    for years, the knock on the elektron digitakt was that it had no time stretch, and most importantly, no slicing/sample chopping features. that left hip hop producers working on this machine finding all kinds of really laborious workarounds, which now are no longer necessary.
    the 1.5 update has revolutionised the elektron digitakt and gave it new blood. so, that should make this video kinda superfluous, right? well, not that fast…
    even acknowledging the great work made with the “SLICE” and “WERP” machines, I still have a few gripes with it...

    I came for the digitakt review but stayed for the nasty beat. When you laid down the bass-line everything came together so smoothly. And then this vinyl-scratch trick was like a cherry on top. Awesome!

      yes! can't take full credit though. I saw a video like 10 years ago on how to do it in ableton, can't remember who posted it. I remembered the process though and applied it to the digitakt and wouldnt you know it, it works great!

    Good stuff. I own a bunch of Elektrons. Imo where they shine is the individual trig manipulation. For example you could’ve added delay or verb to one snare only or recorded some pitch shifts on certain hats, etc. Micro timing is another huge advantage. For better or worse Elektron, Mpc, sp 404 all have their own strengths and weaknesses… you can do great stuff with any, but really need to give in to how they want you to work, lol. I use them all as I find each inspiring and frustrating, lol. I don’t think the Elektron impairs you in making Boom-bap… but if you prefer to make your Boom-bap by sampling and resampling… it wouldn’t be my choice.

      yeah p-locking is hands don the best thing about elektron machines! I'm gonna have to do an sp404mkii+digitakt combo video and see what happens!

    I pretty much only use my DT for lofi and boom bap beats and I think it does a great job. Sure, there are a few workarounds that needs to be done compared to other samplers, but I don't really consider it as an issue. It's all about workflow.
    Me personally, I don't even use slice mode to chop samples. My workflow evolved before 1.5 and I feel it's a great fit for me.
    When I chop break for instance, I put the same break on all 8 tracks and edit (and trig lock) the start and end points until happy. I then live record the different chops, copy the trigs from the different tracks and paste 'em all on one single track, making the remaining 7 tracks ready for new samples. This works great for me and isn't as tedious as it might sound once you learn your way around the unit. And to be honest, pressing those clickety clack sounding buttons feels nice. I don't mind doing it over and over.
    Also, I noticed while you were locking the trigs for the scratch to FILL that you did so with each individual trig. There's no need for that. The DT can trig lock multiple trigs at the same time. It's just a matter of pressing as many trigs as you have fingers available and locking your parameter of choice. Big time saver.

      that sounds... like a lot of work ahaha!
      but sometimes that's exactly what you need to really really focus on what you're doing. I noticed a big improvement in my beats when I stopped using the autoslice feature on simpler in ableton... much better when you do it manually, you put some heart and brain into it!

    • @mikaelmareld
      @mikaelmareld 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BIGUMAMI Like I said, it's not really that big of a deal. Copy/Paste goes fast and manually slicing your sample often creates better sounding beats like you point out.I do the same as you when I work in Ableton.
      I think we're a bit spoiled with what technology can do nowadays that we stay in the comfortable lane and let the machines and computers do the work for us. Slicing manually was the staple not too long ago and now people act like theres a huge workload involved to it just cause the computer can do it in a few seconds.

    that there are no starting point changes for the slices is really a problem like the fact that there is no mute group. I think this machine was really made for people who make electronic music and load their sound banks. I have quite a few samplers old and new. I reconnected the digitakt following the update but I think that for those who like to sample, there are other machines for that. Otherwise it's still a good sampler that's solid and when you understand the machine you get something very quickly. excuse me for the mistakes I use google translate 😅.peace

      You could also use one shot and manually trigger each step to get the slices where you want.

    @ 2:55 there’s no “slicing algorithm”. It’s just a static grid. It doesn’t work well with loops that aren’t quantised
