It's from the directors of The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and The Princess & the Frog. H to the E to the double hockey stix yes I'm gonna see this.
BB5_MGAN the chicken barely did anything. It wasn't even that funny. It was just a chicken that acted like a chicken. It swallowed the heart a few times, ate, made some noises and was there for the whole journey. It was a chicken
Ikr? All I can say is Jared Bush is lucky he was still around to direct Encanto (considering it was *his* idea to decrease the pig’s role) because if I had been born in the 70s and became an executive at Walt Disney Animation Studios, trust me, he wouldn’t be around to direct Encanto. He’d have been FIRED... after the release of Moana.
Yeah I remember two years ago when they show off the art of the boat and everyone kept pointing out it looked a lot like Wind Waker. I figured it would be great just from the 2013 description and the directors listing. Same with Inside Out, I just knew it would be great from the concept alone.
The story was freaking brilliant. The songs were freaking brilliant. The characters were freaking brilliant. The animation was freaking brilliant. What else can I say but brilliant! I've been a longtime fan of Lin's works. I was super big on In The Heights back in the day, and still am. I'm a super fan of Hamilton, and this work of art was lovely. My praises go to the songwriters in this movie. My favorite movie of the 21st century!
I glad their is no surprise villain again in a Disney film, cause by Zootopia it was getting old. It was fine the first time Frozen did it but by the third time it was getting tedious. Glad it's not here this time.
I'll raise my glass to that! It really worked with Wreck it Ralph and Frozen. And I didn't mind it with Big Hero 6 because it wasn't out of the blue. But with Zootopia it really didn't result in a great villain and I'm still a little fuzzy as to why? It was never a trend I outright hated, but it also somewhat gutted great Disney villains. This one both has a final object that is kind of a villain, but also isn't. Which is unique and I liked that. Not every film needed a villain, Inside Out did just fine without one and so did Moana.
Nicholas Bloom When I say why I'm not referring to hints, I probably should have made that clearer. I sometimes do question what the motivation was. Oh well, its not a dealbreaker by any stretch of the imagination.
Yeah he said it was, still seems a bit out of place, but its a good song. I can understand the David Bowie tribute. Same with the Mad Max tribute, that was awesome and completely unexpected.
You're right about what you said is regards to "execution." Moana is Disney going back to a fairly simplistic story but the way in which it is told to us is what makes it awesome. I also love how it adheres to the musical format a lot better than the studio's recent efforts that tried the same thing. I love Frozen but my major gripe with it is that the musical numbers just kind of disappear by the end of the movie. No reprisals or anything. All of the music in Moana is powerful and memorable. And I heard The Rock himself sing. 10/10 100/100
Yeah, I love Frozen and it doesn't bother me that the songs sort of end for the last 30 minutes, but that is true the musical pacing is a bit weird and the first half is a bit top heavy. Again, I don't mind but I can see what some people certainly would, Moana doesn't have that problem.
Tyler Bioshock R It doesn't ruin the film for me, but it's one of very few things in Frozen I can point my finger at. Hopefully Moana will set the stage for musicals to come.
not you Yeah, it is something you can point at. I mean you have basically four songs in a row, then it starts to slow, and by the end it stops. Kind of odd.
Oh and can I say this? The theater I went to had the most genius marketing choice I have ever seen. Anyone seeing the film on opening day got a free download of How Far I'll Go. That is brilliant. Also that was the fastest soundtrack I have ever bought, even Frozen took me a day or two afterward.
2016 has been a fantastic year of animated films. Not only it has so far the biggest number of animated films released this year, but also 5 of them each got the Animat Seal of Approval. I wonder how the Top 5 Best and Worst list is goin to turn out? Maybe we'll also get the Top 5 Honourable Mentions.
If I'm not wrong, the polynesian culture and the hawaian one are completely different cultures, its just that people made the assumption that because its set in the south pacific,it totally is about hawaian culture. Thats like saying that all asians are chinese.
Trust me, I was the same way, and yet they kept finding interesting ways to show off the animation, from hand drawn backgrounds at a point, the character designs AKA that LAVA MONSTER YEAH! And even a bit that looked somewhat anime like. Really I couldn't praise the animation more.
I was extremely nervous to watch this and put it off for a long time, for whatever reason. I guess I was nervous you wouldn't like it or something? But I'm glad I finally did, cause you just basically read my mind.
JackHammer87: I think Zootopia is a bit overrated, and I think this film is better. I'm not saying Zootopia is bad though, I admit it has a great message and amazing animation, but the story and characters I thought were just good. And I feel that the reason people love Zootopia so much is because it came out at the right time. And as for Moana, I do agree that the first few minutes felt a little cliched, but the rest of the film is so amazing that I don't care. So yeah, go ahead and enjoy either film but I personally think Moana is better.
Jack n Angel Vlogs I have to agree with you there. Maybe it's the more mature/close-to-home writing, but (even though I liked it) there's something about Zootopia that just didn't click with me like it did so many other viewers.
