  • Why pay big money when you can build a pond skimmer for $40 ?! We show you how we built a small pond skimmer box step by step. We used stainless steel screws, washers, and nuts. Those were used to attach to two pieces of Lexan and pond liner to a 14 gallon Rubbermaid tub. This then housed a 2100 GPH Alpine pump which we found on Amazon:
    Alpine Corporation Alpine PAL2100 Cyclone Pump-2100 Fountains, Waterfalls, and Water Circulation Pond Pump, 2100 GPH, Black & Blue

    Alpine Tornado 2100 GPH Water Pump w/ 33 Ft. Cord, 11 Inch Tall
    by Alpine Corporation

    The installation of the 14 gallon rubbermaid actionpacker has 6x3 inch hole cut into the side and the Lexan sheets were used to build a gasket to sandwich the pond liner to the 14 gallon tote.

    A pond skimmer is designed to filter off the surface of the pond and floating leaves and debris before they can float to the bottom of the pond and decay and are critical to the life and maintenance of the pond.

    Just wondering if we put this straight inside the pond by putting some stones and bringing it to the level where we want it to be… I mean that way we don’t have to create a gasket or anything…. I guess it should work the same way. Correct me if I’m wrong

      Hey Amit,
      If the whole box is going to be under water all the time then that’s is fine. No gasket needed.

    Do you think you would need a gasket if you used seam tape to seal around the opening? I would use duct tape around the hole first to soften the edge.

      Hey Joseph,
      Water is SO pervasive, I think the gasket of Lexan is necessary. You could try tape, but personally, I don’t think it will work long term. I did not just use the Lexan gasket but also used the marine sealant. I think the gasket would also fail w/o the sealant. If you find a different way that works, be sure and let us know in the comments so readers can try other ideas.
      Thanks for the comment and for watching!

    how has this setup worked for you long term? I want to update my goldfish pond but wouldn't you want the pump pulling water from the bottom of the pond?

      Hey Brody,
      It's been working great. Doesn't pull from bottom but skims the top..
      Thx for watching!

      Don’t remember exact size, but stainless will limit rust.

    Is lexan another name for plexiglass? I have some plexiglass on hand and want to use it for making the face plate.

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. Lexan is a very strong type of plexiglass.

    What about a filter net for leaves?

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Trista,
      I do have small mesh by the entrance. Plus I cover the pond in the fall to eliminate most leaves.
      Thx for the comment.
