Hey.. i have just been given mah jong for christmas. I wanted to play the new game of mahjong but cant work out where the extra tile comes from

It's a random tile that you add on your own.

The extra tile is an honour ( yes the proper way to spell that word is with a “u”) tile

luck-based, very slight decision if you get the wild card

100% luck based. However, add in more wild tiles and there should be more decision making.
Add in other tiles to make powerup. There is already a game that is similar to this using playing cards.

This is not so much 'New Way of Playing Mahjong' as it is 'New Game Played Using Mahjong Tiles'. It's fun for killing time, that's for sure.

How do you know which of the other two players gets the blank tile?

I assume it goes in clockwise order of whoever puts it down.

I feel like the Japanese will somehow find a way to incorporate riichi, tsumo and ron, yaku, dora et cetera into this esoteric variant.

This has absolutely nothing to do with mahjong, you don't even take strategic decisions. Sure it's relaxing to watch but I don't think that this is fun to play.

Don't be stupid and have fun! It doesn't matter how you play Mahjong, it's just a variant like many other games, really!