Jack n Angel Vlogs Same here. I wasn't even that interested in seeing Zootopia at first until I heard people all around me irl and on the internet saying they saw it and it's the best thing in the entire world. But with Moana, I was sold right from the very first trailer.
Zootopia is one of my favorite Disney films, but mostly because I've always loved Disney's animal flicks, Bambi has always been one of my favorites and Zootopia definitely follows in that tradition of Disney animal films with important themes and messages embedded in them. That being said, people do oversell it. People criticize Moana for being formulaic but Zootopia was no more original or groundbreaking in its storytelling than any other traditional Disney animated piece. In fact, that's what surprised me about it. With how modest the marketing was I was under the impression Disney was testing new waters or really breaking away from what was expected of then. But its story is pretty standard Disney from beginning to end. A determined and optimistic protagonist with their eye on the prize teams up with someone they don't really see eye to eye with and they go on a journey of self-discovery and bring out the best in each other. That describes pretty much every Disney film since Princess and the Frog, which isn't a problem for a massive Disney fanatic like myself but those who criticize Moana for being formulaic have no reason to claim Zootopia was any less so.
2nd to Last Guesses for his top 5 Worst To Best of 2016 Worst #5 Trolls (5/10) #4 Ratchet and Clank (4/10) #3 The Wild Life (3/10) #2 Ice Age Collision Course (3/10) #1 Norm of the North (2/10) Honorable Mentions *Kung Fu Panda 3 (8/10) *The Angry Birds Movie (6/10) *The Secret Life of Pets (7/10) *The Little Prince (6/10) *Sausage Party (7/10) *Storks (7/10) Best #5 Finding Dory (9/10) #4 Moana (9/10) #3 Kubo and the Two Strings (9/10) #2 Anomalisa (9/10) #1 Zootopia (10/10 There's only one More animated film this year sing let's see how that ends up
But shiny was like my favorite Song man! Like, I actually searched it up on TH-cam after watching it. I've never felt the need to do that for any Disney song ever.
Here's my predictions for The Top Best and Worst Animated Films of 2016. Worst: 7.) Storks 6.) The Angry Birds 5.) Trolls 4.) Ice Age 5 3.) Ratchet and Clank 2.) The Wild Life 1.) Norm of the North HM: The Secret Life Of Pets Best: 7.) Sausage Party 6.) Kung Fu Panda 3 5.) Sing 4.) Finding Dory 3.) Kubo and the Two Strings 2.) Moana 1.) Zootopia
For the movie to make you want to watch more Disney films, Mat, I can honestly say that the only thing I'm worried about is that it has high potential to make too much merchandise! Also, there IS a surprise villain in this movie: The fact that there is no villain! Fine, I'll let Heihei do the humor around the film...
In my opinion, Tamatoa's only flaw was that there wasn't more of him. His personality and song made him interesting enough to want around for longer. Like 2-4 minutes of screen appearance longer.
I would not say it's as good as the likes of Hunchback of Notre Dame or Frozen, but I would say I enjoyed it alot more than Zootopia (which I disliked because of how preachy it was about the moral, and I considered the villain to be THE most pathetic Disney Villain of all time). Moana and Maui (who I thought I would hate) were fine characters, and the songs are good...but I would say they are on the same level as I would put the songs from Beauty and the Beast. 1 or 2 are memorable, and the rest are just...meh. The story is....alright, but it really is not all that great The animation is amazing, some of Disney's best even. However, EVERYTHING in this film is predictable. As in, not even once did I get surprised that something was or wasn't a thing in the film, aside from how I thought I would hate Maui. This film is good, but unlike films like Frozen or Lion King, I would not really call Moana a game changer. It does not subvert any troupes (In fact some parts of the film angered me). It is just a straight up film, that is good, but has nothing all that special about it. It is far above the depths of bad films known as Little Mermaid or Chicken Little, but it does not pierce the heavens the way films like Hunchback of Notre Dame or Frozen do. For Moana, I would give them a B-. Enjoyable and fun, but it's nothing special.
Personally, I found this movie good. Not great, but good. I actually liked the beginning and the end but the middle felt a little slow to me. Also, the premise felt a little clichéd as did Moana's character. I also found Maui a little too egotistical to really become invested in him. I think it would have been better if we saw his past through a flashback. I'm not gonna lie, the humor felt incredibly juvenile at times. Also, the songs didn't do much for me with two exceptions. So, what did I like about the movie? Well, the animation was absolutely amazing! It felt like I was actually in the established world of the South Pacific. Also, the moment near the end of the movie with Moana and her grandmother was beautiful. The legend told at the start of the movie really got me interested in the story. Overall I liked Zootopia better but this was still pretty enjoyable.
