War drums are beating on the border between Russia and Ukraine. In fact, Ukraine has been at war with Russia since 2014, when Russian troops seized the Crimean peninsula and supported separatist rebels in the Donbas. Now, however, Putin has deployed more than 100,000 troops to the border, and that could trigger open warfare.
Right now, the United States and Russia are in negotiations to avoid a full-scale conflict, and it is impossible to imagine what will happen. But why is Russia so interested in Ukraine, what is its narrative, and what are the real reasons? In this video we tell you.

The word “Ukraine” does NOT mean “borderland” or “edge”. Ukrainians did not define themselves in such an absurd manner.
“Край” “krai” means LAND. The most credible understanding is that it means “the land that belongs to Ukrainians”, or, their “native or home land.”
The Russian propaganda and some foreign interpretations of Ukraine meaning “borderland” simply do not pass the factual, common sense, and reason smell tests.
Let’s drop the Muscovite favourable version of the etymology of the name of the country already.
Not even Moscow challenges the fact that the name for the land was given to it by Ukrainians themselves. The name is not of foreign origin - unlike the name for Russia which is Greek. Ukrainians did not see themselves as on the “border” of any place, but HOME.
The root “край” “krai”, which means land, can also be found in other words that indicate the same basic idea concept: a piece of a larger whole.
Typical uses of "krai" in Ukrainian:
    ridnyi krai: native land
    dalekyi krai: far land
    kraievyd: scenery, landscape
    krayaty: to cut/slice
It only makes sense that Ukrainians understood and meant “krai” to mean what their language defined it as, and that they understood their land as distinct from the others around it - not on edge of other.
    But there is more.
In Ukrainian, the prefix "У" ("U") typically denotes an action with direction in space or transformation.
It’s also a preposition that denotes a direction in space, like English "in", "to".
So “Україна” in Ukrainian would not have meant on the edge, but IN or TO the homeland.
Ancient Ukrainians would have meant "In our land", or a Ukrainian traveller would mean, “We are returning to our land”, NOT “on the edge of others”.
If there was anything true to a false explanation of the etymology of the name Ukraine meaning "edge” or “border", the name of the country would be "Okraina".
In Ukrainian (and in Russian) this is a prefix that denotes an action on the edge of a larger whole.
Typical examples: околиця - outskirt, облямівка - edging, обшивка - cladding
Stop seeing UKRAINE through a Russian lens. Ukrainians existed well before Russians. Ukrainians named themselves, and they would not have done so in contradiction of their language, or in reference to others who didn’t even exist.

As a Ukrainian, thank you guys for telling about us to the world.
    But there are some mistakes:
Ukraine is not the poorest country in Europe since like 2016. In fact an average Ukrainian income is somewhere the same as an average Russian(640$ against 700$).
The name "Ukraine" doesn't mean "border", but simply "the country" or "the land". Think about it. Why would people of Kyiv Rus call the CENTER of their land a "border"? It doesn't have any sence.
Also, could you please make a video about the life of people in Donbass? Not a lot of people in the West realize how bad is the situation with human rights there. Russians have built an "Isolation"(Изоляция) concentration camp there. Ukrainians are being tortured and killed there almost every day, but noone is talking about it.

    @large_hadron_collider 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

There is so much wrong in this video, I don't even know where to start.
There were no "russians" (русские) at the time of Rus', the people were called "rusyns" (русини) or latinized version - "ruthenians".
The term russian was popularized during Stalin period, before that in Russian Empire era and even the first years of USSR (could be seen even on official USSR maps in 1920s), they were called velikorosy (великоросы).
During the most part of the last millenium ukrainians were known as rusyns or ruthenians. The term Ukraine (Україна/Вкраїна) was used at least from the 12th century (first mentioned in Kyiv Chronicle in 1187) to describe the homelands ("країна" means country).
Grand Duchy of Lithuania before uniting with Kingdom of Poland in 1569 was a country with majority ruthenian population, and ruthenian was the main language of documentation and writings on the most part of the territory.
When in 1721 Muscovy decided to rename itself to Russian empire, they took the name Rossiya (Россия), not Russia, because at the time everyone knew that the real Rus' and real rusyns live in what's now called Ukraine.
Cossacks never spoke muscovite language, and often even took translators when traveling to Moscow. The ruthenian language at the time of cossacks is simply old ukrainian, there are thousands of literary evidences, that's not even a debate.
I know it's hard to grasp for english speakers, because rusyn, ruthenian and russian all sound similair, but that's the whole point why Muscovy tries to hijack ukrainian history and make it their own, because Muscovy began as an outskirt of Rus' (which eventually became Ukraine, because the people of ancient Rus' never left the territory they inhabited), and they need ukrainian history to justify their own existence. Becuse todays Russia consists of dozens of nations which have very little in common, and is held together only by force and repression and the dream of great ancient history, which isn't even their own to begin with.
When the USSR was created, the republics borders were not drawn on a blank map, they represented the ethnic composition of territories at the time (just see the map of Ukrainian National Republic in 1918-1920).
Not only nobody gave Ukraine extra land during the creation of USSR, a lot of ethincally ukrainian territories (where ukrainians were the majority) were transfered to other republics - like Kuban region, city of Taganrog, Eastern Sloboda Ukraine, Starodub - to Russia or Brest region to Belarus, because Ukraine was millitary defeated by the communists.
So this whole video sounds like muscovite propaganda even if you doing it unintentionally.
Please consult some real historians before trying to teach everybody history that you know very little about.

