I know you guys aren’t big power trio fans, but that’s where all the amazing guitar riffs from the late 60’s-early 70’s originated. That’s also the source of most legendary rock/blues guitarists: Hendrix, Clapton, Gibbons, Trower, Walsh, Beck, Stevie Ray, & more. You commented that Trower sounded expectedly like the genre, but you need to realize that all these guys played riffs and styles that we were all hearing for the first time. Seminal stuff.
Robin Trower didn't play a damn thing that Jimi hadn't already played. LOL He was a great guitar player and master of the style, but there isn't a single thing about Trower's solo stuff that sounded like it was "being heard for the first time." He just did a really good job of mastering an already burgeoning style.

I LOVE that any one reacting to this song always lights up like a little kid on Christmas morning and see's snow up to the window sill and at least 20 EXTRA presents around the tree...
My older brother played this all the time on our parents stereo in the living room when they weren’t home. At age 14, I was so captivated by the drumming. It was far more enjoyable to listen to and try to learn than the simple basic 4/4 just keeping the beat that was on the radio at the time. This and Chicago had my full attention as the drummers used the entire kit, not just bass drum, snare, hi-hat with the obligatory cymbal crash every 4 bars
I must be getting old! It just amazes me that there are so many classics that you guys have never heard. Glad y'all are catching up and discovering some of the best music on the planet. It's fun and enlightening to see your reaction after hearing something for the first time that I've been listening to for decades.
Great funky beat. Next should be Rocky Mountain Way. Dudes, you have barely scrapped the surface of great 60's and 70's rock and roll. Many more great songs out there to BLOW YOUR MIND!
Gentlemen, Joe Walsh is ranked #54 on Rolling Stone magazines 100 greatest guitarists. Joe joined the Eagles in 1974 and he and ex Eagle band mate, guitarist Don Felder, created the classic guitar solo on the track "Hotel California". Joe has had an amazing solo career which you would do well to review. Good info to have the next time you listen to a James Gang cut.
Per their 3hr documentary on Netflix, Joe Walsh was still in England playing with Barnstorm in 1974. It was the following year, he joined the Eagles to replace Bernie Leadon, who was tired of the band's lack of success and started to play for Linda Ronstadt.
We drove 7 hours on July 18, 1974 to see Joe Walsh & Barnstorm in Sedalia, MO at the Ozark Music Festival. EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All 3 days were hot as hell & worth every penny we spent to get there. Funk #49 woke the dead the Friday night they played!!! Glad you bopped along.
Thanks guys. Love Funk 49. That was the first song I learned to play. It basically became our high school fight song at pep rally's. At football games we had a stage setup in the bleachers and the marching band in front. Played it on an early 70s SG.
This reminds me a little bit of when I was a college student fifty years ago (1969?), listening to this on vinyl...except my buddies and I weren't sipping on bourbon. A college highlight was seeing Joe Walsh stopped at a red light in Boulder, Colorado driving his Mercedes Unimog.
Right... the James Gang opened for The Who in 1970 for and handful of dates in the US and the U.K. Pete and Joe became friends and at one point Joe gifted Pete a Gibson. Pete recently told the story that he later sold that guitar to help fund a sailboat purchase and he hoped that Joe wasn’t cross with him. The song “Sheraton Gibson” on Pete’s first solo album was written after a day of hanging out with some of the members of the James Gang during that 1970 tour.
And that, gentlemen, is why I call it a party in a song. I've been suggesting it to various reactors for a year so I'm thrilled that 2 of my faves, you & Jamel, have finally done it! Glad you liked it, guys. Anything from that album ("James Gang Rides Again") is a musical experience, "Ashes The Rain & I" being a favorite & a very different side of The James Gang.💙🌿💚
Hey A&A you are in for a treat today. This song was meant to be turned up loud. In fact, inside the album cover, it read:"MADE LOUD TO BE PLAYED LOUD"! Funk 49 is from the album, James Gang rides again. 1970. Can't wait to see your reaction! ❤🎸🎸🤘
"Rides Again" was my introduction to Joe Walsh. Saw them at the old Aragon Ballroom way back in '71 on a bill with, among others, Mason Proffit, Jack Bruce's band and the Siegal-Schwall band. A long show in a small venue (maybe 2K people?) and it was great. Thanks for the great reminder of those thrilling days of yesteryear! Cheers....