Avalasia Love I thought it was an okay movie. I knew everything that was going to happen and it was hard to sit through it cause I wanted it to end. It's just a Disney hero movie. It did that Disney thing where the two main characters fight with each other 2/3 into the movie and both leave each other. What would've made up for that was if Maui never came back. He had no reason to show back up. He left her because he didn't want his hook to break. Then he comes back to help Moana for no explained reason. If he would've never came back and left Moana to do what the ocean told her, I would've liked the movie. She was the one who stopped those coconut monsters, she was able to escape that giant talking crab. She knows how to sail, so she should be capable of restoring the heart on her own. But nope they have to bring Maui back. He doesn't even do anything to help. If only this movie tried to do something new.
the pacing ruined some of it for me, it's been thirty minutes and nothing! had to get that out but still an awesome film with stunning music and animation, just not something I can rewatch like zootopia
Here's the review of Sing ED505: Sing. After entertaining us with the Secret Life of Pets early on in the summer, Illumination Entertainment gives out another film in the same year. They seem to have taken some of the aspects of other films this year, like the setting being in a world of anthropomorphic animals (Zootopia), being a musical (Trolls), and the moral of never giving up on your ambition (Kubo and the Two Strings). Like the rest of the Illumination productions, this one seems to have a few twists and turns that is all the more reason to see it. How,? Well seeing how this is the final animation film this year and since 2017 is not too long away, let's find out. The Story: Now the plot of this film seems to be one of those, "I need to make some money to save what I love," cliches and films such as Happy Gilmore and the live-action Yogi Bear film fit this trope perfectly. However, it takes a creative toll when the ones in the film are all anthropomorphic animals. However, the plot soon forgets all about the currency-quest when it now focuses more on the contestants of Buster's contest following their passions with their individual struggles interfering with that, which soon adds up to the one part of the story that everyone will want to see. Like the Secret life of Pets, the film has subplots that actually make a contribution that is relevant to the central plot itself and with the struggles everyone goes through, we get to see the determination that just makes this movie even more intriguing to watch than before. (I'm omitting the animation part). The Characters: If I'm being honest with myself, a lot of these characters stand out in their own respective ways and each one is just as intriguing as the next. Starting with the central protagonist; Buster Moon is optimist who pushes past his limitations because of his desire to keep the theater his father bought for him up and running and as the movie progresses, he will soon descend into a five stages of grief-like position that makes makes him rediscover his true motivation for show-business. There's Eddie, Buster's friend who is ironically the opisite of Buster, as he's a slacker and a pessimist as he's more willing to just give up and get on with life, but soon comes to be the supporting friend he is inside. As for the contestants of Buster's contest, Rosita who has to deal with her overbearing family and her dance partner Gunther who is a literal glory hog, Johnny is a physical trope of choosing his dream over his family, mother latter of which partake in not so favorable hobbies, Ash gets to know what flying solo feels like when the competition interferes with her relationship with her boyfriend Lance, and Meena is a female gentle giant who's primary flaw is her unwillingness to sing inf don't of an audience. The closest character who is a villain is Mike the moise as he has a tough guy attitude, insults his competition, and is only in the competition for the money and not for his dream. Other characters like Ms. Crawley, Nana Noodleman, Eddie's grandmother, Meena's family, Lance, and Johnny's criminal dad each play a role that believe it or not seems to service the plot in their own unique way.
So all that's left on the 2016 animated film list is Illumination's "Sing". Pixar's 30th Anniversary's almost done. We're getting closer to 2017 already.
Story: you are completely right. Actually, it is full of clichés as well. However, this film is more than strong enough to prove that being full of clichés does NOT necessarily mean it is a bad story. The story right here is still very nicely organized overall and also touching at moments as well. The first parts seem like pretty messy of Disney clichés but they make full good use of them. Animation: This is the best of the best CGI animation I have ever seen from Walt Disney Animation Studios Songs: I feel like it is obvious that you do NOT like how Justin Timberlake did to Trolls. It's really 2 different types of song adaptations. The ones from Trolls stand out much more to be a major hit while also fits into the story while the ones from Moana fits in the story so much that you can follow the story by following their words. I feel sorry for Walt Disney that this will not be the soundtracks that get spun the most by the kids but they are just like the ones from Frozen - couple of them (actually more in Moana) stand out really well while some of them sound ABSOLUTELY garbage by themselves while still makes some sense inside the story Is this better than Zootopia: ABSOLUTELY in my opinion (I don't really get the charms of Zootopia as I feel like it is good but certainly not the one that can touch my heart at all) Well since I don't like Zootopia more than something like Mr. Peabody & Sherman or even Meet the Robinsons, this is going to be my favorite of this year (2014: HTTYD2 2015: The Peanuts Movie)
My Predictions for his list this year Best 8. Sausage Party (22/30) 7. Kung Fu Panda 3 (24/30) 6. Sing (25/30) 5. Finding Dory (26/30) 4. Moana (36/40) 3. Anomailisa (28/30) 2. Kubo and The Two Strings (28/30) 1. Zootopia (30/30) Honorable Mention Storks (21/30) Worst 8. The Secret Life Of Pets (20/30) 7. The Angry Birds Movie (18/30) 6. The Little Prince (18/30) 5. Trolls (15/30) 4. Rachet and Clank (12/30) 3. Ice Age Collision Course (10/30) 2. The Wild Life (10/30) 1. Norm Of The North (5/30)
That's precisely my prediction for the top 5 worst; not sure about best though other than #1 and also don't know if he might expand it beyond a top 5 for each list considering there were so many animated films that he reviewed this year as compared to last year
best to worst films Best 1 zootopia 2 kubo and the seven strings 3 moana 4 finding dory 5 Kung fu panda 3 Honorable mention sausage party storks the secret life of pets angry birds the little prince Worst 5 trolls 4 ratchet and clank 3 ice age 5 2 the wild life 1 norm of the north Unknown sing
I don't really like the way you talked about inner workings, so what if It's more cartoony than usal Disney films? I get that you may prefer a more down to earth animation style seens you hate the Cloudy films so much. Again this is your opinion and again great review but come on man that short Was great! (Again tho i do Love the cartoony feel in a 3D world so It's just My opinion)
I will admit the character design was weird, especially that girl, but I liked it. The constant reminder of death was pretty funny if you ask me. For the record I really liked Lava, which he didn't like.
