- I recently unboxed this music machine, a Universal Max from LOTUS Trumpets and she is a BEAUTY! So happy to share this unboxing and demonstration video with you all. In this video I'll walk you through the various tuning slides and weighted valve tops that came with the horn, and demonstrate several examples on each combination.

I swear I'm not just saying this but I liked the bronze slide and heavy top caps too. Thick but secure sound with easy articulation. The brass slide with lighter caps zips though!!

Those are beautiful horns! And they seem to be growing in popularity with some top level players. As I was listening to your examples, I was trying to figure out which I thought sounded best (through my phone speakers :/), not knowing that you were going to share your favorite combination at the end. The differences seemed so subtle, but I went with bronze slide, heavy top caps, regular bottom caps. Ha!
Ha!!! Kindred spirits and like minds!! Yea I always laugh about putting this much effort into the production know most people will listen on phone or cpu speakers 🤣🤣
The production effort was well worth it, man. When I want to really hear something properly (your vid for example!), I grab my headphones or Bluetooth speaker. But unfortunately I’m seriously laid up right now with RSV and my speaker was out of charge and my headphones were in another room and I was too beat to get out of bed. 🤦♂️ Glad you’re digging that beautiful horn though. I’ve been watching plenty of Lotus and Böhme Tumultus vids and those are my two fantasy horns lately. That and the weird circular Monette cornet that Ron Miles played 😂
Maybe I'm in the weird minority, but I actually liked the brass slide, but with all the heavy stuff. A little brighter, but still a big sound with a bit of diffusion at the edges. Thanks for taking the time to show us all the combos!
It’s such a personal preference, makes sense that your favorite combination would be different. Glad you got something out of the video!

That’s an original exercise. Circle of fourths in groups of 5:

Then same thing on G cont the circle
G C F Bb Eb

I have and old recording of a Woody Shaw masterclass from the 80’s where he plays this pattern, demonstrating it very slowly at first and then at full WS tempo 🔥
@@BenjaminFrock yo that’s wild because I actually didn’t get it from him. But Woody is the king of fourths so I’m sure he’s played everything that’s possible to play with it haha.

They do! I just didn’t need one. It was masterfully packaged very safely