Great, great, great. I was hoping you’d do “Funk 49”. Joe Walsh, one of the best guitar players ever. He even got Jimmy Page to start using a Gibson Les Paul.
Was Walsh the guy who liked giving guitars to other guitarists? I read that he would do stuff like get on a plane to London to give someone a special guitar.
Lucie Melahn That’s him. He says he likes to give guitars or equipment to people who have had an influence on him or been a hero. He says he likes to balance the Karma that way. Very cool.
@@robertacolarette1594 He gave one (a Gretsch?) to Pete Townshend that he wrecked on Top of the Pops and he regretted it. That's the appearance that got them banned from the BBC. Gentlemen, it's been a year since all this enthusiasm for The James Gang. It's time to ride with them again! You've sampled their funky, jammy side so now I recommend two songs (both atmospheric for Andy) that'll demonstrate their artistic range: The Bomber (a banger of there ever was one and dripping in sauce) and Collage (rock poetry set to strings and a Joe Walsh song without a lead guitar). "A Life of Illusion" is an underrated Joe Walsh track from the early 80's.
Fred, could not agree more. what an absolutely wonderful/beautiful/lyrically poignant song "A Life of Illusion" is.
There Goes the Neighborhood - pretty damn god album!
The smoker you drink, the player you get.
Words to live by.
Anybody else remember the “Joe Walsh for president” bumper stickers?
I remember for sure.
V
"Vote For Me" from Songs for a Dying Planet
Didn't he run in the Party Party?
Oh wow! I must be old 😬. Correction: I must be really cool 😎
I do,,,,👍👍👍😎
Hey Andy & Alex. I just played this again because I love this song and thought I may as well listen with you again. Loved the reaction, A+ and an A+ song. Joe Walsh is a good one for sure. Check out "Walk Away" form the James Gang, another favorite of mine. Cheers Gents!
They're not? I've seen them gush over The Police, Rush, ELP and others. Not sure how you come to that conclusion?
@@DrNothing23 thinking the same thing.
@@mrgmusicclass Listen to Daydream then .
mrgmusicclass Jimi was great but he didn’t invent every guitar lick out there. He himself noted many guitarist that influenced him.
i used to climb mulit 1/2 mile to 20 mile 1.5k- 22k feet hillclimbs on me mt bike in the Manashtash and Tanuem ridge area. Best damn Mt. Biking in the USA hands down. Yes been to moab, cali, montana , oregon , western wa, and many others.
Its some green trails but balls deep in black diamond trails. I hit 51mph on the upper Manashtash trail. Supper bowled out....i was crazy back then.
Oh yea. I was listing to Joe Walshes greatest hits ....also spiining wheel from Blood Sweat and Tears !
Holy sh*t! This is going to be epic. I always heard the Eagles hired him to give them more “Rock” credibly. It worked for me.
It has turned into Joe Walsh day here. "Turn to stone" just came on after "Life of Illusion", "In The City", and "Ordinary Average Guy". Thank you Alex & Andy for getting me deeper into my old music collection.
I LOVE that any one reacting to this song always lights up like a little kid on Christmas morning and see's snow up to the window sill and at least 20 EXTRA presents around the tree...
"Walk Away", "The Bomber" and "Midnight Man" . All 'musts' by James Gang
The Bomber
Also White Man/ Black Man. The lyrics of which tell that nothing has changed in the last 50years.
It also has a truly wonderful solo at the outro.
If you're interested in a Joe Walsh solo tune, give a listen to "Turn to Stone."
'74 version is better than the earlier one.