Tyler Bioshock R Yeah True haha, again tho i really liked the weird character designs not specifficly because of "That ass" but rather for being something new and Fresh imo.
Karl Fransson Yeah, it was unique, but also can be off putting. Again I liked the comedy and the message of not wasting life is certainly something I can get behind.
Karl Fransson Yeah, I can relate to the message quite a bit after this year. I spent an entire year trying to meet the voice of Belle who is an absolute hero to me. I didn't need to really, but I didn't want to look back on my life and go on about what I could have done and the regrets I would have if I didn't do it. So I did, and I am eternally happy I did because it was hands down one of the greatest moments of my life. So yeah, I can heavily relate to the message.
And that's why "Shiny" is considered a BIG LIPPED ALLIGATOR MOMENT!! For anyone who doesn't know what a BLAM is, it means a musical number literally comes out of nowhere and has really no meaning to it at all.
It actually had purpose though. Moana was distracting Tamatoa by having him talk (sing) about himself. Some of the things he says in that song are also the reason why Maui is depressed later on.
Out of place from a style stand point? Yeah, at this point I don't care because I'm starting to really like that song. And the character is foreshadowed for a bit before it happens. It matters to the plot, and it even comes back in the post credit scene. Its not a BLAM but it sure is weird to have a David Bowie type song in a film full of Polynesian music.
I disagree about the first song coming out of nowhere for it was a great way to show off Moana's home and Moana growing up and showing who she was. Without that song would we have been invested into her home and family and friends or know more about Moana?
Eh, in all honesty, I feel like Disney played it WAY too safe with Moana. There's a lot of wasted potential that would make this film from just good to amazing. The main lead is way too perfect and doesn't have any flaws whatsoever, with no sense of depth. Hell, even Maui kinda acknowledges the fact she's just a another princess (Yes I know she's not a actually a princess but you get the iead). Now I'm not saying it's a bad film for using the traditional Disney formula, far from it. I'm just saying it could've been a lot better than what we got.
"Shiny" totally broke my immersion when I saw the movie a few days ago. But seeing how pretty much every cartoon reviewer I follow found it great, maybe I should give it a second watch...
I'm glad that they make a movie about the Polynesians. They are somewhat overlooked by history but they are far greater explorers than Columbus ever was. They traversed the pacific ocean from Polynesia next to Australia all the way to the coast of south America. A distance close to 3 times what columbus ever traveled and with much more primitive technology and far less resources.
I like the movie more than I thought I would, Pocahontas is my favorite disney movie and The Hunchback of Notre Same is my second I would gladly make this my third! :)
Animat, make sure that Animation Lookback Walt Disney Animation Studios + is not only spectacularly amazing to behold, but also uber-spectacularly amazing to behold in the history of Animation Lookback itself for all the right reasons for endless genderations to come and get more than 5 million views, 10 million views, 30 million views, 100 million views or even more than to this very day!!
Here are my worst to best 2016, Fourth Tear: 15. Norm of The North 1/10 14. The Wild Life 2/10 13. Ice Age: Collision Course 3/10 Third Tear: 12. Ratchet and Clank 4/10 11. Storks 4/10 Second Tear: 10. Secret Life of Pets 5/10 9. Kung Fu Panda 3 6/10 8. Sausage Party 6/10 7. Angry Birds Movie 7/10 6. Trolls 7/10 First Tear: 5. Finding Dory 8/10 4. Sing 8/10 3. Moana 9/10 2. Kubo 9/10 1. Zootopia 10/10
Funny how you mentioned "Little Mermaid"... I thought this movie is also a lot like "Little Mermaid 2": specifically about a teenage princess w/ overprotective parents who wants to explore the sea and likewise has cute animal sidekicks and no love interest. Maybe "Little Mermaid 2" helped inspire "Moana" ;) .
Well this this is the fifth seal of approval in a row now! This is amazing! Yes, I know, Anomalisa was released in the US in 2015, but, it was released internationally this year.
I have some worries about this film, because I heard that the plot is pretty slow. I would not be shocked if this ends up winning over Zootopia and Dory, since Disney Princess films are always the most successful nowadays. Disney did their thing this year.
