Small Pond Repair and Renovation | Upgrading an Unsafe Backyard Pond the MDA Way

  • This small pond renovation in Knoxville, TN was visiting an old water feature that was not originally installed by Modern Design Aquascaping. John G had put a bid in for the original pond design, but ultimately did not get the job.
    The pond and waterfall was originally installed around 2012 and the water still flows. However, many of the pond rocks have slid into the pond and other rocks have become loose and wobbly. The pond owners were justifiably concerned with the safety of their grandchildren, guests, and themselves! It was time to upgrade the pond. The family in Knoxville are subscribers to our channel (you should subscribe as well) and have been watching our pond videos. They love our water features and want to upgrade their pond the Modern Design Aquascaping Way!
    Tristan Adams will take you through this small-grandchildren first-water feature renovation. While this project is called a repair and renovation, it is more of a pond redo. Renovating this water feature will go all the way down to the pond liner. Nearly everything is going to change with this pond and waterfall. All of the pond rocks are going to be removed, the pond will be reshaped and shelved, and a new pond liner and skimmer box will be installed.
    Tell us what you think of the Manual Drone Footage. Will it revolutionize water feature showcase videos?
    Be sure to catch Tristan’s GREAT building tips @11:00 about accommodating rocks and fish, and also a way to dig ponds to make setting your pond rocks easier.
    Like John G says, “Do something, just don’t do nothing!”

    One mistake I made when building our water feature was not clearing the grass and all away from the edges far enough. Grass started growing into it. I also in my effort to make it all look natural and hide the liner the liner got pushed down enough for water to leak out in some places. Nice job on you pond and video.

    Not bad guys, the only thing I think you should have added some more outcropping rocks in the landscape, to prevent the Ring of Pearls look around the edge and a small fish cave just in case they wanted to use some goldfish other than that good job!!

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea, we might could have used some more rocks. It’s always a great thing to be able to look back at each job and ask yourself what you could have done better (within budget) for the next time! Thanks for hanging with us ;)

  • @tedmihalca
    @tedmihalca 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great Job! I like how you were honest about the scope of the project! There's always the argument over bare lined ponds vs rocked and the latter is always a better option, not just because of the looks but also for durability and safety. UGHHHH those digging conditions though!!! Great end result and a great investment that will pay off for a long time!

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is tough for us to do these smaller projects- we tend to stay in the bigger realm. Rocking the small ones is harder to do for me anyways. Gotta love the Tennessee clay ;)

    LMAO over the drone footage....that was awesome! You always want stable rocks around your pond. You can think in your mind my kids or grandchildren will never try to walk on that rock....think again! Places that you would never think a child would try to get to...thats the one place they will go...lol. I learned the hard way about loose rock. Busted my own ass a couple of times. 😆 🤣 😂 God bless

  • @Waverlyduli
    @Waverlyduli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your design was a great resolution of your client's safty concerns about foot-step stability around the pond and aesthetically, well, two thumbs up, guys! (BTW, here in my state in Australia, by law, we have to have a full pool safty fence around any water body deeper than 12 inches in a front or back yard, can't have rocks, a tree or anything near the fence that might assist a small child in getting over the fence either and inspectors are strict. Naturally, all this makes designing the natural look a bit more challenging). Anyway, that pale yellow soil-rock mix that you said was so hard to dig at that site, we've got the exact same stuff miles away over here😁

    Big improvement! Ugh, we don't see much of that kind of "soil" around here, but we have had a few digs in similar ground, and it sucks. Good thing it's possible to reshape and compact it. Nicely done!

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      “Caliche is a layer-like accumulation of calcium carbonate that is deposited as part of the formation of soil in arid regions,” Stephen Reynolds of Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration says. “It represents material that was dissolved by water from the surface and the upper parts of the soil and then precipitated a meter or so down in the soil when that water evaporates.” OK I learned something today ;)

    Hey John, liked the pond way mucho. Great job, Tristan. Great job, MDA Team!
    I thought you guys blended the existing feature with the new seamlessly. It was a little rough, but from what I could gather based on the conversation we were privy to in the video, that was the card you were dealt and you played the best hand you could given the hand you ended up with.
    Tristan. Dude. I think you shaved another 3 months off my lifespan with not just holding that spider, which was bad enough in and of itself, but then you lost track of where the little beastie went!?!?!?!? 🤯 No! No! Ummm, Hell No!
