Paint chemist here! I'm impressed with the technical content presented. One thing that also has a huge impact on final appearance is the quality of tools. You can take an expensive paint and the job will look poor if you don't have quality brushes and rollers.

We bought paint samples and painted 2 coats on large foam poster board from the dollar store so we could move them around the room and see how the paint looks in different lighting, next to the flooring, cabinets, countertops and appliances. It really made a difference and I recommend.

This is by far the best interior design channel I’ve ever come across. The quality of the information is brilliant and consistent. Wish I had have come across his years ago it would have saved me a lot of time and money. One thing I would so love is if there was also metric measurements included. We used to use imperial but now metric which means every time there is an imperial reference I have top stop the video and convert which is a little inconvenient. Lisa Holt Design Very well presented. I'm over 40 years in the professional high-end residential painting business, 17 yr apprentice instructor & now own & operate a BM paint store. Your presentation is spot on. The way you focus on the light influence & other color influences in the room can not be over stated. Also, a nice quip is "cheap paint isn't good & good paint isn't cheap!" My fall-back line when working w/ customers who are challenging re colors is "now you know why painters drink!" Gets them everytime and allows me to retake the lead in the conversation to help them.

Great talk on paint. Always remember we bought a house years ago and the lady was really into Country, the whole house was painted Navajo white ( which can be kind of a light beige). I couldn't get light to reflect at night to comfortably read, I complained to my wife about it and she likes to paint, so a trip to home Depot and bought a big 5 gallon bucket of white paint, and she painted the whole inside of the house, her Mom helped her. After she had finished it was very noticeable that the previous owners painted the ceilings in Navajo white also, which was why I couldn't reflect light. This was almost 30 years ago, house had those dumb acustic ceilings, and my brother had a neighbor who was a painter he says if we wanted it white it would be simple to spray it, and he offered to do it then if we supplied the paint he wouldn't have to mask anything and sprayed it in about a hour and a half for $75 cash, what a deal, the ceilings stayed like that till 2013.

I picked my living room color from a vlog. After staring at samples on my walls for weeks. I said no to all of them. Then I was watching one of my vlogs. The home was big and beautiful and probably in the million dollar range. It was painted with City Loft from Sherman Williams. My house is small, a ranch style -not a million dollars.
I bought it, brought it home, really saw it for the first time in the living room,. I love it. My girlfriend used it in one of her houses.

I like you:D You come across as someone who enjoys your work and genuinely wants to help people.
You are so very right about not making decisions from little paint samples. I learned that the hard way. When picking paint colors later, I had a spreadsheet with my notes about the appearance of various paints at various times of day, as well as how they looked next to applicable fixed elements, so I think your rule of 3 is definitely good advice. Some may think it's excessive, but if done, there is greater confidence the selected colors are the right ones, and as you said, mistakes are expensive!
Rather than painting walls, though, I painted three to four 24"x24" thin, smooth boards, without wood grain (from Home Depot). The main colors would be on one side of the boards, and the accent colors would be on the back sides of the boards, all with one inch of true white painted borders. What I liked about the boards:
    - They could be moved around the room and/or the entire home
    - The extra large sample size was really helpful visually, especially allowing me to step farther back to see
    - The white borders made it easier to see the impact of the paint and its undertone without being influenced by existing wall colors
    - They could be reused/repainted and could handle two coats of paint without any curling or rippling as paper sometimes can
    - They could be held right next to flooring, cabinets, countertops, furniture, etc.
    - They could be taken to stores to check against something that wasn't in the home yet and could even be used to help select accessories
One big tip is to hold the paint boards vertically, since that's the way paint is seen on walls. Don't lay paint boards down flat on floors or counters, for example.
Small samples of paints and these boards cost several dollars each, but it's well worth it to avoid a costly mistake. If I had known about the option to have the paint store do a brush out or draw down, I might have gone that direction. Thanks for posting your video!

After being chemically injured in our new home from breathing in so many chemicals from paint, new carpet, etc., my whole life changed. And so did my family’s. So, I’d begin with a paint that will not off gas chemical fumes. In short, We did our current house in ECOS paints which are probably the least toxic on the market. Natura is another brand that is much safer than most conventional paints. I believe you can buy at Benjamin Moore. My painter tries telling his clients they need to buy safe(r) paints and they balk at price. How can you put a price on your health? They do not understand potential negative health effects of using toxic paint. Paint can off gas from months to years. Poor Indoor air quality is a major issue these days according to EPA. I have read nightmare stories of people using toxic paint and getting sick or not being able to go into the room. Don’t risk it, friends. This comes from a chronically ill, chemically injured person.... 11 years now. Everything you bring into your home can either make or break your health. And wallpapers, don’t get me started how toxic this project is ;-) Happy painting everyone, but safety first. Your indoor air quality matters to your family’s health. Trust me.

