I love the Wachowskis so much. They're talented as hell. I am insanely excited for their upcoming collaboration with J. Michael Straczynski, another of my favourite storytellers.
I find Lana's thoughts on the intention of the Matrix interesting. One can easily assume that the Matrix is supposed to be something like a real phenomenon but you really have to observe it deeply to understand. I get anxious thinking about it but then I always remember that it's a movie and meant to mean something different. It's like reading the Allegory of the Cave and thinking man, I'm stuck in a cave. Back during that time period, people probably experienced anxiety reading it just like one would thinking about the matrix. Their anxiety driven rational thinking puts them in a fantasy and not really understanding what the story is meant to portray.
Elma Kim Eldridge she is truly amazing. What makes her even more impressive is the fact that she began doing press specifically as a way of giving a face to Trans rights (as she admits in this interview). And to be so engaging and joyful and at ease with not just your own very-public Queer identity on display, but also the weight of the entire Queer world on your shoulders*... It’s a massive task and she makes it look effortless. *Not that Lana can speak for all Queer people, or that she has any right to appoint herself as spokesperson... but realistically, this side of Caitlyn Jenner, Lana is the most high profile Trans person in American culture and the mainstream will consider her the de facto spokesperson no matter what. So embracing that responsibility is admirable.
What I love most about Lana and her outlook on life and the world; you could offer her an Oprah-scale audience and talkshow, and it'd be the last she'd want.
The Wachowskis are just so unbelievably intelligent, it's absolutely a gify and an honor to have experienced their artistic minds. I'm also so glad I went through psychedelics, now I understand matrix and wachowskis so much more.
Thank you for posting this amazing opportunity to share in a dialogue with three contemporary directors who have contributed incalculably to our modern understanding of what film is and can be.
Lana Wachowski looks almost exactly like Lola from "Run Lola Run", which was directed by Tom Tykwer in 1998. Even the names Lola and Lana are somewhat similar.
OMG! 17:34 lana's answer is amazing. perfectly explains the philosophy behind the matrix trilogy and cloud atlas. i want to see more philosophical movies like those and perfume.
Cloud atlas was in incredible journey. It allowed me to accept the actual feelings I experienced while watching. I may have a generous amount of openness when it comes to enjoying a movie. This movie relaxed me to a point where I was able appreciate every single line, visual, and soundscape. It needs a second theatric release.
bless you all for being such open spirits, especially lana. you are a shinning light. :) thank you for creating movies to help us awaken to the authetnic soul self we all are
I really cannot put in words the kind of love i have for their WORK or should i say PASSION e.g PERFUME,MATRIX TRIOLOGY ,SPEED RACER and now CLOUD ATLAS.Watched the movie but was bit late, so missed the first 10 minutes of the film, but still the movie was more Great! Will watch it again anyways. Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, & Andy Wachowski !Love you guys! Love From India!
Brett Shearer she really is so amazing and charismatic. It’s hard to imagine her as the shy, interview-averse person that we were introduced to in the late 90s.
This channel is filled with great and interesting conversations. After more than a decade of not seeing the Watchowskis interviewed or hearing them talk about one of their movies (except for a few minutes in a Matrix featurette), it's so great hearing their process of making Cloud Atlas. I'm very intrigued to hear the soundtrack now.
David Poland, sir, you are doing a great service to cinema and humanity by digging into these rich wells of artistic wisdom and providing us with a platform to hear and listen to them. You may not know how many souls you have touched through this but on their behalf I express my heartfelt gratitude.
This interview actually helps explain why they didnt want to do interviews. Theyve said before they want their movies to speak for themselves and that was particularly important for the matrix tril
I always looked at *Laurence "Larry" Wachowski* as an introspective, reserved, soothing, and very easygoing, tolerant guy with a dry, Midwestern sense of humor. It really disturbs me when someone equates such energies to depression, or god forbid *Clear-Cut Gender Dysphoria!*
It is so weird to see them talk about The Matrix. I went years never really hearing what they have to say about it and to have the directors actually speak on it is refreshing and exciting
i dont mean to be so off topic but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot my login password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
@Allen Ray thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out now. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
These three, Tykwer and the Wachowskis, should do more interviews like this. It obvious that they're highly intelligent, appreciative of all types of movies, and deeply spiritual. CLOUD ATLAS is one of the best pictures I have ever seen. 'The music should come first in movie making' is a really great observation.
