I grew up Kent and still reside there. My parents grew up in the area and my dad has similar stories. Says his friend took guitar lessons from Joe Walsh.
This song drove other guitarists nuts trying to figure how to play it because there were some "bad chords" done on purpose. Some may call me "boomer" but there's no denying the best rock came from my generation of musicians. I've been playing guitar for 57 years (and trumpet before that) and Joe Walsh is in my top-5 list of favorite guitarists. I switched to guitar in 1963 after hearing Muddy Waters on the AM radio, bought a garage sale guitar that same week and started to learn to play the blues.
Great to hear of your journey, brother. It has a familiar ring. I started playing guitar in 1970 when I was 15, though music had bitten me hard already when I was just 9 years old. Back in the day, local FM stations played entire albums without interruption. My first exposure to Joe Walsh's guitar genius was late at night in 1970, lying on the living room floor as the FM station played the "Rides Again" album front to back. Bought the album as soon as I had the money. I always loved that photo of the 3 of them on chopper motorcycles in the snow.

James Gang was in the late 60s early 70s - Joe Walsh, who also sang later on with the Eagles, was one of the singers in this group. Got to sing night they drove ole Dixie down with Levon. Better stop or I'll go on and on.✌out!
I have known and loved this band for years and had zero idea of the band's name or the name of this song. It was on the radio all the time back then. Very informative.
I met Joe when I worked one of his shows in the 80's. He talked about the "Go to sleep" call. He said that when he would get back to his hotel room after a concert, and before he got to partying, he would call the front desk and ask them for a "Go to sleep call at 7:00 AM". They would say "Do you mean a wake up call, Mr Walsh?" He'd say "No!, I want you to call my room at 7:00 AM, and if I'm still up partying, tell me to go to sleep!" Classic Joe Walsh.

I saw them live in 71, at a little venue Sherwood Country Club in suburban Indianapolis and I also saw The Winters Brothers live at Melody Skateland on the west side of Indy. We had some awesome music back then. A good Joe Walsh tune to check out is "The Confessor"
Saw James Gang in 1971 at the Phoenix Coliseum..Procol Harum opened.. they rode chopped Harleys up onto the stage.. Kriss and Fox on one and Walsh the other, parked them in the back of the stage..Fox had the first chrome set of drums I ever saw.. they blew the roof off..
Way b4 Footloose. This tune saved me from a huge hangover in Manitowoc, Wisconsin back in 1981. Long story, short time. LOL Go see the maritime museum featuring the USS Cobia. Worth it. Bring the clubs, because there are some great fairways to hit in the area.
My wife and I host a radio morning talk show in Michigan (She’s Lacy James and I am Brandon James). Obviously, our coworkers call us the James Gang and this is our theme/intro song on the show. It’s perfect for it, besides the obvious for our names. Such a fun tune! Love the reaction.
That percussion breakdown is so much fun. On their 1996 reunion tour, drummer Jimmy Fox brought out his sons to play the percussion instruments during that part of this song. It may be on YT somewhere; audience went nuts.
The James Gang played all the time at the Moons Club in Fayetteville, Ark....the last time I saw them in Fayetteville was on Dickson Street in the Library...They loved playing the night clubs...

Damn what a show. Got to sing night they drove ole Dixie down with Levon. Better stop or I'll go on and on.✌out!
Do “Walk Away”
There's a great video on You Tube from one of the European TV shows of that song. Joe looks completely stoned.
I'll second that!
YES!!
😂
One of the most under-rated guitar players ever. A master performer... "I don't have a drinking problem. I have only been drunk once in my life. Started in 1974 and ended in 1987..." -JW
The Bomber is another classic by The James Gang!
Absolutely. The bomber is awesome
Full agreement - I've been campaigning for "The Bomber" for months
I haven't heard this in forever, thank you! Keeping it alive. Bless you.
" I only got drunk once in my life. It lasted twenty years"

