So, as a long time horror fan/connoisseur/historian, this is actually a pretty interesting question for me. While you might be on to something, or at least the concepts you've mentioned play at least some part into it, I think it's a bit more complex and nuanced.
What I can say is themes of cannibalism and consumption have been present in cinema a lot longer than most people realize, especially as it concerns horror. It's actually been around pretty much from the very infancy of the genre, even beyond cinema and into literature and visual art.
One thing to note is there is almost always some aspect of animalism in cannibalistic horror tropes, even and especially in the vampire and lycanthrope subgenres. There's usually something very primal at work. I think it plays into a very specific existential fear: that at the end of the day, despite a higher intellect and self awareness, we ARE animals, and predatory ones at that, and it is not at all difficult for any among us to give into that predatory instinct. It's the idea that we might not be quite as evolved as we think we are, and when all is said and done, are still driven by the very basic and instinctual needs of every other animal on the planet.

Cannibal Holocaust and the original The Hills Have Eyes are the first works to come to mind when I think of cannibal plots. I think, like all horror genres and tropes, they’re deeply layered. In its most true form cannibalism is a unique man vs man conflict, a tale as old as time. There’s fear of the other/xenophobia and isolation/alienation in addition to the primal nature of man that you point out. Not to mention that it’s a much more tangible thing to be afraid of when compared to zombies and ghosts, so audience reactions are likely to be more visceral.
This is an interesting take in the video, but I don’t think it tracks. Plus, he talks about vampires more than he does cannibals, and those are two very distinct horror genres. Vampires are sexy, cannibals are savages.

I took a whole class on Slavic vampire lore in college. Some of the very old stories were of vampires who would come into a town. They would be the mysterious tall dark and handsome traveler that the woman fell for. So instead of letting your women be taken by strangers, stories would circulate about how they were actually monsters and it gave the villagers a reason to kill outsiders.
One story in particular was about a widow. She claimed her husband was rising from the grave in the middle of the night to visit her. Now, this is in a time when women were not allowed to remarry. The villagers burst in in the middle of the night to slay the vampire husband, only to find his friend or brother sleeping with her instead. They created this story that it was the dead husband so that she could get away with moving on.
A lot of vampire lore is about accepting the "other" in society. We can see the domestication of vampires over the years, where they're not just bloodthirsty Vlad The Impalers, But actually become relatable. A few authors use it to explore the acceptance of homosexuality.
Now that vampires have almost completely been domesticated, I've thought for about a decade that zombies are the next source. With movies like Warm Bodies, TV shows like z Nation, we see zombies are the new "other" that are slowly being accepted.
I think your analysis of craving intimacy is also an interesting thought. We can also see consumerism of humans through social media. By watching your videos, in a way, I am consuming you.
Well that was creepy. On that note I will end this rant because you probably haven't read this much of it anyway.

Zombies have a very different vibe though, as a matter of fact it's the exact opposite of vampires as said here. In regards to cannibals and vampires there is intimacy. But with zombies it's pure hostility.
It's like one is saying I want to connect people because I am lonely and the other is saying I don't want to connect to people because they are demonic.

@@j.d.1856 True, but again I have to point out there is a completely different audience for warm bodies compared to the crowd for the walking dead. Warm bodies is very popular among female readers in particular, same with all the peculiarly weird romance coming out these days. My theory is that it's women who are primarily touch starved and are craving for emotional connection and intimacy while for dudes it's seems hostility and distrust towards society is way more common. A very interesting thing if I would say so.

@@necrosteel5013 It depends on the movie. The Hannibal Lecter movies don't really follow such a formula. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies are more complicated with the original being an allegory for the meat industry and the second one being a horror comedy with all the other sequels being gorefests, but the cannibals they feature are a twisted version of a family. The Hills Have Eyes has more animalistic cannibals I'm pretty sure. Other cannibal movies exist but they're not in the limelight.

Never related to cannibalism or anything disgusting like that, it was actually quite innocent cause as a child I imagined it sort of a white light from both of us merging, but never really understood what it all was as a child. Perhaps you're on to something, because there's definitely an element of that concept.

