroski home run far outweighs anything before or after. But I would rank Joe Carter or David Freese's home runs ahead of it simply because those are more iconic (its hard to watch black/white footage of games and shit camera angles) because even non-baseball fans can feel the emotion of those HRs

    • @bsputnik
      @bsputnik 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShengYu1995 I get what you are saying. I watched those games live and felt their impact as a fan of the sport. But in this sort of list, camera angles and HD vs. black & white become a different version of the modern vs old timey bias. I only have my dad's stories of how awesome '60 was. My most iconic Pirate moment is a play-in game. I feel '60 especially gets drowned out by the fact that it IS the Pirates, who have been mostly inconsequntial for two generations.
      I can't help but to think that even a non-Pirates fan can feel the moment watching the one and only, black & white view from behind home as Maz hits the ball, Yogi Berra chases it a bit before watching it go over the wall and seeing Maz round third being mobbed by fans/teammates. It's an iconic moment, just 60 years ago and not 30. One we didn't get to witness compared to one we did. One where most who witnessed it are now gone to one that is part of what made us a generation of baseball fans.
      My dad didn't see it in '60! Listened to it on a radio. Isn't that iconic in its own way?

    Gibson should be 1 or 2. Yes, it only won game 1 of the WS, but there's so much lore involved, with having 2 injured knees, to facing a pitcher that had been nearly unhittable in the playoffs, to facing a team that was labeled a juggernaut. As a home run on its own, I guess it could be down near the bottom of the list. But as a whole, it's one of the greatest moments in baseball, period.

Imagine bring jailed because people speculated you committed a crime. Bonds just adapted to the times. How can you take all that history Bonds provided and just act like it never happened. Also no one knows how far back the steroids went, when did they start in baseball? Maybe they only look out for it and started finding ways to test it in the 90s but it could have gone back as far as the seventies. In which Hank Aaron played. I'm a life-long Yankees fan, but it's reasonable to believe that Mickey's "563" foot homer was just conjecture. Yes, it went clear out of Griffith Stadium, but nobody was sure where the ball actually landed. That distance figure was come up with by the Yankees publicist, who left the park to try and find the ball. Ruth's is also conjecture, plus there is no footage of either so they don't make the list. For Ruth, the "Called Shot" in '32 would be first of his, IMO, but again, there is no definitive footage of it, or audio. IMO, Max's in '60 is first, because it was game 7, not game 6 like Carter, plus Joe had two runners on, so he didn't need to homer.

I barely watch sports any more because of that - sponsors, and advertisers should take note. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression.

      @@picksalot1 no need to be sorry, i should apologize for assuming everyone on the internet is looking for a cynical debate lol. i was just trying to state the facts of the situation. you do make a great point though lol i will watch regardless and i suggest you do the same. if we stopped watching for anything other than pure enjoyment we are cheating ourselves. once we learn how the world works as we age everything becomes annoying because we know the ins and out of how it works. i decided this year i wasnt going to let that stop my love for a sport or a game that ive either played or watched. boxing being the only one i stopped watching because of corruption. give it a shout. made me feel better just not caring about what happens behind the curtain and just enjoy what is

      Anthony Neil but that was the homer off Dennis Eckersley and the one that sunk the A’s for the rest of the series and on one good foot

      @@impittsburghpiratesfandont7867 that's a big negative. He had two pulled hamstrings. To me it's my number #1 I remember it like it was yesterday. He literally had zero good legs and hit it off of who at that time was the GOAT Eckersley. There is no way that should have happened. Gibson shoulda had a wheelbarrow to carry around his Brass Balls.

      @@anthonyneil2320 It was the drama of the entire thing. The A's were titans. Eckersley was so dominant. The Dodgers weren't supposed to be there, let alone win anything now without Gibson. Gibson was clearly hurt. And then there's the Vin Scully call. Gibson should be WAY higher than 8.