For me that would be so funny if this was 2012 all over again with everyone's jaw dropped down to the ground thinking that either Zootopia or Moana will win, but actually Finding Dory wins sense it's Pixar. But I doubt it because when Brave won over Wreck It Ralph I actually agreed with them I liked Brave better than Wreck It Ralph but i don't think Finding Dory can really compete with Zootopia or Moana and Disney Animation is ruling the world
Chase Gould It would be morbidly funny, but I think the Academy just wants Pixar and don't really think outside the box. I mean Pixar for the last decade was the best choice, but as of the 2010s its not as cut and dry. And the voting system is TERRIBLE on the animation side. You don't even need to see all the options, so don't count it out. Like I said, I liked Dory, but it ain't got nothing on Kubo and the two Disney choices.
Chase Gould I honestly don't see Dory winning this year, and neither Kubo as well. I haven't seen Moana yet, but I wouldnt be shocked if the DP film won.
Jayden Griffiths Yeah Kubo is not going to win. Its funny the Academy acts like they NEED diversity in the animation category, but they never win. That attitude is why we got average films like the Box Trolls instead of the amazing Lego Movie. Its odd, nobody in the animation industry is asking for diversity in nominations. Hell its more patronizing anyway.
Man I saw it on opening night, what an experience. The place was packed at 9 PM with nothing but animation fans in there 20s, barely any kids. They had a blast, same as I. Really I don't know which is better, Moana or Zootopia. I mean Zootopia did have that unique message and was unique in and of itself, but I have always kind of loved the Disney musicals more then the non musicals. And it was a great musical, fastest soundtrack I ever bought. They both are wonderful films, though I might have enjoyed Moana more, really. What a great film, Sing has quite the competition.
This year is turning out to be a mixed bag for animation. We have modern classics like Zootopia, this movie, and even Kubo and the Two Strings. And then we have our share of the worst films like Norm of the North, (should I even acknowledge Ice Age at this point?) The Wild Life, and... Trolls? Serously? Oh, and let's not forget a few certain... controversial movies.
So I think it's safe to say the top 5 best of the year is on lock since there are now a total of 5 seals of approval. As much as I am excited about it I somehow doubt Sing will make the top 5 but maybe as an honorable mention at best
Alright, I'm going to predict that this will be the second best animated film of this year. Zootopia has a 10/10 score, so I know what you're calling it.
That "Shiny" scene reminded me of Ooggie's song from Nightmare Before Christmas. Maybe not the style, but the glowing colors and the personality of the villain. I loved this movie and cannot wait to get it on Blu Ray. :)
my rating: story: 10/10 simple but the simplicity is what makes it work so well animation: 10/10 almost as good as that of Zootropolis/Zootopia characters: 9/10 i love how the ocean is a character but i have one problem being that maui can act very egotistical and selfish during the beginning songs: 10/10 probably the best part of the film, highlights include: We know the way and Shiny overall: 10/10
One thing I give Moana over Zootopia was that it didn't do the surprise villain twist again that Big Hero 6 and Frozen had, not that it ruined Zootopia for me and it was fine when Frozen did it first, but it was somewhat getting tiresome by the third film and twist isn't shocking anymore.
Yeah, not ruined, but a little bit annoying. Hopefully Giant has the classic obvious bad guy. I think Tangled was the last film that straight up did that.
doglover102 I get that. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney film period, and I really do love Sleeping Beauty Little Mermaid Aladdin Mulan, Princess and the Frog and Frozen. So yeah i gotcha.
dog lover I gotcha, it is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker so it'll probably bring in some Disney Reniassance fans. Just for me personally I like Zootopia better so far but I have not seen Moana yet so we'll see. And don't be surprised if Zootopia and Moana get into a big battle at the Oscars!
Personally, I think this is the 3rd best animated feature of 2016 so far. 2nd would be Legend of Kubo, and 1st would be Zootopia. Although, I will say, while Shiny is the least fitting song in the movie, it is personally my favorite. I think it's supposed to be a tribute to David Bowie; it does sound like a parody of one of his songs.
The story gets a 10/10. The animation deserves a 9/10. The characters and the songs deserve a really awesome 9/10. So, the movie gets a big 10 out of 10, and this movie deserves my Seal of Approval.
Tangled: 2010 movie with songs and a princess Frozen: 2013 movie with songs and a princess Moana: 2016 movie with songs and a kind of princess Anyone see a 3 year pattern?
Yeah, it looks like Zootopia is the best animated movie of 2016, while Moana doesn't look as good as Zootopia, don't get me wrong this movie is beautifully animated and it looks unique.
It's from the directors of The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and The Princess & the Frog. H to the E to the double hockey stix yes I'm gonna see this.
Eli Copperman Holy ####, the people who made The Little Mermaid DIDN'T force a god awful love story!?
Marshadow the Magical I guess not.
YOU FORGOT TREASURE PLANET!
Noahaon No, I just didn't mention it.
