I really give the credit to the PS4. Before the PS4, I felt high budget JRPGs were declining. Then suddenly we have FF, Persona 5, KH, DQ11, Nier Automata and among others. Might not be the console with most JRPGs but surely one of the consoles that revive higher budget JRPGs.

@@michaelmacorso4479SNES and JRPGs like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger started my interest in the genre, but the PS1 and PS2 (and Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Saturn) cemented my interest and made me a fan.
That, and the great translations of Japan-only SNES JRPGs that I discovered via the Internet in the late nineties. Illusion of Gaia, Bahamut Lagoon, Star Ocean 1, Tales of Phantasia... In retrospect those were bad times for JRPG fans since so much hadn't made it to the west, but going to a site like The Whirlpool and finding out that another game had been successfully translated and released was fun. Those were maybe not a great time for fans of the genre, but they were a fun time...

Originally my favorite JRPG console was the PS Vita since I got into the genre due to the portability when I was in college since I had to a lot of free time to kill but was replaced later by the Switch. Any handheld that can play JRPGs is my favorite since I no longer have time to sit in front of a monitor or TV to play which I prefer handheld console and the reason why I got the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally.

Honestly, the more and more I use my steam deck (it’s finally getting some more love after finishing tears of the kingdom on switch) the more I realize that with Emudeck and the vast majority of games being on PC (or eventually making their way to it) that it’s probably the best modern “all in one” system. You should do a video of “if you HAD to pick ONE system” which would you pick? Pretty sure I’d say the steam deck or the switch. (Though, modded vitas and 3ds’ are pretty sweet too)

The PS1 may have made jrpgs more popular, but you are right, some of these games have not aged well. The genre was much more refined on the PS2, and many of those games can hold their own to this day. The PS3 is an underrated console for this genre, and some of the rpgs are still dirt cheap at the moment. $8 for valkyria chronicles, $5 for Ni no Kuni... a little more for some others.

By only owning a PS5 and a PS2 you can access the vast majority of RPG's due to backwards compatibility goodness, fortunately you can also access most PS3 RPG's through PS Plus subscription and they are also remastering most of them. My last Nintendo console was the N64 back in 1997 (phew!), but I'll also get a Nintendo Switch 2 if that one has backwards compatibility, that little but crucial feature just adds so much more flexibility and is greatly prefered, rather than having dozens consoles flying all over my Lowboard only to play a particular game lol.

That, and Paper Mario Color Splash and Xenoblade X, Color splash might be hindered down because of it's direction but it has gorgeous graphics and music, and Xenoblade X might feel more like an open world game than an rpg but in that I'd argue is even better than Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Eric is of course wrong. Best solution is to get:
    1. custom firmware PS3 - can emulate most PS2/PS1/other console games + own great Library
    2. custom firmware PS Vita for a Handheld + PS3 remote play
    3. PS4 or PS5 for newer titles, or a modded PS2 + Harddisk

@@dammyoyesanya4656 I count PS5 as standalone console for jrpg, no with PS4 compatibility (like i did with PS3 which had PS2 and PSX compability). PS5 have only one ekslusive JRPG - FF XVI - and this is main reason why i putted PS5 on 10th place. All jrpgs from PS5 i can play on PC or PS4, PS5 literally have no builded jrpgs for PS5 except FF XVI, and this game is only jrpg by name (westernization of series).

You can't have a top 10 JRPG list without Snes. Im sorry but the 3DS, DS and Vita is not even in the same ballpark as the SNES. I agree with top 4 though, but I would put SNES in 5th place as the lowest.
Chrono Trigger, FF4-6, Mario RPG, Lufia 2, Secret of Mana, Star Ocean, Breath of Fire, DQ5, Terranigma and Soul Blazer. To name a few. If we look at untranslated games which got fan translations i can name like 8 more. Like Live a Live or Trials of mana for example.

PS3 is mediocre for me since I am not a fan of the Trails or Atelier series. The great games I liked on the PS3 also came out on the 360 which had a few unique I liked way better.
I would rate SNES way higher by a lot, but that is due to where I really fell in love with the genre and can still go back and play them today. It would most likely not raise much, but SNES also had some games from the NES days.
I do believe talking about current systems is kind of moot, basically, games are either on multiple consoles or a console & computers.