NATO's expansion was not the issue, as we now know two months+ later. Besides, NATO has not expanded eastward since 2004, almost 20 years ago and Putin knew that Ukraine would not become a NATO member in the foreseeable future, during his lifetime anyway (but it might soon due to Putin's aggression). NATO expansion was an excuse proffered in some Russian propaganda and Biden knew this before the rest of us.
Ukraine is only about Putin's legacy and popularity, his delusions of rebuilding his beloved USSR. He was offered the chance to negotiate his NATO concerns, e.g. inspections in NATO’s eastern nations to show no missiles were present, but he refused because he figured he could just take what he wanted and show who is boss in Eastern Europe. It wouldn't have stopped with Ukraine either. Now he is being taught a lesson.

Russia become Russia only in 1721, it was renamed from Moskovien tsardom. Moscow is the center of this country and homeland of this nation, but it was formed and established as regional center of power at times of Golden horde. Moscow conquer former Rus principalities such as Novgorod, Pskov and so on. Their narrative that making them parts of Rus history, provides their ideology with reasons for expansions on the west, in BelaRUS and Ukraine. Ukraine's name has a warious theories of origin. Telling people that name for country was made from word that means border lands it's ridiculous, not to mention that the capital of oll east slavs was in Kiev. Olso there are many inaccurate moments if you traying to start Ukraine history from USSR, in 1918-21 there were numerous wars, conflicts and hostile actions between Ukraine and Russian communists. Important to know the facts about spreading of Ukrainian language on territories of former Russian empire, and if you try to find out this maps, you'll see that Ukrainian culture and language were spread far more beyond modern borders. After loose wars and genocide (1933 in east Ukraine), political and peasants exterminations of ukranians, and further immigration of russians, balance of different cultures shifts towards more numerous foreign language and culture, such as russian.
Todays world's wue on Ukraine-Russia conflict is oversimplified.
West don't want look deep in nuances of histori, not to mention that they don't understands reasons of Russian politics. Russia just has one ideafix, rebuild a USSR or Russian empire. It's provides them with the true meaning for their constant wars, explains their political actions. Their targets may look stupid, unlogical and mostly based on dogmatic faith of their rulers, but they will push towards them in any case. Russia know wery well that NATO never attacks, it's defensive alliance with slow politics and decisions made cycle. But, establishing Ukraine as member of NATO cuts them from possibilities for waging wars(not necessarily with weapons), and stops them from movement. Any stop, it's a stagnation and internal struggle, cause their people's believes in their narratives and ideology, which makes russian politics hostages of people that find only reasonable answers for embodiment their wet dreams by expansion.

In the 1930s Stalin was so kind as to starve perhaps several million Ukrainians to death and to ship another million off to labor camps. Prior to that, Lenin launched pogroms against the Ukrainian peasant land owners, the kulaks. A kulak was anyone with more than 8 hectares of land. This little bit of history still burns in Ukrainian hearts.
The Ukraine is a vast country with large cities and is getting better armed by the minute. Recent history is not forgotten and they will fight. It would take fully half of the Russian Army to invade and control it. More dead soldiers than they ever saw in Afghanistan. Billions of dollars in equipment losses Russia hasn't got the money to replace. The international cost would be a reinvigorated NATO and greater weakness relative to China.
Putin understands this. If there is an invasion it will only be the Russian-speaking provinces in the far east of the country and maybe to establish a land corridor to Crimea. He can brag about how he faced down a nonexistent threat from NATO and brought more ethnic Russians into greater Russia. If he's lucky maybe he can distract the population from the mess he has made with his previous invasion.
And he really can't move until after the Olympics anyhow for fear of offending the Chinese.