A perfect song for a Friday jam!
"They took us out of the sauce and then they put us back in the sauce." Love it!
Pure party song, I wouldn't dive too deep into the lyrics. Music the way it was meant to be!
Got to hear Meadows another great jam.
Bachman Turner Overdrive - BLUE COLLAR. You will love the guitar work. Randy Bachman is very underrated.
So glad you guys got to this one. I think you should try The Bomber next (make sure it's the version that's just over 7 minutes).
Thank you, I recommended this one a few months ago and I am so pleased you have decided to react
I must be getting old! It just amazes me that there are so many classics that you guys have never heard. Glad y'all are catching up and discovering some of the best music on the planet. It's fun and enlightening to see your reaction after hearing something for the first time that I've been listening to for decades.
Well said..I am 65 years old..I have heard these songs forever, so I am totally diggin' on their reactions..You guys rock!!
And they did an excellent version of Turn to Stone live with the Eagles
Per their 3hr documentary on Netflix, Joe Walsh was still in England playing with Barnstorm in 1974. It was the following year, he joined the Eagles to replace Bernie Leadon, who was tired of the band's lack of success and started to play for Linda Ronstadt.
@@dunhill1 yes, it was '75. Thanks for pointing that out
After their second play through it mysteriously slips into their s tier playlist 🤭🔥
Joe Walsh working super hard on guitar and vocals and he owns the song, but Dale Peters' bass line is absolutely fantastic in this!
Now that's the way to start a weekend, swimming in the James Gang sauce!
Omg these guys were so great. That whole album rocks.
This was Joe Walsh's precursor to the Eagles.
Do "The Bomber: next!!!!
Saw Joe play "The Bomber" in '71 and RPI in Troy.Tore the roof off!
I have an early vinyl copy of "The Bomber" released before they censored the "Bolero" section out.
@@rickintx1125 I have that version also. Without it, the song id still great but it's always missing that cool Bolero.
Thanks guys. Love Funk 49. That was the first song I learned to play. It basically became our high school fight song at pep rally's. At football games we had a stage setup in the bleachers and the marching band in front. Played it on an early 70s SG.
Hell to the yeah!! 🎸🎤🎶 Excited for this one ☝️ 👍🏼
The tastiest guitar opening ever.
I love the way the whiskey in the decanter behind you keeps time with the music!
At around the time of the James Gang. Pete Townshend stated that Joe Walsh was his then, favorite guitarist.
Damn! I'd never heard that. Pete Townshend is a guitar god so that's high praise indeed!
Yeah, I think I also heard that when Joe heard that, Pete got a Les Paul from Joe as a gift.
Right... the James Gang opened for The Who in 1970 for and handful of dates in the US and the U.K.
Townsend also thought Tommy Bolin, who took over for Joe when he went solo was the next great guitarist....sadly he died a couple years later.
This is definitely true, remember reading this in Creem magazine back in the day
Glad you guys finally got the funk (49) out! :)
Do Walk Away from the James Gang, then sample from Walsh's solo career.
Always though it was cool how the guitar is in the right channel and the bass is in the left. This was back when they mixed for "true" stereo.
"Plat me again! Play me again! Play me again!"
@@JohnRJune and on the other side was "Turn me over, turn me over, turn me over"
FYI. You do know this is joe Walsh from the eagles ? I saw them in concert a few times. They were great back in the day. Good job guys !!!
Definitely do "Walk Away" by James Gang! Tons of great songs from Joe Walsh in general from James Gang, self titled and the Eagles!
Cheers....
Excellent, was hoping for closet Queen woman the bomber medley but Funk 49 is a good place to start
The Bomber is my favorite from Rides Again.
Hi again guys. Stop is also a good time, long but worth it
@@Rhythmmanify Mine too. The Bomber I tell ya! Do it!
@@Rhythmmanify Yeah, mine too! First time I ever heard it was on the overnight shift of my favorite FM station...I was studying with headphones on, and when that slide guitar started oscillating between left and right, I just froze and *listened!*
So glad you finally listened to this song!! I think should listen to Rocky Mountain Way next!
