    My shower door contractor gave us great advice just last week: there are two types of shower enclosure glass, clear and traditional green-blue (denoted by the color seen along a finished edge of a piece of glass). He said that cool neutral bathrooms look best with clear glass showers and warm natural color bathrooms look best with traditional green glass. I thought that was GREAT advice. And it reminded me that it's always good to ask your contractor what they think - they see it all, every finish & fixture from cheap to cutting edge - and trust me because of that they have MUCH better taste than we do! This applies to plumbers, painters, electricians. Just because they work in a trade does not mean they don't appreciate good design....they most *certainly* do appreciate beauty and they love to share their insights vis-a-vis good design.

      The contractors who did my bathroom decided that the light fixture should be above the sink and the vanity should be fitted into the wall and the wall board should be put right over the tile and brackets for the toilet paper holder and towel bars. I noticed light coming through the base of the shower from the basement because they had cut away a good bit of the floor the entire base supported below by a one inch wide aluminum strap. Cracked and had to be replaced. The electric heater is crooked. The mirror isn’t centered over the sink; the only outlet is behind a fixture I told them I was going to use for storage. They replaced the window with clear glass. I swear they must have been high. So many things to notice when held captive. And they weren’t the lowest bid. I know I know….I should have been more forceful. I didn’t want to make a fuss. To be fair the drywall (marine board) is flawless. Obviously their specialty. It’s better than it was. Forgive the rant. Having a Facebook fight with contractors who seem to think it’s okay to work high AND uninsured.

      @@marylhere the contractor still needed insurance for his labor though, by law every business by statute has to carry workman’s compensation insurance for example. Also I don’t understand what “vetted by Easter Seals and all bids required insurance ” means and why Easter Seals would be involved for a contractor you hired.

    My Reno guy made the best design suggestion- if possible don’t put the shower niche in the wall you look directly at when entering. All the shampoo/condition/ razors, etc ruin the look! We have the pony wall between the shower and tub and that’s where he inserted a niche with one very tall space for Costco size bottles and then a much narrower space for soaps and razors. Best suggestion ever

    To add more storage to our small bathroom, we installed a 6ft tall shelf in between the studs. It's about 4" deep - just wide enough to hold lots of bathroom products (ie. shampoo, mouthwash, prescriptions, etc.) We made a 18" wide barn door to cover it. It works really well and looks adorable.

      Yup, mine is a sea foam green with a teal green glass penny round tile as an accent set into white subway tile. My house is 105 years old so the subway tile is the kind of tile that would have been there originally. I also used a period correct penny round floor tile as well, but I replaced the pedestal sink with a larger vanity with Shaker style doors. I think my newer version is great.

    I used large format tile in my small bathroom tub/shower. One thing we ALL learned: your walls must be level lol. We had to fix quite a bit to support the weight to bring the tile up to the ceiling. Also used a ceiling to floor shower curtain to add height. White wainscoting with a dark floral wallpaper for visual interest. 45in tall vanity mirror to make it tall too. Looks great!!

Whenever painting the bathroom green came up I would try to have a bit of a discussion about it! Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. My teenie-tiny (5.5x6.5 foot) 1907 bathroom was remodeled last summer. It went from brown/beige, thick porcelain floor tiles in the shower and on the floor and backsplash to a white bathroom (white subway tile) with touches of gray marble and real wood white painted beadboard on the wall as a backsplash. It's a little jewel box that I love, love. It has a skylight as well, which really brings in light and character.

    Thanks for another great video - this one is full of useful ideas I will come back to.
    One tip I'd like to add is about lighting and to think carefully about symmetry.
    I have a double basin in my bathroom and each basin has its own wall light above it. The whole assembly looks nice and is symmetrical, BUT the centres of the lights are further apart than the centres of the basins - so if I use the left basin the right side of my face is in shadow and if I stand at the right basin the left of my face is in shadow.
    When I get to re-doing my bathroom that's going to get fixed.

    I love my tiny honeydew green bathroom, which is in the exact configuration as the dark bathroom with the striped shower curtain. Home circa 1945. With the window right in the center of the shower/tub and bright white tile 4X4. The one window faces east and it glows in the morning. When we make it ADA accessible, I plan for some light marble floors with a small border,. As a 60+ with arthritis, I'm toying with the idea of a step-in tub/shower or keeping it a apron tub and shower combo.

    #4 - a minor mistake that many (but not all) folks do: leaving the toilet seat up!
    It costs $0 to fix. Of course, it has to be important to family members.
    We replaced the builder-grade toilet SEATS with slow-close seats. No slamming seat lids anymore.
    After watching a few of those TH-cam videos of toilets being flushed with the seat closed vs. the seat open, well, that convinced several family members to put the seat down.