OK, VisualPolitik, it’s clear that you have used “Russian narratives” in historical matters for whatever reasons... But your explanation of “what really matters” ( 7:25 ) is funny, because distance from Latvian border (Terehova) to Moscow is ~90 km longer, than from Ukrainian border (Bachivs'k) to Moscow. In other words, 90 km are ~45 seconds for a modern short-range ballistic missile to fly. Anyway, perhaps; it is "really" the matter, then why Kremlin is against Georgia to join NATO? Again the “short” distance to Moscow? The real reason seems obvious for those who follow recent Russian history - NATO limits Kremlin’s ability to mess with its neighbors. Kremlin should not blame NATO for growing, because for East European countries it made perfect sense to join the alliance as soon as possible looking on what Russia did since collapse of USSR.

Well, the historical part of the video is highly inaccurate but the modern topics are much better explained, fortunately.
I understand that you wanted to explain Russian narrative and what they feel, but the video basically pushes Russian historical propaganda and states the narrative as facts which are highly arguable. By pushing the narrative without history of actual events, it gives Russian government more power and helps achieve their goals for free and basically can be viewed as helping Putin directly
Here's a few things got wrong:
    - The naming - "Ukraine" as a satellite territory was pushed by Russians for a while, but it's more related to the concept of own land (and the "kraine" part means exactly "country") rather than somebody else's
    - Ukraine was split between different countries (up to 5 at worst times) but it always had national identity even though sometimes deeply assimilated with others
    - Ukraine is direct ancestor of Kievan Rus' while Russia (Moskovia) originated from an eastern Rus' state and migrated north after Golden Ord wrecked Rus'. Moskovia developed in some kind of isolation on north and then started growing centering from Moscow .
    - Ukrainian identity was strong in 20th century and there was about 5 Ukrainian armies in 1917-1919 which all had their own vision on how Ukraine should develop (there were independents, monarchists, bolshevic Ukrainian armies). West of Ukraine always had strongest identity
    - Crimea was part of Russian Republic indeed in USSR but Ukraine had a huge fertile landmass Kuban (contains Stavropol, Rostov, Krasnodar, Volgograd, Astrahan' states and famous Sochi city). It had population of 62% Ukrainians in 1926 census. In 1956, USSR exchanged Crimea and Kuban between Ukrainian and Russian states. Little known but important fact
    - Cossacks are a strong Ukrainian militaristic entity with high value of Ukrainian identity (video had very obscure explanation of them). But after 300-400 years they become mercenaries and had little to do with what Ukraine was. Later own, Russia created their own cossack divisions that only had a name and training relation to actual cossacks (became misnomer)

The most baffling of this whole situation is how vassal the entirety of the EU is to the US.
Apart from Macron's meeting with Putin last week, there has been a general lack of leadership coming from other EU major states (Germany, Spain, Italy), and also how nonchalant the EU appears to be considering that a brewing conflict is about to happen close to their borders.

Not to mention Russia is about as enthusiastic to have US military as their border as much as USA was enthusiastic about Russians in Cuba. USA are still punishing Cuba for hosting Russians 60 years ago.
As for the gas - Russia wants to use the North Stream pipeline they paid for, so they are pumping as little through Ukraine and Poland as they can. If Germany just started using the damned thing the whole situation would calm down significantly. In any case, why would the Russians sell gas cheaply, when they can sell expensive, it's their gas and it's their decision what to do with it.
I like paying expensive gas and electricity as little as everyone else, but Germany is more to blame here, they closed their nuclear power plants without having domestic power production. They use more coal than they would otherwise do, and yet they throw tantrums because others prefer nuclear to coal. In your story, the thesis was that this is not a war over economic issues. And you are 100% right. This is an existential confrontation.
Russia cannot accept the very fact of our existence. If Ukraine becomes a member of NATO, the European Union and a successful state in general, it will mean the collapse of their entire ideology.
In fact, Russian statehood is trying to build its roots from Kievan Rus. And the problem for them is that Kyiv, by their logic, is their historical center, lies outside Russia.
    But just a few facts:
    1. Kievan Rus expanded and founded some modern Russian cities (such as Moscow)
    2. Just compare the map of Kievan Rus and modern Russia. There's probably a 5% match. Or even less.
    3. Once the Roman Empire now owned the territory of Britain. Just imagine if, on the basis of such considerations, Great Britain declares that it is the successor to the Roman Empire? This is Madness!
    5. The word Ukraine was first mentioned in 1187 and is mentioned in the context: Kyiv Ukraine, Volodymyr Ukraine ... that is, not as a suburb, but as a land / state / principality.
After all, what could Kyiv be on the outskirts of in 1187? It's funny. At that time it was one of the largest and richest cities in Europe. And Moscow was occupied by Prince Dolgorukov of Kiev in 1147.
    6. You will cite the example of the map of the USSR in 1921. And you look at the map of the Ukrainian People's Republic in 1920 - which was formed after the collapse of the Russian Empire. Its area is 20% larger than the area of modern Ukraine and there are lands of modern Russia.
    7. Many Ukrainians today speak Russian. It is not surprising. Over the past three hundred years, historians cite examples of more than a hundred decrees of the Russian Empire and the USSR banning the Ukrainian language. But in the Armed Forces of Ukraine up to 20-25% are Russian-speaking people who know what to do with the enemy.
    8. Putin constantly frightens the Russians that if Ukraine joins NATO, the time of missile approach to Moscow will be reduced from 15 to 7 minutes. But there is one question: what is the difference for the average Russian, even if hypothetically this time is reduced. No one will have time to hide in the bomb shelter in 15 or 30 minutes. It's just insanity.
But BASIC. Any historical issues or injuries should not and cannot lead to an attack on someone in the 21st century. In absolutely all European countries, neighboring countries have a very complex and ambiguous history of relations.
If you open this Pandora's box and start redistributing borders, then World War III will definitely happen.

