About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
That henning pauly remark made me spit my soda out. High octane banter xD
6:10 Well, that guy broke all of Glen's bass player stereotypes quite handily...
Shame the bass was so buried in the mix, though :/ Even during the solo bit, i struggled to hear it; probably couldn't have, without seeing the fretting hand.
Anthony Crowford is a beast! One of the best bass players around!
It helps that Anthony Crawford is from a bit of a different background, check out his earlier stuff with Virgil Donati. More recently I've seen him live with Gary Willis at the Bass Bash this year, which was absolutely phenomenal
Matt Reav Glenn and I were actually there! And yes, Anthony was amazing!
@@E1p0tat0k1ng Something like this?

The synt mode made it as good as any John Lord wannabe l've heard over the years.
If you want to cover Deep Purple songs and you don't have an organ - here you go.
I totally thought of Deep Purple as well!
perfect strangers- not bad!
this is what I came here to say. Thank you for making me see I'm not alone
Now, can Glenn play "Child In Time"?
Who else thinks Huawei should start making guitar multi effects pedals
@john m They can spy on your midi preset using their 5G.
@john m Hilarius LOL
@@JiosX man best of the day
Naah, I think Eventide should release a new version of the H9000 processor that has guitar and bass amp modelling, guitar and bass cab emulation, and tone capture option along with the plethora of the effects that the normal H9000 already has. I'm damn sure such a modeller will blow away every other modeller into weeds.
so they can steal yr information when you play your guitar?
"oooh but this one's made in China!"
"Well so is the helix"
gold 😂😂
lol yeah....along with fucking everything else
Completely ignores the point that the software is developed by a Chinese company known for stealing IP, his points are always lowest common denominator stuff
@@marw9541 So what if it's developed by a Chinese company? What exactly is your point?
@@JSBroadcast Sorry, I wasn't very clear on what I meant. Mooer is a Chinese company that has had litigation brought against it for copyright infringement. Glenn ignores that this is what everyone is talking about, not that it is just "from China." What I meant to say was "A Chinese company known for stealing IP". I've corrected myself now.
i dont mean to be off topic but does someone know a way to log back into an Instagram account??
I somehow lost my account password. I would love any help you can offer me!
7:10 nice slayer solo
I think the main problem that the GE300 has in the UK is that it's only £85 cheaper than the Helix LT, which has a lot more useful stuff (more DSP capacity, multiple parallel signal chains, snapshots, more I/O, more output options etc). If it was proportionally cheaper, like in the US, it'd be about £475 (it's currently £665) and at that point I'd almost certainly get one to use as a backup.
My point exactly!
It's cheaper in India than in the US. It's even cheaper in China but that's implied.
The only features on this unit that the Helix doesn't have are the Kemper-like Tone Capture and more Robust Synth engine offerings. Line 6 could easily remedy this by adding more complicated Synth effects and create their own Tone Copy feature, which is stuff we've been asking for.
@@TacticalBurritoSystem - agreed. To be honest, I'm not really interested in either of those things. Synthy stuff ain't my bag, and I don't care about copying anybody else's tones; I prefer to build my own.
The only things that are lacking in the Helix for my usage are decent pitch effects, and something like a Freqout to give more controllable feedback just so I can avoid searching for the sweet spot in the middle of a song, given that we're on the toilet circuit and 10 minute changeovers don't lend themselves to marking the right spots
on stage with gig tape.
Yeah seems most people don't really care with the tone capture. If they scrap it, it will be cheaper.
He was my guitar student for about five years when he was going through high school. Then we sent him off to GIT good to see him here.
Dude the tone when you start playing at 4:12 is pretty bad ass! And Cam on the drums...always a solid choice!
Finally! I watched Anderton's use this but they never do the heavier metal tones so I always wondered how it sounded for it. Sounds really good!
With everyone so obsessed with the helix over the past year at least, it's great to see someone actually showcase an alternative instead. Even pointing out a few flaws which I don't see many people doing in other reviews in general, not just the helix. Thank you for making the video.
Just out of interest, how well does it work with a bass plugged in instead? I may be in the market for some new gear soon but, more importantly, I felt like letting the world know my disability. Regards!
Really liked Jake's playing on the most recent Iced Earth album. Awesome track in this video.
Kemper profile vs GE300 tone capture blind test please.
I have their Brown Sound preamp pedal, and I adore it, as well as their speaker simulating mini DI, and I no longer need to haul heavy amps and cabs.
Another great review Glenn, these amp modelers are getting really good! Can barely tell the difference!