10 years ago we mostly used relatively safe paints when renovating, but a high gloss one for kitchen cabinets and some furniture. Never again... I'm asthmatic, so I knew to beware, but not well enough (my asthma got worse). These days I'm super careful with paints.
Currently I'm fixing some old benches that need to be re-painted. Unfortunately chalk paint doesn't seem to work for furniture, but there's a semi gloss ordinary furniture paint that has the Nordic eco label, which means it must be free of certain toxic chemicals, because that's the label requirements. Also I'm working outside on my parents' yard.

curvyquill hi there....you might look at the safety data sheet on that product for more info. Be careful. I was also re-injured (nerve damage) from neighbors vented fabric softeners and dryer sheet scented chemicals that entered our unit thru faulty windows. Those products are super toxic unbeknownst to many people who are unsuspecting... so be careful....my friend... :-)

I developed asthma after moving into the home we'd had built. New everything, of course... Had to sell after that first year. Another mistake... we were one of the first homes in our development. As other homes were being built we were inundated with all the building dirt, sawdust, and debris blowing in the air. Never again.

I had a long, dark closet with no electric light, so I painted it with white high-gloss paint. It was amazing what a difference that paint made in being able to see things in that closet. Another time, my church was doing a renovation and needed to put a dark, narrow staircase into use. My husband and I painted it with high-gloss white paint, and the staircase was absolutely transformed into a bright and welcoming entry. It had a landing, and we painted it a dark color so people would know they'd come to it.

Learn from my experience.... I’m 70 year old woman with degree in fine art, so I very much appreciate her great knowledge. Yes Ben Moore! I used Ben Moore on three houses and five vacation rental condos I owned.
My absolute favorite base wall color is OC11! “Clay beige”. FABULOUS!!!!! I paint baseboards also with same clay beige (easy!) and final coat is clay beige...... in Ben Moore’s ADVANCE!!! (It is a super strong cabinet coat paint) Goes on smoothly!
For trim and doors, I mixed my own light warm grey in Ben Moore Regal Select Exterior! The best paint I have ever used!!!! It is Ben Moore top of the line.
GREAT tip for crown... (I am currently caulking and painting crown on high ceilings). I don’t want to have to move the ladder and go up and down ...in order to put three coats on crown! I discovered BEN MOORE REGAL SELECT EXTERIOR LOW LUSTER!!! (yes, exterior) I can actually get by with one coat on crown! It dries quickly so it is easy to put two coats on while keeping your ladder in the same place. I personally don’t like shiny crown molding and find that low luster is lovely on crown!
Biggest problem I’ve had in past was painters doing caulking! I do it myself now. No matter what they tell you, how good they think they are.. they all use the same technique which leaves caulk “outside” the groove. It takes TIME and finesse but you need to use a small piece of damp yellow sponge and wipe off all the excess caulk. Caulk ONLY goes in the space. Not outside. A lot of guys “smooth” it with their finger then paint over it. No. No. no! Damp sponge rid all excess caulk. On baseboards, I usually do two rounds of caulk (good caulk) then also DryDex spackling on top. (Pink turns white) I also use this spackling to smooth out gashes on door casings. You don’t want the top of your baseboard to be indented and catch dirt so the spackling can even it out. I’ve never found a caulk that does not shrink. And spackling is easy to “scrape” or “wet sponge” when dry. You will LOVE BEN MOORE ADVANCE for baseboards. But again... OVER the flat wall paint. (If you only use Advance over white baseboards, you’ll need 4-5 coats!)
Took me awhile to figure this all out! Also my door casings, even the new ones are not perfect, so I use the Regal Select low luster which hides imperfections.
I prefer having my wall color neutral and then using color in pillows, throws, paintings, etc.
Please look at OC11 CLAY BEIGE at Ben Moore! you must try it on a wall to see how lovely it is. Looks great with lights and darks around it!

Great series. I’m a graphic designer, illustrator. I’ve also created murals and wall faux finishes for clients. I too, have been a long time fan of Ben Moore, until they reformulated their paints. Even with additives like Flotrol, in general the paint doesn’t flow as it once had. Especially when painting trim. I’ve found that I must dip my brush into water and then the paint, in order to have a smooth brush free finish. One other problem, I recently run into, once a pant can is resealed, if their is any residue paint on the can lip, that can will rust on the edge and at the bottom (even stored indoors in a dry location) and I’ve had to strain and repackage the remaining paint into plastic containers. I’ve learned work around for these issues, but it’s a real hassle.