      _[I'll try to keep this short, otherwise I could go on like a crazy person about this topic.]_
      *_...cheering loudly from the sidelines...._*
      Oh....my....word..... *YES!*
      A toilet lid (or worse, the seat AND lid) left up / open is *_so bad_* on so many levels. I'll give you two:
      1) For the 36 people in North America who haven't heard yet, when you flush the toilet, bubbles are created and burst in the air, literally *covering everything in the vicinity with urine and fecal matter* if the lid's open;
      2) It looks like unholy heck! Seriously---a toilet lid left up looks like some greasy hillbillies live there who haven't bathed in months and who often just go on the floor because it's too much bother to get to the toilet. Just *UGH!*
      What utterly floors me is that people who leave toilets open would likely *never leave their kitchen cupboards open,* or their oven door, or their car doors when parked, or leave their trousers' fly open....or a hundred other odd, eyebrow-raising habits.
      Ugh---again. I still sound like a crazy person :(

    I HATE wall mounted toilets and vanities in a full bath. It's okay in powder room. But, in a full bath you need storage in your vanity. Plus you have to clean under the toilet and vanity can't use the floor space be because it a streamlined look and a trash can will look weird. Those very wide and short niches are not very useful and will need to be cleaned as crud will build up in there easily. A taller narrower niche that can hold shampoo bottles is more practical.

    A mistake I often see: wall lights above the mirror instead of on both sides of the mirror. Lights above means you shade your own face and it’s difficult to see the lower half of your face for details like make-up or shaving.

    • @be5952
      @be5952 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Totally agree.
      And, I'll add that to accomplish good light on the face, the old, out-of-style-twenty-years-ago 'Hollywood Mirror Lights' are still the best. (These are the ones that come in 'strips' with bare, usually frosted 'Snowball' style bulbs.)

    Having a toilet seat closed or open is very subjective. I see some people here bashing others for having the seat up and saying it's nasty. Even if you flush with the toilet seat down, put it back up after for me please. For me personally, I cringe when I see a toilet seat down for a few reasons: #1- I don't want to touch a toilet seat to open it, especially if it's not mine, yuck. #2- Sometimes people have toilet seats down because it have faeces in it, I don't wanna be shocked when I open it. #3- I once lived in a country with snakes and have heard many stories of snakes in the toilet, frogs also loved the toilet. So, opening a closed toilet seat was nerve wrecking to me and sometimes took plenty energy.
    So stop judging why people might have a toilet seat open. Honestly, sometimes when I see a closed toilet seat, I feel so terrified to open it, so I just walk away.

    Just finished my bathroom with black marble tile on floor and all the way up the walls. One greystone textured accent wall with black floating vanity with white top and vessel sink, 8'x7' walk-in shower fully enclosed with 12 fixtures and full-length niches with built-in lighting. 12 recessed lights in the ceiling and 3 wall mount sconces. Biobidet prodigy, heated floors, and towel warmer. Couldn't be happier with how modern and awesome it looks. Was afraid about all black all the way to the ceiling, but the accent wall, the vanity top, and the tons of lighting make it work perfectly. Plus the shower is an oasis - I can go in there, dim the lights and it feels like a secluded sanctuary.

    We have a high ceiling bathroom with a skylight - it’s a very light green as in the color of Clinique cosmetics with white added😀. No art, just a good oval deep tub, pedestal sink and same color as the wall shelf boxes. When you are in the room, you don’t see green and it is a relaxing natural space.

    Another great video! Although I will never give up my green. I love a soft green (think outside natural light sage green) that brings the outside in. I decorate with plants and it is such a great backdrop even in a bathroom. Maybe it is because I have rosacea and the green helps my skin in the mirror. 😆 I love the oversized mirrors you suggested though!

      I agree with you. My wife and I have painted nearly every room in our home a shade of green plus a sand / tan color in the living room. We love our “Avocado” shades throughout our home. With white trim and dark floors it really is starting to come together and looks nice. Maybe I missed the reason why “Never use green”. What is the reasoning behind this?

    I feel like you *can* have dark if you really want it, but it takes a bit more effort and thought. You can totally do an entire bathroom in slate, or something similar, but do the whole room in it. Dark colors only make a room look larger if you do the whole room in them. Something like an accent wall, or a darker shower stall is going to chop up the space. If you really want dark, you have to commit to it. You also have to be super careful about the lighting. (You may also want a separate space like a dressing room or vanity table if you're someone who likes makeup.)
    I feel like the only thing you really have to avoid color-wise are medium tones. You can do super dark, or light. Anything in between is going to look dingy and dirty.

      My brother has always dreamed if having a bright orange bathroom to wake up to every morning, and it turned out a bit darker than I had hoped, but a white bathroom set with a black tribal print blended it right out. The orange is almost a neutral now!

    • @Bunny-ch2ul
      @Bunny-ch2ul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Nonsequitoria2010 I feel like you have a lot more flexibility in terms of bathroom design when you're designing for guys. (Husband and I are both guys.) When you don't have to worry about decent lighting for makeup application and such, you can go pretty out of the box with the design.
      I also feel like color is best either super bold, or very traditional. Ugly happens when people want to split the difference.

    it's terribly presumptuous to say they're mistakes EVERYONE makes. I haven't, and it seems quite a few other commenters haven't either....that said, you make some good points and suggestions. I particularly love the bathroom with the large sink, hanging loo and plant inset in the shower. This is very similar to the design I used for my bathrooms, accept that I have a wall dedicated to floor to ceiling vented storage. Pokey showers are a pet peeve of mine so the generous shower in the displayed bathroom is a must. It's probably only 1200 x 1000 cms but that's ample for couples showering, or putting a chair in the shower for an older person or someone getting over an injury.

    What I don't like about niches in the shower is that they're put in like it's a frame for a piece of art, when what it's really used for is showcasing shampoo bottles.
