Marvel Legends History: ToyBiz to Hasbro Action Figures | 20th Anniversary | Part 2

- Happy Birthday Marvel Legends! We're celebrating 20 years since ToyBiz first started making the line of action figures for adult collectors!
In part one, I recap the history of how we got here. Humble beginnings of Canadian business Chantex, to when they became Charan Toy Subsidiary, and eventually bought out by an American company to become ToyBiz. We will look at how they first produced DC super heroes before making a deal with Marvel. Explore the 90's as they teamed up Avi Arad to sell toys alongside cartoons like X-Men the Animated Series, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Hulk, and Silver Surfer. I'll explain how Ike Perlmutter sat on the Marvel throne after Ron Perelman led the company to chapter 11 bankruptcy. Before Marvel would sell to Disney for $4 billion, they would sell movie rights of many properties to other companies like Fox and Sony. But, in 2001 ToyBiz brand manager Jesse Falcon would have the brilliant idea to make highly articulated action figures with lots of sculpted and painted detail. They would add comic book reprints and diorama stands to help sell the idea that these were collectibles with Spider-Man Classics. With it's success, they would launch Marvel Legends in 2002.
In Part 2, we discuss Series 1 including Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Toad. We will learn about Build-A-Figures, Chase Figures, the demise of ToyBiz, the abysmal early days of Hasbro AND… their heroic “RETURN OF MARVEL LEGENDS” with SDCC Thor. Hasbro tried the Marvel Universe figures to regain sales, but it failed. They rebukt the line with the inclusion of MCU figures, the INFINITE SERIES, and their modern LEGENDS SERIES. We will discuss the current situation with Deluxe Figure releases, HasLab Projects, and the future of the line. Currently, we are seeing the golden age of action figures with the current 20th anniversary line, bringing us full circle.

My first marvel legend was series 1 captain America, back in 2002. I was one of those people who really missed the toybiz days when hasbro had first gotten the license, but now , modern hasbro blows most of the old toybiz stuff out of the water. 2022 is a crazy time for marvel legends, 20 years since marvel legends started 2002-2022, it's the 15th anniversary since hasbros first wave of ML 2007-2022, and its the 10 year anniversary since marvel legends returned 2012-2022. I think it'd be so cool for them to release figures in all of the different marvel legends packaging styles from throughout the years. As well as all the different huge character anniversaries that are happening this year too. It's a great time to be a collector.

As a kid, I started with toy biz and that created me the actual nostalgia with marvel legends, which I recognize it’s an epic improvement on action figure details 👌

Got my first 2 a couple days ago. Black Widow and Mystique, and I ordered Winter Soldier I found on sale yesterday.
First figure I got was Magneto wave 3. While now I wish they had repurposed the Cap body rather than the Ironman one, at the time I thought it was amazing and prompted me to start collecting.
I feel ya on this. It WAS amazing for the time but they've come so far that it's difficult to look back and remember how special they were.

Wonderfully detailed history lesson! SINCERELY enjoyed this (part 1 and 2)!! I started collecting this with Series 1, backtracking and buying Kay-Bee Spider-Man Classics as well. Haven't stopped since! Got shelves and shelves (and bins!) of all these figures!
I can only hope the recent trend of NOT detailing some of their recent figures (like Spider-Man No Way Home Spider-Men figures and Retro Spider-Man series Shocker with the black lines) stops. They are making them look WAY too cheap and making them based on the cartoonish animated series, although nice, is really making them all look cheap, plastic-y and undetailed.
Hasbro REALLY need to get back to detailed quality, the comic-based versions and to also stop making the cartoony versions. The 20th anniversary Captain America seems to be a step in that direction (love the looks of that figure and its accessories!), although the PRICE is way too steep (maybe $25 AT MOST, but definitely not over $32+; that's sheer robbery). As for the BAFs, they need to keep those rolling out! The recent Armadillo one is a perfect example!

Ah man, thank you SO much! And I agree with everything you just said! While the line continues to get better and better in many ways, we have started getting some that look way too toy-ish. It's a bad trend that I hope gets nipped soon.

When I was kid my first marvel legends figure was the series 1 Iron Man. When I was an adult it was the Civil War Movie Iron Man

Awesome video! Its so interesting to learn the behind the scenes history of Toy biz & Hasbro. As a fairly new collector to marvel lengends 2019. My first figure was a venom. Since then I'm pushing upwards of 96 figures. Including the haslab Sentinel. I missed out on Galactus & hopefully will have to look towards the secondary market. Like always great video yo 🙂 🔥 🔥

Great series! My first marvel legends was actually from the precursor to Marvel legends “Spider-Man classics” although I’m not sure that counts I’ve only really collected Spider-Man safe for some I maybe couldn’t resist

I jumped on marvel universe 3.75 first as I had nostalgia for g.i joe scale figures but always more of a comic fan. I remember when I sold my whole 3.75 collection,as I had moved into marvel legends!!🤷♂️🤙🤙
