Based on your evidence, why isn’t farmed salmon banned? It shouldn’t even be sold. I hate how it’s so deceiving and hard to eat healthy in America. UGH!
That’s exactly my thought. If it’s so bad how come every place I go to like Costco , even Whole Foods sell farm salmon lol. It just doesn’t have as much nutritions as wild salmon but it’s still good to eat.
Im so fed up with not knowing if my food is healthy that Im literally all researching how I can raise my own salmon, it’s honestly ridiculous that every food product in this country is tainted and mislabeled.
Wild caught sockeye salmon is my preferred seafood. I rarely buy farm raised. I'm not sure if it is just in my head, but I feel the wild caught salmon even tastes better! It certainly is more visually appealing. The downside is that it is rather expensive where I live in north central Minnesota. But then again, everything I buy now is expensive. Trying to eat healthy seems expensive, but I'm actually not spending as much money on groceries as I used to. That's mainly because I buy healthy ingredients rather than convenient processed foods. My OMAD routine helps some also. Thanks for the informative video. I always enjoy them!
I get it at Morey's Fish Market in Brainerd, Minnesota. They have a wide variety of wild caught that is available at various times throughout the year. Wild caught is not always available there, but I find it the most reliable source to date.
If you can't afford fresh wild salmon, you can buy it frozen or canned. Most frozen and canned salmon is wild and labelled as such. Also, consider cheaper fatty fish such as tuna, mackerel and sardines, which are also high in omega 3.
Mackerel, Marlin, Shark, Swordfish, and Big Eye Tuna have high mercury levels. My wife was told to avoid these during pregnancy. If you like tuna, eat Albacore or Yellow Fin.
There’s a local seafood store in Australia that i live close too that does fish and chips but also has wild sockeye salmon in the freezer for those who want it
Really interesting video, however maybe you shouldn't be sponsored by a company that sells wild salmon on a video talking about differences between farmed and wild salmon. It would be easy to believe you are being influenced in what you say because you are being paid by one side.
You didn't even mention the dangers of Fish Farms to wild Salmon!! Not very long ago, Farmed Atlantic Salmon of Norway caused unbelievable mortalities of Pacific Salmon in British Columbia!! Thank you for being honest regarding this subject!!
Where I live we don't have wild caught salmon. They just don't sell it. So, should I not eat salmon altogether? What's best to replace it with? I'm trying to build nutrient dense anti inflammatory diet and menu. Trying to figure out my staples, and 'once in a while not gonna kill you' does not sound like a staple...
I never really thought about farmed or wild caught salmon before. I usually buy a pack labelled as wild salmon but not sure if it is actually caught in wild. Thank you for your informative video kait.
Hi there, I have a question. When I'm in Whole Foods or New Seasons Markets, they have a color-coded rating system for their meats/fish ... green being the best rating and yellow medium. Their wild caught is usually rated yellow and some of their farmed are rated green / best rating. Do you know anything about why this is? It is very confusing to me because I consider these health food stores that know what's best, so why are they rating their farmed better than their wild? Are they fed a better diet than typical farmed?
Hello, fish scientist here! You're shopping at the right place for fish, that's for sure! Whole Foods actually investigates all the farms and fisheries they source from to make that rating system. Their science is relatively high quality and trustworthy. Some fish farms are better than others, just like cow and chicken farming! Some feed very high quality feed, some keep reasonable densities, and some farm fish on land which actually prevents a lot of damage to the environment and allows them to control the health of the fish better. The farms that do all or most of those things are rated green by Whole Foods. Some fisheries are terrible - they catch a lot of non-target fish and kill them, they have labor abuse issues, they dump trash off the boats, and/or they travel long distances on boats that use diesel and release a lot of greenhouse gases. Some fisheries use huge nets that kill mammals or endangered species. Whole Foods, being responsible, does not rate these as green despite the salmon being good for you. Farmed salmon still has high levels of omega-3, it just has higher omega-6 than wild salmon (and this ratio also depends on the farm!). So farmed salmon is still good for your health and brain! If it's between buying high quality farmed salmon at Whole Foods and buying no salmon (because people often just refuse to buy fish at all when there is confusion about healthiness), the farmed is a million times better for you. Also, fun fact - unless you have a commercial freezer, you need to buy farmed fish if you want to make sushi at home. Wild fish are full of parasites that can make you sick unless the fillet is frozen way beyond regular freezers can do. Lastly, notice that this video features paid promotion - for ButcherCrowd, a company that sells wild-caught seafood (and other meat). Always check the funding source and ask yourself, how could this impact what they say? You're doing great at thinking critically based on your great questions, considering the sponsorship angle is just another tool you can use!
I had no idea that the farmed salmon was grey before adding colors! It totally make sense... I love sushi however the salmon is likely farmed... I eat Tuna Sushi.
I just realized I bought a pack of farmed raised atlantic salmon from whole foods.....I'll definitely switch over to wild caught next time. Thanks for the nutritional information!
I'll study salmon for a few years but what gets me is when it be pink salmon in the grocery stores and it still says wild caught and it's as cheap as form raised.
I never knew what you said about the lack of regulation on fish farms. If that's true in Australia, it's probably true in the U.S. Regulation is the Devil the U. S. However, I believe fish monger have to label wild caught fish as so, and it is usually frightfully expensive. Wild Alaska salmon goes for at least $22/lb, and I can't afford that, so I eat salmon rarely.
Great explanation Kait.. Thanks.. Wild caught salmon is hard to find outside of a can.. There is some, frozen, from China but I won't knowingly eat anything that comes from China. Pretty much all salmon in the local groceries (US) is from Chile- Atlantic salmon.. Maybe I need look harder- there might be some wild caught outside of China.

Nah WILD LIFE is the way to go I’m tryna live to see my kids have kids 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Here i been the whole time thinking im healthy buying farmed salmon…… no wild salmon around here unless its frozen in a box
Frozen fish is perfectly fine. All fish, unless you catch it yourself or get it fresh from the dock, it was already frozen. The fish wouldn’t last the trip to the supermarket without being frozen, so that “fresh” fish is thawed fish. The frozen fish stayed frozen and was never thawed
OK...I am not in Australia. Now what?
😞 I never purchase ' Farm Raised' fish 🐟
🙏🙏
Nope. Like most people, I can't afford a mail order meat/fish.
What about canned salmon?
Canned is 👍
Well. You just ruined my lunch. I hate soy and that’s all I have to hear.
Farmed salmon is too grease for me
🥴🥴
Maybe you should research fortified shampoo for fast hair growth.
Trust me! Is a swear word lying word
Jesus Christ , I think I will stick to eggs
There is taste wise, farm raised has a mushy texture to me. 🤢
😩😩
I am the only one that hates salmon.
I heard women shouldn't eat fried fish
🤔
You forgot to mention two things: wild salmon has more mercury than farmed salmon. You also forgot to mention that many people, I am one of them, find farmed salmon tastes better than wild salmon
Your statements are totally wrong. If you have ever eaten fresh caught wild salmon. Farm salmon tastes like caned tuna.
Love salmon. I personally HATE people who fry it!
How do you cook it? 😮 Or just eat raw?
