A lot of bands will do a little jam at the beginning of every day of rehearsals, Joe & The James Gang just happens to call those little jam sessions "funks". Somewhere early on, they decided to record them. Someone heard jam, or funk, #49 and said they needed to work it to a song. Need I go on? Also, TONS of good Joe Walsh solo material out there.
Another band you should check out if you want some funk-blues-rock is The J. Geils Band, and a cool jump-off song would be the studio version of "(Ain't Nothin But A) Houseparty". Just be forewarned, you dive in face-first whether you want to or not!

Nobody mentioned them because we had such a cornucopia of music when we were young, we can't remember them all. I've seen Joe several times, mostly with the Eagles, but a couple of times solo. In 1981, he performed at the LA Forum. He had two drummers in his band, each set up on opposite sides of the stage. 1981 was the year of a baseball strike, so to introduce "Funk #49", he said his drummers re-worked the song because of the baseball strike. During the drum solo, the drummers tossed their drumsticks back and forth between them and never missed a beat! Incredible sight. Joe still performs this with the Eagles in concert, as well as other songs from the James Gang and his solo career - like "Life's Been Good", "Walk Away", "Rocky Mountain Way", and occasionally "Turn to Stone", "Average Ordinary Guy" and "Help Me Make It Through The Night".

Joe Walsh is one of the most gifted and original guitarists alive. His guitar sound can shift from sloppy and "chunky" to smooth and melodic in a heartbeat. He's had a very successful career with the James Gang, solo work and his amazing guitar work on songs like "Hotel California" with the Eagles. Joe has also toured with Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band. He's much admired by some of the world's greatest guitarist, including Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Along with his talent, one of his greatest attributes is his sense of humor. You have to check out his song "Life's Been Good". It's a rocker...and it's funny as hell.

Anything Joe Walsh played had that funky southern rock sound. A lot of people wonder why southern people like Rock so much, maybe it has a lot to do with that funky bluesy sound that seems to creep out of a lot of these bands. Satisfies a craving we don’t even realize we have. 😆

There is so much great music from that era!! Not sure how this great band was overlooked, but super glad you found them!!
Joe Walsh has put out SO much great music!
Jealous that you have so much more to experience for the first time!
"Meadows" has been one of my favorites of his. Hope you give it a listen sometime!!!
One band that is way off the radar is Budgie. They influenced groups such as Metallica, who did a cover of one of their tunes: Breadfan. Not bad for '73. Hope someone out there has heard of them or better yet, gives them a first listen!
    Peace

Having grown up in Macon, GA, I was so privileged to have seen so many great 70's bands (including James Gang). Head East was another ("There's Never Been Any Reason"); Boston; Aerosmith; the Allman Brothers; Wet Willie; Atlanta Rhythm Session; Marshall Tucker Band; Parliament Funkadelic; Brothers Johnson ("Strawberry Letter 23"); the Commodores ("Easy," "Brick House..."); Johnny Winter & James Cotton; ...

You need to check out , Elephant's memory - "Mongoose". A great jam. Great story too. The band Elephant's Memory went on to back John Lennon on a couple of his solo projects. This is a song they did shortly before they met up with Lennon. Done about 1970. If you do search for it on TH-cam do not play the video with the blue record label pictured. That one is terrible sound quality and the reverb has been messed with. Actually, there is a newer upload of the song with lyrics if you can find it. Has a green jungle scene pictured. Good sound quality too.

The blonde guy that they showed the most pictures of is Joe Walsh. He sings "Life's Been good to me so far" He's been in some quite prestigious bands...The Eagles since '75...James Gang, The Hollywood Vampires with Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper, Ringo (Beatles) Starr and His all Star Band, and a couple more bands. He played with Jeff Lynne , Tom Petty, Prince, Steve Winwood etc. at George Harrison's tribute. He's a fixture on a lot of great songs. Definitely hear his influence on "Funk #40"

One of my all time favorite musicians. Joe is a monster guitarist. Your take about them ripping off Footloose was fascinating!!! I've never heard that one before but it makes so much sense.

Love me some Joe Walsh whether it's with the Eagles or James Gang or solo !!!! He's quite the character. You might also like his "Rocky Mountain Way" and "Walk Away"

I always loved the bass line on this song, as you said, it was funky, but the bass allowed the guitar and drums to go all over the place and hold the song together. Some of their bigger hits were "Rocky Mountain Way" and "Life's Been Good To Me".

James Gang was the band Joe Walsh was part of before he went solo. They released three albums before Joe exited. Other songs to check out by them include Walk Away, Funk 48, Woman, The Ashes The Rain And I, The Bomber and Collage. Lots of good stuff on those three albums.

This was Joe Walsh before his solo career or the Eagles. Bad ass rock n roll. Joe is SOOO underrated as a guitar player and songwriter.

Sir, that is Joe Walsh, an extraordinary human being and extraordinary musician and guitarist who makes any band sound great! You have got to hear his other stuff!

This is my favorite reaction. Joe Walsh is so underrated.. he is a goat. Not only that, but he sold his 59 les paul to no other than Jimmy Page for song (pun).. that guitar is now synonymous with 2 legends.

One of the guitarists. Tommy Bolin also played on Deep Purple's Come Taste The Band, James Gang are definitely an underrated band as I'm too young to be around back in 1970 I've only discovered them in recent years.

James Gang was my first rock concert, summer of 1969 at the Ohio State Fair. Ten years old walking around wide eyed wishing I was a few years older.
    Suggestions
Frigid Pink their cover version of "House of the Rising Sun".
Rory Gallagher, "Garbage Man Blues", "Bullfrog Blues", any of a couple dozen others.