I know that the people who are trying to find understanding of matrix any way will come here. So please, help me, I'm trying to find out what is the third film about. I know its about the faith, but I cant understand the meaning of it. I cant understand the meaning of the end dialog: "-Why are you persist? - Because I choosed to". And then somewhy Neo surrends. So why he surrends if he choosed to persist? And how this is solves the paradox of fate and choice? And what does mean the baby machine face? And also what the meaning of circle exploding in the film I see it quite often. And I know the Wachowskis really wanted to make exactly circle explodings. I will be very thankful for any answer on those questions. I search a lot but I didnt find anyone who really answers those questions without conflicting with author's main idea.
Wow! Hearing the Wachowskis talk about the Matrix trilogy! Just blew my mind! And to think ,this video doesn't even have "Matrix" in the description...! I almost didn't watch this because I thought it was a repost of one I'd already watched!
Wish the audio was better and that Tom wasn't so anxious to leave, but loved how in depth and talkative Lana was for someone who's shy toward the media.
I love when people in the comments section try really hard to be overly nice and complementary towards a trans person because they think it makes them this amazing good person to say these things, instead of just not focusing on it and treating trans people the same way they would anyone else. Its calculated and self serving.
you can make that argument for everything that's good about humanity "oh you help poor people? your just doing it to look good" people do good things to feel good, so what it's that fuzzy feeling in the stomach that keeps us toguether and if you get to make other people feel happier because of it that's enough for me
Got nothing against her transgender issue but she is a really ugly woman (No way you can dispute that). I know she hasn't had a lot of practice but ya really need to work on the voice too. BTW i'm ulgy also but I was born that way. Another BTW the Matrix was Awesome! Regardless of how you identify yourself. Just work on the voice.

I love Lana. She is very inspirational. As a transwoman, currently with a beard and acting hyper-masculine due to family issues with my identity, I hope that someday I too can find the peace and understanding to be who I truly am. Until then, I shall live a lie. I'm not very happy, but it makes my family happy.
12 is the year. The number is the number of the interview in that year. So this is the 136th DP/30 interview of 2012. I am DP aka David Poland. And our site is Movie City News.
Is there possibly a transcript for this amazing interview I am trying to use quotes and Ideas from a lot of what is after 19:00 for an essay comparing their directing style to Augusto Boal
Godfather and Daniel Day Lewis, Last of the Mohican's are both fantastic cinema. I haven't seen the other movies you mentioned. I was going to criticize your choices but I fully agree with you. The Godfather is a masterpiece. Such truly great source material.
Speaking of which: Prior to this interview, it really didn't occur to me how similar Lola & The Matrix really are. Aside from the fact that they came out at the same time: Both are basically effects-laden, hyper-kinetic "action" movies that were pretty definitive for their generation; while also, absolutely, conveying a deeper point about human existence. Those movies weren't exactly "deep", mind you - and that's a compliment. "Mono-Brow" - to quote the interview - is a wonderful description

That's another question. We're maybe 10 years from growing a female reproductive tract. So if Lana ever get's that surgery, now is she a woman? When she has periods? When she get's pregnant? See, there's this strange line, and I'm curious where you draw it and why. There are people that don't belief gender even exists outside social context, science indicates otherwise, but that's what they believe. They believe sex is in chromosomes and reproductive organs and can't be changed. But when it can?
It's an old expression that refers to the region of Siberia. Does make me want to watch it again - whether it's rubbish or not - the fact that they did a commentary track on the sequels of critics who hated the films shows a rare openness by the creators that deserves a second opinion...