That bassist is amazing, watching him play was mesmerizing
That rhythm tone was killer when you were playing, the riffs were, coincidentally, almost identical to some from the old Playstation Twisted Metal 3 OST, which also sounded awesome back in the day
Whoah. I didn't expect Glenn review this.
Nice one.
The clean chorus sounded *noice*
@5:00 He bends to the B with his pinky! That is some crazy technique if I ever saw one, well played!
No jokes on bass players when they have arms that can crush your skull. Kidding. Great video Glenn
This is obviously not the point of the video, but it's really fucking cool you brought Anthony Crawford to play bass for the demo. He is a monster bass player and has played with some of the biggest names in the business (Ray Charles, James Brown and B.B. King just to name a few). It must have been a delight having him in the studio.
Interesting unit, I will be sticking with my Helix for no other reason than that it has been reliable and robust on the road thus far.
I have the ge200 and that is phenomenal u can never go wrong with a mooer product
I was almost sold on the Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit but am now considering this. And that noise reduction is definitely killer!
Nice bass-playing!
Just bought the GE300, thx for the quick demo
Just a quick comment here: Most of the newer amp modelers sound great and given enough time, you'll find exactly what you're ears are looking for. What separates them so much now is the UI, which is exactly what Line 6 has really nailed with the Helix. There isn't a product on the market that's as approachable for the common guitar player as the Helix is. It's a brilliant piece of tech. I know we love to trash Line 6 for their gear, but I've done a complete 180 on them since I spent about an hour or so with my buddy's Helix Floor. I'd love to see the Helix LT vs the Mooer GE300 in a timed "make a great tone" video.
Completely different but check out the Vintage Revolution PedalPro from Italy. It does not have the variety of Helix but the quality on what is does have is warmer. Whether that is what you are looking for is another question, exceptional for certain material. It has 14 analog effects and DSP for Reverb. Nothing else out like it really, the first digitally controlled analog unit and remains to be the only serious one.
I was kind of half watching this while on facebook. I was thinking the tones sound banging then realised it was a digital modeller. I'm so glad I still have great tone and not have to buy a tube amp again. Sounds like a solid product
Being a biker this might be a viable option for me where I need a compact rig that will fit in a saddle bag
That's Ola Englund Solar guitar, awesome!
I always thought the true test of these multi effects amp sim pedals, where the mid range gain/overdrive. I find in the midrange overdrive is where you can really hear the digital artifacts that I hate in these pedals. The more metal sound the less you notice the less you notice the artifacts. That’s what I find anyways.
Not the biggest fan of sponsored reviews. I know you have to pay the bills, but that's not the reason i'm a subscriber.
Better product. Finding a bass player like him!
Too expensive. Helix LT is a better buy, imo. It might cost a little extra, but considering you'd likely be using the thing for years, the extra cost shouldn't be a big deal. And Line6 is really committed to supporting the whole Helix ecosystem as well, there's really no telling how it'll go for GE300.
They should've went for an "in-between" option for $500. Would've made for an interesting product too, as with these floor modelers it seems it's either 3 switches, or five million. They could've done a six-switch version and focused on the sound and usability (instead of synth crap which is cool and all, but very few would actually use it in practice).
Or something like the helix effects to go with the preamp live
@animaegray
Bro the problem of those ridiculous prices, is due to two products actually:
1) Kemper
2) Axe Fx
Any company that thinks to offer a product with quality shades will set its price based on those two pieces of shit, if Kemper and Axe Fx cost each 500 usd it would be ideal for us musicians.
But most guitarists sell them smoke and buy it, with false advertising, with the stupid tale of "NOW IF WE HAVE THE MOST ADVANCED ALGORITHMS, THE TONE OF A REAL VALVE AMP" and it's the same crap as before but with an eq globally modified and everyone buys it at 1000 usd more.
We should be grateful to companies like Ignite amps that with their wonderful plugin emissary "FREE" we have the same quality of Kemper or Axe Fx and we saved 2000 usd in the process
@@butcher_0392 for the price of a kemper or an axefx I´ll still be playing tube amps for life. And when I compare GE300 with an used 5153 50w I still prefer buying the amp. In that sense ge200 stills a killer!
@@pitaorj
If friend very well that is, unfortunately most do not think so and deceive themselves saying:
If a quality tube amp costs normally between 1000 and 2000 usd, why not pay 2500 usd and I have more than 100 amp?
But what they do not know is that they are not 100 amps, it's an amp with slight modifications in EQ, and at factory it does not sound exactly like a real one without match Eq, the same as you can do with a Pod X3 Live and it costs 200 usd
@@butcher_0392 really not sure what's the point of comparing a VST to an all-in-one hardware solution. It's a totally different game. Not to mention that Kemper and Axe FX are studio-grade equipment that is overkill for your average bedroom guitarist (unless you have money, of course).