I recently watched a clip of that serial killer Dahmer, he said the reason why he ate his victims was to keep them close to him. It seems as though even a charming person can struggle to make connections. So, in a way, even in crowded rooms, some people might feel isolated. The problem is rooted in our inability to develop skills to maintain healthy connections.

Humans must be close to God since we are created after his image. If we try to deny him, the ever-growing void in our hearts will not stop growing. We are made to depend on him because we are based on his image. Metropolitan Nicholas of Medogaia, who studied at Harvard and M.I.T. where he received his Masters of Arts and Masters in Science, and went on to receive his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, said an excellent point regarding your statement: "And also, the danger is not that man descended from animals, but rather we we end up like them."
No one denied evolution. It's all around us. However, the idea that all life forms descended from a common ancestor is yet to be seen. Life is extremely complicated, and even if you have all the necessary chemicals for life, it doesn't yield life.
Another line of evidence is the fact the universe has a beginning. There needs to be a creator. Something that doesn't have a beginning or an end. Our universe has so many constants that are fine-tuned to the universe and our planet.
According to astrophysicist Dr. Hugh Ross, "If our universe had not expanded at precisely the right speed at its origin, life on Earth would not have been possible. Stephen Hawking has calculated that if the rate of the universe's expansion one second after the Big Bang had been smaller by the minutest amount, the universe would have collapsed into a fireball."
There are three explanations for the universe, either we are in a simulation, which results in an infinite paradox of what created the universe since the creators of the simulation may be in a simulation themselves. The Quantum field or the multiverse (Multiple Universes) is the "creator" and, by random chance, was able to create our infinitely complicated universe out of infinite possible universes, and by chance, all of the physical constants are precisely right. This means you must believe that a lifeless, unintelligent, unconscious field gave way to all the life on Earth.
Or there is a God who is supernatural, incredibly powerful, eternal, omnipresent, timeless and changeless, immaterial, personal (The impersonal can't create the individual), necessary (everything depends on him), intelligent(Non-intelligence cannot create intelligence), and purposeful.
I got this information from Timeless Truth in Truthless Times by George Bassilios.
May Jesus Christ bless you on your journey toward salvation.

Added theory: Vampirism is so romanticized from the vampire side of things as a metaphor or warning about people with predatory traits. Think about it toxic relationships start with one person crossing a "small" boundary ie if Edward drinks Bella's blood a tiny amount. But then the toxic person keeps returning asking for more to a point where the other one has let them crossed bigger boundaries over time. That feeling of your time and dignity being "drained" away like blood.
I will say I am surprised that Hollywood hasn't romanticized other horror genres. Sure we got werewolves vampires etc but what about sci-fi mad scientists? Think about it a misunderstood scientist is on a path to save humanity from an apocalypse, a pandemic etc. but on this path it's more self destructive to a point where they're either losing themselves on a problem that doesn't have a solution or the solution itself requires them to lose themselves.

I'm Norwegian and even though cannibalism isn't as popular here, vampires and wherewolfs definitely where, it's also pretty popular in anime so I don't think it's mostly and American phenomenon, even though the focus on serial killers and true crime seams pretty American. Personally I think the vampire fascination is an exploration of evil and good, someone forced to be evil by their own nature, and wether or not they some slither of morality despite that. Vampires are often put in the trope (especially in teen literature) of "monsters that doesn't want to be monsters". Personally I devide between fictional cannibalism some thing I can handle and even enjoy stories sentured around it, I was a Twilligth and Vampire diaries fan, I was also a fan of tokyo ghoul, but even the idea of watching "silence of the lambs" makes me uncomfortable. "Real" cannibalism has allways freaked me out. For me the difference is the reason, one is the only means they have of survival and the other is just gross and terrible with no reason what so ever.