Eli Copperman
Sorry for overracting
I really wanted the adorable pig to have more screen time. Swap the chicken and pig roles and we'll get somewhere.
Idk, I think some really clever jokes came from that chicken.
BB5_MGAN the chicken barely did anything. It wasn't even that funny. It was just a chicken that acted like a chicken. It swallowed the heart a few times, ate, made some noises and was there for the whole journey. It was a chicken
Psycho Magalor the chicken didn't do shit
That chicken was absolute crap, I expected it to do something else, that the movie was building up to something. Nope. That chicken was useless.
Ikr? All I can say is Jared Bush is lucky he was still around to direct Encanto (considering it was *his* idea to decrease the pig’s role) because if I had been born in the 70s and became an executive at Walt Disney Animation Studios, trust me, he wouldn’t be around to direct Encanto. He’d have been FIRED... after the release of Moana.
tbh "You're welcome" is the next "Let it Go"
Pepe Trump you sure?
CJAdams97 yes I'm sure
Pepe Trump naw, How Far I'll Go is
I fucking L❤VED THIS MOVIE, especially the great musical numbers
Pepe Trump And that dude who voice Nigel in Rio voicing the crab monster is spot on!
I knew this film was gonna be great the second I saw the promo art
Yeah I remember two years ago when they show off the art of the boat and everyone kept pointing out it looked a lot like Wind Waker. I figured it would be great just from the 2013 description and the directors listing. Same with Inside Out, I just knew it would be great from the concept alone.

The same guys who directed The little mermaid and Aladdin directed this?
MUST SEE IT!!!
I glad their is no surprise villain again in a Disney film, cause by Zootopia it was getting old. It was fine the first time Frozen did it but by the third time it was getting tedious. Glad it's not here this time.

Rob Bob
Also true, same with Nemo. Nobody is straight up evil, there are obstacles but not an overarching villain.
actually if you watch zootopia carefully you can pick up the clues as to who the villain is
Nicholas Bloom
When I say why I'm not referring to hints, I probably should have made that clearer. I sometimes do question what the motivation was. Oh well, its not a dealbreaker by any stretch of the imagination.
In case your wondering why it seems so out of place, Lin-Manuel Miranda supposedly said that 'Shiny' was meant to pay tribute to David Bowie.
Yeah he said it was, still seems a bit out of place, but its a good song. I can understand the David Bowie tribute. Same with the Mad Max tribute, that was awesome and completely unexpected.
I got back seeing this movie with my mom and this is up with Zootopia for the Best Films by Disney of this year.
And Also this movie is better than frozen (no hate)
Hopefully Moana will set the stage for musicals to come.
not you
Yeah, it is something you can point at.
Tyler Bioshock R Me too! Bought it as soon as I got home from seeing the movie.
Animat doesn't like shiny? TRIGGERED!!! That's my favorite song in the movie!
Schaffrilas productions wants to know his location
That's everyone opinion of disney songs
Mine is You’re Welcome !!!
Sketch Bud l agreed! much better than 2013.
My favorite bits of animation are baby Moana (she is too cute to handle!) and the last verse of You're Welcome (it's so amazingly surreal).
I'm gonna say it: 'How Far I'll Go' is better than 'Let It Go (and I love 'Let It Go').
Wow. First Pokémon Sun and Moon, now this. Media seems to love Hawaii for some reason.
If I'm not wrong, the polynesian culture and the hawaian one are completely different cultures, its just that people made the assumption that because its set in the south pacific,it totally is about hawaian culture.
Thats like saying that all asians are chinese.
Sebastian Gonzalez Hawaiians are Polynesian. Most Hawaiians are both Polynesian and Portuguese.
kat_lover368 ya mean Spanish ?
Only one more movie to go:
SING.
Drew C yep.
Molly Kemp *slow clap*
I literally just got back from seeing this.
And while I think Zootopia is far better, this is my second favorite Disney movie.
I went to see Moana the day it came out, it was absolutely incredible. For me, it truly is the perfect movie.
I keep staring at the water
it looks freaking AMAZING
Trust me, I was the same way, and yet they kept finding interesting ways to show off the animation, from hand drawn backgrounds at a point, the character designs AKA that LAVA MONSTER YEAH! And even a bit that looked somewhat anime like. Really I couldn't praise the animation more.
Guacamole
I know. You bet your ass I got up and clapped at the end for, well a lot of reasons. Best CG animation I have ever seen one of them.
Am I the only one that that wants to drink the water XD
Thank you Walt Disney Animation Studios for being great again.
I was extremely nervous to watch this and put it off for a long time, for whatever reason. I guess I was nervous you wouldn't like it or something? But I'm glad I finally did, cause you just basically read my mind.
"Lin-Manuel Miranda"
*SCREAMS*
I just saw the movie and it was adventurously beautiful.
Funny I just got a commercial for this movie trying to watch a review of i
JackHammer87: I think Zootopia is a bit overrated, and I think this film is better.