Not bad for 1969-70 Trio, Joe Walsh lead guitar vocals, try “Walk Away” Joe had a string of hits and was with the Eagles.
he's the one responsible for making the Eagles rock.
Yes Sir, he gave them the Kick or Sauce that they needed👍
I used to be travel agent for Joe Walsh, the Eagles and more. Circa 1980, Beverly Hills, CA
Beth!!!! How great that you had that connection to joe walsh and the eagles as a travel coordinator. What a super history.
Wow. Cool! The stories you must have
That guitarist has a good future ahead of him if he plays his cards right.
Great, great, great. I was hoping you’d do “Funk 49”. Joe Walsh, one of the best guitar players ever. He even got Jimmy Page to start using a Gibson Les Paul.
I think Joe showed Jimmy how to use a slide,,,,for guitar,,,also.🤔👍
Was Walsh the guy who liked giving guitars to other guitarists? I read that he would do stuff like get on a plane to London to give someone a special guitar.
Lucie Melahn
That’s him.
If I remember correctly he did get it repaired. It was in 1973, 5:15. As usual, recorded backing track with live vocals. Pete got pissed off about something. th-cam.com/video/FlL-FFQZd2I/w-d-xo.html
Lucie Melahn
Well Pete is always on another level, of course. But I didn’t know that was the guitar that Joe Walsh gave him. Wow, he must have regretted that.
Did I mention The Bomber Medley from this very same album. Tho make sure to do the version that contains The Bomber: Closet Queen"/ "Boléro"/ "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" some versions of this album left off Bolero because of rights issues the Ravel family, if I recall correctly.
Yes! Been listening to this song since it was first released. Still a favorite.
“Walk Away” and “Rocky Mountain Way” will blow you away.
“Life’s Been Good” is the definitive and the legendary song by Joe Walsh.
The longer you wait, the more you’re gonna regret not listening sooner. Promise!
Cleveland. Early 70s. James Gang playing all over town. Remember like it was yesterday. Wow....guess I'm really old! Walsh has always been a great guitarist and performer. Lucky to have seen him before he was a rock star. Jimmy Fox drums and Dale Peters bass. Equally awesome in this band!! Thanks for analysis share guys. Peace
Robin Trower: Too Rolling Stoned
Or "Turn to Stone" (the 76 Santa Monica version). The best intro ever done by anyone.
Definitely!!!!
You guys are very cool. It’s great that the younger generation can really appreciate some bad ass music.
Still need Little Feat Spanish Moon from Waiting for Columbus. Lowell George used to play in Frank Zappa's band. This entire album was awesome. btw this is a great choice, too.
I've been pushing for some FEAT for a while. They should do Waiting For Columbus as an entire album!
Love Feat, but Robert Palmer's cover of Spanish Moon improved it.
@@greg901 Have to disagree, but Palmer's Sneaking Sally Through the Alley is amazing. A&A. you guys have to do that!
So now you've played elp trilogy and now the James Gang rides again my two fave rock albums.well done
Great song and must have vinyl. Now on to some Ten Years After
AGREE Alvin Lee either solo or in Ten Years After DESERVEDLY need a reaction even a slight journey to experience.
@@daveking9393 - woke up this morning solo....wow. The live version is not as good but the video is worth watching just for the bass players movement....it’s mesmerizing.
Absolutely like Crickelwood Green Album not the wimpy love to change the word but their ballsy stuff
My ex husband and i blasted this album on our chevy van’s 8 track while driving to LA from seattle summer probably1970’ish! Ok aging myself but oh well brings back such great memories! Thanks
Life's Been Good has some of many favorite lyrics all time.
this whole album is outstanding
Finally! I haven't listened yet but, when I get home I'm going to sit down with a bottle of Jack and give it a listen. Cheers! 😜
These are my two favorites from them, hope you'll enjoy them soon.