Mooer should've aimed for the $500 "sweet spot", this is what POD HD500x and Boss GT units used to cost. With modern multi-fx (meaning IR capabilities and higher quality amp sim algos) units you're either look at "small, cheap, but with noticeable downsides", or at "large, expensive, and somewhat overkill for a hobbyist guitarist". There isn't a middle ground.
Tbh, I only want this for the synth processing
that clean chorus sounds amazing
I love Mooer Pedals, cheap and cheerful...except this one, lol :)
I would be more impressed with the processing power vs helix and axe fx .. More than just sound but the actual gut's of it
Nothing will beat Fractual Audio in pure processing power and tone. I would bet the Helix has considerably more processing poor as well.
You need to try the amp match feature! It works SO well
Love the intro statement about MIC products!
Anthony Crawford has played with Allan Holdsworth, CHON and many others. Dude is astounding
I recently got a Mooer Preamp Live. I promptly listed most of my tube amps for sale.
i am loving that bass tone
Everyone who makes a video about modelers always go 'nowadays digital modelers are getting closer' or 'now the difference in sound is very small'. While I highly doubt they would tell the difference in a blind test. There's a fear of acknowledging there's no fucking difference in sound anymore. You can argue that the feeling is not the same, but nobody talks about that
Dang dude! Well done! I love your personality, why did it take me so long to find you in this world?
Do check out.... Well, every other video by him. This was the tip of the iceberg of who Glenn is. Awesome dude, but also Fuck you Glenn (recurring joke around these videos)
I'm still rocking the GE200 for live shows. Beats lugging tube amps around 100% ... the 5 people in the audience can't tell the difference anyways.
I ditched multi-effects because I found myself messing around with it rather than doing something productive...like practicing:) or working on new projects. The Bias Amp/FX seem to solve that problem because I'm too lazy to connect my guitar to PC each time so I practice on my amp, then when the time comes - it's great for recording at night and experiment with mixing.
oh shiet that tone and that mix sounds incredible, great job!
proud user of the GE200 here; yeah, Mooer is killing it
happy to see it didn't get smashed by that 'hammer of truth' hehehehe
"Sponsored by Mooer" might have helped a bit haha :)
Well, it's not a "Fearless Gear Review", so... Anything that isn't, probably should be taken with a grain of salt(?) :P
@@atrates damn, i miss that bit
pardon me hahaha
I have one and i love it, because I can tone capture.
Did you run the bass through the ge300 as well?
good question
@@dirtyharry1881 I was wondering this myself.
i didn't see any bass heads/cabs in the amp list from the user guide.
that would be a deal breaker for me.
Damn that recording is AMAZING! Wish the biggest bands could take note because I have heard absolute trash recordings in the recent years even though technology has moved on...
Also, I own mooer products myself and they are awesome from bottom to top
MetallicA
@@bipbipletucha They have become such a huge joke i don't even talk about them anymore and I still respect their playing but i don't mention because of how awful it is to listen to their recordings
@@DLTX1007 yep
Metallica is a prime example and proof that it wasn't the riffs or songwriting that turned the black album into the number one selling metal album of all time, it was the ridiculous amount of time, money, stress, and effort they put into recording it.
But also, nobody wants to pay for music anymore, but expect bands to pay the same amount to record... so we get what we deserve.
I own a jsx. This sounds pretty dang close
I just bought a Hotone Ampero MP-100 about a week ago. It only has half as many footswitches available, but for $400 U.S. it's probably the smallest and cheapest amp modeler out there. You should check that one out, if you ever get the chance.
The guitar players playing has a young Buckethead vibe too it
That wah is good enough for the Hammet stuff, is a total yes for me, also love the pitch shifter...add another expression pedal and boom
Thanks for the great preview, Glen! I am looking to step-up to a floor modeler, and I would love to see a shoot-out between the Moorer, Helix, Headrush, and Boss GT-1000. Please make it so!!!
playadeguitar You should check amplifire 6 and 12 also 👍
GE200 for people who arent much into tone capture, external fx loops and synth but want the mooer quality amp sim anyway.
What a delightful pedal and multi-effects pedals have come a long way! Currently I have the boss me-80 multi-effects pedal and and that's crap compared to this pedal. Although boss has never disappointed
That mix was fucking awesome.
I agree with that Mooer is a product that is kicking big name brands asses!!