As an Indian, I can correct you on a few key concepts, before the British, India was a major 3 empire system, and which had a few Rajputana kingdom’s in Rajasthan area. So yeah it was still india Because the Maratha Empire was the real power behind the fallen Muhgal empire. So only two large empires, while the Maratha empire covered most of India and the Sikh empire what is today Pakistan, Balochstasn, Kashmir, and Punjab.

4:11 Why country what have own language choose country name as edge or periphery in another language? Maybe they choose something like "In the country" on native one, which in Ukrainian looks like "У країні" isn't this looks to different to "Україна" , what is official country name... 🤦‍♂
4:43 At least you admit what this is russian narrative, bc somehow all languages from those countries is much closer between themselves, then to russian 🤷‍♂
5:25 Ukrainian nation doesn't exist, but some how they call themselves Ukrainians, and call their land after proclaiming independence (from Russian Empire), and call it Ukrainian People's Republic 🙃

Perhaps it's time we burst this bubble and give the Russians a very public bloody nose... If we're going to start talking about "historical claims", NATO should start demanding the reunification of Kaliningrad with Germany... given it's the birthplace of Emanual Kant and all... has absolutely no connection to Russia, etc etc etc...
We can play these games too :)

difference between "looking dangerous" and "being dangerous".Russia describes military doctrine as defensive military doctrine. With regard to nuclear weapons specifically, Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons: in response to the use of nuclear and other types of weapons of mass destruction against it or its allies,in case of aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons when the very existence of the state is threatened.
      oops
      google russia deadhand
The 'Perimeter' system, dubbed in the United States and Europe the 'Dead Hand', is an automatic control system for a retaliation nuclear strike. To put it simply, if Russia's territory is devastated after a nuclear attack, the Perimeter system automatically strikes the enemy's territory with its own nuclear missiles.

Shame is that after the Soviet collapse Russia actually offered Kaliningrad to Germany. Although I think it should have gone to Poland - if to anyone, given its shared border and that unlike Lithuania, its annexation wouldn't have turned Poland's population a 1/4 ethnic Russian overnight.

Extra LOL at "ocarina". Ocarina is a musical instrument, mate. You mean't to say ocraina. ocRAina, not ocARina.
Sorry guys, but you need to consult a historian first and then re-do this episode. And don't repeat putin's nonsense if you are really not pro-putin.
When you say you're not spreading historical inaccuracies because you're just repeating the russian narrative - I fail to understand how the former is somehow preventing the latter.
Russian narrative IS A LIE. It's NOT TRUE.
Why are you repeating these lies I have no idea. You would probably thing that this is what russians/putin actually do think about Ukraine, and that's why they say it. But that would be WRONG. There is a huge difference between what they want and what they think - and what they actually say. Because - get this -THEY LIE. And you repeating their words is just A REPETITION OF LIES. Sorry, but that's all it is.
Not sure why you'd need to do this - there is already an RT channel for that. Or is it because RT got banned? LOL

This may be Putin's version of the Cuban Missile Crisis. It seems unlikely that Russia is worried about a non-nuclear attack by NATO forces. But NATO can field nuclear weapons and that represents a very close threat should conditions deteriorate to that point. Ukraine maybe a pawn in this game. Russia conquering Ukraine may keep NATO more distant but at a very high cost. A possible US/NATO strategy might actually favor a Russia mired in a hostile occupation. The question is not whether we can negotiate but what perceived advantages a war might offer either side.

    • @somedude2734
      @somedude2734 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It’s the opposite. They are afraid of non-nuclear attack. In case of nuclear retaliation to conventional warfare would unite most of the world against them. It would be the end of Russia. Russia knows it’s too weak for conventional warfare and playing a scum nuke card.
