- Equality Illinois presents filmmaker Lana Wachowski with its Freedom Award at the Equality Illinois 2014 Gala in the Chicago Hilton on Feb. 8. A native of Chicago's Beverly neighborhood, Wachowski made her mark in the world of imagination, most famously by writing, directing and executive producing with her brother Andy Wachowski the "The Matrix" trilogy as well as films "Cloud Atlas", "Bound" and "Speed Racer".

How can you not love this human being. Brilliant, articulate, compassionate. Committed to being the very best expression of herself. Even more committed to a world that treats people with dignity, and life with respect. Lana, I love you. I love your work. I love the gift that you are for the world, and I hope above hope that some day soon, I'll get the honor and privilege to play with you on your field of endeavor. Until then, keep rocking the world.
I'm a straight man, but for quite some time it bothered me that I came across as somewhat effeminate to a lot of people. I can remember feeling concerned about what that meant for me in terms of being a "Man". This is why I'm grateful for people like Lana who come forward to discuss the broad spectrum of gender and sexuality and give me the chance to be more accepting of myself as a person.

And she makes such wonderful points, such an eloquent and well explained speech. It must have been difficult to go from being perceived as a heterosexual male to a homosexual woman and to suddenly realize in full force the restrictions that both transgendered people and women deal with on a constant basis.
But I am so glad to be a part of the LGBTQI community, it is definitely true that it is a forward thinking and open minded community. I'd absolutely be dead if it weren't for them.

I had no idea Lana also co-directed Bound! ... it makes so much more sense why i love it so much now... it wasn't about two women - the fact that it was a woman doing the handy work in the apartment next door was never an issue, or a topic in the movie... it wasn't about gender. ... awesome.

On the contrary, the exceptions proving the rule. Listen to Lana receiving the HRC visibility award. She and her Brother remained out of the public eye for over a decade. When the studios demanded they make public appearances promoting their movies. They said "Then we have to quit making movies." That's the kind of personal integrity the Wachowskis have. She only came out because she knew she was going to be outed by the press, and she was having it be on her terms. They always rock the boat!

this movie is art not some escapist fantasy. it's actually completely based on the experiences of the Wachowski sisters' lives living as trans people in a deeply phobic of anything not straight + white & highly patriarchal society.