Really liked this. And as to Benjamin Moore, I used one of their colors over 30 years ago, loved it and was in my house for 13 years. I moved from that house and eventually repainted the new house. I used that Benjamin Moore paint again and it's now been in my house for almost 20 years. All excellent and love your energy. One thing I would add is, if you have the luxury of long term, wait through the seasons. I remodeled my daughter's room top to bottom. It took 2 months, every night after work, while she slept on the couch. Halfway through the project, the beautiful sage green she had chosen started looking like split pea soup...just awful. After several days I realized the light coming through her dormer had changed as we moved from winter to spring and the big tree outside had leafed out adding another layer. I repainted in the same color family, but went several shades lighter and ended up where it had started in appearance. I have NOT made that mistake again LOL

I’ve had so many cheap paint disasters, including one where each roller stripe has to completely dry before next, it pulled off the wet paint in the previous stripe. For the last 35 years, it’s been Benjamin Moore every time. Quality is so important, especially when doing white trim, cheaper paints needs so many coats (even on properly primed surfaces), that they end up costing more, anyway. Even their cheapest formula is superior to other paints, and I usually get the middle grade, which covers in one coat. They also still have oil-based enamel, which is all I use on trim and moldings, latex paint doesn’t level well so gives a streaky, not smooth finish, and doesn’t dry hard, it stays soft and sticky, terrible for windows and doors.

I think something that’s important to mention is paint companies may have the same “name” paint say Utterly Beige with the same recipe on the can BUT if you go to repair nail or screw holes or a gash and don’t have original paint left, it’s not going to look the same. If your paint job is more than even a year old unless you have a professional do it (or your incredibly talented) there will be sheen marks. Unavoidable. Selling a home and making promises of perfect patch jobs on a four or five year old paint or expecting it yourself you can’t. Dye manufacturers change their formulations so it goes without saying paint companies can’t promise the same colour. They will not match. The bigger the windows or the brighter the bulbs perfection is not achievable. I love your channel

One warning about Behr, if you don’t sand the wall first, the paint will peel off if nicked or scratched! It’s not like other paints where you can just roll it on over another paint. And it doesn’t matter if it had a primer in it!

Hmm--I've used Behr in a few of my rooms (I like the Marquee because for the most part it does cover in one coat--just a few spots I've had to do a second coat) and I've never had that problem.

@@hannahm7373 I am with you. We repainted the entire house using Behr paint a few years ago and did not have any problem with it. They still look so good that I am having a hard time convincing hubby to repaint.

Benjamin Moore never lets me down. I learned the hard way years ago, with a gallon of cheap paint, it was drippy and took four coats. What a pile of work. Never again! Benjamin Moore is a pleasure to work with. This video gave me lots to think about. Thank you for sharing Lisa.

Oh my giddy aunt. How has it taken so long for me to find you??????? simply adore your passion and talent and the fact that most of us don’t have mega bucks to spend on design but soooo want a home out of the ordinary. As a viewer from Australia where many of our rooms and homes are much smaller than the USA, I love seeing all the alternatives you offer; most of us don’t live in 50sq homes 🏡. Would love to see something on paint, decor etc for sensational bedrooms Thanks Lisa

Hey Rebecca, well there is always spraying a paint, but you really need to know what you’re doing on that one. My suggestion is to get the best rollers and brushes you can afford, you’ll use them for a lifetime👍🏻🥰

I also paint the swatch on every wall in the room -- north, south, east, west -- because how the natural light hits it will change the perceived color of the paint. This is especially important with exterior paint. One color looked too intensely blue (FAR more intense than the swatch!), one color looked too dully gray (ditto the swatch), and the third color was like Baby Bear's porridge -- just right! Luckily, it was the one I was leaning toward on the swatch, but I was advised to get one "bluer" and one "grayer" and try them all out.

Love the paint suggestions!!!! Painted our house for sale (which we ended up canceling in the end - good thing) but now, I have a house with colors that all need refinishing....its just daunting to decide where to springboard from, as I find myself wanting to just redo everything new and fresh instead of the same ole thing....where to start to bring a cohesiveness to the house? now I know why folks hire interior decorators!!

OOOOOOMMMMMGGGGGG!! These tips are BLOWING MY MIND!!! Sheesh lady! I was thinking of taking some interior decorating courses at a community college (just for me to know more). Instead, I can save my money, watch your videos , and invest those funds in brush outs, LED video light, and hiring a talented designer like you! You are SO knowledgeable, SO energic and SO helpful. I feel more empowered to work with a designer to create the home of my dreams. Ma'am, you ROCK!
