Just listened to this vlog today Jim. It's very refreshing to actually hear an American question what you all have been told since childhood about how great America is. And you are right, it is indoctrination, or propaganda!! I always marvel at how many Americans say how their country is the greatest country on the earth, blah blah. Well guess what, I can tell you, from here in Australia, that your country certainly is not. All the crap that goes on there...we shake our heads here and say, 'only in America '.

Yes, 40 to 50 years ago we had a neighborhood where everyone knew each other. Larger familys, mothers at home, schools, churches, little to no TVs/social media. Everyone played outside and interfaced with each other. This connected the local community together.

The old community (mall culture, community cohesiveness, etc.) petered out with the advent of the internet in the mid-90s. Today, everything can be done online...without having to do any real face-to-face interacting.

I've really enjoyed your talk and agree at a lot of points with you... - we've never been so close yet sooo divided, it's a such a shame.
I've never felt that I trully belonged(34 here) - always keeping to myself and minding my own business. And it's not just US, it's spreading like wild fire everywhere(say Japan got it even worse than US)
It's also a part of growing up(we never stop to) and seeing more of the true nature of the world around us, pulling the pink glasses and seeing the world as it is - it's painful
It's like the technology has replaced everything else, - everything is synthetic, tasteless... I get a lot of this feeling.
    We do not belong anymore.

Hey man I'm so glad you made this video discussing this topic . I'm 30 year old single guy and I find that the average person today is drama filled and immoral . Most people I come across with in public and at work are cold moody and full of relationship drama. Some are not even capable of having a clean genuine intelligent conversation anymore. I think society as a whole has lost morality and God and as a result your seeing isolated people. Thank u for talking about this topic bro. Just subscribed!

I recently turned 26 and I quit social media and encourage others to do the same, unless you a running a business for marketing and such. I've never felt so much mental clarity, peace and genuine connection when having conversation with people and deal with awkward moments by avoiding starting at my phone. Funny enough I work in tech and specifically with AI and Machine Learning, but even so, it's more important now than ever to find moments and also solutions to disconnect from the screens and enjoy the present moment.

I go to the gym just to feel some community. I can’t afford to isolate people at my age. I have to put boundaries because my mental health is through the roof. In my case, I don’t have anything serious to immediately shut off.

You don't need to hang out as long as you're cordial to one another. We don't have to be friends with neighbors. You become friends by sharing common interest not because you're neighbors. My husband occasionally offers small talk to neighbors. I offer some a wave and others I don't. People have changed and they don't have common courtesy like they once did and I am turned off by that. My grandmother had a garden and we grandkids were responsible for passing out the vegetables to the neighbors but they were good neighbors and looked out for one another.

Hey first off I'd like to say awesome video! I found myself agreeing with a lot of the sentiments you were sharing. As someone on the complete opposite end of the political spectrum but with many friends that support Trump, I'd just like to say that although I don't agree with you on many political topics, I still believe that you want what's best for everyone and I wish we had a system of governance where we had more control over what we support and what we don't.
Just like how you aren't a 100% Trumper I feel the exact same way about Kamala, if we had more than two options and our votes would still matter even in case of a loss, I think even as political opposites we'd change a lot of things that we agree on together and find a middle point to settle everything else. It's just that when the country is forced to pick between only two extremes we get very divided as a nation. On top of that all the things going on in the world just puts people on edge which is why your neighbors are overly wary. We need to be spreading more love and positivity and understanding to each other but like you've outlined we have no community to do that through.
Please continue to spread your message and take good care of yourself. It is definitely a tough time but as we learn to adapt and grow I'm sure the world will be a much better place in no time.

Its like walking on egg shells just interacting with others. Recently my landlord basically flipped out when I told her Im a Christian, she said that we are the worst! Interestingly, having freewill is an open question (unsolved) whether we actually have it or not, which means if we don't have it or have it very little, then everything we do is a result of the circumstances weve been through in life up to this point, and basically if animals were put in the same conditions, you would get the same results.

What is community? American culture has always focused on individualism from the hard working Haitian immigrant settling in Springfield, OH to the boomer homesteading free land on the frontier in the west. People whose ancesters have lived in the same place for centuries and who have roots in that community are the ultimate outsiders.

We get three or four groups we are bound to. 1) Immediate family (mom, dad, etc), 2) Extended and In-laws (cousins, marriage relations, etc) 3) community/culture (neighborhood, culture, ethnicity), 4) National/continental. If your primary dies off (1), then (2) kicks in, but has less structure. Neighbors move away, 'strangers' move in, values/norms change. (3) (4) Nation, country brings more immigrants that mix with original citizens/cultures, bringing new norms/customs original groups don't agree with. At this point, the remaining person is on their own and free to determine their own path in life, since there is no more familiar 'glue' that they recognize.

It's looking more and more like these issues are a growing pain for civilization as a whole. Some countries are just running into it sooner than others - and of course the US decided it needed to be the best at the "who has the most issues?" competition. No judgment on those that move to a place that has yet to be infested by all these problems, though. Everybody has their own situation. I think, as a species, we're in the middle of figuring out what we want the future to actually look like - because it's hard to build something if you don't first know what you're trying to put together.
Relationships aren't just an issue in the US. Most "western" countries have a similar story. Western Europe has similar issues as well as South Korea and Japan. I saw a young, South Korean woman conclude "we might as well just go extinct." We also see videos from China, a country we were fed a lot of propaganda regarding our differences (one reason why it is important to separate the view of a country's government from a view of its populace), about the difficulty of finding relationship partners. If nothing else, all the various "pill" movements show that many people are trying to figure out some type of answer to what they're being faced with.
The simplest summary is looking at fertility rates that freefall in pretty much every developed country around the world, with nobody really finding a solution to turn it around yet.