J Crews JackHammer87: Another reason I don't like Zootopia as much as others is because I had more hype for Moana than Zootopia. Lol
Hugh Mungus JackHammer87: True, but it's the execution that makes many of the Disney films so good.
I can't believe it's the 30th Anniversary of The Great Mouse Detective.
So underrated. Ratigan is best villain.
BB5_MGAN I know right, Ratigan puts most Disney villains to shame.
+Harry Thomas Pictures My favourite hand drawn Disney film in fact, I love it
DeanoReviews Yeah it's one of my favourite's too.

With that many films he should just do a Top 5 Worst and a Top 10 Best!
Sean S What's the last one?
PENNY POLENDINA Sing by illumination
Sean S Oh yeah (btw I'm probably the only one looking forward to it)
Top 7 Best and Worst + 1 Honorable Mention (Anomolisa came out last year)
But shiny was like my favorite Song man!
Tamatoa is the second coming and Shiny is the best piece of soundtrack ever created for a film. Fight me.
For the movie to make you want to watch more Disney films, Mat, I can honestly say that the only thing I'm worried about is that it has high potential to make too much merchandise! Also, there IS a surprise villain in this movie: The fact that there is no villain!
Fine, I'll let Heihei do the humor around the film...
saw this movie In ponyville's theater and it was amazing!
Ricky Smith's Free Candy Van it is I'm just in a different realm
Also, I liked that the movie didn't have a concrete antagonist.
I give moana 8 out of ten zootopia was a film that really affected me like no other film I had seen before so 10 out of 10 for that one
I just saw this today with my sister and her friends and we all absolutely loved it! :D So I came to this video to see if you felt the same way
Nessa G. well he did.
Kendryck Lazala And I'm very happy about it :)
Here's the review of Sing
ED505: Sing.
Crawley, Nana Noodleman, Eddie's grandmother, Meena's family, Lance, and Johnny's criminal dad each play a role that believe it or not seems to service the plot in their own unique way.
cant wait to see this on sunday when my cinema realises a screenning 3 days early since it france it comes out on my birthday
just came back and i loved it the music was the best part for me
I find it fine as a Disney movie.
Also I think I might like it as much as the Jungle Book. That's my thoughts.
So all that's left on the 2016 animated film list is Illumination's "Sing".
Pixar's 30th Anniversary's almost done. We're getting closer to 2017 already.
this movie made me want to watch more disney movies
Moana seems like a combination of Elsa and Judy in character and archetype.
Animation: This is the best of the best CGI animation I have ever seen from Walt Disney Animation Studios
Songs: I feel like it is obvious that you do NOT like how Justin Timberlake did to Trolls. It's really 2 different types of song adaptations. The ones from Trolls stand out much more to be a major hit while also fits into the story while the ones from Moana fits in the story so much that you can follow the story by following their words. I feel sorry for Walt Disney that this will not be the soundtracks that get spun the most by the kids but they are just like the ones from Frozen - couple of them (actually more in Moana) stand out really well while some of them sound ABSOLUTELY garbage by themselves while still makes some sense inside the story
Is this better than Zootopia: ABSOLUTELY in my opinion (I don't really get the charms of Zootopia as I feel like it is good but certainly not the one that can touch my heart at all)
Well since I don't like Zootopia more than something like Mr. Peabody & Sherman or even Meet the Robinsons, this is going to be my favorite of this year (2014: HTTYD2 2015: The Peanuts Movie)
My Predictions for his list this year

Anomalisa is in Animat's 2015 Reviews playlist.
That's precisely my prediction for the top 5 worst; not sure about best though other than #1 and also don't know if he might expand it beyond a top 5 for each list considering there were so many animated films that he reviewed this year as compared to last year

Karl Fransson
Yeah, it was unique, but also can be off putting. Again I liked the comedy and the message of not wasting life is certainly something I can get behind.
Tyler Bioshock R Yeah True, the message is really where the short (like most of Disney's films) really shines
Karl Fransson
Yeah, I can relate to the message quite a bit after this year.
I am going to see it in a couple of hours. Hopefully, it won't be a muck in paradise.
Can't wait to see Moana!:)
We should have Frozen Vs Moana Videos in the future because I'm making one when I get the DVD of Moana
Lonely Fanboy48 Moana is way better.
after hearing the songs a thousand times, i never want to here them again.
Finding Dory was still the best Disney movie this year.
FandomTrash Everfree Or the best Pixar sequel since toy story 2&3
Mr.Feather130 Second best Pixar sequel imo.
After Toy Story 2.
Can't WAIT for Toy Story 4, and I'm also pretty hyped for Incredibles 2
Inner Workings was excellent :O Loved the style and the story!!
It is frustrations to wait until February when this comes out in Finland.
I loved inner workings
Also Moana was great
And now we wait for Sing.~
xSonicSeedrian yep.
MegaSoulhero Oh yeah...I nearly forgot 😅 But the song somewhat felt out of place like...the melody did
Out of place from a style stand point?
Guys has anyone seen the Cars 3 teaser trailer? Just wondering.
Riyad's RANTS and Reviews. Yes and it is AWESOME!!!!