I know this because during SARS epidemic in Hong Kong, there was a surge of horror movies that people were looking for, it was a time when people are depressed and have no idea what their livelihood would be like, and they didn't look for any other type of entertainment other than the horror genre. Bloodsucking monsters and cannibalism both predate the modern concept of the Western World. While I can see your argument, I dont know how valid it is. Horror films, especially those featuring cannibalism, are often scary because the protagonist is framed as prey. Being prey is an uncomfortable thought when you are an apex predator, and the more you see yourself in the character being hunted, the scarier the thought becomes. As to the steamier genres involving things like vampirism, I'd argue those fantisies have less to do with desiring emotional connection and more to do with wanting to be so desireable as to inspire carnal hunger in others.

Vampires have shown in sexual context since 1897 when Dracula came out. Stokers Drac was a sexual predator but, it linked the two in the publics eye moving forward. This sexual predation is the basis of vampires in romance. Even before this vampire literature flourished in England in the early 1800s with works like The Vampyre; A Tale in 1813. Ibeit early depections were a bit more spooky than twilight.
There are many excellent papers and articles about how Vampires changed from horrifying monster to what we have today. This is a poetic interpretation and I agree with the sentiment that we are more distant than ever. I dont think vampirism in media is a distinct outward expression of this as it has been going on for near 200 years and is a cultural mainstay.

Dracula was not merely a response and was not born out of a simple misogyny. The characters are transgressive Infact mainly speaking against the restrictive sexualilty of the Era. Stoker himself was likely homesexual. Read his intesnsely homoerotic letters to his dear friend Walt Whitman and note He wrote Dracula one month after his friend Oscar Wilde was imprisoned for being homosexual It is a masterwork of the genre that was inspired by Carmilla in many ways. In the short story "Draculas Guest" Stoker pays homage to Le Fanu showing respect to his predecessor.
Carmilla was way ahead of its time, especially in its depections of Lesbians. To me it is debatably a better story and certainly a closer one to the vampire romance we see today. But, by no means does that mean you should reduce an authors famous work to a mere response.

Romantic vampires were popularized by bram stokers dracula of a highclass man living among us and preying on us. Stoker gsve inspiration to all the romantic vampires we have today. From lestat and his interview, to edward and his twilght. It has nothing to do with the eating. Thats why the scenes of vampire feeding is rare in these novels vs a standard vampire setting. Its about the ultimate bad boy. Immortal, hot, terror of the night that csn be reasoned with.
Of all the classical monsters, vampires are one of three types of monsters that have human level intelligence while being the monster. Vampires, demons, ghosts. All three have far more romace media around them any other type of monster. But vampires take the cake because demons are universally just non human based evil without question in media and you can't touch a ghost. Vampires were human, typically get associated with wealth and boredom only doing things that catch there interest and its hot for the view when the hot thing that got there attention is a story of desire.
Thats also why romance media for monsters isnt directed towards men mostly. We arent the twrget deomgraphic. Male vampire media keeps them as just monsters.

In my 15 years of media work, I've come to realize that most events and developments don't simply manifest out of chaos at random. Instead, most of what we see (world events and culture) is carefully orchestrated, designed and planned by other people. The American invaders didn't introduce rock 'n' roll, jazz, chewing gum and blue jeans in occupied Germany on a whim. They were tasked to do so by the CIA. Creating a market for their products, yes, but mostly inseminating this foreign culture with their own. "Win the hearts and minds" is not just a slogan. So, when you see a wave of cannibalism movies, there is a reason for it.

I don't know if it's worldwide, but I live in the USA, and I've lived in the north west, south east, Midwest and south west. Everywhere I've gone people share this "hole in their heart" or "empty" feeling. As if "something's missing"
I've seen and heard of it being filled or numbed with addictions, obsessions, and other harmful things or activities.
If it's a worldwide thing, I believe it's the place we keep our God. And only feels empty when we displace our God.
If it's just a western, north American majority type experience, I believe it's something we are taught to feel. We hear about it from family members or friends- how "something's missing". Then we begin to apply that feeling or belief to our own life.
We then fill it with an addiction or obsession. One of which would be love, or a desire to be so connected to someone we can always "feel" them, physically and emotionally.
we all want to be recognized and remembered. The bigger you are, the tougher it is to forget you. The older and more prolific you are, the more people's lives you 'touch'- the more people there will be to remember you.
Again it's similar to vampirism. I can turn everyone, or just feed off them- and both those acts make you feel more "alive", and ensure your victims will remember you. They will pass your name on to others. Your fame or at least notoriety will increase.
You will be remembered.. That explains forms of cannibalism for me. It's nice to see you broach this topic.