Wow, that drum kit sounds phenomenal
One of the only channels I click the like button before I even watch the vid because I KNOW its gonna be a good video..thanks Glenn for all the good shit over the last few yrs..and the Rule #2 bassist hat i got from u a few yrs ago was priceless at a few of the gigs i played whenever i got a bass players panties in a bunch over it..and guess what I noticed??? I NEVER got shit for that hard from ANYONE that actually knew how to play their bass, was always a hack bassist, lol.(funny side note- I hopped onto bass for that band as I'm primarily a guitarist,so it made it even funnier in the end that I was the bassist whenever I got called an asshole for "picking on bass players" so to speak.lol
Sounds good. So polished. Can tell it's not an amp, but in a good way?
Honestly one of the best live guitar sounds I've ever heard was Kreator, who were using a Kemper. It just sounded so clean and precise, and sat perfectly in the mix. It sounded a lot better than many bands I've seen with 100W stacks onstage.
The remark on Henning! Awesome!!
"That's Henning Pauly's job"
LMAO!! I love his channel, but yea I'm not watching a half hour demo.
Ola would be proud of the tone coming out of that solar.
I actually have a Mooer distortion pedal, and for what I paid for it, it was really kick ass. Maybe not amazing, but then again I wouldn't know if it's studio standard. But it's great for what I need it for. Definitely interested in this now.
That grindy tone with the synth setting on the Powerbell would be perfect for a sound like the organ part in "Blue Collar Man"

I am really interested in this for an easy direct recording option. Would love to see more on this!!!
Screen on multifx should be a real step up to any makers. Something like bulky multifx should offer more besides the fx, sound, quality. We talk about how amazing a smartphone today, their technology, display. So interesting we can do touch screen on multifx.
A 30 minute looper? Holy shit. Lol. That’s crazy. These things sound pretty awesome. I don’t understand how awesome the mooer amp sim stuff is.
i bought a roland vg 88 in 2002, it fuckin rocked, i still use it alongside my Helix
Dude, I've been looking for some good reviews of that, like yesterday.
Thanks Glen, great timing!
Hey Glenn I got distracted with how awesome the bass player was in the demo!!
You can also use the wah to make the buzzy sounds from your signal to sound great. This unit is just... Maaah..
sounds ok, still la bit thin compared to higher end gear....like most sims these days, if you have decent production skills you can make anything sound acceptable to an extent. Awesome work as always man.
Hey Glenn was hoping if you could review the Zoom G3xn it's a budget guitar processor wanted to know your overall thoughts on it
That
Sounds
KILLER
The Mooer GE200 now looks excellent at a third of the price and the amp sims are just as good - the reviews struggle to show any meaningful difference. Most of the ME300 extras you will never have the time to getting around to using if you have a life!
Totally new guts in the GE300.
Jake Dreyer in your studio !!! wow you hit the jackpot. Incredible guitar player !!!!
Hello Mr. Glen,I honestly enjoy your videos.Always be honest
If you use it with XLR it has a ground lift switch for reducing hum
Those bass delts tho
wat
That casual stab at Henning! 😂👌🏻
Really cool demo song
I loved the mix!
It seems like high gain options are everywhere, but good representations of mild to mid gain are tougher to find... distorted fender champ, deluxe, vox ac15 or ac30 and marshall plexi, not hot eve plexi... classic ac /dc or Free plexi,,, also the helix has 4 loops for all the stuff the ge doesn't do, but for the price, that ge really sounds cool.
Synth tones reminds me of the 8 bit video games hard rock tones 😂🤘🏽 cool Pedal overall 🤘🏽
Or Royal Blood.
Sounds killer especialy in full mix.
Mooer did great job here!
I think this will give the hellix a run for its money. But i think it could be sold around $500-600 US.
"Half hour demo" is generous. Haha! Henning's vids on things like this are usually much longer and sometimes episodic!
The GE300 is damn impressive in the mix!
That rhythm tone tho. The edge between crackling lightning rod from hell and uh ...bubble bath. It's so fine.
I love my ge 200 its a beast ! what IR did
you use ?
You're playing guitar a lot tighter these days! You sure have improved since you started the channel!
Right!? Somebody's been riffing around a bit more.
Great intro music bro!
The only issue with the Mooer processor vs something like a Line 6 is getting it repaired should something go wrong. Back when I had a Pod XTL, the power input jack somehow disconnected from the board so the unit wouldn't power up. Since it was under warranty, I took it to the guitar shop, they sent it to their tech guy and it was fixed in a couple of days (they had a bit of a backlog). With the Mooer, it's pretty much only online importers who sell them, so if something happens that it stops working or something breaks, who knows how much it could cost or how long it could take to get it fixed.