Great dance tune back in the day......still so much fun to dance too. Both my jr. high and high school played recorders for the students to dance to during lunch period.
The “dun, dun, dun, du, dun” could make you think of some Aerosmith riffs.
Maybe ZZ Top too
I saw them live in 71, at a little venue Sherwood Country Club in suburban Indianapolis and I also saw The Winters Brothers live at Melody Skateland on the west side of Indy. We had some awesome music back then. A good Joe Walsh tune to check out is "The Confessor"
Joe Walsh, a true soul rocker in every way.
"Those Shoes" by the Eagles is a must-listen!
Never find original video/song cuz Eagles are different about that stuff and i'm sure it wood get blocked like a low field goal.
Saw them in 1971, one of my first big shows. Jackson Browne opened with an acoustic set, no one knew who he was!
"I got two words for you Don Henley Joe F'n Walsh!
Joshua Sparks Don felder 😳😳😳😳
@@keelsmac01 😂 I was just quoting Dennis Leary
Joshua Sparks hahaha...got it!
2nd. Love some Joe Walsh! Kenny Loggins was Footloose.
My first concert....51 yrs ago. Gulp. Funny, I don't feel that old! Lol. Joe Walsh on Daryl's House is pretty cool, too.
The live version with the Eagles is rockin’, too
Yah, that's classic the facial expressions and that screaming strat! Love it
My wife and I host a radio morning talk show in Michigan (She’s Lacy James and I am Brandon James). Obviously, our coworkers call us the James Gang and this is our theme/intro song on the show. It’s perfect for it, besides the obvious for our names. Such a fun tune! Love the reaction.
When James Gang was going strong Kenny Loggins was in Loggins and Messina another great group. Try Angry Eyes and Your Mamma Don't Dance.
For Loggins and Messina...ya GOTTA do Valhellava!
That percussion breakdown is so much fun. On their 1996 reunion tour, drummer Jimmy Fox brought out his sons to play the percussion instruments during that part of this song. It may be on YT somewhere; audience went nuts.
The confessor next!! You wont be disappointed 🤘
First concert I ever went to was the James Gang. I was six. It was an outdoor event. Joe Walsh is such a showman.
Next do Marc Bolan and T Rex "Get it on" "Twentieth Century Boy"
20th Century Boy ROCKS!
Yes T Rex, second that
Jeepstar too while were at it.
Children of the Revolution
"Solid Gold Easy Action", "Metal Guru".... Marc and T Rex were so great. Sadly, sadly missed.
indeed... not only you keep music alive... actually you bring it back to life! thanks!
A friend asked me if I would draw the starry sky image off the James Gang “Bang” album. I charged him a Lid
Great Album! First James Gang Album I bought. My sister had Rides Again.
Haven't seen a good lid since '78.
That's Tommy Bolin killing it on James Gang : Bang! Alexis, etc.
theirs also a great band named Bang from PA
I saw Joe Walsh with the Eagles a couple of years ago. Joe played a lot of his own stuff too. Best concert in my life
If this song were recorded today using Pro Tools and Auto-Tune, it would just be called “#49”
That's funny. Thanks for the laugh.
Gotcha!! Agreed!!
I’m so glad that you appreciate Funk 49 as much as I do. Best use of cowbell in a rock song. Footloose??? You crack me up!
Said it before Jamel, you’re missing out and doing yourself a disservice by not watching Joe’s performances
yup
Understand but hes mentioned many times; he normally listens to the audio version first and then circles back to a live version, when possible.
Rock and roll at it's best. I cut my teeth on this music. Fourteen years old when this was released. The best of times.
Jamal you should react to “Low Rider” by War
YES!
Love War but they are from L.A. and so is Jamal he's probably heard it a lot already
The James Gang played all the time at the Moons Club in Fayetteville, Ark....the last time I saw them in Fayetteville was on Dickson Street in the Library...They loved playing the night clubs...