When you examine human history, you begin to see that cannibalism is far from a strange deviation; it’s almost a norm. Various tribal cultures have ritualised forms of cannibalism, ranging from devouring ones defeated enemies to consuming ones dead ancestors as a symbol of respect. In fact, up until very recently, humans seem to have committed cannibalism far more frequently than any other mammalian species. Perhaps its manifestation in arts and culture is simply the natural bubbling over of a terrifyingly human urge that society takes great measures to suppress.

The thing about "act of cannibalism" being intimate is pretty much right. I've heard from many people of both genders and different sexualities that they want to bite the person they love in a passionate intimate setting like sex.
If we go further into fiction and compare vampires and cannibals stories and their respective settings (romantic and horror), then we could draw a parallel between them where vampire's bite to the neck is gentle and intimate and act of eating flesh could be considered repulsive and disgusting, like rape.
It is a really funny brain-scratcher, but I, personally, don't like neither of those genres, so I haven't noticed such influx of cannibalism theme.

most times its for hunger and since our body is suffering through malnutrition we probably at that time were cannibalist. But times have changed and people reunited and main source of nutrition is provided to us by poultery and such. We are not prone to drinking other blood, as blood is completely not pure as it contains other stuff (can't go in detail). it is basically just not pure to drink and is just better drinking a cow's blood instead. Vampires are different since they are just fiction characters that are put above the human in the food chain, since it is not possible as we are truly the top of the food chain and below god and angels.

It’s so isolating in modern day society, it’s easier to pretend you have a thousand friends online than it is to have a group of ten people who genuinely care about you and have a deeply exercised and applicable need for 2 way street connection. We have been motivated for years to idealize the idea that only you can do it alone, no one is coming to save you. But what if we start asking people who like us are willing to work just as hard within their limits to better themselves and those around them to define what it is that they deem a perfect society should be. Sorry for the word wall, question I wanna ask is, what’s the significance/meaning if/any of your mask?

When it comes to vampires, this romantize/sexual connection has always been historically there. Vampires have been traced back to even in books such as Dracula to be "Beautiful". Mostly because demonic entities in Christian based mythos and lores (vampires, succubus, and incubus, etc.) Where meant to represent the desire of lust.
Vampires are known for their ability to abducted and seduce women they capture. (Most medeval and later 17th/18th century stories of demons related to demons having sex with women to create "Satan's children". )
For the reason it's become such a common love story now is... Well I think we can kinda blame Twilight for taking this mostly non consental relationships with Vampires and turning it into a romance story into the mainstream.

Iirc vampires appearing in the sort of romantic trope isn't about that at all. There was a study about what type of sexual fantasies men and women have, and apparently for the majority of women it was something along the lines of: "Dangerous man (pirate, vampire, werewolf, etc.) falls for a young, fare, modest damsel and she changes him". Beauty and the Beast type of thing. Women dig something that's dangerous and has a p*nis basically...it also helps that vampires somehow got traits attatched to them such as fair/pale skin, charm, status, wealth etc.