Chase Gould it shocked the shit itself
Chase Gould It's quite dark.
Disney will probably thrive again in 2017.
Jayden Griffiths Probs.
It's a tough call for me. The more I sit on Zootopia, the more issues I find, and Moana left a VERY strong first impression.
He shouldn't remake it, but rather update it with a new video every few years or so.
that and the other lookbacks
He said he would one day.
Here are my worst to best 2016,
Fourth Tear:
15. Norm of The North 1/10
14. The Wild Life 2/10
13. Ice Age: Collision Course 3/10
Third Tear:
12. Ratchet and Clank 4/10
11. Storks 4/10
Second Tear:
10. Secret Life of Pets 5/10
9. Kung Fu Panda 3 6/10
8. Sausage Party 6/10
7. Angry Birds Movie 7/10
6. Trolls 7/10
First Tear:
5. Finding Dory 8/10
4. Sing 8/10
3. Moana 9/10
2. Kubo 9/10
Rating
Story 9/10
Animation 10/10
Characters 9/10
Songs 9/10
Overall 9/10
Just saw this film last night. I absolutely loved it! This film definitely deserves the AniMat Seal of Approval.
Well this this is the fifth seal of approval in a row now! This is amazing! Yes, I know, Anomalisa was released in the US in 2015, but, it was released internationally this year.
I actually saw a trailer for the new Beauty and the Beast trailer as well as the Lego Batman movie trailer. I hope you do review these two.
Looks like I'll be seeing this as soon as I can.
I have some worries about this film, because I heard that the plot is pretty slow.
I would not be shocked if this ends up winning over Zootopia and Dory, since Disney Princess films are always the most successful nowadays.
Disney did their thing this year.
I'm more worried about Dory winning just because its Pixar.
For me that would be so funny if this was 2012 all over again with everyone's jaw dropped down to the ground thinking that either Zootopia or Moana will win, but actually Finding Dory wins sense it's Pixar. But I doubt it because when Brave won over Wreck It Ralph I actually agreed with them I liked Brave better than Wreck It Ralph but i don't think Finding Dory can really compete with Zootopia or Moana and Disney Animation is ruling the world
Chase Gould
It would be morbidly funny, but I think the Academy just wants Pixar and don't really think outside the box.
Jayden Griffiths
Yeah Kubo is not going to win.
The fact that the ENTIRE PACIFIC OCEAN is a character, MAN, Disney knocked it out of the park!
Please pray that the second Disney Renaissance 2never ends.
I'm going to be honest...How Far I'll Go is the only song that really grabbed me.
Maybe you should do a top ten Disney animated shorts
the short clip of music you played of "Shiny" reminds me a little of Earthbound/Mother 2...
I want to see Moana in theater. I'm going try to see it this weekend.
Remember during the oscars when Moana's voice actress sang the song from the movie, and the wave dancer hit her in the head? I do.
You're Welcome is stuck in my head.
Man disney has been on fire since frozen came out. And i like how the water is like the magic carpet
Alright, I'm going to predict that this will be the second best animated film of this year. Zootopia has a 10/10 score, so I know what you're calling it.
honestly
if I would pick moana or zootopia ill pick moana
That "Shiny" scene reminded me of Ooggie's song from Nightmare Before Christmas. Maybe not the style, but the glowing colors and the personality of the villain. I loved this movie and cannot wait to get it on Blu Ray. :)
Glad he did this video. Can't wait to see this movie myself.
my rating:
story: 10/10
simple but the simplicity is what makes it work so well
animation: 10/10
almost as good as that of Zootropolis/Zootopia
characters: 9/10
i love how the ocean is a character but i have one problem being that maui can act very egotistical and selfish during the beginning
songs: 10/10
probably the best part of the film, highlights include: We know the way and Shiny
overall: 10/10
Great review! Saw it in theaters today, I thought it was really good! But I do agree that Zootopia is better. :)
Moana vs Zootopia who will win ?
One thing I give Moana over Zootopia was that it didn't do the surprise villain twist again that Big Hero 6 and Frozen had, not that it ruined Zootopia for me and it was fine when Frozen did it first, but it was somewhat getting tiresome by the third film and twist isn't shocking anymore.
Yeah, not ruined, but a little bit annoying. Hopefully Giant has the classic obvious bad guy. I think Tangled was the last film that straight up did that.
Chase Gould I liked Moana more than Zootopia. That's probably because I have a huge soft spot for Disney Princess movies
doglover102
I get that.
That was such a happy cry of a watch. 😭☺️
i like the look of this film nice review thanks
Tangled: 2010 movie with songs and a princess
Frozen: 2013 movie with songs and a princess
Moana: 2016 movie with songs and a kind of princess
Anyone see a 3 year pattern?
Yeah, it looks like Zootopia is the best animated movie of 2016, while Moana doesn't look as good as Zootopia, don't get me wrong this movie is beautifully animated and it looks unique.
"The Shiny song is the weakest song in the film" WHAT!???!?! Shiny was the best song In this film!