Lol the critics completely missed the point and were completely ignorant of the philosophical text. Stuck on the surface. Were they aware of all the blatant Hindu symbolism of the 3rd? Literal excerpts from the Upanishads in the climax? No. They just saw VFX only. It's pretty funny actually when you juxtapose the two commentaries betwen the critics and philosophers... It becomes obvious which ones actually truly saw the films. It's all one story. When you watch them as one 6 hour plus film it's truly unique in the cinema canon. The Wachowskis were wrestling with traditions from both East and West, dialectical arguments on social systems, control, etc, etc, and settled on a non zero-sum transcendence/union of opposites (re Neo/Smith merging). This was panned as anti-climactic and not the profoundly Eastern, non-dualistic statement that it was and is. And very ballsy of the Wachowskis, mind you, not to mention way ahead of its time. I've yet to see any other movie or trilogy end in such a paradoxical manner. Are they perfect movies? No. The dialogue becomes like sophomore university lectures interspersed with CGI and less conventional cinema narrative. And yet, so what? As Lana said it was all an experiment, and perhaps too cerebral for their own good.
Keep up the good work. Can't say I've watched all 136 interviews, but I've watched a good many of them. So thank you. You got any favourites this year?
OMG the soundtrack break my heart, put it back together then made it soar. It is so beautiful, inspiring, sad and joyous. The only word that comes to me is transcendent. The fact it wasn't nominated for an Academy award tells me that Hollywood is a dung heap with its taste in a dark place.
A former German foreign minister (Joschka Fischer) even was a high school dropout yet he lectured at Princeton University on international relations a couple of years ago. But admittedly, that's not how it normally works.
The Academy's opinion has all but diminished in the last two decades, from the From the Academy's "Standards", to the restrictions set my the mainstream film industry and the MPAA, people are tired of it and are moving on to more obscure, more left field movie going experiences. I think this will be a magical decade in cinema, because audiences are starting to think for themselves in some respects and more filmmakers are flourishing in the independent arena without being plucked by Hollywood.
All of these dimensions are completely independent and though for most people they line up consistently (from our conversation you seem to be one of the lucky folks) not every one is so fortunate. It has nothing to do with want. I didn't want to grow up androgynous. That's just the body I have (I worked hard to change it, without success.) These people are intersexed. Between your male and female. Why is it so hard for you to get that they just want to fit in so they choose the best they can.
Bigger... Freedom is the ticket to enter. Human spirit, dignity, courage, contribution, brilliance, compassion, the unbridled beauty of being human emerging from the unexpected every day reality. Transcendence.
Actually during her HRC award speech, she mentions that she is "Painfully Shy". I think what you're seeing in her self consciousness and its only when she can get herself mentally engaged that she is less so.
I totally agree. They only care about movies like titanic, is total bullshit. This was a masterpiece and without doubt one of the best movies of the year. I mean, how the fuck is it not nominated for best makeup to say something? Wow...
such talented directors and story tellers. i wish more directors gave their films philosophical depth. an action movie, or rom com can be more than just empty titillation. ** SPOILERS ** that said, the makeup on cloud atlas was a bit overdone in some parts. and i didn't get how the reporter went from reading the letters to investigating a nuclear plant. was there a missing scene?
I love the Wachowskis so much. They're talented as hell. I am insanely excited for their upcoming collaboration with J. Michael Straczynski, another of my favourite storytellers.
Is it true they are on the Autism spectrum?
@@ChristianFrates1997 Everyone is these days, so it wouldn't surprise me.

This interview actually helps explain why they didnt want to do interviews. Theyve said before they want their movies to speak for themselves and that was particularly important for the matrix tril
Maybe because they stole a lot of there work or it was given to them from the powers in Hollywood and now they are paying for it all ¡!¿?
I'm fascinated by Lana. How she (he) went from a miserable and quiet nerd to a bubbly, smart, humorous and outspoken woman. Amazing transformation.

Actually during her HRC award speech, she mentions that she is "Painfully Shy". I think what you're seeing in her self consciousness and its only when she can get herself mentally engaged that she is less so.
Andy always looks at Lana with a 'what the fuck' gaze.
Wachowski quoting Saramago. You guys are Cosmos class! ;)
** SPOILERS **
that said, the makeup on cloud atlas was a bit overdone in some parts. and i didn't get how the reporter went from reading the letters to investigating a nuclear plant. was there a missing scene?
seriously? omfg makeup and editing, directing, for sure is deserved. where are all the nom's listed?
BABELSBERG
Was Lana Wachowski in The Fifth Element..?
Cloud Atlas looks so promising...
thank you that's brilliant
Did you see the same movie everyone else saw?
You can take the Wachowski away from the weird, but you can't take the weird out of the Wachowski.