I think your on the right track on this. And this could go further of what this actually means. Art can be an expression that has been suppressed by our moral western thinking and its judgements. That as we cant have these desires that make us happy. We subvert ourselfs with advices that not are needs, to be by ourselfs. This long process and argument base dramas we see around our social media. This makes things very hallow and meaningless in result, but our needs and desire if connection and intimacy is not getting what it needs. We see people with relationships, u could call that envy as scrolling through, but just to avoid what upset us becouse people say. "Don't let that upset you, it shouldn't." But it dose. Especially with people that in their 30s that cant complain. Talking to people isn't easy. You can say the right things, how's you, what's up. Hello. Red flags. Do or don't, all on Internet that just are psychologically damaging then helpful. But to know exactly what's going on. That's the main thing. West isolated. For me with stream deamas of its monologue of disconnecting values and the way they present and dress. So unrealistic to who I am. My sister watch these for perhaps giving scoring point arguments in later strategy, idk. But it doesn't seem healthy of relationships or a forming of bond that's for sure. Or just to distract themselves. It just things look harder and seeing a straight face that plays by that book of infulence to go. "Oh that's sweet, but I've got things doing busy today." 😃 while knowing I've done a red flag. Red flags are just poles and sentiments of dictating rather then compassion connection. Respecting this disconnecting value of society. Only is amplify on ticktok of how people feel. Its all oh ah thst just.... nothing just a bunch of moaners... but I think the amount of likes and comments says more then anything. Tiktok is a non-western platform people go on, and notice the amount that is on there talking about relationships and feeling disconnected, while on the other end of the west platform facebook, instagram, twitter, dont get me started on twitter.... that's just a pile of dog crap.... with no sentiment of union by division.... is lack of talking about how people feel, almost presenting themselves with a front then how they actually are. I don't use ticktok all the time but only for uploading comics and stuff but I them and how people feel. On Instagram its usually giving disconnecting values advices, be by yourself, make money, let go, this that.... and on the comments conform to it not becouse they agree, but becouse to conform to feel accepted that maybe in hope that connection will be found in this connecting society. With the vampire thing or cannibalism that is a good analogy of the arts that maybe what people feel. Twilight for example and it's challanges of trying to find connection. Some people went with fifty shades of gray, thats anther one, how far has it gone? How people feel that suppress themselves for society expectations. Not going by the needs of the person itself but what the person dose for society wants. Being the product.
Anther one I could be stretching this is zombies m, are they just representation of people, society, dead people wondering around. That eats us to turn us into them. Just a dead coperate entity wondering without a soul just do. And we kill the zombie by eradicating what will distory our humanness. The Walking dead is one example where your not facing zombies but people, feeling disconnected from people and our disagreements. What all this comes down too with all relations and the arts that have been made to distract ourselves is that one person in our life's that meant the world too us personally and no one else, and it was unrequited.
The beloved never understood this as only being a form of layered interpretation if other things, but the xreator ir the who made these arts stems from those bases of understandung and circumstances what they private wiled of that love they have if them that is not understood or understood but adviced, and it's a private thing. That is manifested psychologically into works if art that continue to expand and why we are drawn somehow, somewhere we are drawn too them. Becouse it relates. Other shows that give off an ideology or or some presentation don't and that come off as political, artifical and lack human needs and how people feel. That we all want to deserve to be loved by the people love, be that of strangers of afar, close or someone you know.
This only what I'm going to say here, but if anyone has played metal gear solid v: the phantom pain. Huey, as a very unlikeable character dose give something very important about people when their lives don't go their way, they latch on too other things. Dogs, emblems, or as what Dimond Dogs do, latch on too Big Boss, a bigon of light that challanges the status qou. That are somehow, somewhere be not just forgiven but be reavalued by society that society made a mistake of people circumstances and there were hearts there all along but were thrown away or discarded as a joke, a slur, slander, a fact by others that think in the social context.
And could this be true with people in society that distract themselves with other things that connect somewhere too their circumstances.

Vampires have actually played an important role in cinema since their conception, from research I’ve done on Scandinavian depictions of the trope. They tend to be used as an allegory for outsiders who feed on society and can also symbolize those born with conditions they have no control over. But you offer an interesting interpretation, I enjoy the insight but would appreciate some acknowledgment of the research already done into topics you discuss. Not to get preachy, but I think it’s okay for not everyone to have a novel idea. Sometimes people with specialized skill sets have already looked into things and it’s okay to stand on the shoulders of giants when making our conclusions.
